Complex Story, Poor Translation, And Loads Of Fun, Oh My!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 0

This game is possible one of the most fun RPGs I've ever played. It's battle system is second to none, and the incredibly annoying task of building levels is reduced to a pleasant chore. The storyline is immmensly complex (I still don't have a clue what happened), which can shy away the younger and the dumber.

One of it's few flaws is the shoddy translation job. Most of it is adequete, but there are parts that make an already complicated story impossible to figure out.

Character development wasn't the focus, and it didn't need to be. The only person that became well developed was Ramza, the main character. However, Tactics did not ignore it's other colorful characters, including the ever useless Malak and Rafa and the insanely powerful T.G. Cid.

This game is hard. Very hard. If you don't think, you die very fast and very painfully. In the beginning, you WILL die a lot. If you save in the wrong spot, you might have to restart. But eventually as your characters learn more, get better equipment, and add new and more flexable characters to your army, it becomes much less of a hassle. TG Cid alone makes the last boss a joke. But, you can choose not to use or recruit the slew of available cast members, including the powerful Cid, the super-weak twins Malak and Rafa, the noble Agrias, the young engineer Mustadio, a dazed and confused Cloud, a robot who doesn't have a clue and even chocobos and other beasts. You meet them in your travels, they are there for the taking. You can eventually remove all of those "generic" soldiers who mean nothing to the story.

The job system is VERY innovative. Based on the one used in Final Fantasy V, you can train your soldiers in many different classes, such as knight, chemist, archer, lancer, samurai, mime, just to name a few. And the skill system allows you to pair a previously learned skill from a job not being used. Ever wanted a monk who can summon beasts, or a ninja who can control time magic?

There were planty of good secrets. A secret dungeon, special characters, Zodiac stones, rare weapons, and a cameo appearance by Cloud and Aeris (from FFVII) make the thirty to seventy hours of gameplay well worth it.

The music is some spots was boring, but in battles it was beyond spectacular. Most of the non combat music was put in the appropriate context, adding great ambiance.

This game is definately worth the money you'll pay for it!

One of the best!

This is one of the greatest games ever made! Storyline, music, gameplay, is on top and so mush to do and so incredible fun. Characters from Final fantasy saga and a hole new way to play strategy, makes this game one of the greatest. Buy this and get stuck for days, squaresoft does it again!

Amazing... this game has been out of print for how long, and yet you still hear rave reviews for it ^_^. Well, count me in to, this is one of Square's all time BEST! If you find it, get it... period. Typical "Tactics" game play, but with the Final Fantasy twist. A slew custom options and jobs... you can't play this game the same way twice! Never boring, though you will want to set aside a good chunk of time for game play, becasue like with all FF games, leveling up in mandatory, and gameplay/story is VERY adictive. MY ONLY complaint: This game DOES NOT work on the PS2. It stalls right during the first battle. If you have your PS1 system still however, this game is a rare gem. Honestly, as well recieved as this game has been, it's a shame Square doesn't look at updating and re-releasing a PS2 compatible version (there was a Collectors edition released in Japan 1999/2000... but yet to come to the states *whimper*).

Now i man sound a bit over zealous here. But this game is a masterpiece of epic proportions. Never have I spent more time playing a game, and i know hundreds of others who played it just as long. And the best part, its still just as fun now as at the start.

However, the important part of really understanding this game is getting through the begginging. Many people play a game for 5 minutes and get bored cause they, frankly, are idiots with no patience. If you can simply give this game 10-30 minutes of your time and really try to understand the interworkings of the brillant battle system and the plot to the game, you will likely be just as hooked as i was.

I am sure there are thousands of people kissing squares diamond boot for re-releasing this brillant game. And you know what, you should be.

If you want a game that you may end up putting 1000+ hours in and have fun the whole time while thinking (key, if you don't like thinking, don't even try it), this is the perfect game for you.

Now i return to FFT, and in a few years i may emmerge back once again, with all lv 99 chars leveled up and down to max speed hp and attack power, if you have played the game you know what i am talking about.

Great

It's definetly a getter. Luckily for you (and me) it's comingout again on ... as a Greatest hits...in other words... ... for a new version and not 80 for an old, scratched up, possibly non-working one. And it works for PS2, whereas Tactics Ogre (the previous game by the same team, only published by Atlus and not Square...I think) doesn't. So go get it..in ... days and counting.

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of those games that seems like a throwback when you compare it to FF7 and even FF8. The characters aren't polygons - they're sprites. There are no pre-rendered backgrounds, but tiled 3-D Isometric battlefields. And there is no dungeon exploring - just strategic battles you continually have to survive to get to the next part of the game. Does this sound good? Keep reading...

Imagine the closest thing to going head-to-head with a friend with your party against his/hers. Your enemies have the same strengths and weaknesses your characters have. You can exploit their weaknesses while they will try to exploit your weaknesses. Got a summoner in your party? Watch those knights coming in - they'll get in their two sword blows and your summoner will be dead before he even gets to move. Wouldn't you do the same if the enemy party had a summoner? This is a sample of what it may seem like when you are playing this game. It is a challenge. The game is focused on battles and character management. Yeah, and you can customize your characters so much in this game. You learn abilities for each character, make them a certain class, equip their abilities and items, etc. The possibilities in the characters you can create are endless. It is so technically deep.

The story is typical FF-caliber. Except Square ventured into an area rarely ventured into except by Atlus. Corruption of the church and nobility is the primary theme. It may seem like one person's intention to run amok on the country, but is he being manipulated by higher forces, for example. There are so many names and events in this game that the game has a "Brave Story" function that lists people you've met or heard about, including an option to replay the different scenes you have encountered. So if you drop the game and pick it up 4 months later you can browse through the Brave Story to catch up. But the story is flat out great, very original, and extremely innovative.

This game gets hard very quickly. A typical battle can last up to an hour - imagine that. It would take you an hour to survive and kill about 5 enemy party members. And as I said, the game gets hard. Even some of the early battles are hard. Every time you play this game - no matter how well you know this game - it's hard. But at the same time it is a blast to play through each and every time.

Thanks to Sony for adding this game to the greatest hits and re-releasing it. I was fortunate to grab it when it came out. That's the trend from Squaresoft - get the games when they come out because after that you won't be able to find it anywhere. So get this game the instant you see it available and you can just kiss your family good bye for about a month because you'll want to lock yourself in your room playing this game.

This is probably the most underrated game ever. Most places said it was good, but not great. I don't know about anyone else, but I do know that this is by far my favorite game for Playstation. The graphics are pretty much the best that the Playstation will ever get too. Most of the newer games like Final Fantasy IX would seem like the graphics are better, but they are just so ambitious that it just looks like crap. Tactics has crisp sprites on nice looking polygon setting, and some of the most amazing effects I've seen on any system. The battle system is very confusing at first, but after a few battles, it is like second nature. And let me tell you, this game is addictive. More than once have i been holed up in my room for days at a time playing this game non-stop. In conclusion, this is a fine game and I would recommend it to anyone without a short attention span.

Final Fantasy Tactics is being re-released by squaresoft.

I've seen people all over the internet sell this game for these outrageous prices. This game is going to re-released by Squaresoft soon. It is a very good game. One of top 2 in the Final Fantasy series. Good story line, lots of side quest, and puzzles. You have the ability to change job classes and become different characters. So be patient and you might save some money. But if you want to pay a high price for this because you are impatient, go ahead. The game is well worth it.
