WARNING * If you are buying this game because you are obsessed with Final Fantasy and the original FF style, listen to this. The game is turn based on a gridlike arena, and the entire game is based on the complex battle system, if you don't like long battles or actually having to think, don't buy this and complain. * WARNING

Ok, now that that is over, this game is a must have for anyone with a playstation or a playstation 2. The graphics are not all 3D but not at all dissapointing, with detailed sprites that are always in motion the game has a nice feel to it. The sound effects are also a plus, as well as different battle music for almost every battle. The storyline is great but no where near as in-depth as something like FF7 or FF9. I had beaten the game a while ago and decided i would revisit it recently (great replay value). This time i had a Gameshark that i got for $4, and wondered how much i could do with it. With the option of changing all of my characters to any monster, enemy, boss, ally in the game with any set of moves, the game has just doubled its replay value. If you read some more of the reviews for FFT and decide you want to get this game(which you will) don't forget a Gameshark. However, on an end note, the game is still excellent without cheating, buy it!

I used to be a huge Shining Force gamer way back in the day of the Sega Genesis and I was very sad the day mine died. With the console went one of the best 2 games available for the Genesis, Shining Force 1 and 2. FFT takes the place of my favorites by far exceeding them in gameplay, graphics and story. A departure from traditional Final Fantasy gameplay, FFT forces you to use your tactical skills to effectively beat your foes. It is easy to pick up and you do not need to be a tactical mastermind to be effective in the game. It is nice in that the game can be as easy or as challenging as you want it to be. One of the drawbacks of the game is that you cannot explore the way you can in other games. You follow a linear map and you cannot enter the towns and interact with anyone, unless it is a planned event in the game. This game is well worth the money though. You could possibly spend an obscene amount of hours playing this game if you plan on maxing out the character classes. It's nice in that it is not necessary to do so to beat the game. A must buy for anyone who likes RPG's

Amazing... this game has been out of print for how long, and yet you still hear rave reviews for it ^_^. Well, count me in to, this is one of Square's all time BEST! If you find it, get it... period. Typical "Tactics" game play, but with the Final Fantasy twist. A slew custom options and jobs... you can't play this game the same way twice! Never boring, though you will want to set aside a good chunk of time for game play, becasue like with all FF games, leveling up in mandatory, and gameplay/story is VERY adictive. MY ONLY complaint: This game DOES NOT work on the PS2. It stalls right during the first battle. If you have your PS1 system still however, this game is a rare gem. Honestly, as well recieved as this game has been, it's a shame Square doesn't look at updating and re-releasing a PS2 compatible version (there was a Collectors edition released in Japan 1999/2000... but yet to come to the states *whimper*).

Another FF classic

This is not your average Final Fantasy game, but still an enjoyable one. This is more of a strategy game than an RPG. It is a four-chapter game. The first chapter is learning the basics, the second and third chapters are a little bit harder, and the last chapter is medium and then gets extremely easy once you get Orlandu. There are many differents monster and/or human enemies you must deal with in battles. If you lose a major battle, this means that you must train your men a bit before re-entering. I have beaten this several times and guarantee that you, the viewer/customer, will enjoy it also.

This is probably the most underrated game ever. Most places said it was good, but not great. I don't know about anyone else, but I do know that this is by far my favorite game for Playstation. The graphics are pretty much the best that the Playstation will ever get too. Most of the newer games like Final Fantasy IX would seem like the graphics are better, but they are just so ambitious that it just looks like crap. Tactics has crisp sprites on nice looking polygon setting, and some of the most amazing effects I've seen on any system. The battle system is very confusing at first, but after a few battles, it is like second nature. And let me tell you, this game is addictive. More than once have i been holed up in my room for days at a time playing this game non-stop. In conclusion, this is a fine game and I would recommend it to anyone without a short attention span.

Final Fantasy Tactics is being re-released by squaresoft.

I've seen people all over the internet sell this game for these outrageous prices. This game is going to re-released by Squaresoft soon. It is a very good game. One of top 2 in the Final Fantasy series. Good story line, lots of side quest, and puzzles. You have the ability to change job classes and become different characters. So be patient and you might save some money. But if you want to pay a high price for this because you are impatient, go ahead. The game is well worth it.

This game is excellent. The gameplay is one of the best i have ever seen. Instead of the old "Hack and Slash" method used in the previous FF's, FFT was different. You're able to move your characters all around the battle field. You can attack them from behind to prevent blocks and you can use special abilities you learn by gaining "Job points". The Job System is similar to that of FF5/2, you can change character's job from say "Squire" to "Knight" "Monk" "white mage" etcetera as they gain levels. The battles are sometimes repetitive but are alot of fun, you have to be strategized here, know who to attack, know what attacks to use, know where to move etcetera.
The graphics are 2D with 3dimensional effects and backgrounds. Pretty okay. The story is full of twists and turns and betrayal. You play as Ramza, a young warrior with an uncertain future where you're a member of the Hokuten. You'll receive missions such as eliminating the thieves and saving your best friend's sister and so on.
Overall, a very good game worth your money.

The standard, and for good reason

Read the reviews for other PSX tactics games. Heck, read the reviews for brand new tactics/strategy RPGs coming out. What does everyone compare tactics games to?

FFT.

Final Fantasy Tactics is the standard. Good games came before it, good games have come since it, but FFT is the absolute pinnacle of tactical roleplaying. To express this, I am going to focus only on ONE aspect of FFT (because describing all the excelling aspects of this game would take a very long time)

Innovative class system - there are multiple job classes, and any of the characters in your party can be any of the job classes available in the game. Each of these job classes has active skills and inactive skills, and a character can equip another job class's active skills as a secondary job class. In other words, any of your characters can specialize in a job, and still have active proficiency in another job.

squire, chemist, knight, thief, archer, geomancer, lancer, samurai, ninja, white mage, black mage, time mage, summoner... those are some that come to mind. But there are more possibilities.

As you battle you accrue both experience points which go towards the level of your character (raising your base stats) and job points (JP) which allow you to purchase new abilities within your character class. In other words, you learn abilities how you want to, along a self-designed learning tree. The amount that you can customize is staggering.

How about a comparison

The average RPG - ah, I leveled up my mage! He has learned the spell "fireball!"

FFT - ah, my mage has enough JP for me to buy the fire spell I've been waiting for! Or I could learn a different spell if I want to... or I could change him to a Time Mage. Okay, I'll learn the "fire" spell and then change him to a Time Mage and learn "Haste," then set "Black Magic" as his secondary skill and cast both Time Magic and Black Magic!

The difference? The average RPG moves unique characters along a set "track," in which they accrue more spells and abilities that are just more powerful versions of spells and abilities they had at the beginning of the game. In FFT you design your own track. Want to save up for the most powerful spell towards the beginning of the game? Sure, but it'll cost a lot of job points and a lot of mana. Want to learn "ice" instead of "fire?" Turn your knight into an archer and your chemist into a priest? Why not? It's Final Fantasy Tactics!

This isn't just roleplaying where you play the role. This is roleplaying where you design the role. Endless customization, limitless tactical and stylistic appraoches and choices, hundreds of combinations of different types of characters on the field at once, and the way the team works together depends on YOUR forethought, preparation, and personal taste. My main character's a ninja. What's yours gonna be?

All this and you haven't even equipped your characters with weapons, armour, and accessories yet. Let alone gone into battle. Well, happy hunting.

O.k. the thing is that I have heard A LOT of reviews about how [bad] this game is. I couldn't agree less. Maybe people dont realize what this game has to offer. The first time i played this game i didnt know what the heck I was doing, but after fifteen minutes I was literally hooked. When I had to return it (because i rented it.)I was so mad I made my parents buy me this game the day I gave it back to blockbuster. It is SO fun. Knights, summoners, lancers, and geomancers are some of my favorites. You can also ride chocobos that you bring into battle with you. You can use so many types of magic white magic, black magic, and time magic are all at your disposal. There are twenty jobs to choose from. It is worth the price especialy since it's only ten dollars. Maybe you dont like this game but i have beaten almost every game i have. I'm only on the third chapter. Im positive i'll play this game for many years to come.

Tactics at it's best...

Final Fantasy Tactics - Circa 1997

GOOD:
- complex story with lots of twists and turns
- Hundreds of different abilities and magic powers to learn
- Hundreds of different items and weapons to find
- Lots of playable characters to unlock as well as secrets to uncover

BAD:
- Graphics may seem pretty dated, to today video gamers
- Story can be confusing to some
- Can be too tough or slow for some video gamers

IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- Turn based strategy RPG
- No voice-overs, so there is lots of reading
- Battles can be long and pretty slow moving

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Tactics: Ogre
- Vandal Hearts
- Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Cloud from Final Fantasy VII is a secrets and playable character
- The director who was behind this game (Yasumi Matsuno) also worked on Vagrant Story and was working on Final Fantasy XII (but got pull off the project)
- Note: all Final Fantasy are not related to one another, think of each Final Fantasy a it's own game not connect in any real/true way to another Final Fantasy, the only exception is Final Fantasy X-2 which is a sequel to Final Fantasy X
