Wow
I've had this game for the longest time, but I still enjoy it. I know a lot of the newer games are really expensive, and if you don't have a lot of cash to purchase them, give this one a try. It can provide you with hours, I mean HOURS of a unique gaming experience. It's a highly customizable, turn based strategy game with an engaging storyline. It is very easy to learn how to play, and it will last. Definately try this game or play it if you are given a chance. I highly recommend it. It is one of my personal favorites.
This is one of THE best strategy games for it's time.

When I first got Final Fantasy Tactics, I got it along with Final Fantasy VII. I played VII, more than Tactics. But I got tired of VII and went to Tactics. I got completely hooked on it, the story and graphics were amazing. Given the fact that PS2 was of no knowledge, you'd flip out over games that have sort of CG graphics when you attack or cast spells or even heal.
FFT is a VERY good game to get hooked on. Cause even after you beat the game, you can do so much more, you can build your characters up. You can do quests, find 'easter eggs' from other FF game when you go treasure hunting.
For FFT Advanced, that's a good game, but it's not the best, sure it's good for Gameboy, but it doesn't compare to it's predocessor, I mean, it's a great game on the road, that's if you don't have a PS1 with a mini TV and stuff. I beat FFTA WAY too fast haha.
All in all, if your a super hardcore gamer who will want to go back in time and play old school games, GO FOR IT! A DEFINATE MUST! I hope this helps you decide as of the other posts about this game, quite frankly, I'm still playing the game when I get really bored haha :)
The greatest game ever released, on any system, bar none

1. Whoever put this game sucked has no taste in video games and im betting thought the story was too confusing cuz he/she lacks intelligence.
Now that we got that over with.....
I have a few things to say
1. This is the greatest game of all time.
2. This game has the best storyline of all time
3. I would be perfectly happy if a job system extremely similar to this game's one was put into every RPG.
4. This game's difficulty is exactly where any games should be.(challenging but not impossible)
----------------------------------------
*To explain*
This game's story line has so many turns and twists as you start as a young knight with a clear side of good and evil and right and wrong. And then your world is thrown apart as good is no longer so clear, and everyone is out for their own good. The religous figure everyone admired turns out to be fake, the chuch is evil, and even the main war taking place isnt all to the storyline. This game's storyline was so amazing when i finished i just sat back and said, "Wo,". There are no more words that can describe this story than amazing.
The gameplay is pure genious. Thats all that needs to be said.
In short if u have the chance to play or own this game, do so.
4th copy still playing strong

thats right you read that correctly 4 copies worn through 2 gave 1 away and wearing down number 4. To be honest I was quite hesitant on even renting this game when it came out thinking that square was using the success of VII (ff VII) to rack in the sales of this less than average game. Well I was wrong (not the first time either) so far I've played through the game 7 times and it becomes more involving each time as I try to create a different team (even ramza takes on different roles, this time I didn't even give him the chance to finish his base class and went right into mage). The game is hard thats a no brainer and if you are a no brainer then don't pick up this game cause I don't know where copy 5 is comming from and I'd just assume not have to guess. There will be frustration, there will be hardships, you will get mad at it and wonder how on Gods green earth did square manage to make such crap. Then you can pick up the controller again and give that battle on riovanes castle roof top another try to keep Rafa alive (Very Hard 4/5 or 7/5 depends on what you want to achieve). Not going to lie to you if you don't plan ahead then you will be dead before the battle has even started. I wouldn't even try to compare this to the other games in the series but rather a game of unforgiving chess. you have 5 or sometimes less characters and the opposing side can have as few as one (and a very hard one at that) or 10 that can be equally difficult. Unlike the other games terrain makes a huge difference in this game (each landscape is unique and beautifully done) just because you are next to someone doesn't mean you'll hit them they could be standing 20ft above and neither can do anything. another wonderful aspect is the story line full of reading, contemplating and scratching of the head. somedays I would get a huge peice of puzzle just before bed and find myself lying for 20 min trying to figure out where it all fits and how this will affect the main character. Some ppl may find the plot to be either too deep or too complicated, I felt right at home. Even our own past is just as complicated and twisted and I would expect that of a game that is trying to relflect our own world. You can keep your Sephiroth and his standard destroy the world scheme, I'll take the shadowy plots of corruption, cloak and dagger and the dark truth of some of the most trusted ppl in the world that are just as manipulative and far more evil than that which they condemn.
Finally recieving its due as a classic.

I purchased this game when it first game out, and even to this day I will still pick it up to play it through over and over. I remember when it was first released it was not recieved too well, and the split decision seemed to be that it either sucked horribly or that it was a masterpiece. I of course agree with the latter, its just nice to see that over the years the consensus gives the game its due recognition.
That being said, Im not sure if there are people still reading these reviews to decide whether or not to pick up the game. It seems to be just fans like myself raving. However if there are such people out there who have not yet been graced by this fine game and are thinking of picking it up, here is fair warning. Ignore that this is called a final fantasy game, it is not like any of the others of the same series, and not much else other than the names of a few classes and characters bears any relationship to other final fantasy games anyway. You should however note that this game is called a TACTICS game. Ive heard people complain about the poor graphics as well as the slow, tedious, sometimes difficult gameplay. I heard yet another reviewer compare this to a game of chess. This statement is not far off.
If you truly enjoy putting alot of thought and effort into every move, every decision in where to go next, in other words if you like your games a little smarter and a little more difficult, then a game like this might suit your taste. However if you find that your judgement of a game hinges on how loud, how fast, and how flashy a game is, this may not be the type of game for you. I found myself often purposely not leveling up in this game, and picking skills and abilities that were more difficult to use, and that required more planning. Just to make the game more strategic and difficult. (BTW: to the hardcore fans of this game, for this reason, since I first played this game years ago, I have used TG Cid once and only once, the first battle I could use him in. Never again will I use him for fear of killing the fun of the game.) Thats the kind of gamer I am, and I get the feeling that most of the people who really love this game are the same way at least to a certain extent.
So if you like strategy, if you like taking great care in the planning of your every move, if you are as tedious and OCD as I quite possibly am. Then pick this up (like you haven't already). If you havent played this yet, chances are its because you are attracted to flashier games and titles, so be wary. But if you want to try for a challenge, this one is a gem.

Now ive played many of the FF games but none compare to the story this game has. The only ones that come close are FF II, FF VII, and FF X (which don't get me wrong all have simply amazing storylines). I got this game back in the 90's a few years after it came out. And i still play it to this day. Ive never seen another RPG with this kind of replay value. Actually replay is nessessary to fully understand all the twists and turns the story takes. Ive gone through the whole game about 3 times and finally figured out whats going on in the "big picture" Now your probly thinking "this guy must be an idiot"... well im not..you'll just have to take my word for it. Also unless you have the strategy guide or are unquestionably the luckiest person in the world you'll have to go through it at least twice to get all the best weapons like the air knife, vanish manyle, etc. And the secret charatcers like Beowolf and the most famous FF charater ever CLOUD!, and a couple others but i can't be telling you everything now can i or you wouldn't have to buy the game to find out. theres also a job system allowing your small army to consist of everything from squires to mimes. *hint* ninjas with martial arts is quite possibly the most deadly combination ever! *end hint* (This job system is different than the job system from FF X-2 aka Worst FF game to ever be created!)
And Just to prove that this game is everything i say it is...if it wasn't good then why would Square Enix use the same world, Ivalice,in they're upcoming game FF XII
One of the best console games of all time

Final Fantasy is easily one of the best console games ever created. There are many reasons for this, but it all culminates into one solid reason... replayability. There is no other game that I can play over and over again (with each game easily stretching over 40 hours) and not get bored. It takes a lot of assets to make something this replayable. So what are these elements?
1) Game Design: All of the stars must have aligned for the game play to come together the way it did. True character mortality makes the battles more intense. Weather, affinity, facing, luck, agility, are more clearly factors than they usually seem in other games. Character classes and how they can be leveled and discovered is so much fun to explore (Like the monstrous mathmetician and how he to use him well). There are a huge number of spells spread across all of the classes and the variety of the visuals and effects are incredible. There are so many things lurking in the background of this game that make it so incredibly deep and infinitely replayable. It is different every time you play it.
2) Art Direction: The artistic direction of this game is so focused and consistent, that it becomes totally convincing and ultimately haunting. The character design, colors, and shadows create an amazing atmosphere that comes through on every single map. The visuals of the spells are beautiful... bursting with colors and interesting particle effects. At this time, Square's magic spell had such a unique look to them, that it was almost like recognizing a great artist's style. They really stood out that much over the other games out there. Even with the crude polygonal maps and limiting rotoscoped bitmaps, the look of the game is impressive even today, causing the replay value again, to be high, because it is always engrossing to enter this world.
3) Sound: The music for Final Fantasy Tactics is broad in scope and style. The soundtrack takes up 2 cds and to listen to all of the tracks separate from the game amazes with the shear quantity and quality of every song. They range from epic to intimate and are all memorable. Once again, the replayability is bolstered... This time by the excellent soundtrack.
4) Story: This is one of the few times that a convoluted Japanese video game narrative actually improves the game. There is so much going on in this story that there is a dictionary to keep track of all of the characters and events. Because of this boatload of information, and complexity of the story, it never really gets old either, so there goes another one for replayability. Each time you play through, there's a good chance you might pick up a little thing you missed the last time around.
5) Unique Items: The game is packed full of unique items that can be pretty hard to get a hold of. From weapons to characters, there are all kinds of things to track down. If you look through a strategy guide, you will be amazed to see the reems of info on stuff you can go on side quests to get.
I imagine there are lots of people out there with short attention spans who would get bored with Final Fantasy Tactics, so it can't have universal appeal, but anybody with a stitch of patience will get sucked into this game big time. It never seems like a waste of time and is fun and amazing on so many different levels that I could never go into enough detail to give it justice. But I can say that this game has stayed at the top of my list of best games of all time through the last three generations of consoles, and there have been some great games since then, and that's pretty impressive.

This game is truly one of the best of the Final fantasy line. I was very disappointed with FFX, I mean really, compare the story to Legend of Dragoon or any of thousands of Video games! This game had a unique and captivating storyline, charming characters, and vast character development. As a matter of fact, the game is organized based on the development of Ramza. The battle system was one of the best I've ever played, a refreshing change from the entirly turn based system that didn't require a brain to use. Furthermore the graphics and music was charming, not steller in truth, but it worked better for the story than 3-D graphics like FFX had. The game was like experiancing a Fantasy novel, and a good one at that, which I think was the origional intention of RPG games.

Inevitably people ask "what is your favorite game of all time?" Yes, these kinds of questions are unfair, but in order to avoid persuing the issue further, I simply respond "Final Fantasy Tactics."
If your at all interested in turn based strategy games, pick this game up ASAP.
The game was made by the same team at Square as Vagrant Story and it shows in everything from the artistic style to the storyline. If you liked the "feel" of Vagrant Story, you'll like this too.
The story is confused but enjoyable. It is a mature tale involving power and class and church and state all stuggling amidst a time of social upheaval. If this sounds like your bag, sweet. If you'd rather collect Pokemon, thats cool too.
The Jobs system allows you to customize your army and get cool classes like Ninjas. The replay value is tremendous and the enemy AI is challenging.
The graphics are appropriate to the task at hand but they certainly are old fashioned. The artistic direction is great and it isn't as if you need to show anybody the awesome power of your PS1.
So go ahead and click this into your cart.
One of the best!
