as a game this is awsome, it is fun, has a pretty good replay abality, and the story isn't that bad. But before giving it five stars you have to compare it to the rest of the series and basically it doesn't live up to it's predecessors. It tries to go back to the original final fantasy's with the game play, but because of this it is unoriginal and a little bit played-out. It might be unfair to try and compare it to the rest of the series, but this game seems to try and get by on name sake and unless your a die-hard ff fan or else are positive you really want this game, go out and try FF VI or VII because I assure you they are much better

OK, the CG sequences are amazing. The graphics are mostly spectacular (but the fight close-ups are grainy). Unlike some people, I really enjoyed the music, and even the characters appealed to me. But I didn't have any sense of exactly why I was running around. To fight someone evil, to save the world -- but from what exactly? I can't even remember now. There are too many random battles and they're far too easy. There are two characters who basically duplicate each other's roles. As usual, the main character is way too strong. The battle load times are atrocious. And if you actually like playing the card mini-game, check with a psychologist. The crystals are most certainly not back.
Square needs to remember that it's making games, not just pretty pictures. They've made some gorgeous scenes, but they forgot to add gameplay and a compelling story. Maybe they realized they could never top Sephiroth and decided to stop making bad guys with personality. Don't get me wrong; it's still a somewhat fun game, and it's certainly a treat for the senses. But not for the brain.
This game rules! but some setbacks to the game...

This game provided hours of entertainment and lots of heart pumping action. The characters are deeply and magnificently created and molded in a way that only Square could do, and plus the gameplay rocks. The graphics...wow. I didn't think that any graphics on the playstation could be any better than the infamous Dino Crisis, (A platform game, not an RPG) But this game blew all the other so called RPG's out of the water.
you're not going to be able to put this game down. I don't think I'll ever leave those discs out of my playstation...not anytime soon, anyways.
Even if you're not a hardcore final Fantasy fanatic, (I wasn't that much of a fan of them until this game) You will still enjoy this game and be able to follow it well. IT's great fun being able to play so many characters.
But...the reason that I did not give this game five stars is due to the well known fact that it still has that battle system. I don't see how different it is from Final Fantasy Seven...the battle is almost the exact same thing. Why is everyone saying that it's "Different?" I don't see a difference. They're the same thing, only with different power ups and stuff.
And how come during the battle you can't move the characters? You can only use weaponry and potions and all that...you can't actually move in circles around the boss or the enemy...all of your characters just stand there while you wait for your energy and magic bar to refill, so you can finally hit the badguy, (Or bad "Guys")
And also the music...the sound effects...get really, really annoying. Just Steiners armor as he's walking is so annoying that words cannot describe the sheer and complete annoyance. I had to put my TV on Mute because it was so annoying. The music was at times irratating and not at all as good as Final Fantasy seven.
But the game is still fun. I would indeed reccomend buying it, because it is truly excellent. But if you are expecting a different battle system, (Like I was) or just hoping for an easy and short RPG, then do not get this game. You will not find any of those.
But still, like I said, this game does rule. Believe me, I wanted to give this game five stars but when looking at all the factual information that I had gained off of playing it, I realized that this game was not worthy of the excellent and wonderful five stars. Final Fantasy fans, I am sorry.
Kind of a let down ...

I have to say this is not one of the best FF games. Although FFVIII was complicated overall it is a better play than FFIX. The characters in this game seem directed towards a younger crowd and it is hard to really get into the story. It seems that Squaresoft was trying hard to recapture the feel of FFVII and they fell way short with this game. However, that is not to say that it isn't an ok game. There are some positive aspects, for example the graphics are great, it's just not as good a game as I expected.
Not a masterpiece, but still a great game...

I wouldntgo as far as to say FF9 is as good as the recent FF games,or most of the games for that matter, but it is still a great game. The atmosphere of this game is a far cry from FF8's romantic, adult atmosphere. Everything is more comedic and cartoonish, but the graphics are still up to par with recent RPGs, but not very innovative. (They basically look the same as FF7 or FF8). Anyway, I'll break this review down...
Graphics- 9/10 Like I said, they are up to par with games of its time, but are not very innovative. Then again, the Playstation is very limited graphics-wise. But that's what I love about the Playstation one, the games were not all about graphics, unlike the PS2(I am not a fan of PS2 at all, or the recent FF titles.)Anyway, the character designs are a lot more old-school, especially the black mage which looks pretty cool.
Sound- 7/10 This is one of the low-points of this game, the sound isn't that amazing. FF4, 6, tactics, 7, and 8 all have amazing soundtracks, not to mention 5 as well, but this one just doesn't amaze me. After playing through this game several times and mastering it several times, I still don't really remember any tracks in the game. FF8's soundtrack blew me away, so I was hoping for the same here. The only highlights for music are on the start screen, and the world music is pretty good, as well as the battle music.
Gameplay- 10/10The setup is pretty good, making you choose abilities from items that are equipped and learn them. The junction system in FF8 was in my opinion, one of the most innovative systems ever for a video games. This games isn't very innovative, but it's still a great idea that is fun to do. Also, there's synthesis shops now, where you combine items to make armor. (much like FF8s weapon system, except now you can also buy weapons and armor as well.) Overall, this game has a great system that is a lot of fun. The card game isn't nearly as fun as FF8's in my opinion, though. In ff8, you collected cards and then could card mod them, which was also an amazing idea, but in this game the cards seem to do absolutely nothing for the player, other than giving them knowledge that they completed the game 100%, and achieved the highest card collecting level, which is also pointless. Overall, the card game is just a lame re-hash of FF8's Triad game, so dont expect a blast playing cards here, look to ff8 for that.
Controls-10/10 Basically the same controls as in every other ff game. Now there's an exclamation mark which appears over Zidanes head if you are near an item, which was a pretty good idea.
Story- 6/10 This is the games biggest weak point. In my opinion, FF9 has the most forgettable story out of any FF game. Sure, it has its high points( The idea of having summons attack the town was a great idea, and was pretty sweet to watch) But other than that, it didn't leave me feeling amazed. FF4, 6, 7, 8, tactics and heck they all had great storylines, but FF9's is pretty lame. You go after some little guy wearing a thong, and thats about it, it isnt deep like the other titles, although at times it may appear that way. It wasnt the worst storyline, but definitely not up to par.
Overall- 8/10 I have spent a good deal of my life playing this game, since it took a while to master my characters levels and find all the items, and it was definitely worth it. This is a wonderful game that all RPG fans should play.
WAY WAY TO EASY

This is the easiest game in ff. The only reson it gets 3 stars is because of Vivi and Bahamut
Stick with FF7&8

I was quite dissapointed with this game in the series of FF. Graphics were great and all, but it was slow, and it kind of just dragged along. Dull, too. I liked how you could have 4 characters to fight, and that they all had their own talents or whatever. Trances (limits) were awful, they were almost annoying. And movies are great, but I want to play, ya know? There was a movie every other hour, and I finished the stupid game in like a week!
But it wasn't all bad. I liked how they moved a lot, not just stoof there, and I liked how it ended. The characters were also cool, and all very individual. They were kind of weird lookin', but I guess it adds to the other oddities. (Man, their clothes...?) Oh, and the music was pretty too.
All in all, it was an okay game, but if you are going to get a FF game, get 7 or 8.
Blink and you'll miss it!

Hm interesting
Storyline..... ok
Graphics...... average
Characters.... strange to say the least
Difficulty.... train your characters properly and you'll never die
Length........ lets just say that they should have had 15 discs instead of four. I got it on chrismas day .... and its new years eve tomorrow
Addictivity... (is that a word?) ok so i played it non stop until i finished it.
Good Gamingness (ok so im just making stuff up)
........ i thought that despite the dodgey characters ..... a few graphical glitches and a blink and you'll miss it storyline....
I REALLY LIKE THIS GAME
although the others in the series were perhaps slightly better.
P.S
can i tell you a secret?
im not under 13!
shhhhhh dont tell anyone!
Be ready to wait

For the most part, I agree with the other reviewers. However, when it comes to the battle system, I am deeply disappointed. Battles in FFIX are insanely ill-paced. There are large pauses in action between one attack and the next. I would literally read a book while in a battle because I had so much time. Another complaint that I have is the exaggerated metaphors that square offers. Square would do everything except write the metaphor on the screen. I won't spoil the story for you, but the writers must think that we don't have half a mind between all of us. If you think that you could wait out the battle system and the poor demonstration of the story, then I highly reccomend this game. But if you are as big a fan of the previous two games as I am, then I reccomend a good book to go along with it.
Good, but...

Most people like this game the most out of the three FF's for the Playstation. I, personally, thought that VIII was the best in the series with VII coming in second and this in third.
I'll start with what I like about the game. The story is awesome, even though it is quite simple. The FMV's really add to the atmosphere, like always. The graphics are great (the super-deformed characters didn't seem to bother me as much as other people) and it is the hardest of the three Playstation FF's (although not by much). The music is also great. I usually don't remember many pieces from games because I'm too caught up in gameplay and the story, but some pieces are just too good to forget.
Now with what I don't like. The gameplay. All of it. This game is like watching a movie. First of all, the magic system was horrible. There was no where near as much customization as allowed in FFVIII and FFVII. I think I spent a total of five minutes in the entire game equipping spells. I really enjoyed stat-tweaking system of FFVIII and, even though it's not quite what FFVIII's junction system was, FFVII's materia system. This game had nothing like that. I believe they tried to merge FFVI's and FFVII's magic system, but they failed miserably. Secondly, the battles were too easy. The final boss is even easier than Chrono Cross' (which is really saying something.). Even though some earlier bosses make the game harder than the other PSX titles, again, this game didn't have the great customization that FFVII and FFVIII had, therefore making it weak in both aspects. And although the music on the most part was great, I really disliked Melodies of Life. Not that I thought that the song was bad, I just couldn't stand the singer's voice. They should have had Faye Wong sing it. I still remember the first time I heard Eyes on Me (which was awesome.). Radical Dreamers from Chrono Cross is still the best theme song in my opinion, though.
If you're thinking about buying this game, you should first consider what you look for in an RPG. If the story is the one and only aspect of the game that matters to you, definitely buy this game. However, if you also look for gameplay, rent it first to see if it suits you.
