I have played every Final Fantasy game and this is by far the worst of them. I hurried through the game to get to the end so that I could say that I have beat it. I didn't even do the side quests do to the fact that the game sucked so bad. The story line lacked in all areas and the characters were horrible. I am ashamed that squaresoft put a Final Fantasy name on the game. Only buy this game if you are trying to complete a Final Fantasy collection, otherwise it isn't worth the money.
What happened to the challenge?!?

I was really dissappointed in this game, for several reasons. The biggest being that it was incredibly simple. Not only did we go back to having stupid characters and a silly equipment system, there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING DIFFICULT AT ALL about this game. It took almost two hours to defeat Ultimecia in FFVIII. It took an hour and a half to defeat the weapons in FFVII. There was not a single difficult fight in the entire game in part 9. The last boss only took 10 minutes to beat. The ending was pretty good, but I did not really feel like I had accomplished anything when I beat it. I really hope the guys at Squaresoft will go back to the style of FFVII and VIII when they do the next game, because those were just incredibly good games. I don`t understand why people would want to " go back to their roots " when they have made so much progress. The characters in IX were no where near as cool as in previous games ( infact, all of them except for garnett and vivi were downright irritating ). I just hope they can do a better job with FFX.

Okay, this is one of the saddiest final fantasy game I've ever played.
Battle system: ok but not good
Characters: kinda ugly and predicable
Game play: pointless, boring, etc.
Graphics: great as always, but the scenery graphics [are not good]
...IMPORTANT: If you're looking for a GOOD game, then get Final fantasy 7,8 and MAYBE 10.
sorry for rating low, but it wasn't good

no this wasn't good at all. I don't like the fact that Eiko and Garnet are supposed to have "horns". Queen Brahne is seriously ugly. Although this was okay for a PlayStation game if you know what i mean. i still like FFVIII and FFVII more than this, and of course i like FFX a WHOLE LOT more than this. Steiner, Adelbert Steiner, ring a bell? doesn't that name have a surprising resembleness to Albert Einstein? i'm sorry for saying it's bad, but still this game is OK. not the worst, it's not THAT dramatic like FFVIII and FFX and FFVII so i'm not happy. but still this game is OK. it's worth a try, although i don't see me playing this again. i like the fact that you get to name every character, that's pretty awesome...
Good but not as much as FF8

Another Final Fantasy and yet again a new battle system, set of characters, abilities, etc.; to learn. The game is itself pretty good; there is a good amount of FMV (compared to Parasite Eve 2 that almost does not have any) and they are even better than before.
It's yet another Square games that takes all my nights until I've explored everything with the game. Unfortunately, the story line, thought good, is not close to be as good as it was in FF8. In my memory, you could almost feel to be in the game with FF8 while FF9 is just a "good story".
The other thing is that I find this ability system a little bit more awkward than it previously was. One thing to notice is the SUMMONING capabilities which only 2 characters can have and you can't use it much before the end of CD2 (unless you wish to train the princess a lot in the first CD and use her eidolons).
Beyond that, it's still a great game.
A great Game for its time; A great game for our time

Final Fantasy Nine usually rates as my favorite Final Fantasy and here's why.... The mood of the game. I mean look at the popular RPG's. There not fun (keep reading before you bite my head off). They are a lot of things. They're enticing. They're beautiful. They're intracite. They're complex. They're mezmorizing. They're entertaining. But how often have you played an RPG like Final Fantasy 8 or The Legend of the Dragoon and thought to yourself in a carefree fashion "Wow, this is really fun!" Certainly you don't think that when a main character dies, or when a kingdom is under attack. You feel what your characters feel. I mean that's the beauty of an RPG. Its the ultamite interactive novel designed to send you on a powerful emotional roller coaster. That is why they're so enticing. Because unlike the average fighting or sports game, an RPG strikes up your emotions, your imagination, and so much more. Does Final Fantasy 9 do that? YES! Then why is it different... because the first and primary emotion the author (not programmer) wants you to feel is a sense of fun, an element that is far too sparse in the realm of RPG.... So lets go over why.
1. Have you seen the graphics. When paired side by side with its immediate predicessor, you would think that 8 came first. The graphics are what set the mood, and the mood is a light, bright, carefree mood. The characters lack the dark setting that exists in almost every other RPG. Come on... How can you look at ViVi and not smile. (you'll find out as you get more imersed in his story... but for now look at him as the cute, would be helpless except he's super powerful mage that we all love and adore)
2. Listen to the music. Sure their are the serious and sometimes dark moment that drives all RPGs, but the general music of this game is pleasant and free. If you just close your eyes, you'll find that you quickly are at peace.
3. The comedy. No story (including RPG's) can succeed without at least tickling the funny bone. Even the tragedies of the world need a little relief in order to set you up for a fall. This game has plenty, and I think you'll find yourself chuckling at Zidane (the main character) and his constant advances towards the Princess Garnet.
Now don't think that this doesn't have that serious and intriguing story line. Like all good games the world is threatened by a great evil, and believe me, you'll find yourself wanting more of this. But the fact of the matter is most people at some point and time get bored with an RPG. The fun factor of this helps keep that boredom at bay. I highly recommend this game to everyone and anyone who wants to truly enjoy an RPG, especially if this is your first one. So please give it a chance.... you won't regret it

I didn't think that anything could beat FF7. When I put the FF9 CD in my PS and turned it on, I immediately knew I was wrong as soon as I heard the music in the opening FMV. The game has a whole lot of character development. Throughout the game you learn more about the character as well as their past. And if you don't think that Vivi is the coolest as soon as you see him, you need to get your brain checked. The music is awesome. It fits the game's medieval style perfectly. I was impressed by the graphics. The characters aren't all fuzzy as in the previous 2 games. Not to say that they were bad but they were just majorly refined and cleaned up for FF9. If you enjoy playing any Final Fantasy you will love this game.
This game's sweet!

I haven't bought it yet, but I've played some of it, and this game is sweet! The graphics are awesome, it's got a great storyline, it's the most addictive Final Fantasy ever, and being the hardcore gamer that I am, I've played all of them, even the ones from Japan, except for the ones that were released on Gameboy, because I had doubts about them, plus they aren't part of the series anyway, just spinoffs. I have been with it through its best (FF7), its worst (FF2 for NES), and its good (all the rest), and this game dethrones Final Fantasy VII as the best Final Fantasy ever!

Square takes the player back to the style and mentality of FFVI and earlier--the sword-and-sorcery, the differentiation of character types and weaponry--and mixes it with the state-of-the-PlayStation graphics for which they're best-known.
Pluses:
The characters. There are more differences of opinions between the good guys then there are confrontations with the bad guys. The scorecard keeps changing until you're not sure who's on your side and who isn't. Add to that the "guiding statements" that Square presents for each character (Zidane: "VIRTUE - You don't need a reason to help someone") and you've got quite a volatile mix of personalities.
The cut scenes. Simply astounding...it's not possible to over-praise the CG work that Square does on the FF titles.
The combat system. Familiar, yet different. Easy to learn whether or not you've ever played an FF game before.
Moogles and Chocobos. The Moogles figure in no fewer than two of the side quests, and Chocobo Hot-and-Cold is a fun way to acquire some of the more obscure treasures.
Minuses:
Slow start. Almost an hour of game time goes by before it actually matters what you have equipped, what spells you can use, and what those little green gems are. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, and laughed out loud the first time I played the swordfight between Zidane and Blank, but I found myself waiting for the real meat of the game to kick in...the part that my participation actually affected.
Forward, forward, forward. The game constantly drives you along its linear story path--there are a not many places where you can just break from the action and go explore the world. Often, the effort to turn around and explore an area you just came from is rewarded by the character being yanked from your control and saying something on the order of "I think escaping takes top priority right now!" or "Steiner has everything under control." It makes it difficult to get out and put in a proper effort to achieve the side quests and optional bosses.
All in all, a spectacular effort from Square, easily replayable and worth the time invested. "Normal" play time is somewhere around 60 hours, but you can easily top 100 if you probe this broad, deep world to its fullest. If half-stars were possible, I'd go 4.5 because of the two minuses, but...ehn, give 'em something more for presentation, I say: graphics and music unparalleled in any game.
