After over a year of waiting for this title, I feel dissapointed. Don't get me wrong, on it's own, this is a great game. Compared to many games out there, this is one of the best, an all time great. But compared to Final Fantasy VII and VIII, this is a somewhat poor effort.
I am not a Final Fantasy follower, the first one I played was VII and the only other one I've played is VIII, so as far as this review is concerned, I will only be talking about the new generation of the game.
The graphics are good. The FMV sequences are breathtaking. However, in both cases, they are no different to the quality of graphics and FMV in FFVIII. Infact, with the cartoon-style characters, you could even say that the graphics on FFVIII are better. The storyline is up to the usaual high standard, not as good as VII, equal with VIII. The sound is virtually the same as the previous two adventures also. The game itself has introduced an ability system, not complicated but more stupid. Why can only 2 characters use summons? Limit breaks are not as good or easy to get. Zidane looks like a girl! The characters are not as good as they could have been and nowhere near as good as the cast of FFVII and FFVIII.
Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love the game. It is in my top ten all time favourite games. It is a great title. However, compared to previous games, this is not as good. If you're new to the series, buy 7 then 8. Don't buy 9 first because then 7, WHEN you buy it, won't blow you away (as much). Playing 9 I didn't have the same passion to play it. With the other titles I was on them for ages, hours and hours at a time but when it came to 9, I just found it irritating and annoying - Like I'm saying I can't be bothered to play this. It's not as addictive, if you've played the others anyway, and not as gripping - it still keeps you glued to the screen but not in the same way that VII and VIII did. Maybe I'm getting bored of the series after playing VII and VIII to death. You decide - in the end this is just my opinion.
BTW: The card game 'Tetra Master' is crap - TRIPLE TRIAD IS MUCH BETTER.

i hate this game. The Characters are too young- i mean Zidane and Dagger are 16!! also, Zidane is a pretty flat character compared to squall, and garnet is ugly compared to rinoa. and look at the field characters! What happened to the tall, detialed characters from FF8? The only reason im giving this 2 stars was because of the music scores. in my opinnion you should buy FF8 first. Better graphics, etter everything.

if you like ff 8,10,11,or 12 then DON'T buy this game!!! this game is so different from the other series and you can't stay as one character for most of the game!! also the biggest disappointment is the way they make the game so it would not be fun for teens, but only for really small kids. it's so dumb, god i can't say enough how i got suckered into buying this.
the other reviewers must be on drugs. i wish i could make this note be seen everytime someone browse this game.

Where is the quality from the last game Final Fantasy VIII?
I mean the game doesn't interest me at all in the beginning, it is too manga and comic relief inspired, and has no real seriousness about it. This makes this a less "hardcore" experience than the Final Fantasy 8.
I miss the depth in the characters, and I also miss the complex story that was so evident in 7, and 8. Bad game! I just hope they increase the dark feel of the next game, because this one was too goodie goodie for my taste.
A nostalgic experience

If only Nobou Uematsu's music were any better on this game, there would be no question that this game deserved a perfect score. The biggest selling point for me on this game were the story and the characters. The theme is more lighthearted than the previous two and the characters are just believable and endearing. One must feel good to root for an underdog such as Vivi. The classic superdeformed characters and past elements relating to the fantasy world are back and it gives some nostalgia to anyone who missed the fantasy settings of the past. The four player battle system is back and the ability system is much simpler than the previous junction and materia of the past two final fantasies. For anyone who relishes a great game, this final fantasy is definitely worth it.
Review from an old school FF Player

To start off, people who gave this game a poor review are obviously not old school FF Gamers... I have had the FF series in my blood since Kindergarten. Waaay back in the days of FF1. I still remember the Thrill of Beating Golbez in FF2, and getting FuSuYa in my party. I still remember the first time I saw a moogle in FF3, teehee, theyre so great. And if anybody out there considers themselves an officiendo on the FF series, then this game is for you. I LOVED IT. It brings back the sense of adventure so many experienced with FF3, god knows i'll never forget it. As for the people who Bashed this game, you obviously started playing FF around FF7. I mean c'mon, complaining about deformed characters? TRY PLAYING AN FF GAME WITH CHARACTERS WHO CAN BE MEASURED IN SQUARE PIXELS AND TELL ME ABOUT DEFORMED CHARACTERS! As for everyone else, get this game and do yourself a favor. ^_^
A Good Game, Though Not the Best . . .

Of the three Final Fantasy games I have played (VII, VIII, and IX), I must say that I enjoyed this one the least. While VII and VIII grabbed and held my attention right away, I struggled to continue on with this game. The battle system irritated the crap out of me. I can't exactly pinpoint why--it was pretty much the same as the previous two--but regardless, I got so fed up with it that I neglected to level up at all, and by the time I reached the boss in Gizamulke's Grotto, I was so weak that I just gave up and restarted months later.
Even on my second time through, I had a hard time getting into it. The FMVs and graphics were visually stunning, and the plot intriguing at times, but it really didn't hold my attention at all. I continued to go through the game with minimal leveling, hating the non-boss battles, and having a hard time. The Chocobo Hot and Cold game was rather amusing to pass the time, but the extent to which you had to play it grew irritating beyond words. As far as I know, the only way you can get certain character's ultimate weapons (Zidane's included) is to reach the Chocobo's Sky Garden, which takes a lot of time and digging, and if you don't like the game, then it really bites. I also disliked the way that you learn skills from weapons and accessories. You have to keep old weapons on for far longer than you might like to learn skills. The Materia and Junction systems of the previous two games are far superior to this.
Overall, I'd say that while I liked the characters, the rest of the plot and the gameplay was simply too tedious for me to fully enjoy it. The final boss was difficult, which was a refreshing change from those of VIII and VII, though that could be primarily due to the fact that I was at or under level 50 when I took it on. The ending was beautiful. I'd say that this game is worth a play through, though I doubt I'll ever play it a second time. It was worth the money, I suppose, though I'll never get as much use out of it as I have my other two FF games.
Not bad.

O.K. I know that I am going to sound like one of those jerks who have to dump on everything, but I have to say this game just does'n t do it for me. It has nice graphics and cute characters and all, but this game is just O.K. My problems with this game is that the story is lame (I mean really. Can you remember what this game is about?) An even lamer bad guy, and forgettable music. Also, there are just too few memorable moments. And I think that's what it all comes down to. Final Fantasy IX is a good game, and deffinatly worth playing, but it is not a game that you would have to replay. It also has the cheapest last boss in any Final Fantasy ("Hi! I'm a character you've never heared anything about or seen at all yet through the entire game, and I'm the last boss!" What the ... is that?!). Good but not great.

First I'll go over the good points. The graphics are incredible, the characters are interesting, and the story easily grabs one's curiosity. If this were a movie, I'd watch it over and over again. And Vivi rules as a character.
Unfortunately, this isn't a movie, it's a game, but for some reason, the creators forgot this. You have very little choice in the game. You watch a few minutes of movie, then get a character to maneuver through and area. You have freedom to move the character, but the game basically "persuades" you to take certain routes to progress the story. "Do you want to go left or right? You go left? Well you're supposed to go right. Go ahead left. Nothing will happen until you go right."
You even play the characters trying to stop the heroes, such as the knight. So in otherwords, you have to escape, yet you play the character trying to stop the characters from escaping, yet you don't have any real choices. You move until the action continues.
Battles are all right. Both sides battle back and forth until the story continues. Whatever happened to random battles to gain experience?
Maybe I'm missing the point of modern RPG's. As a movie, Final Fantasy is excellent. But I don't want a movie in which I have to keep pressing buttons or get a character to wander aimlessly to adavance a story. Sorry to all fans of this, but I prefer a little more choice.

Im writing this to tell you that this game sux. The charaters look like kids one of the the charaters is a chicken and the story is bad. Im just saying square when down after making good games like ff7 and ff8 those had good storys and cool graphices. But ff9 has none of those elements. I was very disapointed to see this game like this. The best i could give this game was 2 stars.
