This game is a new step for Squaresoft. I have played through a ton of squaresoft games, including most Final Fantasy`s, and I am more pleased than ever to play this game.
The game takes on a relatively new concept over normal character design. Returning to a more innovative design than the human approach the characters are short with larger heads. This adds more of a fantasy demi-human look, but at first they may look strange. This can be a little odd to some people, but you will adopt the principle fairly quickly. The old style turn-based attack has returned, and is carried out very well. A few new elements are introduced when equipping armor and items, which adds a spin on the old design. Job classes are returning, where each character is set to an ability. Like Black Mages cast Dark Magic and Dragoons use spears and incredible leaps. This is a familiar concept from other Final Fantasy`s, take it from me, I know. When comparing it to FFVII and FFVIII, it ups the standard for gaming again. Seven was groundbreaking, but Eight did seem too similiar to its predecessor. Nine breaks in new ground, following the Squaresoft tradition of evolving its games, instead of building on old. Buy this game. I doubt you will regret it. It`s a beautifully designed game, and is the next line of Final Fantasy.
Timeless...

This was the very first Final Fantasy game I've played, and I love it. Since last year I've tried several of the Final Fantasy games, and I must say this is my absolute favourite.
I won't bother trying to explain the whole story, as it would take several of hours to do so? however I will say that the story is fabolous and will suck right ind! if you're not careful (ha).
Simply this game has the most memorable characters I've ever played, first we have Zidane! a skilled thief with the desire to help and to gain the trust of the party completely, but in his onw way seeking his past and true existence. Then we have Princess Garnet (Dagger), a young teenage girl, with a little knowledge of how the world outside her castle functions, but as their journey expands, she will gain the right and proper knowledge of how things should rightfully be. Steiner, what can I say? the ever faithful and loyal bodyguard of Garnet, this man has given me quite some laughs throughout the game. Eiko, a little brad, in her own right, she secretly desire Zidane, but with the princess in the way, she's blocked from ever getting him (damn you Garnet..hehe). Amarant, the solitairy guy who joins the party after he lost to Zidane in a battle, very little is know about his past, he seems very harsh but as you will see, he really has a soft spot. And then theres Quina, a chef, a big mama with a huge fork, although we really don't know if she's a male or a female. S/he joins the party to gain knowledge of the many recipies and munchies of the world, s/he's given me so many laughters, she is truly a gem in the world of the Final Fantasy. And at last, the ever loving Vivi, I've been emotionally moved by this little guy, he's seeking the reason of his existence, only to the discover the horrific truth of his doomed race, If I would say more about him, it spoil everything for you. The game has many, many places to explore and I doubt you'll find them all the first time, so many secret places, so many optional bosses, but hey no complains from this human, I simply adore it. Another reason why I love this game so much, is the beautifully detailed enviroments, I was completely convinced, that this game is the most beautiful graphically Final Fantasy game ever. Another reason why love is because of the disspoinment I suffered, while watching Final Fantasy 8, the game was terrible. Although I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 7, it had some very lovable characters. But the final love for the series came this year, when I bought Final Fantasy Origins, I was overjoyed when I played these classics, and actually Final Fantasy 2, has grown to be my number third favourite Final Fantasy game ever, #1: Final Fantasy 9, #2: Final Fantasy 7, #3: Final Fantasy 2 (Origins). This serie has given me so many hours of joy, laughs and tears, and will forever stay in my memory and in my heart.
Sencerely my deepest rescpect to the creators.
Love, laughs and tears.
Reno,

I started out my Final Fantasy experince with VII, and I was looking for something like that when I picked up IX - exciting, twisted plot, hidden charecters, and more angst than you can shake a stick at. You know, the works.
I was sorely dissapointed. Yes, the graphics were a definite step up from VII (I haven't played eight, so I wouldn't know the in between) but the FMVs were only slightly more detailed and a bad story can send even the greatest graphics plunging into darkness.
The plot and charecterization is definitly lacking in many vital areas, for example the 'main charecter' doesn't even get a story until the end of disk two/begining of disk three or there abouts.
All in all there are about two likable charecters in the whole game, one who actually gets a story, and another who is barely built upon. As for the princess and her monkey-tailed hero, supposedly two of the main charecters, they are both either annoyingly happy, flirty, determined, mood-swingish or all of the above. Aka, they're nothing like real people.
The story line has a few good points, but there seems to be a running theme - find a city, watch it get destroyed. And as cool as mass destruction is, the plot stops twisting after a while.
The battle system is both annoying and confusing, with 'abilities' that you equip. If you forgot an ability, you have to go back an equip a level one weapon to learn it when your on disk three and quiet frankly, thats just annoying.
There are two kinds of people: Fighters, and magic casters. If the magic casters run of MP, their hits barely cause any damage, and if the enemy is equipped with a counter attack skill and you're a fighter, your pretty much dead. Ya, it's kinda unbalenced.
I'm glad I only had to pay half of the fourty bucks my brother and I paid for this game, because if I shelled out that much cash on my own for this game, I think I'd have to shoot myself.
YES this is a good game, BUT....

Okay, YES this was a good game. All final fantasy games are. Only, I think square could have done alot better with this game. It almost seems like they just got this game out there without any serious thought just to pacify the hungry crowd until FFX was completed. Now, I have no complaint towards the artistry of this game. It is the one thing that captured me right away to the very end. The backgrounds, characters, and cinematics are absolutely breathtaking. The world is large and full of extra sidequests and mini-games (frog-catching and chocobos of course!), increasing its replay value. But every gamer knows that the game design isn't everything. Game play, character development and plot is a really big chunk. For the most part, they were all very good, in keeping with the squaresoft tradition, but there are a few things that really bothered me, and I wanted to get them off my chest.
For one, the "limit breaks" in this game were very frustrating. It took a long time to charge them up (from getting attacked), and once the meter was full, it automatically goes off. The actual attacks the character is capable of aren't the issue. It's the fact that once you hit that limit, and the battle is over, your meter goes back to zero, whether you were able to take advantage of that "limit break" or not. This was very inconvenient, because you couldn't control when it was going to happen, and save it especially for a boss battle.
Zidane wasn't the greatest hero. I think they could have done alot better. It just seemed like another "I'm a lab creation" as in FFVII, only with a tail. The very final boss in the game was extremely random. The individual of central conflict changes from the Queen, to Zidane's killer angel counterpart, and once he is defeated at the end of the game, another Boss shows up out of nowhere and says: I'm going to destroy the world. My first question was, "where the heck did you come from and what do you have to do with the rest of the game?" I missed the connection. It was either really random, or very vague. I've only played it once, though. Maybe I did miss something.
Aside from those issues, I did enjoy playing FFIX for the piece of art that it was, and I absolutely adored Vivi and the noble Freia.
there are better games

well,i thought this game was quite interesting at fist but then it just got too long, the storyline was becoming reallly confusing, the characters werent opening up,and the characters were not all introduced in disc one.final fantasy 8 had characters worth caring about, they were all introduced in disc 1,and they were all normal size!i thought each final fantasy was supposed to beat the previuos one.guess that does not stand true after 8.i thought the graphics were good, but graphics do not make the game.the attacks of some of the monsters had really bland names, like for instance..."head","anttenna",and my favorite"left tentacle". all though i am not happy with this game,it is my opinion and you can definately dissagree with me.
THIS IS THE BEST GAME I'VE PROBABLY PLAYED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(I am doing this report for FF9 on PS1 and2) I've played video games but not any like THIS before!! Despite the semi-good graphics, it has a GREAT story line and even some options for easier play! If you don't like games with many disks, I might recommend it. The game is 4 disks long, but each one of them is short but on the other hand it's tricky. This game is a role-playing game that can be 2 player, but only in battles. One player controls some characters, while the other player controls the rest available. There can be 4 characters in your 1 party, which is more than other games so if you like having more people on your party, this would be the one. One thing I'll recommended is if a character in your party is low on HP, go on the defensive, like using a hi-potion on Zaidane when he's at 136HP. All I'll say is GET THIS if you like role-playing games. Heak, all the Final Fantasy games are GREAT! I own FF9, 8, and4 and frequently borrow FF7 from my friend. I also LOVE the Chrono Series. I've beaten Chrono Trigger and now to move onto the sequel, CHRONO CROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See me in my other reviews, after this. This is my first one

Personally, i absolutely loved this game. it definately makes up for the horrible "love-story" POS that was FF8. But anyway, the characters and the story are absolutely original and wonderfully put together. The plot is great and theres even a little mini-game where you collect and "battle" cards. though they dont really battle, its more of a strategic card-placing game where the object is to obtain more squares of your color on the boardthan your opponent. pretty simple, and actually entertaining. This game requires many hours of gameplay, which is great, and is a must-have for any FF fan or just someone who loves RPGs
A sabatoged idea

Do you remember how in Final Fantasy 7 every time Cat Saith opened his fat mouth you flinched? Now imagine a game where every character spews forth stupidity at that very same level. You have just seen Square's tragic addition to a once great game. I will give you this... the CGs are amazing... the music is fair and the overall graphics are fabulous. Hoverever I am afraid to tell you that everything else is not on par.
The plot does not start out with a bang! Destroying a Mako Reactor was a bang! Final Fantasy 7 immediatly immersed one in a completely frabulous world... Final Fantasy 9 starts one out in a world of boredom. There is an incredibly boring intro... at no point in any game should one start out by having to explore a town!
Some people may like the characters. However the characters did match with me. Cloud was cool. Squal interesting. Zidane made me want to laugh. Zidane is a warrior but is a monkey! Those two things don't really mix. A warrior should act like a warrior. In short the main characters looked like kids; I couldn't take any of them seriously! Final Fantasy lacked a villian of the calibar of Sephiroth. Sephiroth and Kefka and Globez were all great villians. There was true intigue and evil in these characters... ( I know Golbez turns good in the end)
The battle system is incredibly simple. The skills and abilities are incredibly simple. The cinimatic intro into each battle is exausting. Battles are a hassle in this game like no other game in this series. Perhaps Square could look to Final Fantasy tactics' job system for help.
Many of the ideas that worked in the 2d Final Fantasy 2 did not work in a richer world. Sorry... but I can't verbalize this argument because it is such a gut feeling... ummm... rent this game you'll understand how I feel.
In my opinion, Final Fantasy 9 must have been an effort by Square to attract the next generation to the Final Fantasy series because only a kid would like the "kid characters" and the mundane battle system. Final Fantasy didn't work for me... PLEASE rent this game before you buy it.
