Square's last and best Final Fantasy for PSX

Final Fantasy 9 is square's last one of its series for the playstation. The game goes back to its roots with this game with medievil surroundings and big headed characters. While not being as realistic as 7 and 8, this has a charm of its own. It has gorgeous graphics, strong gameplay, and of course what the franchise is most famous for - A highly enjoyable and emotionable story

About a month before I bought this game, I had my doubts about doing so. I had just finished FF7 and FF8 and I wasn't sure that I wanted to get into another RPG. So I decided to see what other people thought about it. I must've read over 200 reviews from countless sites. Most of them said that it was good, but "was missing something." When I checked my favorite gaming site, I saw that they too, had given it a mediocre rating. But finnally, after a week of reviews, I decided that I was thinking too much about the situation and just went out and bought the game! I am SO glad that I did.

Final Fantasy IX is the best final fantasy game that the Playstation has to offer. It suceedes in every way an RPG can: Graphics, Characters, Storyline, World design, Battle System, Cinema Scenes... I just can't tell you how good it is.

As you proobably have already heard, FF9 is the shortest game in the series, and I like it that way. The game is totally driven by the storyline and you never have a chance to get bored, unlike FF8 where there were many instances when I was almost in tears and screaming "is it over yet?" And just because its an hour or so shorter than the usualy Final Fantasy game, doesn't mean that its any less challenging. There are enough lengthy sidequests and secret bosses to keep any gamer satisfied. Plus there is the ultimate challenge- if you beat the game in under 12 hours (which is less than a third of the time it took me to finish), you will get Excaliber 2, the best weapon in the game!

There's just so much stuff that I could praise about in this review. FF9's graphics are smother than ever. The cinema scenes have never been so detailed. The battles are acutally enjoyable (instead of a nuisance). Each character (with the exception of Quina) has a interesting history and strong personality. I could just go on and on...

I hate to say it, but I have to: There are a few weak points in the game. One of these is the card game. Its not as fun as in FF8 and depends more on luck than strategy. The second weak point is that the Playstation is putting limits on the amount of things that this game can do with four discs (an example of this is how Squaresoft has to prevent you from entering certain towns towards the end of the game, in order to conserve memory). This is more of a complaint that a problem, but I whish there was a place like FF7's Golden Saucer, where you can replay all of the mini-games. The last problem in FF9, is that it suffers from a weak ending. When I had finally reached the ending of the game, there were many aspects of it that weren't explained and that didn't make sense (you'll know what I mean when you get there). And how come the cinematic finally is only 8 minutes, when FF8's was over a half of an hour?

All in all, Final Fantasy's diapointments aren't nearly enough to bring it down (in my opinion). If you are still questioning whether or not to by this game, put your fears aside and just buy it already. If you don't, you won't know what you'll be missing.

P.S. If you have a life, then be cautious about buying this game. It is so easy to get addicted to it, and pretty soon, you won't think about anything else except for finishing the game! Scary, isn't it?

4 1/2

Final Fantasy IX is all-in-all, a wonderful game, as expected. But I didn't think that it had the appeal of the previous two games. FFVII was a masterpiece in itself, breaking nearly all RPG boundaries, while FFVIII was the second on the market, hate it or love it, you have to admit that it deserves recognition either way. While I thought that FF9 would be a GOD send (taking into account ALL the wonderful reviews about it), I have to admit that it was a bit of a disappointment. Don't misunderstand, it's a great game with a LOT of references of the Final Fantasys past (trust me... there are a LOT of references...), however, I just didn't think that it broke any HUGE barriers. It's nothing 'ground-breaking', really. The FMVs were beautiful and pleasing to the eyes. The characters (while somewhat superdeformed) were beautifully rendered. The thing that I really liked about this game, was the gameplay. It's so simple and yet, I found it fun to customize them. It's a fairly easy game with easy bosses, etc etc. The graphics are, to say the LEAST, definitely Final Fantasy. The battle/field graphics are surely the best of any Final Fantasy. The characters were all very loveable (especially Vivi ^^) and of course, interesting and at times, deep (this game returns to the more lighthearted mood & scene of the older Final Fantasy RPGs that were first available for the SNES). Everything about this game was incredible, but the drop in half a point was due to the story. The beginning had me BORED STIFFED. I scrolled through the dialogue more than I read it. The story just didn't catch my interest, although I asure you that it gets better. So in a nutshell, this game is definitely worth it--if you're willing to sit through about an hour of needless and rather boring dialogue. But that shouldn't stop you from getting the game. It's truly a classic, albiet a bit slow in the beginning. If you're still not sure about this game, rent it and give it a try to see if it's your thing.

I expected something much better

This game is just boring and it didn't keep my intrest at all. The characters are kind of bland. The battle sequences are confusing and boring at the same time. I just didn't like it. I know that nobody here is going to agree with me the slightest bit.

this game kicks a**

Okay, so I havnt played this game yet, but Ive seen it, and everyone Ive talked to who has it says its awsome. But the reason Im writing this is to tell people to shutup, I mean Im sitting here looking at the reviews, and I see all these stupid reviews where people give the game one star, and then go on and on about how cool FF7 is and that you should buy that. Well, I own 7, and I would rather see why you DONT like the game than why I should go buy FF7. If you like 7 so much go write a review for it. All Im asking is to see real reviews. Okay thanks.

This is my favorite game out of PS2 and PS games. It is really fun and really long. I have been playing for a really long time and I haven't beaten the first disc. Anybody who has doubts about buying this game don't worry. You are sure to like. I mean LOVE it.

Sure, it's a fun game, but it's drawbacks are far too many to justify a score of more than three stars.

My biggest gripe with this game is the absolute lack of originality. Every aspect of this game, from the storyline to the gameplay, has been lifted from previous titles in the series. The ability system comes directly from final fantasy 6. Sure, you use equipment to learn spells instead of Espers, but the method of aqquisition (fighting for AP) remains exactly the same. Additionally, many of the abilities are ones you shouldn't have to earn. For example, you have to earn an ability to use the status effects that certain weapons transfer to enemies.

A monarch of a once peaceful kingdom falls under the influence of a stranger and begins attacking neighboring countries. Sound familiar? Well, I'd say that it describes the first act of Final Fantasy IV, but the brilliant scenario writers of FFIX seemed to think it would make for a dandy story arc as well, and did so little to differentiate this game from it's predicessors that it's sickening.

The game is horribly unbalanced. Apparently it's "challenging," but I find very little challenge in using the same old techniques against monsters who do more damage, and having to buy copious amounts of healing potions. At points in the game, some classes are rediculously more powerful than others. For example, Zidane may do 400 damage with a physical attack, while Vivi does 96 damage with his most powerful spell. Also, the battle system is unbelievebly sluggish. The time you encounter an enemy to the time you input your first command can be upwards of 10 seconds (which may not sound like much, but it really gets irritating). There are also serious problems with lag time. You have to wait precious seconds for your character to execute a physical attack, something which should be instantaneous.

And the dungeons! Ye Gods! The Dungeons! Many of the dungeons are short and mind numbingly straight forward. How do they balance this out, you ask? By making you fight every three steps! What -MASTERS- of game design! And did I mention that at one point you're stuck with a party of a thief, two white mages, and a black mage.

What else . . . Oh, yeah! At many points the game becomes childish and embarassing. I could have gone my entire life without seeing anthropomorphic rats riverdance.

The graphics, I'll admit, are great. The field backgrounds are expertly rendered, and don't have the sterile look that many games with similar graphics have. The battles graphics, while detailed are blocky and muddy; I much prefer simpler, cleaner graphics, a style which suits the PSX much better.

In short, the game fails in originality, story and gameplay, where Its predicessors shined. Sure it's fun. More fun, in fact than much of the tripe on the market. It's more fun than Donkey Kong 64, but so's a poke in the eye. While doing a traditional and RPG isn't a bad thing in itself, it is when the games other qualities don't pull it above the muck. You can get either both FFVII and VIII or Final Fantasy Anthology (FFV and VI) for roughly the same price of this game, and either choice would be the better one. Sorry, Sakaguchi, Skies of Arcadia and Vagrant Story tie for best RPG of 2000

A lot of people have called FFIX a throwback to VI, people may have liked the "Junction" & "Gaurdian Force" system (don't get me wrong I liked it too) Now it is unfair to call this game a throwback. Now it does go back to the "Job" system, and several other key things that made FFIV what it was. First off, in terms of scope this is NOT a throwback, from a 16-bit Cartridge(SNES) to FOUR 32-bit CDs. About 8 times the size of VI. But even with that, people called FFIV possibly the greatest in the series, and the same writers signed on for IX. If you love the Final Fantasy series then add this to your collection. But please, if your picking out the tiny little barely noticiable things, then rent this game first before buying it and then cry and moan about it. Final Rating: Recomended to Final Fantasy fans

One Of The Best!!!

This is a wonderful, amazing, creative, exciting RPG! I mean there are a few things I don't like about it, but come on, that doesn't means it isn't one of the best. The best way to talk about it would be to compare it to other PSone FF's. So here it goes.

FFVII vs. FF IX:
STORY: It's a tie, they both have wonderful and amazing stories. I do think FFVII's is a little better, but not enough so, to declare a winner.
BATTLE SYSTEM?LEVELING UP: FFIX get's it this time. Not only do you get to have an extra character on your team. But your items are worth more in battle. Plus tents can be used! Which is a good or bad think. For me it's a good. FFIX also has a much better system, then the materia system, which gets to be rather annoying.
CHARACTERS: FFVII wins the race this time, mainly because of the wonderful love triangle of Cloud, Aeris (my favorite FF character ever) and Tifa. FFIX was some great characters as well, but Amarant is probably one of my least favorite characters.

WORLDS: Both have great selections, but FFIX wins this battle. Although FFVII has some great locations, FFIX has even more, mainly because FFVII is only 3 cd's instead of FFIX's four.
MUSIC: It's a tie. Both are Great. (I own both soundtracks)
OVERALL GAMEPLAY: FFIX has a slower start but I would say it beats out FFVII. I love FFVII don't get me wrong, but there are some times (Mostly on the 2nd cd) that I don't really care for) Plus when I first replayed the games, FFIX seemed newer and because there's so much to it, it felt like I was playing some parts for the first time.
WINNER: FF7. They're both wonderful! But there is just something special about 7.

FFVIII vs. FFIX:
STORY: FFIX, I may be one of the few people who really liked FFVIII, but I'll admit, the story is hard to follow(on 3rd cd) and it drags in some spots. FFIX has a story that only improves over time.
BATTLE SYSTEM/LEVELING UP: When it comes to leveling up, FFVIII and FFIX tie. I no many people think it's annoying and diffcult, but I like the junction system from 8, it allows your characters to do anything. However, IX's is much easyer. Altough it doesn't allow your characters to do everything, it's still great. For battle FFIX all the way.
CHARACTERS: It goes to FFIX, like I said, I love FF8, but some of those characters don't develop. By the end of 9 each character has changed in one way or another.
WORLDS: Once again, FFIX wins. It has much more to offer, and most of the towns are nicer.

MUSIC: It's a tough one, but FFVIII wins (sorry), even though it took me a little time to get into FFIX's music, I ended up loving it. But 8 had some wondeful tunes. Even though I gave top honors to 8, 'Melodies of Life' is better then 'Eyes on Me'. (Once again I own all these soundtracks, and listen to each a lot)
OVERALL GAMEPLAY: 9 wins, once again. Same reason's as before. (Note:FF8 does have 4 cd's unlike 7)
WINNER: FFIX, but not by too much.

As for FFX, I'm not really sure, but here it goes.

FFIX vs. FFX
STORY: Tie. both have great stories that get you involed.
BATTLE SYSTEM/LEVELING UP: Battle system goes to X, getting to use all characters is great. As for level up's it's a tie. Both share pro's and con's.
CHARACTERS: I have to give this one to FFIX. Although I really like the characters in X, IX's are better in battle, (there able to do a little of everything, even Garnet, (unlike Yuna and Lulu from X who can't do real attacks)
WORLDS: It upsets me that FFX does not have a world map. But it is a tie.
MUSIC: Tie. I can't desided. Although 'You're Not Alone' from 9 is one of my fav's.
OVERALL GAMEPLAY: Both are excellent!
WINNER: I have no clue. I love them both.

As a huge FF fan I love each of these games, (along with most of the earlier ones, but FFIX is one of my favorites that is timeless. It has wonderful graphic's, incredible FMV's and a beautiful story. If you don't own it, I would suggest you buy it. If you do own it, but don't own some of the other's you may want to look into those.

NOTE: FFIX is more like the original FF's, which I didn't compare it to. FF's VII-X have a more industrial feeling to them, and are very different.

NOTE: I did not compare graphic's, ending's or FMV's, because the graphic's change depending on when the game came out(same as FMV's), and the ending of a game, really depends on what your looking for. Each one was so different it's hard to judge.
