Yes, the Sims can be pretty addictive. You're trapped in suburbia, with all the daily concerns that go with that: you have to remember to take the trash out, go to work, clear up, take a shower, network with the neighbours, and pee. It's impossible, once you've created these people, not to mind what happens to them -- I felt pretty awful when they threatened to take my Sims baby into care. But on another level, it all seems deeply trivial. In that sense, it's like the worst of real life -- not really what I want from a fantasy game. I like games which have a bit of glamour, and which offer me the chance of something I don't have in real life -- like World Domination, for instance. I'm also too ambitious for the purposelessness of the Sims: I want to be able to make progress and eventually win -- there's no such thing as winning in this game. If the idea of controlling people on the most microscopic level is enough for you, you may find the Sims fun. If you want to control people, but you also want to dream of a different kind of life, and if you're interested in politics and town planning as well as the domestic/suburban idyll, you're better off with Age of Empires, Caesar III (if only they made Caesar IV), Tropico, or Civilization.

Wow I was expecting to love this. Unfortunatly that didn't last long. The problem is that there isn't enough time in the Sim's day
to do everything they need too. To keep my Sims going to work and paying the bills they got behind on socializing and got so
depressed that they wouldn't answer the door when a visitor came over.
The real problem is that if left alone they would never do anything that they needed to (like work), so you can't leave the game
going overnight unattended - like other Maxis games.

This game has been a hit seller with the PC and it is a truely fun game for all ages. Ive been playing the PC version and there are a lot of fan sites/third party sites where you can download new clothing for your sims, new furniture, new floors and wall paper designs all created by people and third parties. Its amazing what people can come up with! The only downside to this Mac version is that all these things you can download for your game, are only available for the PC version. I tried downloading some on my iMac, but they are simply PC files and will not work with the Mac version. Because of this you are stuck with the clothes and floors that come with the game. Im not saying there is anything wrong with the games included furniture, clothes and wallpaper, its just that you could expand the games possibilities more with these downloads. Even the "official" downloadable objects from Maxis are not even available yet. Maxis and Aspyr are currently working on this.
So this is not to stop you from buying the game, it is just to inform you that the Mac version of the Sims may not be as expandible as the PC version.

Yes, this game is wonderful to look at, and the music and voices (and, in fact, all of the little things) are funny and imaginative. I was swept away when I first viewed the game. Still, I must say that I have been bored, bored, bored by the tedia surrounding my Sims' lives. Sure, blame it on me. Maybe I could do more to get my favorite Sim, Winkie Waddle, into situations and relationships that would lift his spirits more. But when you look at the boundaries this game puts on Sim lives, it starts to look like SimPenitentiary. Paying bills, taking out garbage, peeing, etc. are funny extras the first couple times you play. But aside from BUYING THINGS and REARRANGING THINGS, there's nothing else to do here. Unfortunately, the game reinforces the empty consumerism at the heart of our culture. So much so, that when Winkie finally finds some solace playing games on his computer, I'm creepily awakened to my own isolation. Too often, the game provides eerie echoes of the dullest parts of my own life. Fascinating in its simulacral detail? Yes. Fun to play? I'm not so sure.

Let me start off by saying that this is the most unique game I have ever played! I never had so much fun just living life before. Thats basically what you do- live your life. You control all the sims that are in your household and you command them to do stuff [Eat, Go to bathroom, swim in pool, etc.]. You can buy new items from your house when your SIms start making money, and you can also expand your house [add a second floor]. How do you make money? Get a job! You can work as a Doctor, Entertainer, Stunt Performer, and a few more. Different jobs have different shifts, salaries, and promotions. To get a promations, certain standards are needed. If you are a waiter or waitress, you must reed up on cooking to get a promotion. Very Realistic!
So why did I only rate 3 Stars...Well after a while the game gets boring. The first month you'll love the game, by the end of the second month you will forget about it. There are so little items, carrers to choose from in this version of the sims...An expansion pack is desperately needed. THey make the game A LOT more fun. So if you are thinking about getting into the Sims series, buy an exapnsion along with the regular version of the sims...trust me!
More time setting up than playing

DISCLAIMER!! I got The Sims as a gift from my wish list so I have no one to blame but myself!!
I have played most of the Sim series with SimCity2000 reduceing my college GPA by at least .5 so I was looking forward to playing The Sims. I have an older Mac (7600 upgraded to a G3 266)but with upgrades I have been able to be reasonably current. Until now. Despite what the box says, The Sims is NOT playable on anything less than a 400mhz G3 with AT LEAST 128MB of RAM. I have 80MB of RAM (far more than the 64MB the box says is required) and with my "gaming" extension set I get 64MB of free ram at startup. No dice. I had to set Virtual Memory at 128MB just to get The Sims to boot. Some other recomendations - Dont try to play this on a 15" monitor. Just not enought screen realestate. Given that every iMac has a 15", that is not good. For older iMac owners with 4MB or less of VRAM, good luck! With an 8MB 2D card and a 4MB Voodoo card I did ok but scrolling was still jerky (maybe with a faster processor and more real RAM you could get by with less of a video card).
On the plus side the downloads available from the web site are top rate. Excellent support....
As for the game, I didnt pass my 15 minute test. After 15 minutes I was thinking about booting up Age of Empires for a good thrashing of the Greeks. With a small screen it is too hard to see everything unless you zoom out and then you mis the details. With time I know I will enjoy this game but there is a little too much "real time" - sitting waiting for something to happen.
I will hold final judgement for The Sims until I can install it on a machine that is faster and has a bigger screen. I dont mind finding a game that is too much for my machine to handle....
2 1/2 years later - I never did get to like the game but my daughter discoverd it sitting in a case and asked me to install it in my 17" iMac G4. She loves it and so does my wife. They both play constantly so I guess the problem is me not the game.
Still a resource hog. The game is VERY picky about the order that expansion packs are installed. Follow the directions sompletely and do a repair permissions before and after each expansion install. Aspyr barely provides supprt. On the positive side, 100% of the downloaded objects that are listed as PC only have worked on my Mac version.
Wonderful and addicting

Have you ever wanted to play God and control people? Now you can.
The Sims is an amazing game. In this game, you play God and control your sims to help them advance and have a dream life, or maybe just the opposite.. You decide! It's extremely entertaining to get your sims to have fun, eat, sleep, go to work, be READY for work, get promotions, get married, move, and socialize. The games ability to add in events(burglars, weddings, military school ect) makes sure that it doesn't get too boring.
I remember when I discovered the game.. My brother's friend lent it to him for his PC and I was lucky enough to play it. Well he had to give it back, but I finally bought a mac version on eBay! Can't wait to start playing again.
