Great game for the price

I've never been much of a Mortal Kombat follower, but when I heard that this game would feature all the MK characters, I decided to jump on it (the $20 price tag helped also). I'm glad I did. This game features a fun arcade mode with various levels of difficulty. A rather decent adventure type mode for a fighter game (Personally, I find it much better than Devil Within on Tekken 5. This reminds me more of a scaled-down Shaolin Monks). And the useless Motor Kombat mode. the Kreate a fighter mode is pretty in depth and contains lots of goodies to make for your own MK Kcreation. Unlockables? Check. I believe I counted 320 different costumes, pictures, artwork, videos, etc. in the Krypt. Overall, the game is by far not the best fighter on the PS2, and it has it's flaws in the combat sometimes with some moves seeming to just not work all the time and the timing being *different* making the game seem sluggish. However, especially for the $20 price tag it was a very worthy buy.

This game is awesome. I never get tired of it. And I like the new Motorkombat and Create-a-Fighter, plus the Create-A-Fatality. The opening is pretty cool too. The only part I don't like about the opening is at the beginning A Buzzard is eating one of the guards, but the rest of opening is entertaining.

Its pretty sweet. Like and dislike the new fatality system. Miss the uniqueness of individuality in the fatality's. Other then that it is pretty sweet.

pros: EVERYONE showed up it seems as there are over 50 characters to use. game looks and sounds great, plus a fun racing game for distraction purposes. konquest mode similar to Deception.

cons: only one hand fighting style per character. fatality feature is ruined by a bizarre and stupid game wide method to achieve it, rather than a specific move for each character.

overall still a great game.

the game it's so fun, but i think there are so much things left in this one that you can find in older versions, but me and my buddies have had very good times playing it

I'm a big fan of the Mortal Kombat series. I've been playing them for a long time. This one was alright, but not the greatest. I personally preferred Deception over Armageddon. Konquest mode was tedious and not all that fun. It seemed to have a lot of mini objectives that took a while to complete, but the whole thing seemed very short. And Arcade mode, well it wasn't very challenging and it seemed as though it was very short. It only takes beating a few characters to get to Blaze, and once that's done (and you will take you 3 tries at the most to beat him) there's really nothing left to do. The Krypt is very limited, I preferred Deception's Krypt. The Motor Kombat, now that is fun. That is 3 of the 4 stars in my opinion. It's cute, and fun, and it does take a while to get tired of it. But once you get tired of it, that's pretty much the end of it. So the bottom line is, they could've done better and once the initial fun ends, it's over and done.

I have always been a fan of the mortal kombat games, but I hadn't played any of the new ones. I was very happy with this purchase. I love my new game.

Who Will Prevail?

Graphics:

3D renders from the previous two Mortal Kombat games plus new models created for the newer characters. The characters move smoothly and animate well. Details such as characters' hair blowing in the wind, the bruises, lacerations, and disfiguration of the faces, and "bounciness" are a nice touch. Specific characters have details about them as well--Kano and the metal eye plate that glows, Cyrax's and Hsu Hao's accessories light up during matches, and Chameleon's ever-changing color scheme are a few.

The characters do have a plastic look; however, the collision of flying through solid objects, being struck by a blow, or being struck by a blunt object quickly reminds you that a lot of the characters are flesh and bones. The weapons a character arm his/herself with have very unique and realistic appearances and even give off sparks when having collided with another weapon.

Konquest mode has very nice (yet limited) settings that is fitting. The locales have enough detail to make you feel like you are in a Mortal Kombat adventure.

The stages are rendered very nicely and range from Acid Pits to Barren Wastelands. The stages have enough detail (and traps) to keep you entertained as much as the fight itself. SOME of the stage traps were very creative and are actually quite humorous.

Sounds:

Groans, grunts, screams and moans from the previous two Mortal Kombat games. The sound effects are just as cool before ranging from the breaking noise accompanied by a character landing on his/her head to the metallic clangs of the weapons stiking one another. A lot of the characters retain sound effects accompanied by their special moves from previous installments of Mortal Kombat: Kitana and her Fan Lift, Mileena and her Sai Throw, and Sindel and her Wave Scream are a few. The punch, kick, weapon,and collision sound effects are what you would expect and you remember from the previous two installments of Mortal Kombat and they work very well. The only character specific voices in the entire game are Scorpion with his classic "get over here" phrase and Lui Kang's high pitched yells and calls.

Story:

Mortal Kombat's storyline has always said one thing, but something different happens in the next. You never know what the story for a particular character is until the sequel. While this installment of Mortal Kombat is a cool game, the story is so mind-boggling that its hard to piece together what's going on. Some characters in this game have a huge storyline (the two new characters Daegon and Taven) while some of the previous characters have little to no stories or endings in this title (Jade, Kitana, Sonya) leaving others with unfitting, unsettling or dissatisfying endings (Kano, Jax).

The overall story involving all 64 characters is a pretty cool occurrence non-the-less as it appears to be what the game's title suggests--Armageddon. Furthermore, a lot of the characters may have the same alliance, yet, still turn on one another--always a cool plot twist.

Konquest's story does directly link to the main game. The two main characters of this particular mode embark on an adventure (as Shujinko did in Deception) as opposed to just going through a warrior ladder.

Gameplay:

Hearing numerous complaints, you just have to play the game with an open-mind. It plays similar to some other 3D fighters; however, combos do not vary by much--hence dial-a-combo. Your character has a set of two fighing styles that can be switched between at will--their hand to hand combat fighting style and their weapon of choice. Some characters only have one fighting style--some of the bosses. Armageddon brought back air combos. After using a pop-up technique, the fighter can meet their stunned opponent in the air and continue their brutal onslaught.

Every character has his/her/its unique special moves. Some prove to be more useful and some don't. At times it isn't even necessary to use specials as the hand to hand combat seems to work just fine.

Create a Fatality

The fatality system has changed dramatically. Now characters are assigned to a create-a-fatality system. A series of commands are to be entered after the "Finish Him/Her" command. It is cool; however, a lot of characters are generally doing the same thing and it appears as if every character has a generic way of brutalizing their opponent (considering every character had their own unique finishers in the previous installments).

Konquest

Konquest mode plays a lot like a brawler or beat em up title; however, you do enter the arcade mode style of fighting when playing against one of the characters from the character roster. It is very responsive and characters are very responsive. At points you can use weapons and special attacks that turns your character into a savage and relentless brute making for easy one hit kills within a set period of time. There are obtainable hidden items scattered throughout the locations to hunt for. A reward is issued of you are able to retrieve all of these items (the same reward is issued by other means as well). The locations are filled with traps that require the player to take a strategic approach at times. It can be frustrating, but a few tries is all you need.

Kreate a Kharacter

There is a create-a-fighter system that has accessories galore. You can create the unlikiest of characters complete with their own fighting style and special moves. You can even tinker with details such as facial features--size of the nose, eyes, jaw, mouth, etc. You're likely to spend more time creating a character than actually using them...

The Final Ruling:

The game is a pretty good one. For starters, you have over 60 characters to choose from each with their own fighting style and weapon, plenty of unlockables, and a story mode that fleshes out the backstory of the two newly introduced warriors. I recommend this game more or less to Mortal Kombat fans and fighting game enthusiasts.

First of all I haven't played any MK games since MK3 for SNES, so I thought that I would give this one a try because it had all the characters. It is very cool that it has ALL the chracters from the franchise. I was disappointed that it didn't have individual fatalities for each character, because that was one of the big draws to the old games.

The game seems decent, but if you are a fan of the older games like MK2 and MK3 then this is a completly different game in that respect.
