Ok, so without question the biggest upside to this game is the huge character selecton. Especially if you have someone to play against it can be hours of fun. There were however, a few changes that I didn't like. To start, the create a fighter mode had promise, but you can only have one custom fighter per profile, meaning you have to erase your fighter to make a new one, or create way too many profiles. And of course, the create a fatality system. When I heard of this, I thought it went along with the create a fighter mode. But no, this applies to all the fighters. Fatalities have always been the trademark or mortal kombat, and after all these years to "try something new" was a huge mistake. Over all, just playing the versus mode with a friend still rocks, so the game gets my thumbs up.

The Final Mortal Kombat game is one of the best games on PS2/Xbox

First of all I will say that this is really the final MK game that will ever be made (unless they make a new one, but even then will it have entirely new characters and all of that). Every character in the MK series is in this game (Mokap, Styker, Motaro and even Meat from MK4 and Chameleon from the PSone version of MK Trilogy), which makes it great to have battles that we never got to see before. The Collector's edition has an extra DVD with is and (I don't know if the regular edition has it) the arcade version of UMK3. The only thing that does disappoint me is the fatality system. It's a good idea but it would be better if you had a choice of doing that or see a cinamatic fatality (which this game could of been on a dual layered DVD). thank goodness that the Konquest mode is a whole lot better than the Deception Konquest mode, which wasn't great. Overall, this game is a must have in your PS2 collection (I mean for MK fans).

Good, but not the best...

The first thing I noticed about Amageddon is that there is only two styles this time around, and the game revolves around the air combat and juggles. Personally I like the air combat, but they should have kept the three styles as well. It makes the characters kind of feel unfinished, and like theres something missing from them. I also have no idea why they implemented this new fatality sytem, its entertaining, but they should of had it as a option along side the character specific fatalities. The fatalities gave the character a sense of identity which is now lacking. Also the story line makes little to no sense at all, its completely random compared to the old ones which flowed into each other nicely. So far what I've seen from the endings I haven't liked to much. There is also a lot of postitives however, the kreate a character is fun and a great addition to the game. Motor Kombat is a fun mini game, and it's great to have UMK3 again. I think the game will appeal more to casual gamers this time around because of the more simplistic fighting system, and hardcore MK fans will enjoy it as well. Despite all my complaints the game still is fun and being able to select so many characters is awsome. It's a fun game, but it's a shame they messed with the fatalities.. I can't even believe they would do that. On top of the fact the fighting system is cut short. Those are two MAJOR detractors from what would other wise be the best MK ever. I reccomend it, just try and look past the negatives.

Could be better

As mentioned by others, the fatalities are all the same for each character. Also absent are character biographies, which are some of my favorite parts, since the series has a rich mythology. Some characters haven't been seen for over a decade, it would be nice to know what they've been doing. At least the endings give some backstory to the characters.
Konquest is kind of short, but still satisfying. I liked the reference to MK Mythologies with the 3 female assassins. It can be difficult however to have to find relics while being attacked. Arcade mode is good, as you get koins for combos, flawless victories, etc. Motor Kombat was a waste of time, they should have sacrificed it for more character depth.
From some of the endings, it is obvious that some characters won't return in future MK games. I only hope they include minor charcters from previous games in future games, such as Tasia, Tremor, No Face, Hornbuckle, and Belokk.

I picked the Premium Edition of Armegeddon (though I am disappointed with how Midway distributed them the one exclusive to Gamestop was the one I wanted, but I wont get it because of there pre-order policy, but whatever) and I have to say it's really great for huge fans of the characters. You get everyone, but the problem is a lot of the newer guys SUCK. The biggest problem with Deception was its lack of good characters, but besides that it was a perfect game.

Konquest mode this time around took a beating, although the fact that you get to fight while walking around (in addition to fighting one-on-one) is cool. The problems I found were its rather short and linear. The story is cool and I like the cut-scenes, but it just is NOT the same as the well done Konquest mode in Deception.

Now, to the actual fighting one-on-one, you will notice some characters moves are missing also the character specific fatalities are gone. Now you have a certain number combo fatality that you control. I thought that it is really funny how even though 60 something characters are available only about 40 are ever really used some are incredibly dumb, especially Mokap, who I know is a joke but he is still ridiculous. I LOVE some of the remade characters especially Stryker. Kreate A Fighter is very cool BUT they ruined it when they only allowed one per profile, absolutely stupid! Since everything is locked in kreate it can be a real chore to make different fighters.

The extras this time around are really cool, Ultimate mk3 (for premium edition owners) and Motor Kombat (which could have used some polish but still fun). The krypt I do not consider extra, because you will have almost everything by just playing Konquest. There is nothing to special in there anyway except alternate costumes.

Overall if you like MK you should love this game. It has its bugs and you will see nothing in it is perfect. It is still worth every penny to me.

Sometimes pretty graphics are really what a fighting game needs to be better than the competition. This game is an example of that.

While it's not the best game in the Mortal Kombat series, the fact that you are given a create-a-fatality option really gives the series some new life. The graphics are phenomenal in every aspect.

I love the way the fighting works. This series has been steadily improving since the late 90's. I'm glad to see another good Mortal Kombat game on the market.

Not so good, not so bad

PROS:
- Konquest, aside from the very annoying traps and the very linear plot, I'd say that this is the best adventure mode in any fighting game so far because the 3d fighting against multiple opponents is really fun, much better than devil within from tekken, I'd say it's the only aspect in which mortal kombat is superior to Soul Calibur.
- The large quantity of fighters available. Of course not all of them are worthy to be included, only for completists.
- Two fighting disciplines for each fighter, the 2 are available during the encounter. It's no big deal that in Deception and Deadly alliance 3 disciplines were available, I prefer more fighters with more moves, and I hate the discipline mixing kombos.
- The large quantity of moves in each discipline for each fighter.
- The crypt is friendlier than before, only one kurrency and the game tells the content of each space before you buy it, so you can decide, you save the time of searching the contents-list on the web.
- Motor Kombat, a racing game mode, looks silly; I haven't played it, yet.
- You can set the difficulty. If you are a casual gamer, then this is a huge plus, the easy level is really easy.
- The blood level is adjustable, this is unimportant to me.

CONS:
- The Kreate a fighter is a disappointment. Only one custom fighter per profile.
- The graphics are mediocre. Especially the hair of the kreate a fighter.
- Aside from the alternate costumes, the contents of the krypt are not so good.
- The ending for each fighter doesn't even include exclusive artwork, it consists only in the fighter executing a kata and a narrator reading the history, so it is very forgettable.
- I think that most of the costumes, even the alternates are the exact same from mk deception and deadly alliance.
- Konquest plot, similarly to deception, you play as a new and unknown fighter. It would be much more interesting a konquest history about Scorpion or Kitana or Kenshi or Sektor or Jade or Reptile or Shang Tsung or at least Kira or any of the more popular characters.

I just want to say that giving this game three stars out of spite is stupid. Yeah they tried something new with the fatalities and it has its ups and downs but it makes it a lot easier to bust them and there are a lot of options to do. But his other complaint about the ending was stupid. In deception when you beat the game all you saw were pictures that were presented comic book style which was so boring, this one isnt much better but is no way worse than the others. With that being said I will give my thoughts. I personally think this is the best one to date. It brings back virtually every character ever made in the game. Even the secret ones like chameleon, rain, and noob saibot which you can use by himself and not have to team him up with smoke like in deception. It also comes with part 3 with the original graphics and movments which is fun to reflect on how far the game has come. As well as some bonus games like a mario kart style racing game this is fun and funny to watch. But with the insane selection of characters and the option to do air combos and the huge improvement in konquest mode this game is untouchable. It would definitley have been cool to also have original fatalities per player but besides that this is probly the best fighting game to date.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon.......

Introduced to Mortal Kombat with Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and having played all the games in the franchise(including MK Mythologies:Sub-Zero and MK Special Forces); I've seen the series have its' ups and downs. Like every franchise that has spawned many sequels, there've been moments of greatness and moments when you're left thinking "What were they thinking?". While Mortal Kombat Armageddon won't leave thinking the latter, Armageddon isn't a moment of greatness either. With a roster of over 58 characters as well as a good number of fighting arenas spanning the entire Mortal Kombat history- think of Armageddon as a 'Best-of' if you will or, at the very least, a second Mortal Kombat Trilogy as pointed out by another reviewer. I'll admit; it's good to see some of my old favorite like Rain-Ermac-Fujin-Smoke and being able to play them in the Deadly Alliance/Deception vein. That, first and foremost, was worth plunking down the asking price for the game. That and the new stuff included in the game such as Motor Kombat, the kreate-a-fighter/kreate-a-fatality modes and the revamped Mortal Kombat Konquest mode(done quite like Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks). Yet, what chaps my hide is the fact that Boon and company decided to recycle alot of the animations from previous games and put them in this game. Come on, if you're going to give us a 'Best-of' game of sorts...give us some new animations to look at during the match, for chrissakes. Instead of seeing Scorpion spear the camera and pull it to him for the umpteenth time, you know?? Too, Wassup with this Kata thing at the end of the Kombat mode?? If you can look pass it's faults, though, Mortal Kombat Armageddon is a good game to end the series on the current-generation consoles with.

After seeing screenshots of several next-generation games, I'm anxious to see what direction Midway takes with the next Mortal Kombat game. Hopefully, it will be a more realistic approach. It would also be nice to see them take the Mortal Kombat mythos into new genres(MMORPG?).

Sweeeet Game....

You get ALLLL the characters and an extra 1 or 2 special moves per character than what people are used to seeing... However, it lacks in fatalities as mentioned by others... The motor kombat is fun... but it needs more maps... Hopefully the next version can cram everything we want on one disc...
