Sorry, but this game was not any fun at all. I bought this game because of the previews and all the hype, thinking it was going to be incredible. I played it once for about 30 minutes, was so completely bored out of my mind, I shut it off. About two weeks later, I played it again...hoping that my last try was just because I wasn't in the mood for it. This time I played again for about an hour..... I traded it in for Jax and Daxter the next day.....at least I learned a good lesson from it -- don't buy it, unless I know I like it --
What a waste, the only reason it's getting 2 stars instead of 1 from me, is because of the graphics. It looks awesome, it just plays like crap. Apologies to the die-hard gamers out there, I just couldn't stand it.
DOESNT SEEM LIKE A MGS GAME

the whiny new character Raiden makes this seem like not a MGS game at all. how could they replace the character Solid Snake who every1 liked so much with a sleezy rookie? its just wrong. after all Solid Snake is one of the things that made MGS so great. by changing the main character its a totaly different expierience.(in this case worse) Solid Snake had attitude, he was cool and didnt rely on anybody else. and the new villians r also just awful.it seems like the develeper dudes have run out of ideas. the vilians play almost no part in the story at all. its like they just stuck them in to make the game a bit longer. in MGS 1 each villian stood for something and here theyr just empty stuid characters with no attidudes. theyr ike mindless robots.(not that theyr robots) (. . .)THIS GAME COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT. BUT I THINK ITS A TOTAL FAILURE
Good Game

As usual, the boss fights are too hard at the end, but there is a new twist. A really [poor] plot. Instead of the usual "fight to save the world from bad guys", there are what seem like hours of cinemas explaining all kinds of twists and plots, subplots, and even side plots.
I don't want to give away the game, but the story really gets in the way of what could be a lot of fun.
Bottom Line: If you like playing through the boss fights a couple of dozen times before winning, and like plots that are more confusing than the X-Files used to be(and make no sense besides), you'll like MGS2.
Diz game da [best]!...

Metal gear solid 2: sons of liberty is one of the best games on the ps2 as of the 2002 holiday season. It's been out for a while,
but it's still alive and kicking. One thing that I personally appreciate more than the other reviewers are the cut scenes. sure, they're long sometimes, but its like your playing a movie.the intricate storyline is almost like someting out of a tom clancy book. Many people complained that snake was only available to use fr abut half an hour. For me this wasn;t a problem since i never played the original metal gear solid and couldn't attach to him, put it really makes no difference. The graphics and sound easily compete with and in many cases outdo tose o xbox or gamecube. the detail is amazing. the only other ps2 game that could compete with the graphics might be final fntasy 10. The gameplay is amazing. snake/raiden can hang from railings, kneel, crawl, jump, and shimmy against a wall all extemely realisticly. Enemy A.I. is amazing! guards can find the bodies of their comrades and call in for backup, spot you with a camera, call in your exact position to their commanders, raise their handsin cowardice wen you come up behind them, and you may even encouter one sitting down, bobbing his head and tapping his foot as he listens to a walkman with headphones. the first person view is great. it allows for precision shooting, to take out a bomb fuse, for instance. The replay value is also great. You can unlock all kinds of cheats if you go back and kill all the guards and then take their dogtags by dragging them around.(you might also have to hide bodies like this)Great graphics, gameplay, replay, intricacy/storyline, and price! 20 bucks! buy IT! I promise you won;t be dissapointed!

If you are like others, then when you are getting a video game, you actually want to play it, not watch it. So that's why this "video game" cannot be classified as one. You are going to be watching the cutscenes for the most part in Metal Gear Solid 2, so don't expect to experience any intensity or adrenaline while you "play" this game. The gameplay itself isn't that great to hide that flaw. While the graphics are very good(I have seen a lot better visuals in other action games), it is not a lot of fun to watch a movie made with an in-game engine, where the developers include a gimmick that allows you to rotate the camera and zoom in while you watch.
Overall, MGS2 is a lack-of-gameplay kind of game. Sure, the graphics are nice when you have those tight little rooms to play in, that is why Konami could raise the bar in the graphics, because there are no wide-open spaces that could limit the quality of the graphics. Places where the game is set has a very "locked" feel to it, with small rooms, tight corridors, and very limited outdoor environments. There is a lot of detail though: high quality weather effects, nice facial expressions, rain bouncing off the barrel of your firearm, fluid and smooth animation, real-looking smoke, fire,....nothing that you would not find in other games of 2001, there is nothing special in MGS2. The audio on the other hand is pretty much like the first Metal Gear - the audio is great, the voice acting is superb, and the sound is very well done, unlike in other games that have good graphics but lack good sound (it is very common these days), Metal Gear Solid 2 is an exception, with outstanding sound, voice-acting, and soundtrack.
The actual gameplay is based on stealth. The AI in the game is smart and the enemies will not shoot you as soon as they see you, unlike in other games they will try to avoid shooting you upon the encounter unless they really need to, it is the same thing the cops would do to the bad guy if there is no threat of them being killed. They will try to disarm you and knock you out, and that kind of stuff - all of it is pretty cool. The interaction between Snake and the NPCs (non-player characters) is astounding. Snake can sneeze all of a sudden and give himself up or if he is careless, guards can locate him by following his footprints. He also can distract guards in all kinds of ways, for example, he can drop something on the floor when nobody is watching, wait for a quard to come by, this item will draw the quard's attention and eventually will lead him to either being killed or incapacitated. Snake can also hide the bodies of the fallen enemies from other guards so they will not become alert. This is what you will see in Hitman.
In Conclusion, MGS2 is not for a hardcore gamer. The part where you play the game is short, the story is easy to get lost in, and guards will come back to life - very annoying, and the fact that the best cover is a cardboard box is pathetic. The main weakness (to most people, but some think it is a strong point) is that a big portion of the game is cutscenes and an overwhelming and extremely complex story. On the plus side you have those "brilliant","gorgeous","breathtaking", or whatever-you-call-it graphics, which are no big deal to me. What also is great? - gotta be the sound. What I would say? - if you like stealth so much, get this game, if you are a big fan of Solid Snake/Metal Gear, you probably already have it, some of you are dissapointed, some of you are glad the way this game was done, but for me, a true video game enthusiast, this game is no biggie, could have been a whole lot better if it was more like the first one.
Not for everyone

Anyone looking for quick action will be disappointed. While the graphics of MGS2 is good, the story is too twisted to be enjoyable, and there is little gratifying action. Instead you spend most of your time searching and watching. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I found MGS2 a huge letdown. Verdict: save your money.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

I've actually played this game! What an amazing concept! Unlike every single other person who has posted - they've only played the demo - that makes all the difference in the world...
I agree that the Metal Gear series in one of my favorites - but this time I was severly disappointed.
Problems with the game:
Cut scenes - I would say that this game is probably 50% cut scenes. Whereas the last game might have been a 20%. You really tend to notice after about 10 mintues that you're still watching just one cut scene - and not playing. It gets extremely annoying after awhile. While the graphics are very cool, the length is somewhat annoying.
Game Length - As I said, the cutscenes were about 50% of the entire game - the rest of the game, hardly any game what-so-ever. I would say after about 3 hours of playing, I was about 80% done with the game. I would say I was done in less then 5 hours. If you've played the demo - the demo probably took like 30min-1hr to beat - that was 1/4th of the game - seriously.
Stories - After you beat the first half of the game (which took me like an hour), you completely stop the storyline, and pick up with a brand new one, playing some lame character that Konami apparently envisioned taking Metal Gear's torch onto further games. Not only are you not playing Solid Snake (annoying to those of us who have played the series), the story completely stops, and makes no explanation as to what happened with the first half of the series. The entire Metal Gear plotline is thrown out the window, and it turns into just some game with bad guys and hostages...
Characters - Metal Gear Solid 2 - no character background, development, etc. With all these cutscenes, we have nothing to go on - not for the heroes, those people on the communicator, or the evil bosses. The Metal Gear series had great character development - this one (num. 2), nothing. There are problems with the second guy and this girl on the communicator - the explanation for it - lame.
My advice - rent this game. You should be able to beat it quite easily within whatever 5 day limit you have. As much as I want to see Konami make more MGS games, Just rent, not buy. Cutscenes took up far too much time, leaving little gameplay.
