I apologize for the length of this review. I want to make sure everyone who purchases this game knows what they are in for ahead of time. Skip to the end for an abbreviated opinion of the disappointment that was MGSII.
Let me start by saying the this game looks INCREDIBLE. The much hyped "emotion engine" of the PS2 is put through its paces by the developers at Konami. The characters display differing facial expressions and changes in voice tone in reaction to different events that occur. And the environment is realistic and immersing, from the sun shining on the water to the pictures hung on the inside of locker doors and the boxes of other Konami game titles sitting around (nice touch).
Also well developed for MGSII is the plot line, or lines in this case. There are numerous twists and turns throughout the course of the game, with noone as they seem, everyone with their own hidden agenda, and plenty of fodder for the conspiracy theorist in each of us. All of these suprises and unexpected turns serve to make MGSII an outstaning story, but a much less outstanding GAME.
In order to develop the complicated characters and events in this game, the cutscenes and CODEC conversations are numerous and LONG. More than once I sat with the controller on my lap while watching a cutscene, or series of cutscenes, that lasted 30 minutes, or more in a few cases. But, upon finding myself confused or completely lost after succumbing to my desire to get back to the gameplay and skipping a couple of the early breaks that seemed to stretch on forever, I found it necessary to watch every minute of each of these little "movies" in order to know who was whom and exactly what was going on. And every minute of these cutscenes, by the end of the game, equals HOURS of time not spent playing, just sitting. Not to mention a troubled "relationship" your character seems to be pursuing with your CODEC operative that leads to long, droning CODEC conversations (with not even the distraction of animation, might I add) with whining unmatched by all but the most Fatal Attraction-esque partners. Then there is a development late in the game where a main character, for no apparent reason, takes a very "Heart of Darkness" turn and begins to contact you incessantly at a time when your attention really needs to be directed elsewhere. This ruined the game for me and actually had me considering stopping right there and not even finishing. I went on to finish, out of morbid curiosity, but was even further disillusioned with my gaming experience after that. I WON'T play it again.
In short (too late for that?), if you want a visually stunning game where you will spend most of your time passively enjoying the graphics, rather than playing the game, Metal Gear Solid 2 is your game. If you want a challenging, non-stop action gaming experience, look elsewhere.
One of the finest games ever released!

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is without question, one of the finest games on the market today. It's predecessor, Metal Gear Solid, though a very good game, was not the fantastic achievement that Konami has worked hard to earn. Players assume the role of Solid Snake initially, but change characters several times during the game. While many people find this to be an annoyance, I found it to be a interesting change in the flow of the game. Graphically, the game is beautiful, one of the best out there, save for Final Fantasy X. And though Konami was meticulous in detail, they did a very good job of keeping the "blood n' guts" level down. The Mature rating is not for the gameplay itself (in my opinion) but for the cinema scenes, placed somewhere between a PG-13 and an R rated movie. Fantastically done, they sometimes make you think you're watching a sequel to "The Sixth Day" or "Minority Report"!
The gameplay is very nicely done. The character is mostly seen from a 3rd person perspective, with some switching to 1st person.
The controls are easy and comfortable, allowing you to move the character in almost any real position! The weapons are very diverse, as well as being based off modern guns and then upgraded to fit the future theme. Though great thought and detail has been put into the weapons, this is NOT a Golden-Eye style game where you walk through the levels blowing away anything with two legs. A strong emphasis has been put on the stealth/spy theme of the game, requiring players to disarm traps, disable sensors and cameras, bug rooms, repair vehicles and evade guards rather than get from point A to point B with as much kills possible. Due to the particulary smart AI, staying hidden is usually a smart idea.
With the difficulty set on hard, it will take most players around 20 hours to complete. As for replay value, two or three times will probably be enough to grasp the entire story, which is one of the most complex and well-thought stories in the Playstation 2's career. Voice-acting is superb, which makes it even more enjoyable second time around.
All-in-all, Metal Gear Solid is a wonderful game and a must-have for any PS2 owner.
Overall an excellent game

This really is a great game in many aspects. The graphics, the gameplay, the story line.....all top notch. Easily MGS2 has the best eye candy I have seen for PS2. The visuals are downright stunning at times. The gameplay is vitually the same as MGS (why mess with a perfect system?) The storyline is one of the most original, complex, and well written scripts I have seen on a game.
I only have two problems with this game. First, the animated storyline sometimes drags on too long. There were several instances where I felt I wanted to get on with the game instead of watching a 15 minute (I kid you not) movie. Also, the story line has so many twists and turns you really have to pay attention lest you become lost (an ill timed phone call made me miss a couple minutes of story and left me scratching my head for awhile). Finally, I thought the game itself was too short. I beat it in three days time (this on normal level). I was hoping for a longer game (not as long as say Grand Theft Auto 3 but definitely more than just three days).
Overall, though, and excellent game. It is definitely a must have for PS2 owners. I look forward to the next installment of this great series.
Hmmm... Quite a different experience than i expected.

Unfortunately, when I popped my brand new MGS2 DVD into my PS2, I was excited after watching the intro video. Why do I say unfortunately? Because the intro video was probably the most exciting part of the game. This game was quite a let down after having played Metal Gear Solid. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy playing it, but after only 10 hours of game play, I found myself staring in disbelief as the ending credits rolled onto the screen. The ending left me wanting to know what happens next, but how much of "what next" couldn't be added to this game?
Let me break my dissapointment down into subsections:
1) There was much less game play than that of MGS.
2) There wasn't much change (if any at all) to the gear that you acquire and use throughout this game. A new pistol, some girly mags, and a freeze cannister were about the only notable additions in this department.
3) The plot was a little unbelievable at points, and even verged on inane in some areas.
What I liked:
1) Better graphics and sound
2) A few new moves (ie being able to hang from ledges or do pull-ups, and the ability to hide enemy bodies in lockers etc.)
3) Girly posters hidden throughout the playing field.
Overall, I expected more from this game. It had potential, but in the end was nothing more than a graphically enhanced version of the original.
Big disappointment from a Veteran Metal Gear Fan

I have all the Metal Gear games starting from the original for Nintendo. Hope this review helps.
Here is a top 11 reasons why this is a major disappointment::
1) Only five big bosses to kill
Olga, Fatman, Vamp, 5 Metal Gears and Solidous Snake
2) The DVD movie clips are longer than the playing time
3) You do not need to use all your weapons
4) The story gets complex if u never followed the Metal Gear series
5) The story doesnt really have an ending.
6) Running around nude is not what I had in mind when I bought this game (you will see what I mean by this)
7) No tanks to destroy...I miss destroying tanks
8) Over half the building u are in is bombed. You never get to go into the entire complex. Your limited on where to go.
9) You never get to kill Lady Luck
10) Too easy..only took me 15 hours to solve. The game saves your time.
11) No multi-player head to head combat
A lot of hype but only a little game...

I have waited for this game for an extraordinarily long time. I anticipated it would be the best game I had ever played. But I was wrong. The part of the game where you are actually playing is mediocre at best. It never really takes a jump above what the last game was. The graphics are fantastic, but beyond that there are hardly any improvements. The diversity of the missions is mildly entertaining (though boring at times). Also, the storyline leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. In the first MGS there were alot of plot twists and towards the end you made some crazy revelations, as you realized what was actually going on. The difference between MGS and MGS2 is that the storyline in MGS makes sense... In MGS2 they try so hard to duplicate the story of MGS that they go way overboard with all the plot twists and craziness. After it is all over you will most likely be wondering why you bothered playing at all. By the time I reached the end of the game the story had become so convoluted and ridiculous, that I just wanted to get it over with so I could quit playing. Also being forced to sit through cut scenes of conversation lasting upwards of 30 - 40 minutes between sections where you can play for 2 - 3 minutes... The last couple hours of this game are mind numbing, and sitting and watching hours of this horrible story drained my will to live. It might have been bareable, had the story not been so ignorant. I am no stranger to watching long story sequences, as I'm a huge fan of RPG's like Final Fantasy, but this was ridiculous. Before I ever reached the end of the game I knew that if I ever did decide to play through it again, I would have to skip all of the story scenes, lest I be forced to throw my PS2 against the nearest wall.
My recommendation? Don't let anybody who is a suicide risk play this game, it will push them over the edge.
This game is Horrible.

Well, I have recieved this game and beat it within the last day. This game is probably one of the BEST PS2 games released (and may be the PS2 game EVER). The game has some flaws, (not a spolier) #1 The truth is, and I think you deserve to know, Snake doesn't play a major role in the game, you'll find out why when you play the game :). #2 theres around 6-7 hours of gameplay and around 7 hours of talking on the CODEC or Cut scenes. It doesn't really bother me, but it may bother some people.
But the postive things about this game overcome every negative: The camera angels are great, The soundtrack is awesome, which was written by Harry Gregson Williams (enemy of the state, The Rock), The Voice overs, which were done by the same group as the first MGS. The story has has more twists than a twizzler. The attention to detail is amazing, you want to shoot that pan? or shoot that light out? go right ahead. The enemy's AI is super smart, preforming almost real life combat procedures. The new weapons, which include a M9 tranquilizer, RBG6 grenade launcher, M4 machine gun, USP, AK-74u, etc.
Thats all I'm going to tell you, since I don't want to spoil your game time (. . .)
Make Metal Gear Solid 2 a part of your PS2 library now!

Just like any wise gamer, I never buy games without reading reviews from reputable gaming resources. I have never played the first couple of installments of Metal Gear Solid, but figured I'd find out what the hype surrounding MGS2 was about; and upon completing the game, I was not surprised by the rave reviews.
Excellent graphics, sound, and a complicated storyline immerse you into the game. This is not Resident Evil - no monsters, ghouls, zombies or supernatural beings. It's an action-packed technological-thriller, complete with awesome weapons, espionage tactics, and extreme attention to environmental detail. Similar to Devil May Cry, it's a visual feast, and a lot more. Control of your character is flawless, and getting used to the analog controls was really easy. Crawling, hanging, running, drawing, aiming and firing weapons was also easy and almost second nature.
My favorite part of the game was providing sniper cover for Emma, a young girl who is key to the game's ending, as she crosses the pontoon bridges between the structures of a deep sea facility. Don your thermal goggles, arm your PSG-1 sniping rifle, and take position to blast some Claymore mines planted in Emma's path before she steps on them. As you struggle to place the mines (and enemy soldiers who try to take out Emma) within your crosshairs, down some Pentazamine pills to steady your aim. This was an awesome segment that begged for replay after replay. :) If there is one thing notable about this game, it would be how painstakingly detailed the environments are rendered, and yet how interactive they are to your actions.
In short, the gameplay is extraordinary, unlike any game I've ever played. The complex storyline was a bit too much for me, as I have never played the original series, but this didn't, and shouldn't, stop anyone from having a grand old time disposing of the baddies MGS2-style. If the dialogue gets too drawn out, do as I did and just "fast forward" through it. I've played several action games, but this ranks number one in my book so far... My bottom line to all people reading this is - Buy Metal Gear Sold 2: Sons of Liberty ... it's not just a game, it's an experience! -ecr

A worthy Metal Gear title. The story has a lot of twists and turns. You learn a bit more about solid snake and his "buddies". The controls are good and the graphics are nice!

Ok the one on the Playstation, is one of THE BEST GAMES THAT I HAVE EVER PLAYED. It had a great plot, one that beat many good movies, and the Game play is Solid like Snake. YOu focus on stealth and to avoid fighting but sometimes you have to fight, and they are some pretty cool fights, one has you fighting a tank! Another has you runing up up about 20 flights of stairs with a squad of Baddies on your tail armed with fully auto rifles. Nwow on to the second one, it hasen't been released yet but after playing the demo I think it will be great to. The gameplay should be as good if not better than the first. And you can do so much more here, like hiding in lockers or in a dark corner as the gaurds pass. The A.I. is great, if an enemy spots you he'll radio for back up, unless you have shot his radio or if you catch him off gaurd hell give up with his hands in the air, but if you lower your gun he'll fire his. And if he does call for back up the enemy comes in with better wepons body armor, and sometimes even have riot shields, which you bullets can't penetreate. And this is just the demo! The story sound cool but you never can tell if it'll be better than the first.
