Shabby...

Good Qualities
1. The tanker portion. It's fairly well done, the story is plausible, and it's reminiscent of MGS (previous game). I'm not one to hype over graphics, but there are several nice touches such as weather effects.
2. The gameplay is can be awesome at times, sneaking around, holding up guards, tranquilizing, choking, shooting, or throwing them over railings...
3. Guard AI has improved. Upon spotting you, they will radio for help (unless you stop them) and an assault team will stack up and come after you, complete with riot shields and the appropriate weapons..You can hide under tables, boxes, etc..leave magazines lying around to distract them..throw emtpy magazines and knock on walls to get their attention. It's all good stuff and adds immensely to what the first game created.

Shabby Qualities
1. I like cutscenes as much as the next guy and the ones in MGS2 are quite good indeed...but there are a lot..a LOT..and they are looooong. Again, I'm not saying that they are bad..it's just, I want to play!!! The game is constantly being interrupted by cutscenes..and just as they start to fade out, another one comes on...
2. If you thought there were a lot of cutscenes, then the Codec will be a kick in the face. For the uninitiated, the codec is like a radio with a visual image of the person you are talking to. The game uses it to relay info to you...sometimes you are forced to listen (though you may skip through it) and other times listening is optional. The point here is that every several minutes this thing starts beeping and your forced to listen to a long-winded conversation. I guess it seems more realistic that the characters go off on tangents, but when you really only need to know the next objective, all this talk can make you crazy. Codec messages, along with cutscenes, probably rival the amount of actual playing time. The game also waits until the second half of the game (where you switch to another character, a FOXHOUND newbie) to explain how to actually play...so of course you get about nine hundred codec messages telling you about concepts you've already mastered...joy.
3. The story, oh the story..Again, I'm not bashing it or defaming sci-fi ideas or anything like that. The story just starts to get out of control. The tanker portion of the game is fairly tame, except for the ending of it...which leaves you thinking that maybe you were battling the wrong guys...Then, with the second half of the game, things just go crazy..not only do you end up playing as Raiden, the most obnoxious and feminine sounding baby faced excuse for a special operator, but you've got elite seal teams (yes, multiple teams) being shredded to bits by a vampire and shot down by another female mutant queen..and then you find out these weirdo super power misfits are part of some top government team...and they want to blow up this oil rig...but the charges are placed all wrong...and the seals came in with a 60 year old bomb expert walking on a cane..excuse me but ha..ha...ha...and there are more backstabs and plot twists than you know what to do with...and somehow all of it is related to some giant machine that can shoot nukes..sooo incredibly elaborate yet soooo incredibly unbelievably unbelievable and thus highly annoying and stupid.
I know this may sound like a sucker punch to the fans (Im one of them)..but if you want tactical espionage action with a clear cut story without all of the annoying storyline elaborations and such, play Splinter Cell..

great fun game!

The actual PLAYING part of this game was great. The seemingly countless hours of movies were a little more than annoying. The writers, in an attempt to show us how clever they are, slaughtered this game. We all know what happens when you get too much rope........

There needs to be an option for 0 (ZERO) stars.

Basically... This game sucks. The graphics suck, the dialog is boring, this title is overrated. I sold my copy to some idiot on eBay and I get a negative review because it sucks so bad. I rather play with a barbi than play this POS.

Harumph

OK, I like these types of games, but I feel that Metal Gear Solid, and Hitman II were 2 games that didn't live up to all the hype.

However, I have to be fair:
This release of Metal Gear Solid II is a pretty cool game, way better than the previous MGS game, and it offers the player some really cool moves, and cool gameplay...No doubt...but, I would have like to have spent MORE TIME PLAYING the actual game, than watching all the LONG, drawn-out movies throughout the game! It gets old, really fast! Every 3-5 minutes you're watching yet, ANOTHER video clip or movie....JEESH!!!

While not my favorite military-type PS2 game, it's a decent game, fairly cool to play, but doesn't really deserve a 5-Star rating, in my view.

The Best Game ever...

I am a metal gear fan from the first release a long time ago, i have played this game and completed it in about 11 hrs and couple of minutes not the average length i would expect. The graphics is perfect in relation to fight scenes and FMVs. Not that i dont like change but i know that snake may need help to destroy all those metal gears but there was no need for him to be overthrown by this simulation kid. To be honest in the entire game play i was always looking for the kid to wake up and snake to take over. But thanks to the developers i enjoyed every whining bit. If you are are a gamer that has gotten attached to snake keep an open mind and enjoy every moment you spend playing with him in the game.
still cant get enough.
