Because I hate straight simulators. And everybody I spoke to I asked which game had the more arcade feel they kept pointing to GT3. I kept going back in my mind thinking what if these people, possibly first time gamers or conversions from the PC gaming world, didn't know what I meant by arcade. What if they interpreted "arcade" as simply "a game". I would use the Ridge Racer series as an example of a true arcade racer and it felt that I was losing some people in the explanation.
This purchase was a tough one. Since I've played racing sims before and as far as I was concerned they were toooooooooo in depth and technical to keep my attention. And the control on some seemed tooooooo realistic to the point of being restrictive, keeping your sense of fun in check.
At first this sort of confirmed every suspicion I had about the GT series. The cars were hard to control presicely. Things seemed restrictive. That is until I started earning credits and blindly upgraded my rides to the best they can be (I'm still not up on fine tuning them since I don't know that the heck I'd be doing). Right now the best ride I have is a Chrysler PT Cruiser. No, I haven't purchased a million $ ride yet. The obsession with winning more races to buy more cars and the slackjaw enducing racing (because you're so focused on steering and fine pushing the gas with the analog buttons) keep one coming back for more. And if there is a significant gap in time before you can get back to it it can be intimidating because you're not sure if you remember how to drive the GT way by controller.
Instead of being pure arcade racer, this is a mix of arcade and sim. The control is forgiving enough to enjoy the game yet challenging enough to beat your head in primal frustration and utter more than 3 types of curse words.
But I still like my arcade racers where you can get right into it without having to worry if your car is tuned up well enough. OutRun 2 on the Xbox has my attention now and the demo I played of that was magnificent. Too bad it's for the Xbox though.
Definitely Worth the Long, Long, Long Wait :-)

It may be nine months late in coming to market, but Gran Turismo 3 is definitely worth the wait and the cost :-) The graphics are virtually photorealistic, putting the Final Fantasy synthespians to shame. The handling of vehicles of various types is much improved over previous incarnations of the Gran Turismo series. Extreme detail is also evident in the array and quality of sounds. Most impressive is the vision-obscuring dust in dirt-based Rally racing events. A wide array of music is available, and can be customized. And, most importantly, the Suzuki Escudo is not only included in GT3, but is also vastly improved if extra parts are acquired.
This is the PS2's MUST-HAVE game thus far, beating out even Midnight Club: Street Racing and SSX.
FINALLY!

I have waited since December of 2000, and once I played it I knew it was picture perfect. What I dont get is why people ar ecomparing GT3 to Tokyo Extreme Racer? They are two different types of games. Thats like saying ,"Well... Donkey Kong 64 better than Mario kart 64!!!" they are two totally different types of games. O.k. now about the game. The first you would notice are the fantastic graphics. Not in my whole life have I encountered graphics this fantadtic. All the cars details are all their clear as cristal. In GT2 you really didnt know if you had to turn left or right until you practically 100 feet from the turn but now its like driving a real car in Seattle. Yah, their arent as many cars as GT2 but are you really going to buy 500 cars, even when most of them omly have 63 horsepower! The new Dualshock 2 controller really makes the game come to life. You can now go into a turn 100 mph and stay going 100 mph. The new computer drivers have a bigger brain than in GT2, if you try harder they harder. It finally has egough difficulty to keep you into it for at least 2 weeks. To sum it all up, better graphics controlls, computer drivers, car detail, and an all around 6 star game. So, the wait was well took 5 false release dates waiting through 3 different seasons but now its out and in my PS2 I can easily say " 2 thumbs up" , and "A hit for every car fan". BUT WAIT THEIRS MORE! What about GT4?
P.S. GT3 does have more cars than Tokyo Extreme Racer

For some gamers, the announcement that another Gran Turismo edition was coming out for the PS2 was reason enough to buy the system last fall. Personally, with Madden and games like NHL 2001, I had plenty enough reason to get a PS2 the day it came out, but I would be lying to say that GT3 was not an added incentive. For months, I have heard and read critics rave about this game, claiming that GT3 was the game we were waiting for -- the one that would set a new standard on the PS2 platform.
After getting one of the first copies of GT3 sold in my home area, I have to say that the critics were right on. This game has to be seen and played to be believed. Let me first say that the gameplay itself is little changed from the original GT game, but in this case that is a good thing. The developers built on a solid foundation from previous offerings in the series and thankfully did not rework what did not need improvement. All of the solid handling and the complete racing experience you have come to expect from this franchise is here.
But just on the visual package alone, this game far exceeds any of its predecessors. At some points during the game, you have to wonder if you are looking at a real race -- the lighting effects, right down to being able to see the dotted lines on the road reflected in the cars, is remarkable. The car detail is breathtaking, and the variety of tracks makes the racing environments just as stunning.
Aside from the graphics, the depth of gameplay is still there, and that is what I really bought GT3 for -- I like to get involved in a game that takes longer than 2 days to complete. The Simulation mode, that gives you an amazing variety of customization choices and other surprises, will keep you involved for a long time. The ability to put 50 different styles of wheels on my first purchased car was enough to impress. And that type of detail is common in this game.
Not to say that the game is perfect. Some of the criticism I have read concerning the AI and its sometimes unrealistic driving style is well founded, and I am hoping that the next edition has the number of cars earlier versions did, once developers build on the current library. But overall, this game is as close to perfect as you can get. From the soundtrack to the overall, polished user interfaces, it is tough for me to think of anyone who would be disappointed by this game. If you are in the market for a truly great PS2 game, this is one for you.

I went to buy this game at Best Buy the first day came out and they only had three left. So I just went to go buy it because Gran Turismo is one of my favorite car games. And this game is so cool and awsome.
Physics Gran Turismo 3 delivers the most realistic racing experience. Customizable vehicles handle differently due to differences in horsepower, rid height, tire type or vehicle mass, just to name a few veriables. On the road, complex calculations will take into consideration everything from entery speed to tire friction, momentum and aerodynamics.
Details Gran Turismo 3 blurs the line between game reality. Each vehicle is constructed according to the exact specifications and dimensions, boasting over 4,000 polygons per second. Each race displays amazing visual effects including beams of light shining through trees and reflections on the cars accurately mirroring the surrounding environments.
Advanced AI Gran Turismo 3 provides advanced levels of competition. The new 'Emotion' AI makes the computer opponents more aggressive and reactive to your driving skills. Each vehicle features its own artificial intellingence stimulated by the other drivers on the track.
Dramatic Effects Every race provides sensory overload. From the dust kicked up from the side of the road to the reflections on the wet ground. Gran Turismo 3 provides stunning visuals. Sounds of racing through the wind, tires screeching at each turn and monstrous engines roaring by on either side of you will keep roaring by on either side of you will keep you alert throughout the race
Incredibly Realistic!!!!!!

I was lucky enough to get my GT3 a few days before the national street date, and am just amazed with this game!! GT3 has certainly rasied the bar, for real-time play, and replays that are so life-like the player will swear that he is watching a movie of the race he/she just completed. The car selection has been trimmed, and I see good points, and bad points to that. Sorry muscle car lovers, but they are gone from the line up. Newer cars have been added such as the brand new not even out yet Acura RSX, and new Nissan Z car, and the new prototype Viper, and Mazada RX-8!!!!! The tracks have all been beautifully rendered into the game, and the attention to detail is extraordinary. They have even thrown in a few new tracks as well. People have mentioned the heat shimmers coming up off the track, and the tire smoke of skidding tires, and sparks that shoot up after a car bottoms out on a rumble strip. All of this makes game that much improved over the previous editions of the GT series. One down side is the sound track to the game. I miss the Cardigans, and Garbage, and Filter, but not to worry i won't let that prevent me from enjoying what i think is the new Hottest Game for the Playstation 2 platform. Buy it now before it sells out!!!!!! enjoy.
Best game for PS2 yet - A must for car fanatics !

Finally yesterday I put my hands on Grand Turismo Aspec (GT3) for playstation 2.
Since I got my Playstation 2 last winter, I have to say that the machine didnýt impress me too much, I was somewhat disappointed. I rented about 10 games and although they were good game, they didnýt fully exploit the capability of the machine.
So yesterday night I got home, closed all the lights, [turn] on the sound system and put the game oný Then the intro beginsýwait a minute, am I watching Speedvision? The intro lasts for 5 minutes, after I was wondering if this was really what the game looked like?
The cars look and feel exactly the same as the real thing, no joke. New cars Iýve seen so far : Pt Cruiser (limited edition please, you can read the badge !), Nissan Z car, Mazda RX8, latest BMWýsý you see everything on the cars, suspension movement, seats, reflections on the body, The scenery is so much improved, you canýt recognize the tracks (although they are all carried over from GT2, but thereýs more that I havenýt seen yet !). The trees, flags are moving in the wind and you can really feel the speed (unlike the previous installments).
Here are the new things (too numerous to mention):
- Computer is actually smart, heýs very dirty, gets on your way if you try to passýI got cut, rammed, jammedý - Environment effect : rain (yeah!), sun blinding, heat waves coming out of the asphalt, smoke, shadows, fog, - Much improved car dynamics (roll, under/over steer, pitch) you can hardly keep the cars on the road; - About 5 time more events to compete into (including rally that is so much better than GT2 awesome !, difficulty gradually increases with your experience; - Smart car upgrade (well if youýre not careful, adding only a turbo might not make your car goes faster; - Progressive gas input (PS2 controller is pressure sensitive, so the harder you push on the button, the more you push on the accelerator pedal, like the real thing - New multi link feature allows you to ýplugý multiple playstation2 together with their own TV sets (imagine racing nights with your buddys, each having their own TV screen ! - About 20 music tracks that you can chose during the race, no more ýone song repeats over and over and over and over...)
Expect to spend many hours on this title. A must if you are or you know a car fanatic.
well you were gonna buy it anyways...

If you are like me, you bought a playstation 2 almost immediately upon arrival and have been waiting for this game since. Well... let me tell you, I purchased my copy July 11th as soon as it came out. It IS a great game. BUT much like a de la soul album, a terry gilliam movie or my mom's lasagna, it just doesnt live up to my ridiculous expectations. The game's graphics are amazing but not completely different from what we have seen on the system. Game play is virtually identical from the 2nd version (on the ps1). So what we have is the best version of something we have all seen a million times. Not the revolutionary piece of manna I had hoped for. sigh. That said, this is clearly a must purchase game for fans of sim racing who want to spend the time learning. It is certainly the best game in its class for this system. Again, let me restate. This is a great game. The one mode that is SIGNIFICANTLY better this time around is the ralley mode. It is a thrill to screech through the dust trail of a car in front of you. Consider the fact that you are getting a pure racer AND one of the best rally games at the same time and you will see why you need this game. One word of caution -- if you want a game you can jump right in with this might not be it, most of the courses and cars must be unlocked. This will be fun for gt fans but could frustrate the pure novice.

GT3 A-Spec is an extremely enjoyable racing game, combining exciting gameplay with incredibly beautiful graphics.
Customizing and tuning the cars is one of my favorite aspects of the game because done properly, these tweaks have very real effects on each car's performance. Pit strategy comes into play in the more advanced leagues and endurance races. For example, sometimes it's advantageous to outfit a car with slicker tires that may not grip the road as well but allow you to go longer between pit stops.
There are numerous courses and cars, resulting in a lot of gameplay combinations to keep you interested for the long run.
My only gripe is that while the game touts itself as the "real" driving simulation, the cars don't take crash damage. You can hit a wall head-on at 250+ mph and just bounce off and continue. Scrapes with other cars also go with any repercussions. This flaw unfortunately allows you to get by with sloppy driving technique and can turn the game into a Nascar racer. For instance, if you enter a hairpin with another car on your outside, you can time it right and drift/slam into him, sending him into the wall while allowing you to make the turn with much more exit speed than you should. This feels like a cheat. Also, once you reach a certain level of success, you've earned enough money and obtained enough cars that finding challenging competition can be difficult.
So to recap,
PROS
* Beautiful graphics
* Deep gameplay with lots to keep you coming back
CONS
* No option for real damage to cars
* No Internet/online play (hopefully in GT4 later this year)
You really can't ask for much more out of your $....
