THE GAME PHYSICS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO A T. THE HANDLING OF THE CARS IS UNBELIVABLY REALISTIC.I'VE PLAYED A RUNNING DEMO OF THIS GAME AND I TELL YOU I'VE PLAYED A LOT OF RACING GAMES IN THE PAST BUT THIS THIS IS GONNA BE BRILLIANT.WET WEATHER RACING,RALLY,TIME TRIALS AND THE REPLAYS WHAT ELSE CAN A HARDCORE GAMER ASK FOR!!!

The graphics are stupendous. The images are great. The detail is fantastic. But it isn't any fun to play.
The reason for this is GT3's overburdensome menu system. You spend so much time tweaking your cars and going through the tremendous amount of menus and sub menus in order to qualify or enter a race, that the whole process kills the fun of the game. GT3 is basically GT2 with superior graphics. The courses are the same...just better looking.

Qualifiying for licenses is also a big chore. While it was fun during the first two GT's, this third one is just another step that removes you from the action of racing. The experience is frustrating.
I had high hopes for GT3, but it fell way short of being entertaining. If a racing game prevents you from racing, then what is the point? The game is beautiful graphically. There is no doubt about this. However, the game is pure frustration because you do more menu navigating then actual racing. If racing is your interest, check out WipeOut Fusion as an alternative.

Too good in some ways, too bad in some others...

About the positive side let me put it this way: some people are claiming that it's probably worth buying a ps2 just to play this game. I thought this was exaggeration. I personally bought the PS2 mainly as a DVD player with the added value of a video game console. Owning 5 other top-selling and very good ps2 games that I truly enjoy (and owning GT2 also), after seeing and playing GT3 I really have to agree with such claim: it's worth buying a ps2 even if only to play GT3.

I think nothing in the computer game industry gets close at all to the quality of GT3's graphics and realism. It's truly something to behold, and if you honor Asian traditions, something to even bow to ;-), to bend down your head in respect to, bring honorable presents to, light a candle, drink tea and meditate about Zen in front of etc. etc.

You can get your way to find minor objections if you are picky enough, like the Ben-Hur looking audience when you get close enough, the cars not showing any damage when colliding, the way the cars hit the road after jumping in the air, also the look of the trees when the camera spins... Other than those not-so-incredibly realistic details, most of the time this game really doesn't look like a video game at all but closer to an actual car race transmission on tv, only with slightly sharper resolution and colors, and great music in the background. That may sound exaggerated but only after seeing it you would understand, it's really *that* impressively realistic.

The physics engine seems very close to that of GT2 (which was already excellent), and the AI doesn't seem much improved according to some reviewers (I couldn't tell yet), but the graphics are truly waaaaaaaaay ahead. It's just something to behold and experience and enjoy, no doubt.

Now, the dark side...

The major negative point I saw right when playing it for the 1st time... WHERE ARE THE BMW'S AND PORSCHES AND FERRARIS ???????????????????? I wonder what these pseudo-smart decision makers at Sony were thinking about when choosing the cars for GT3... ("What player in the world would be sooooooooo interested in driving any healthy variety of top impressive gorgeous and powerful European models, when GT3 will offer them, let's say, a dozen different imprezzas instead?")

BIG ZERO, NOT EVEN ONE FERRARI, and barely one BMW is almost a joke, quite a considerable flaw in a game like this with so many resources put into it, with such a display of excellence, and also with such a global market for it. I think it doesn't even honor the excellence and effort of the rest of the developing team to have made such bad choices choosing the car choosers. Really BAAAAD move there Sony.

Still the graphics remain breathtaking and just jaw-opening. Take a look at any other racing game you want, you name it, actually arguably take a look at *any* game you want, and then take a look at GT3's graphics, remember to bring your honorable gifts, bow slowly and respectfully etc. etc.

As many Ferraris they included (uppercase ZERO) that's the # of stars I would give the dumb car choosers in GT3's development team. Still, [the] question is "On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, 5 being the best, how much fun is this game?" there's only one choice obviously...

Fun, but somewhat lacking

First, let me say Gran Turismo 3 is the best racing/sim game on the market for any console. It is graphically without peer, and the whole audio/visual experience is breathtaking. The cars are rendered perfectly, and the replays are absolutely unbelievable, it is the only game besides MGS2 that makes me respect the graphical power the PS2 possesses. I have a few complaints though. First, for all of the graphical overhauls, the AI has stayed stagnant, the drivers seem to just follow the same line everytime. I expected a lot more work on this aspect, as I thought that was the main weakness of the previous 2 Gran Turismos. The only other complaint is the cars that are available. There are obvious no shows, like Porsche and Ferrari, but I would have liked to have seen some more consumer level cars. There are a few, but not as many as I had expected. But those are my only complaints, it is a supremely fun game, with many racing options and modes. From the hyper-long endurance races to the maximum speed loop, there is something for everyone in this game. It's well worth the money, and one of only a few games worth owning on the PS2.

Attention: Read this before spending yoru hard earned cash!

I suppose this game is great if you haven't played the first two, but I have......alot. And this game doesn't have ANYTHING that dramatically improved besides the graphics. For the first 20 mintues of playing this game I was in awe of the near photo quality graphics. But after that...I realized it's just the same game as the first two, but with less cars. And who wants to race on the same tracks that was in the first two games anyways??????? C'mon....I spent 50 bucks on this damn thing. Give me smart AI, give me more cars..NOT LESS. Give me body damage on the vehicles. GIVE ME NEW TRACKS DAMMIT! I can't beleive the perfect ratings game reviewers are giving it. Maybe they realized that it's just the same game, and that's why you can now find it on ebay for 25 bucks.

Like I said, if you never played Gran Turismo 1 or 2, by all means get this one. But if you already played them, RENT BEFORE SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED CASH. I know I'm going to be more careful for now on, that's for sure.

Gran Turismo 3 is the best racing game ever. Better than Project Gothom, or anything on the computer. Project Gothom is ok, but there are only like 25 cars. GT3 has like 200. The graphics on GT3 are great and very lifelike. The cars handle like real cars too. The Dual Shock 2 makes this game even more lifelike. When you hit a bumb you can feel it. Being able to modify the cars is a great feature. GREAT GAME!!!

I'm, not a big fan of racing games but this is the best game i've ever had. At first it may seem boring but when you go through some levels it's totally awsome you can modify you're cars and they give you some free cars and their awsome. For those who don't have Gran Turismo 1 & 2 i totally recomend that you don't buy them and that you buy this one.

Fantastic game. the game has amazing graphics and all cars are fully custimizable. The game is great but has some mistakes sony entertainment shouldn't have done.1. They got rid of used cars so you have to buy a new car no matter what even though they stopped production years ago (ex.1990 Mazda Rx-7 Efini III.). 2. when you start advancing in the game you go to professional leage it isn't professional its the same as amateur leage but has even more laps (15)and after a while gets boring. 3. Predictable AI. and Lastly they could have made the licence tests a tad easier ( Super Licence is extremly hard). Sony should make the cars body panels be changeable and the spoilers as well. You should be able to change the cars color as well. If you don't mind this stuff or you just started playing GT3 you'll enjoy it. I'm a Gran Turismo fan and think they did a great job but think they should fix the game with the things i wrote above. I can't wait for GT4 because i'm sure it'll be better.

A great racing game too realistic for its own good?

"Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec" is one of the first games (along with "Twisted Metal: Black") that became a Playstation 2 must-have. After the great reception of "Gran Turismo 2" on the Playstation, it was inevitable that a sequel would be made for Sony's next-generation console. Numerous delays only caused the hype to grow even further, and when it was released the PS2 started to gain some respect, thanks to the spectacular, realistic experience the game presented. However, was the game too realistic for its own good?

The Gran Turismo series is the most popular racing series in the world. And with good reason. The series has prided itself on the fact that it goes to great lengths to simulate realistic driving conditions. "Gran Turismo 2" accomplished this feat effortlessly, and the third installment carries over that feat flawlessly. Different cars have different driving abilities, and these abilities can be modified by tweaking the car. Changing tires, replacing flywheels, and even lowering the body of the car all affect the way a car is driven. For racing fans who enjoy customizing their own cars, this is pure bliss. Add in the fact that weather conditions and driving surfaces also affect driving, and realism has reached a whole new level.

Graphically, the game is amazing. One car in "GT3" has more detail than a single scene in "GT2". The courses in the game are very well designed, and small details like kicking up dust add to the experience. Probably the only thing graphically-impaired is the audience watching the races, which is basically a collection of paper cutouts. Of course, the main focus of the game is the cars, not the people, so it's only a minor nitpick.

Soundwise, it's above average. Another thing the Gran Turismo series prides itself in is individually recording a real car's engine for the corresponding car in the game; the engine even sounds different when driving from a third-person perspective and from the driver's seat! And sounds like tires screeching and dust flying are top notch. The mixed bag lies in the soundtrack. The songs are mainly old 80s tunes, including a remixed version of a Lenny Kravitz song for the game's main theme and a rendition of "99 Red Balloons". Some people will be put off by this collection of songs, but most people will ignore them when listening to the actual sounds of the game.

Are there flaws in the game? Unfortunately, yes. The AI doesn't "put up a challenge"; all the rival racers do is follow a specific path along the race track, making some races feel "contrived". Still, the AI is threatening enough so as not to be ignored. Also, while there are a lot of race tournaments, the number of actual tracks is limited; the same tracks reappear in different tournaments. Of course, racing the same track with a different kind of car can be a different experience, but people wanting variety will be disappointed. Finally, initially, the cars available are very slow-moving, and it takes a while to build enough prize money to buy better and faster cars (and to tweak them for better performance). This can cause casual gamers to lose heart.

All in all, "Gran Turimso 3: A-Spec" lives up to all of its hype, but at a cost. Its deep realism, which is its major selling point, is also its greatest flaw. Casual gamers looking for speed in their racing will be sorely disappointed, and gamers hoping for a game like "Beetle Adventure Racing 64" will also be disappointed. But for any gamer who wishes to engage in a deeply satisfying game where you create and race a personal collection of customized cars, "Gran Turismo 3" is exactly what they've been looking for.
