I'm giving this game 4 stars because I believe it is superior to other baserball games available, but.....I purchased this game without doing my homework or renting it, on the strength of 2002 and 2003. I was somewhat disappointed with the product I received. The most disappointing aspect in my view is the regression in graphics, allthough it seems to be a trend. If you compare 2002 to 2003 you'll find that while 03 has superior gameplay, for some strange reason 02 looks alot cleaner. And it's downright baffling when it comes to the glaring difference in graphic quality of 04 compared to 03. That's not to say it's complete garbage. But disappointing none the less.
As far as the menu's and roster control, it's a bit clumsy as well as time consuming to get through. It is not for those of you that want a superstar team through trades. Unless you control all the teams (in franchise/expansion), it's likely you'll not get all the players you like. And if you do decide to control all the teams to get the players you like, good luck in adjusting the rosters of 32 MLB teams with a slow menu screen. I quit after the an hour and the third team.
That being said, at the moment I'm still faithfully playing to try to get myself used to it before I decide to take it back or not. As far as the pitching and hitting aspect, it is the most relistic game I've ever played. The main problem I have with the game play is the extremely spacious outfield that turns seemingly lofty fly balls into doubles and triples. The outfielders are a bit slow to the ball as well.
Maybe I'm stuck in the past and don't want to let go or maybe i'm just terminally cynical. Likely if you've played 02 or 03, you'll be feelin' what i'm saying. I definitely recommend that you rent it before you play it. Although with video prices what they are nowadays renting it is like buying it. Except you have to give it back before you get your money's worth......... there i go again..... somebody stop me.

I thought this game was going to be good because of all the high reviews. When i got the game it looked good because of the good graphics but the controls and gameplay are difficult to master. Even on rookie mode it is extremely hard to hit the ball. I also dont like when you hit start during a game you cant exit the game or access the options. Overall this game confused me more than it amused me!
too addictive

This game has a horrible glich that doesn't let you hit. Even if you put it on auto aim you can't tell what pitch it is because you can't swing late. You have to swing the bat right when the ball is relesed from the pitcher's hand. Don't play this game or buy it
[bad bad bad]

This game is the worse sports game I have ever played in my life. The beginning of the game is ok, the commentary is porbably one out of two things good in this game. When you play this game you cant hit for beans. Even if you put it on rookie and auto-aim you cant hit the ball everytime, about 5 tyimes i got struck out on auto-aim. i only hit 20 homeruns, in a span of 162 games. Not only you cant hit, if you do hit the ball 30 % of the time it will come back in the catchers glovee, so you vbarly knicked the ball. The AI is terrible in this game. i got out so many times becasue the computer just decided to run another base, for the HECK of it, and i couldnt push anyting to make him come back to the other base. When you start a franchise and when ur in it, that is awesome, i have never seen a game in-depth as this, adn i am an avid sports gamer. I buy baseball, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, anything sport games, every year with every company, so i have like 4 baseball games from 2003, etc. So the in-depth of this is absolutley fantastic, the old-fashioned writing though is very nerve-wrackong, and doesnt help with your eye sight. the only reason i ghave this game 3 stars was becasue of the in-depth part. But madden 2004, will be better in depth than this game. Overall, dont even think about buying this game if you wanna play a game, you will commit a crime if you buy it. Now if you wanna just manage the team adn not play the games in the franchise or whatever, i would highly recommend it, even thgough the writing is quite hard to read.
Dissapointing...you gotta get MVP 2003 instead.

After buying nearly every BB game on PS2 in 2001/2002 i was impressed with Acklaim ALLStarBaseball , ASB2002 was good, ASB2003 was great so of course i bought ASB2004.
How dissapointed i was. The players dont look lifelike (cartoony) infact this aspect has gone backwards. The fielding is off the mark and overall things just dont "feel" right, batting, pitching and baserunning are weaker than previous versions.
Im into the whole Management side anyhow, and was impressed with the concept more than the end result.Very indepth but poorly presented. With old fashioned style screens, handwritten fonts that cant be read(and i own a 46" TV), i was dissapointed. And if you dont understand the Rule 5 Draft dont switch on FULL management mode.
Things seemed a little slow and it had a PC feel more than a console game, especially in Manage Mode.If you have ASB 2003 , keep it, its the best of this series.
If you want what is the best baseball game on console, get EA Sports MVP2003, it rocks (check out my review of that game).

This game is graphically impressive with a very good presentation. Unfortunately, the game play leaves much to be desired. The batting is far too difficult and the number of fielding errors made is very annoying. There is also a delay when trying to advance base runners which results in way too many unneccessary pick offs and throw outs. Base runners constantly get caught like idiots between bases. Don't buy this game.

This is one of they best baseball games i have ever played. This game is not only fun but also challanging. You have to work to get runs and to hit home runs. The pitching on this game is wounderfull. I think the batter actually learns your pitches. And beleive me when you play against the computer it is not easy (even when you have the batter on easy mode. I also like that there are real time errors. Sometimes a player just looses the ball in the sun and can't get to it. I also like the general manager options. It makes you feel like you are right in the gm office making all the decisions for the team. I also like the fact that there is spring tranning. Many baseball games do not incorporate that this one does. The game is so realistic there are even weaviers in the game. This is really a top notch game. I Suggest that you get it.
Its a pretty good game.

Well, it has great options and game modes. But the play is a little slow. Plus the gameplay can get frustrating. But the graphics and stadiums are really great. [...]

I picked this game up on an impulse and boy, am I glad I did! I never thought I'd care about franchise mode, but now I'm hooked on it. It's very cool to build and manage your own organization. Also, the hitting is very fair, with a good number of hits vs. strikeouts. I am playing on veteran, but there is a harder and an easier option if you find the hitting too challenging. If you're interested in high scoring affairs, the easiest setting will have you scoring in double digits (I don't know what's with the other reviews saying it is hard to hit, because, after an hour or so learning curve, it is very easy on the lowest setting). Also, custom stadiums, broken bats, batters charging the mound, this game has it all!
