Best Baseball Game Hands Down

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1
Date: April 26, 2003
Author: Amazon User

I recently rented this game because of all the mixed reviews I read and I didn't want to buy a game that I wouldn't end up playing. But this is by far the best baseball game out right now. There are many different options in this game compared to MVP(some say better than ASB) And as far as the hitting goes, I actually think it was easy to pick up on and it's realistic. If your batter is good against righty then the batting icon is larger than when he faces a lefty, And that chages from player to player. I don't own and hardly play baseball games but this game made me enjoy baseball much more than I thought I could. The only downside is that high 90's fastballs are incredibly hard to hit (once the pitcher gets tired its gets easy) and there are more errors that there should be (still its not hard to deal with) but other than those two things I can't complain. So I give ASB 2004 a 5 star and proclaim it as the best baseball came out, hands down!

Here is my Honest Opinion

I went to Blockbuster about a week ago knowing i was going to get some kind of baseball game. When i skimmed through all the baseball games, i noticed that High Heat 2004 and MVP 2003 were out of stock. The only one left was All-Star Baseball 2004. I was already a little dissapointed because MVP 2003 looked like a really good game with high reviews. As i started to play the game my options were opening. It was alright playing it for the first time. The simple, although sometimes a little lazy on the throws, which can [...] a guy off when the computers game-winning run is tagging up at 3rd.
The pitching is also simple and easy. Your pitchers will not get very many strikeouts, probably only 3-5 in 9 innings. It is very easy to strikeout batters if you put the settings on "probable pitching" which is simply when the computer throws the first three pitches for you.
Hitting is kind of difficult at first. You almost always make contact, but 75% of the time fly-out or ground-out. When you think about it though that is really what happens most of the time in real basbeall. Hitting homeruns is very hard. I usually hit one every 3 games. Sometimes though I'll hit 5 in one game! So it really depends on if your game is on or not that day.
Overall this is a good game. Difficult at first but you really start to get the hang of it.
Oh and the managing is great! I love being a GM. This game has amazing GM controls. Bringing up minors and the Rule 5 draft. This game is very good.

Read the Manual

Don't like the batting cursor interface? There's an easy (timing) interface, zone (timing+directional) interface, and a classic interface for batting. Think the computer is too good at fielding? You can make it field for you. Are you also in love with high heat's pitching interface? ASB's options allow the exact same style of pitching with no cursor or strike zone displayed on screen. Just you and the batter. And you can even move one runner at a time. All the problems stated about this game can be solved if you just read the manual. The frame rate is shaky but the graphics are great, the franchise is deep, and the "extracurriculars" are by far the best out there, especially when you consider the availability of online roster updates. And finally, if you think this video-game is slow and boring during the actual gameplay, THAT'S HOW BASEBALL REALLY FEELS. True baseball fans will appreciate this level of realism. Casual fans can appreciate the extras and can use the gameplay options to play however they want. This is not only the best baseball game out there, it's gameplay options can even make it resemble any baseball game out there. Just read the manual.

how can you NOT give this game a 5?

if you like baseball games, this is the best one out there. unmatched gameplay, improved graphics etc. they could follow EA sports' franchise mode a little better. certainly room for improvement there. the user interface is tough to learn, and i found myself getting "stuck" on a particular page at times, but once you figure it out the game is pure crack. 5/5

Close But Not It

I'm a franchis addict but I like to actually play the game sometimes as well. Gameplay for ASB 2004 is infuriating. When on defense, your guys are morons and do stupid things. The guy you are controlling is OK, but what is with that stupid crouch thing all your players do at the end of the play. No one thought to program fundamentals and smart managing into the AI.

The franchise options are in-depth but simulations are infuriatingly unrealistic. The game is always won in the last couple innings so your starter never gets the decision. Plus, as time goes by, no young pitchers develop. All the hot young prospects are outfielders.

I'm always a fan of having the oldtime players, but there is not as many as you think and ASBs player attribute system is so broad and vague that none of them are particularly special. Plus, a few notable names were missing (Ted Williams, Joe D.)

All in all, this game was average at best. I may be a perfectionist when it comes to baseball games, but this one just left me unsatissfied.

WARNING DO NOT BUY tons of glitches and unreal plays

when i first got this game i thought that it would fix all the glitches from last years game. I was wrong. In this game you will see the players catch the ball with their feet and other body parts. ONE THING THAT IS TERRIBLE IN THIS GAME IS THAT THE CPU ALWAYS ROBS YOU ON UNREAL CATCHES AT LEAST ONCE AN INNING. IT IS REALLY HARD TO GET A HIT BECAUSE OF THIS. i would only recommend this game to people with lots of patience also to people who dont get [angry] at video games at all...

This is the best baseball game ever

All-Star baseball 2004 is a great game. It has wonderful graphics. It has many extra choices that you can choose to do. There is a great franchise mode. You can play at all the classic fields. You can play at the field of dreams. you can use baseball legends. Lue Gherig babe Ruth Ty cobbs ted williams and many many more. i suggest you but this game. It is defenitly worth the price. If you want an easy baseball game do not get this game.this game can be a little challenging. It isn't impossible too hit a homerun but it is not easy like slugfest and other baseball games. This is a great game

Game has some serious problems and Acclaim does not care

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 1 / 2

I was very much looking forward to receiving this game based on reviews of the play. I love baseball and really wanted to find a realistic baseball game. Sadly, this game is not the game I thought it would be. Indeed, this game also has some serious technical problems that Acclaim does not seem to care about. First of all the problems- 1)When pitching on a count that is less than a full count, the batter fouls off the ball and yet the batter is out. What?! This is frustrating and annoying. The announcers say "foul ball" and yet the batter sits down and you are charged with an out. 2) In a run down between two bases, if the baserunner gets within 3-4 feet of the player with the ball, you are called out. Ridiculous- there is a substantial amount of space in between the players, yet, the runner is out. Here are the game play problems I have found- 1) The batter lines the ball out to the pitcher AT LEAST 6-8 times a game. This rarely happens in a real baseball game. 2) Home Runs are WAY too easy to hit. It is not unusual to hit 6-10 home runs a game, even on All Star level. So far, I have had games of 18-16, 22-19, 21-17. This can be fun for awhile yet, sometimes the batter even BREAKS HIS BAT and hits a home run! How can this be?! To top it all off and make matters worse, I have tried to contact Acclaim electronic sports and they have refused to respond or even try to give me some satisfaction. I emailed them twice with my complaints and received no response. I then called their customer line (not even a toll free call!)and after I was on hold for quite awhile, I was told a "game consultant" would call me back within 20 minutes. Again, no return phone call, no response. They are definitely portraying an "we don't care" attitude. For my money, I would never buy a game from Acclaim again if this is the way they treat customers.

In summary, do not buy this game. It will only make you angry with all the technical problems that it has.

go with High Heat '04

Although it is undoubtedly the greatest game I have ever played on the field (smooth and realistic), you cannot adjust the length of your season and number of innings played per game. If you don't like to simulate dynasty/franchise games you have to play a full spring training, 162 games and playoffs!!! Also - the contract and minor league system is pretty weird, not to mention difficult at best. Players have 'points' that determine their value. ....

stinx!

this game is the worse baseball game i ever played. the graphics are good, but the gameplay, mainly batting, is impossible. you have to guess where the pitch is before you swing, and their arent special pitches or anything. if you want to buy a sweet game 4 people who wanna sit down & start hittin homers, get mlb slugfest 20-04.
