... Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction (2001) is the follow-up to the popular game Diablo 2 (2000), it is the expansion set which unleashes a whole new world for the game.

With the enlistment of the new characters, fans of the game will be excited to see the new special features each character has to offer.

Druid: A male character, this character has the ability to use several elemental attacks, shapeshifting, and summoning skills which involves life or damage enhancing spirits or animals such as ravens, wolves, and a bear. This character specializes in club/maul weapons.

Assassin: A female character, this character has the ability to perform massive melee damage attacks, speed enhancing skills, elemental traps (fire and lightning), and the ability to summon a powerful shadow warrior. The Assassin specializes in the claw weapon.

The expansion pack also includes a new Act, Act 5. Ever since Diablo was destroyed, his brother Baal (as featured on the game cover) has set out to destroy the world. In order to get to Baal, you must pass each Act, just like in the original Diablo 2 game.

The expansion pack includes hundreds of new items. Some of the new items are class-specific. In other words, items only based for one type of character. For example, the newly featured Matriarchal Bow can only be used by an [Amazon] (It also will not work on the Rogue hireling). Items also featured are Runes - Runes have their distinctive abilities when socketed into socketable items. Items can be socketed by completing the first quest of Act 5 and attaining your reward from the Act 5 merchant, Larzuk ( I think that's his name..). Multiple runes can also form into RuneWords - (Listen recipies in which runes are placed into empty socket items in a certain order that grants special abilities). Some runes are very common, while others are very rare and pay a heavy price to trade for. Other new items feature charms. Charms come in three sizes - small (1 inventory space), large (2 inventory space), and grand (3 inventory space). Charms have their own special abilities. Charms can have abilities that enhance your life, mana (used for skills), attributes, skills, resistance, attack rating, and more. Charms are widely used for enhancing the characteristics of a character. Gather them up quickly!

What more to say.. other than Act 5 involves quests that can increase your character's overall resistances, the ability to hire a new hireling (the Sword only Barbarian) and instant increase skill levels. (Depending upon the level of the character and the difficulty, instant skill upgrades are rewarded for defeating 3 challengers).

These new items and new characters are widely used in dueling, magic finding(a special quality that helps increase the chances of finding rarer items), or just having fun doing quests and what not.

When I first got this expansion pack, I was anticipating a lot of changes, and I did. Game-play changes weren't affected as much, only with the addition of a fifth act. However, hundreds of new items make the game more fun to play.

Over the two years it's been out, I would probably advise a warning...

Over the 3 years this game has been out, several hackers have spread thousands of illegal items through the game. This makes the game less challenging and less fun, because certain lovers of [internet store] have their credit cards stripped down so they can enjoy these illegal items and easily dominate the game, which makes it less challenging and more boring when played.

But, there's hope. With a new patch (a file that upgrades the game-play of a game), hundreds of new items and many new abilities will be introduced to the thousands of players on Lord of Destruction. A new feature, the Ladder Realm, where everyone will start out with nothing - NO HACKS!! - are able to complete new quests, find new items, and new items that are only for the Ladder Realm).

Although Blizzard has tried to release this patch soon, it's been in the works for over a year and will probably be released later this year (2003), according to sources. Sources tell us that currently, ideas for the game currently going under examination. They are trying their hardest to get this out as soon as possible.

And if you wanna blame newly released games from Blizzard on this delay, you shouldn't. Blizzard has thousands upon thousands of workers working on separate projects - so this is no excuse for the delay.

Blizzard has also been trying very hard to crack down on the hackers, but with new hacked items that were spread out some months ago, it might be too late. Diablo 2 looks like it's turning into Diablo 1. Diablo 1 was a very popular game and was named Game of the Year, but sadly, hackers took over the game, and there are hardly players (probably a few hundred).

But if you want to have your own individual fun, buy the expansion along with the original Diablo 2 game...

This is probably the best Role Playing Game I have ever owned. The world in which you are immersed is expansive and takes hours to completely play each ACT. I really enjoyed playing each of the five original characters. I was less impressed with the Druid and Assassin that were introduced with the expansion, but with the addition of new items and completely new ACT, the expansion is a must have for any DIABLO fan. The multiplayer feature on this game is awesome. Giving you the opportunity to mix with other characters that complement your own, driven by individuals who love the game as much as you do. I spent over 1 and a half years playing this game and only stopped because I no longer have the kind of time this game demands. I highly recommend this game to everyone looking for good way to spend the majority of their time setting in front of their computer.

A lot of folks have talked about the new classes and new Act. However, some of the smaller enhancements are pretty cool. I didn't really appreciate them until I started playing with them.

Repair All - A nice touch. When you visit a blacksmith, there is now a button to repair all items that you have equipped. This isn't a big deal for spell casters, but fighters will love it. It takes what usually is 4 or 5 clicks and makes it one. It doesn't repair anything in your inventory; they have to be repaired individually.

Weapon Swapping - Again, this one is mostly for the fighters. It allows you to equip two different sets of items in your left and right hand - i.e., a sword and shield in one set and a two handed axe in the other. You can switch between the sets by pressing the "W" key on the keyboard. I have a Javazon that I equipped with a spear in her second set. When she wants to throw things, she has javelins and a shield; if she wants to do huge melee damage, I press "W" and she switches to her spear. There are quite a few possiblities here - a Bowazon alternating between crossbow and long bow - switching between a mace for the undead vs. a sword for other creatures - switching between weapon and shield vs. throwing potions.

Throwing Weapons - Two things: There are now Magic Throwing Weapons - Javazons take heart. Also, you can "re-load" on a throwing weapon by repairing it. So if you find that set of Superior Javelins or Superior Balanced Axes - you don't have to worry about "throwing them away". Just head back to town BEFORE you run out of them and repair them.

Long-Term Hirelings - Hirelings were pretty cool in the basic Diablo II, however, they died once you got pretty far into an Act. Now, you can heal and equip hirelings. You can heal a hireling by giving him/her one of your healing potions. Also, if you find armor, helmets, shields or weapons, you can give them to your hireling and he/she enjoys the full benefits of using it. The hirelings also level up like regular characters and will follow you from Act to Act.

These enhancements don't unbalance the game (at least they didn't seem to as I played through the first two quests). But they do give you some new strategies for playing the game. I'm looking forward to many hours of play with the expansion pack.

Worth the wait

Most of the new features are minor but do add up. Since D2 was all about killing the minions of evil and finding new and powerful things, the expansion does more of that better. There are new items to find, new ways to customize items and many things have gotten a boost. Such as how worthless socketed items were. Now when you collect the right runes in the right order you can make a powerful unquie out of a socketed item. In ways like this it makes the gameplay fresher and more interesting.

Even with new features and imporved old ones, it still plays the same. This is good if you liked the basic concept to start with, but while it's lack of complexity makes it enjoyable, it would be nicer if there were more to it.

Getting too much sleep? This is better than caffeine.

Normally, I don't play action or "shooter" type games. Civilization, The Sims, Zeus .. these are more my style. So when a friend introduced me to the original Diablo game some years ago, I never expected to like it, but thought I would humor him. I did like it .. but found it a little creepy, and never finished it. I'm not sure why I got Diablo 2 when it came out, but I found I liked it even more than the original. But still, I never really made it very far, only to the third act (the dread "ankle-biters" act).

Then, I needed a new game, and the expansion had just come out. It was relatively cheaper than a whole new game, so I got it. Now I can't stop playing. I've finally finished the first difficulty level, and am happily slaying critters left and right in the next difficulty level (which is a heck of a lot harder). And my favorite thing to do .. Hunt For Cool New Items.

The expansion pack offers 2 new classes, and a whole slew of new items. And I mean zillions of new items, with all new properties for your old ones, new sets, etc! And, of course, a new act, replete with catapults flinging fire and ice (and poison and lightning), fire towers shooting at you while you frantically try to slay the teleporting, fire-throwing little buggers that seem to pop up out of nowhere, and barricaded walls blocking further progress.

In short, even if you hated "shooter" games like Quake (ugh!) or Doom (blech!), give Diablo 2 a try. "Free time" may become an alien term to you, and sleep a luxury that takes a backseat to "let me just finish this one more quest..."

Fun & Challenging, but Baal-runs ruins it.

Diablo 1 was fun and addicting. However, with duping (the ability to duplicate any item in-game), everything got just way too easy. You could beat Diablo without much of a thought as everybody had the most powerful of weapons.

Diablo II was much more challenging as that bug has been resolved. The graphics were improved and the ability to learn only a certain number of skills added a real strategic portion to the game.

The only bad thing that Blizzard should have resolved is what is known as a Baal run. Baal is a new character in the expansion. He throws four groups of minions at you to defeat and you end up getting a lot of experience. If you don't kill Baal, you can do this over and over and over again racking up a lot of experience points. Unfortunately, this makes leveling up and advancing waaaay to easy and took the challenge out of the game. Now the only challenging thing is getting to Baal. So if you are playing online on Battle.Net, you are playing against characters who did Baal runs for a couple of hours and are now more buff than imaginable. Blizzard should have fixed this a long time ago.

After playing for several years, I think I'm going to "graduate" to World of Warcraft (also by Blizzard) which I've noticed is quite similar in many ways. But I'm sure I will return to the world of Diablo quite often as there are still a few challenges left to conquer.

Very cool.

Sweet sweet game. The beginning story which takes place after the conclusion of Diablo II is visually impressive and sounds great. The background music is pretty nice also. As for the game play, it the same as the others. Just hackin monsters up. There are some nice upgraded functions such as you can now carry a backup weapon. You click on the 1 key above your weapon for a weapon and/or shield or 2 for your backup weapon or shield. They also have allowed more strorage space in your storage chest. Another nice function is being able to revive any of the characters you hired to help you on your quest. There are many new weapons and other items (though most of them are for the 2 new characters added to the game), so I haven't gotten to see what they can do yet. The new monsters they have added are very cool. I have only played through the first 3 quests so far, but I haven't seen the same monster yet. There are only 2 things I didn't like about this game so far. 1 was the price. It is a little steep for an expansion pack that has only 1 added chapter, and 2 was how easy it has been so far. I have beaten the first 3 quests in less than 5 hours and until the end of the last quest, I wasn't in any real danger of dying (this was with a level 36 Barbarian). Other than those 2 things, this game has been alot of fun. And don't worry about everyone saying there is no story or the music is repetitious in every Diablo game released. They keep buying and so should you because it is just fun. Enjoy.

The game's good but I am no action game reveiwer.

The game is more action oriented and that's good, but LoD also has very good RPG elements that will attract many RPG fans. The RPG focuses more on skills and perks than it does your usual strenght dex, ect like other games. The Druid, to me, is a very fun character to play and more interesting than the necromancer or the other magic users. Shapeshift/summon is a good combo, be what follows you. The warewolf is a bit weak at the start, however. I have only briefly tried the Assasin and cannot review her in the game. Elemental magic sometimes does not work and should only be used if you like to gamble with your(character's) life. I got waisted many-a-time by the "army of the dead" in the graveyard because I couldn't target an enemy with that darned fire elemental. the Vines are excellent for that work.

Buyer Beware

While this is indeed a good game, it is too highly addictive. If you are looking to find a game in which you mindlessly play for hundreds of hours, this is it. I was totally into this game so much so i did one of the stupidest things one could do, bought items for a game on ebay.
Another very annoying portion of the game is the online. While free is a very compelling insentive, there are drawbacks. Constantly not being able to join games that you are making, constant lines to make games, and above all, the hacks. the hacks make the game unbalanced and irrating in fighting.
I HAVE PLAYED FOR AT LEAST A YEAR AND HACKS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PRESENT, MANY OD THE SAME HACKS. (hella days since the last update)
I COULD HAVE GOT A JOB AND ACTUALLY MADE HELLA BANK IN THE TIME I HAVE PLAYED IN THIS GAME.
IF U DO WANT TO BUY JUST LOOK BACK EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE AND ASK YOURSELF, WHY DO I PLAY?

In D2 LoD, you are following the path of Baal, the Lord of Destruction. He has ventured into the Barbarian highlands to find the Worldstone, the source of the Soulstones. The town you play in is Harrogath, NPC's include Malah the healer, Larzuk the armorer, Nilathak the Elder,(he's also a Necromancer, you'll see how in the fifth quest), Cain, who accompanies you through all the acts, and Anya, the Elder Aust's daughter. Two new characters are available, the Assassin and the Druid. Assassin skills feature lightning, fire, and blade Traps, Shadow Disciplines, and Martial Arts. An all new set of weapons was created- claws, of which she can hold one in each hand. This includes katars, blade talons, cestus', and scissors suwayyah. The Druid features elemental skills, like Hurricane and Armageddon, he can summon spirits like wolves and vines, and he can shape shift into a Werewolf or Werebear. He has a unique helm set of Sky Spirits, Antlers, and Wolf Heads. Of course, there are six new quests, and various monsters such as Minotaur demons, Sucubbi, and Enslaved. New "little" things include jewels, runes, expanded stash, and class-specific items. This is the game that completes the Trilogy.
