The problem with analog controllers is that they can be misused by developers. Jet Set Radio Future was a victim, and so is the X-Box version of Soul Calibur 2 -- meaning simply tapping the buttons won't get you any response. Everyone I talked to doesn't notice this in either game, so maybe I'm just crazy or have gotten defective copies.
As for the game itself, Soul Calibur 2 is little more than another scenario along with Soul Calibur [1] and Soul Edge. The controls remain untouched (I'm not making a stupid joke either): Block, [Normal] Attack, Vertical Strike, kick, and Power-Up. Also, jumping isn't a simple matter of pressing Up. You have to press an attack button too, and press it hard.
If you aren't irritated by having to press-hard buttons like I do, the X-Box version is the best one to get. After all, it features Spawn. Although Spawn isn't the best character in the game (that honor, in my opinion, goes to either Ivy or Inferno), he's the best exclusive character. How this version compares to the others in other areas, however, is unbeknownst to me. I did do graphical comparisons between the X-Box game and a GameCube playable demo, and noticed that the GameCube version's graphics were slightly richer. Maybe it's different when you use an S-Video.
I haven't touched the PS2 version yet.
Bottom line: If you don't have sensitive fingers, get the X-Box version. Otherwise, I hear the GameCube version is the best, control-wise.

You will not be sorry!

I bought a dreamcast shortly after its release in 1999, and bought the original Soul Caliber. 4 years later I'm still playing the original. I have never found a game that it so easy to learn, looks so good, and challenges you to master it. Almost every person I have ever known that did not like fighting games loved the original, from the sound to the music and graphics. I've played the Demo version of Soul Caliber 2, as well as seeing the intro off of the internet, and I must say I am very impressed and can not wait for the game to be officially released. If you like fighting games, from Stree Fighter II to Soul Edge to Tao Feng, you'll love this game. Its easy to get hooked on, but will still find ways to kick your butt after playing for a few years.

First f#*k anyone who said this isnt the best game of all time, period, nuff said. I'm really here to let out how to get the best weapons in the game. In Subchapter 2(Which is opened only after reaching level 72 and completing a chapter 4 mission) you can buy everyone's "extra" weapon. They are completely worthless but are really expensive. F#*k the world and i'll complete it later.

How can you say that Chris Schmell!

How can you say that the game is awesome when you haven't even seen it yet. Don't you realize that by rating the game so highly before you have actually had a chance to review it, you are in effect, bossting the sales of the game. If the game's sales are boosted inapproporiately, then the manufacturer will think that they created a good game. This means that future games that they create may not be very good because the baseline for criticism was ignorant!! In other words, every review that is unfounded, hurts the quality of the game industry as a whole and keeps better games from coming out! Keep it to yourself if you have no idea!!

sc2 is a really good game but after you beat most of the game it isnt much fun anymore.yet there are some flaws like that nightmare needs more cool moves or ivy with that stupid chain sword can basically defeat anyone because if you try to get close to her she just hits you with that sword and knocks you back.if the game is set on hard its impossible to beat her because if you cant get close enough to hit her and keep the offense she will whip the sword at you the entire match.also i think 2 player stinks because i like fighting stratigically like doing lots of combos or something but usually people just hit you wit the weapon over and over, and you cant do anything but hit and block and when there are a billion moves you can do on that game it gets old.story mode is ok but after you beat inferno the second time its all downhill because basically you just buy stuff and get character profiles by beating arcade mode and after that theres not much to do thats fun unless you delete the game data and restart which isnt much fun.the other thing is that when you get the unlocked characters you cant see the move list.but it is one of the best sword fighting kind of games there is so if your one of the sword-fighting type then you should get it.

Freaking cool!

This game is awesome. If you are any kind of fan of fighting games from avid to beginner you will love this game. While most fighting games only give you half a game this has it all. Great graphics, as good as dead or alive series, the movements and character detail are exceptional. There is nothing like the feeling when you pull a really cool combo and then see yourself standing there looking like the victor. Also the stages are very well done but dont draw the attention away from the fight. Then there is the rest of the game. As most fighting games have an arcade, time attack, survival, and some versus battling this one does also. Though that is only the basics then there is the weapon master mode. This is like a storyline to follow by going to different stages and battling. To keep it even more challenging it gives you handicap games like when you are poisoned or your opponent has a team and such. It is very fun and challenging. It gives you enough to play for months of replay. I found that once i went through the game I just went back to try and unlock all the extras. And are there extras. With weapons out the wazoo for all the characters. Also many new characters and some from the first game. Including spawn who is extremely cool with his axes and saying "your pissing me off" after every battle. Still there are more extras. with art gallerys and demo battles which show the glamor and the sensuality of the game which is in very good taste. This is a must buy that will remain next to your x-box for a while.

SOUL CALIBUR 2, REVIEW NUMBER 2

I wrote a review on november 9th, 2002 after I had played it for the first time at a friends house. But, for some reason beyond me, only bought the game very recently. I wish I was still punching myself for not buying it sooner. I had'nt reallised all the other stuff! You know, that review was only from playing multiplayer at a friends house, and I still said it deserved a ten, rather then the 5 star max that the site offers, wich onestly, dose'nt suit the games buffness.

It's the only fighting game I own, but it's buffness has spurred me to try others, like MK, or DOA, or esspecialy, Tekken seeing as how it was made by namco, the creater of soul calibur. At first, there was only one reason I wanted to get it. Ivy. Christmas on a cracker is she hot! And it was'nt just her, pretty much every woman in sc2 is hot, Talim, Seung Mina, you name it, there hot.

I would recomend Ivy as a starting character as well. She's got a nice flow, good attack, and very powerfull, but easy to learn combos. I would have to recomend Talim for weapon master though. She's got a very fast attack wich can get you out of a pickle with alot of tough bosses. And for multiplayer, xiaun ghua, god, I hope I selled that right. All you have to do is get close, and just constantly, do a barrage of kick, vertical, and horrizontle attack in no purticular order, and your friends will be flailing there controllers down to the floor, screaming in frustation.

And going back to weapon master, its what makes this game grate. Giving it a story line, leaning flavor to when your trying to finsh it at 2 o'clock in the morning, and, as the name of mode might suggest, unlocking weapons for your character. Also, weapon master is the only way you can unlock new characters. Not that thats a bad thing. Also, if your having trouble with an inperticular character, play weapon master with them. It will get you well atunned to them.

Overall, sc2 should be a part of any xbox collection. But don't let that disgurish you from buying it if you have a ps2 or gamecube, im shure it's great on those systems too.

Decent, however....

I disagree with some who have labled this, a mindless button masher, however, my key dissappointment with this game was that there was too much text to read and not enough areas of animated sequence. For myself, [edited] from ps one still rules the roost. I am surprised that no one has mentioned this great title in the reviews. Part of the fun of each character was watching the video clip at the end. What I liked about [edited] was the different fighting styles. It required a lot of strategy, this game lets you get a lot more slack as a button masher.
