Yeah this is a great fighting game but...

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 21 / 24

I guess I'll get the bad out of the way right now. This is the -exact same- game that was released on the Dreamcast back in 2000. There are no graphical enhancements, no sprite upgrades, no added effects, nothing at all. So if anyone says that this is "the best looking 2D fighting game", they're either somehow stuck in 1998-2000, or are just lying to themselves. So if you already have it on the DC, there's no point in getting it on the Xbox or even the ps2. But of course, we all know that graphics don't make the game, fun does. Is Marvel vs Capcom 2 fun? You bet your muppet-ass it is. I'll say that this is my third favorite 2D fighter I've ever played- right behind Capcom vs SNK 2 EO and Guilty Gear X2 #Reload. Marvel vs Capcom 2 (I'll just use MvsC2) is the standard by which all 2D fighting games should be presented as.

You don't have to be a fighting game fan to enjoy MvsC2. The gameplay is so simple while having depth, that you can master a character in no time. You start out by selecting 3 characters of your choice to make a team. During fights you can have them assist you at pratically any time with the trigger buttons to do some damage. What's friggin' awesome is when you have all 3 members help out and do a super move at the same time, dealing heavy damage and maybe even taking the opponent out. Watching Chun-Li, Wolverine and Cable take down Spider-Man when swinging at me with his web is classic. He didn't know what hit 'em. But don't think the computer won't do the same to you. Even on the easy setting with the game difficulty all the way down (you can pick easy while selecting characters, and tone the difficulty on the options menu), the AI will have fun with you here and there. That's the basic premise though. There aren't tons of different combat settings like in CvsS2EO, you just pick your guys and go fight through 7 rounds and then the final boss and that's it. Of course, the majority of fun will be found in the 2 player mode. I may not do online gaming, but it is a shame that Marvel did away with the Live gameplay. This game would probably be the top fighter for that reason alone since it's basically the most popular fighter of the past few years. People still play it at arcade tournaments today in America. Oh well, you'll still have fun with it on your own or against a friend.

For some added replay, you earn points through the main game and even practice that can be used in the game's shop. Here you can buy characters (as wrong as that sounds), different colored costumes for them and a few pictures for the art gallery too. It's a nice little addition, but the art gallery isn't on the same page as say Soul Calibur's. You'll have to get tons of points if you want to have all 56 characters in the game though. Definately pick up whoever you know best from previous games first. Except maybe Chun-Li. Capcom decided to change her moves. She no longer has the Spinning Bird Kick for some reason, which was about 1/3 of her use. You'll just have to adjust and figure out new combos with her. Hey, it'll make you better at future SF games. Not all the SF guys are here though. Who really should've been included was Blanka. He would've fit in perfectly. The only problem with this feature is that the chance of getting different characters is very slim. I had to play through Arcade mode at least 20 times before IronMan showed up. M. Bison, Dhalsim and Charlie seemed to want to be bought first. And even after buying them, I had "sold out" in the character slot for a long time before anyone new showed up. Needless to say, this got annoying. I guess Capcom wants you to buy more than just characters. So go ahead and buy the alternate colors and stages after every character or two to even it out a little.

Like I already stated above, this game isn't anything special graphically. Sure the sprites are animated well, but they really could've used an upgrade. They're not as badly pixelated as those in CvsS2EO, but they're missing some details here and there. A lot of time was went into the animation moves and supers. Then again, after finally seeing Thanos in action, I laughed for minutes just looking at him walk. His head stays in the same place while walking. Like, the rest of his body has movement, but his head slides along with it without any animation of its own. That's just lazy programming. Some of the 3D effects for moves look a little weird. Cyclops' Otpic Blasts don't fit in very well unless they're being used as a super move. You won't notice it that much unless you're nit-picking like me. It's still a good looking game for when it was released. You can tell the developers were having fun when making this (ie- Amingo's throws). Backgrounds are beautifully done for a 2D game and nothing looks bad. I particularily like the backgrounds found in the last boss fight.

Unfortunately, the music is terrible. Well, for a fighting game that is. I don't know what they were thinking here, and I agree with a previous reviewer, claiming that this has "Charlie Brown music". A lot of it sounds like that, and some of it sounds like lounge jazz. This is not the soundtrack a fighting game, especially of this caliber, deserves. Where are some of the Marvel cartoon tracks? Where are some of the old SF tracks? Not here, that's for sure. You're probably better off just turing the game music all the way down and playing your stereo at medium/low volume while the voices and sound effects play over it. MvsC2 really could've used a custom soundtrack option. At least the voices are good. Each character's voice fits them perfectly, and the voice actors did a good job. Captain America sounds proud and bold while announcing his special moves or encouraging his team mates. Wolverine sounds just like he did in the X-Men animated series. And the SF characters have the usual voices you hear in the recent SF installments. Oh and if you're wondering, yes, MegaMan still sounds like a girl. I guess he's in a rut at this point. At least he has Rush at his side to make up for that.

All in all, MvsC2 is a fantastic fighting game. But in today's world of Guilty Gears, it just isn't as pretty as it used to be. I'm only taking one star off of the overall rating because it's a straight port of the DC version. I chose this over the ps2 version for one big reason- better controls. If you don't use arcade sticks, you'll know that the Xbox's controller is bettter for fighting games because the d-pad doesn't have seperate directional buttons. This makes fireball motions much easier. And that's a huge factor because a lot of the fighters have that motion for their special moves. If you can find this today, pick it up. But don't pay the insane prices here on the Used & New section. You can easily find it for about 2/3 of that at any game store in the used section. I know because that's where I got mine just yesterday. ZING.

The ultimate fighting game - period

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - New Age Of Heroes (2000.) The fourth game in the "Marvel characters versus Capcom characters" series.

Over the years, there have been a ton of fighting games, but as the years progressed, it became evident that one company was the supreme mastermind of the genre - Capcom. When they released Street Fighter II in 1991, it revolutionized fighting games and was frequently ripped off. Capcom used the excellent mechanics behind that ever-so-successful series to launch spin-offs like Street Fighter Alpha, as well as other fighting series, including Darkstalkers. The corporation even made a fighting game featuring Marvel comics characters which was well-received. And then, Capcom did one of the smartest things of their entire career - put Marvel and Capcom characters together in the same fighting game! This started with the classic X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, which was followed up my Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, which greatly expanded the Marvel roster. And then came Marvel Vs. Capcom, which greatly expanded the number of Capcom characters available. The fourth game in this Marvel and Capcom series, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - New Age Of Heroes, arrived in 2000. Read on for my review (and sorry about the long introduction.)

We'll start off with what this game does good. The absolute best part of this game is the sheer magnitude of characters you can play as. Once they're all unlocked, you'll have over fifty characters! And you've got the all-stars from both universes. Capcom serves up classic Street Fighter characters like Ryu and Ken, along with Darkstalkers favorites Felicia and Morrigan, and even Mega Man! Capcom's got a ton of their most popular characters too, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and pretty much all of the X-Men. The game even features new characters from both franchises. Unlike the first Marvel Vs. Capcom, which played pretty crappy with console controllers, this time around the scheme was done AROUND the controller, so it plays WAY better than its predecessor. The 128-bit backgrounds look GREAT. The soundtrack's catchy, too, even if some beg to differ. The system used for unlocking characters/stages/outfits/etc. is also well-done. You earn points every time you play, and these can be used to buy the bonus features. For the most part, the game takes everything from the original Marvel Vs. Capcom, and improves it. There is very little wrong with this game. If you liked the original, you're probably going to like this one even more.

As much as I like this game, I do have a few complaints. The one that seems to get the most attention is the characters being drawn at a low resolution. Why did Capcom do this? The backgrounds are simply stunning, so I really think a little more work could have gone into the character models. Likewise, too many characters have been altered too much - Chun Li, Sakura, and M. Bison have been altered so much that they aren't even fun to play as. Likewise, many of the characters are just weak when compared to others - Roll is just pathetic and essentially comes off seeming like a "poor man's version of Mega Man." The new characters were unnecessary. Though cool, their omission would have allowed for other great Marvel and Capcom characters to be in the game - I'm sure plenty of other gamers would have liked to have been able to play as Daredevil, Dr. Octopus, The Punisher, Bass, and Proto Man. My biggest complaint is that the game is no longer in production - they don't make Dreamcasts anymore, and for reasons only god knows, the Playstation 2 and XBOX versions were produced in limited quantities. Still, these flaws can ultimately be neglected. For everything this game does wrong, there are about ten things it does right.

My final verdict is simple. If you like Capcom's fighting games, this is a must-buy. It's my favorite fighting game of all time, and you'd be a fool not to buy it if you're into the genre. Capcom knows good fighting games, and this is as good as they come. It's tough to find due to the poor distribution, but trust me - it's worth hunting down.

Fun game, but be patient!

Marvel vs Capcom 2 for Xbox is a great game, but be patient. It takes a while to unlock all of the characters, and it also a pretty rare game. If you can find it for under $50, BUY IT!!! I bought mine for $36 pre-owned. (since they stopped making this game, everyone is buying it and selling it for bogus amounts!!)

First Came Dreamcast, Now Rulez Xbox

I just (again) finished playing this game for Dreamcast, and cannot say just how much fun this game is. It is DEFINITELY my favorite 2D fighting game, and argues to be my favorite fighting game of all time!

It's too bad the Xbox version keeps getting pushed back, hoping this 03/12/03 is the final date. Pre-Ordered it!

To get things correct, the game features 56 fully-playable characters (Unlike First MvsC), and unfortunately, from what I've heard, Online Play may be getting cut out. I'm hoping not, as I want this WAY over MvsSNK2!

This game 0wn3d on Dreamcast, and will DEFINITELY wear out a few Xbox controllers as well!

HIGHLY recommended, and to those of you that care, this is NOT a blood n' guts fighting game. No Fatality type gameplay, simple fun, arcade (60's Batman TV style contact graphics) fighting!
03/10/03 Edit: Okay, another Set-back. .now I see a release date of April 03, 2003. . .Yikes!
Anyhow, Definitely NOT going to support Xbox Live, I've found out.

One of the best games ever!

This game is SO Awesome!!!!!!! There are 56 characters to unlock, possibly the highest amount so far, and each of them has two super moves. In order 2 unlock extra characters and stages, you have to go to Arcade mode and beat it (or quit) or go into training mode, cause the longer you leave your video game system on training mode, the more points you get. A good trick would be to leave your VGS (video game system) on training mode overnight with the TV off, then when you wake up the next morning, quit and you will have TONS of points.
Anyway, if you have a PS2, an Xbox, or a Dreamcast, GET THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!

Solid, rare fighting game with few disappointments

Being a rare game, this one is sure to cost a bundle, but DO NOT SPEND MUCH MORE THAN $40.00 ON THIS GAME!!! I enjoy this game's 56 characters and it's challenging gameplay, but I can't see paying $60.00+ for a port of a dreamcast game, nno matter how rare it may be (I got it for $24.95 at my local used gaming vendor).
First off, if your'e a street fighter or marvel comics fan, this game should pretty much fulfill all your wildest marvel on capcom fantasies. I.E: Juggernaut, Zangief & The Incredible Hulk all on the same team!!! With over 56 such fighters, your character needs are sure to be quencehed.
Another plus: Nearly all of the characters(save for goofy characters like say, Amingo, a giant cactus-man)are pretty well-balanced, so you're covered in that area. Also, as I said before, the game is quite challenging, even on some of the lower difficulty settings (gamers new to the fighting genre need not apply!).
The replayability is excellent, as it can take months to unlock the missing characters, plus an alternate color and a gallery picture for each character.

My only regrets:

No one can hide the absolutely TERRIBLE soundtrack in this game. No matter what any other reviewer may say, I can guarantee that you will NOT enjoy the music of this game, with its repetitive jazz and boring vocals.
In fact, one of the reasons I bought this game was to hear all my favorite street fighter melodies, (such as Guile, Ryu, and M. Bison's themes) but I was extremely dissapointed to find none of them here. What were the creators thinking? This was one of the most immemorable soundtracks of any video game ever!!!

Now that that's past us, let's finally move on to the graphics.
You will probably hear that this game has crummy graphics, it's true, but it seems to fit the teme of this game; the marvel characters are sort of cell-shaded, (Windwaker and XIII have this look) creating a true comic-book feel for those characters, and I'm used to the street fighter characters not having the best graphics either, so I'm alright with that.
Aside from those, the backgrounds are well done, considering they were made in 2000.

Ultimately, it's up to you whether or not you want to make such an expensive commitment to this game. I would recommend this game to anyone who considers themself an intermediate fighting game player, or a hardcore street fighter & Marvel fan.

Must Have Fighting Game for Fighting, Capcom, and Marvel fan

This is a great game to own. I loved the gameplay and the addictiveness due to unlocking characters and just the game itself. But it started to get kinda repetitive after a week or two. Many of the characters were just clones of one another (Ryu, Dan, Ken, Akuma). There aren't many different modes or things to do, in fact I just spent most of my time playing arcade mode. But aside from that, I like this game. If you are a Street Fighter fan this game contains many of the more popular street fighters and has all of the characters from the first marvel vs capcom. If you are a Marvel fan, this game gives great moves to spiderman and includes many of the X-men (but most importantly CABLE). I think this is a fun game to play with your friends or at a party, but if you want a game that lasts, I suggest you look into another video game.

Single greatest 2-D Fighter EVER,hands down...

This title is the epitome of the 2-D fighting genre. Sure complain about the soundtrack. Complain about the graphics (high quality as they are). The bottom line is that "complaints" about MVC2 are superficial. As a master of the genre, this title has so many levels of complex game play that even the most seasoned player like myself can never truly tame this beast. For instance, anyone who plays the game will learn to do single hyper combos for each member of their team, one right after another. What about the challenge of picking a team that has all aerial hyper combs? Did you know that with a level 5 hyper combo meter (and practice) it's possible to do back to back hypers with a 3 on 1 ender? Ok that last statement was for the hardcore, seriously MVC2 provides hours of game play that you'll never get bored with. The reason this title is so expensive ($60+) is the same reason gold is so valuable. This is a true gem...

This is an old game. My son had it a while back and trade it in. Now he wanted it back. Had to pay more for it this time around but that's to be expected when video games are not in great demand. It was hard to find but Amazon came through and had the best price. I think he learned his lesson and will think twice before trading another game.

I was BEDAZZLED, AWED, AMAZED, and downright ENTHRALLED!!!! ....with the ARCADE MACHINE version of Marvel VS Capcom. Comparatively, the XBOX version [stinks]. I've been reading over the Customer Reviews for this Title, and to be frank, I was wondering if they were all talking about the same game? From the CHOPPY ANIMATION, to the CHARLIE BROWN SOUNDTRACK, and to the CONFUSING GAMEPLAY, this version of Marvel VS Capcom BITES in very possible way. I kept thinking to myself, and finally yelling OUTLOUD, this looks like SEGA GENESIS ANIMATION!!!!!! I just don't see why you would need XBOX capability to feed this crude, elementary, primitive looking game?????? When it comes down to it, I guess I just expected a lot more from an XBOX title. I ended up heading right back down to the Shopping Mall Arcade to play the Arcade Machine version of the game, because I needed a FIX after the XBOX dissappointment. The only 2 good things I can say about this game is that for one thing, they offer a lot of players to choose from, which in the world of the usual 3D realm of 10-12 players is a step up. And 2, my nephews and nieces seemed to enjoy it. Probably, because they weren't alive to endure years of 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit processor TORTURE. To them, these incredibly weak and annoying graphics are something new. However, to me, after investing years of pain and suffering through all the older Atari, Intellivision, Nintendo, and Sega Genesis platforms, this XBOX version of the title Marvel VS Capcom is a step BACKWARDS. I expected more, and was highly dissapointed.
