Before I get to the Tony Hawk's Underground review and tell you how awesome it really is, let me give you a little brief history on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games:

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater - A revolutionary game that basically created the extreme sports genre. So if you play any extreme sports game today, thank Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 - An all around better game that the first. Another addictive classic.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 - They did it again. Not only that, but this was the first next gen Tony Hawk game so the big leap from PSOne to Xbox really made the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series advance to the next level, gameplay wise.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 - A brand new career mode, new tricks and even better gameplay made this a big leap foward that any other Tony Hawk game before it.

Tony Hawk's Underground - Its finally here... The one we have been waiting for, and the best yet! I love the Tony Hawk series. It is my favorite gaming series of all time. The games are just so addictive, and I love mastering them all. I love unlocking everything, beating them tons of times, and finding out all of the secrets in em. So you can tell why this didn't dissapoint me at all. The gameplay is just a big leap foward. Neversoft(the developers of this game) are very talented developers and they keep revolutionizing this series so much so it doesen't get stale and their hard work pays off by the awesome sales of the Tony Hawk series. Well, back to Tony Hawk's Underground information... This game is just incredible. The gameplay is super addictive and revolutionary... Its just all good. You can even get off your board this time and climb up buildings ant other things too! And getting off your board really helps you out in combos too. It makes them really big and you will just keep on racking up the big points! The career mode is just incredible. You don't play as a pro this time. Instead, you play as yourself! You create your self in this game and then you play as him. I created a guy that sorta looked like me. There is also a interesting story this time around. The other Tony Hawk games just had really great gameplay but no real good storyline. This time, you will want to see what happens next in the game during the storyline. And yes, there are many other gameplay imrpovements. The create a skatepark mode is better than before and this is one of the most customizable games around. There is also a very large soundtrack with punk, hip hop and rock songs. So, since you have heard how good this game is, go buy it. Really, its worth it! I wonder what the next Tony Hawk game will be like. If its better than this, it will too incredible...

people... god please. before bashing this game learn to spell at least, I mean come on how can you really take a review seriously from a guy who spells dumb "dum"... please. And i suggest that they play through the game instead of renting it for a day, playing it for an hour, and then coming here and giveing it 1 star reviews. THPS is a good solid series that despite its age continues to live on and produce good solid titles, and this is no exception. and also people if you are gonna bash this game at least explain why instead of saying "ths gam is dum so don by it" =). Over all this is a well made game that deserves a spot on an XBOX owners shelf (not quite next to HALO though). 4/5 stars for lack of online and lack of face mapping)
Hav a goode dey ppl.

Same gameplay, new RPG twist lots of design features

This is the fifth Tony Hawk game and its like no other game in the franchise. First what makes it different is rather than picking a professional skater, you literally create your own skater or chose from pre made skateboarders and partake in the story mode (in the PS2 version you can get your face in the game, but not in X-Box). The story mode is similar to an RPG game in the fact that you wander / skateboard around an area, and certain people you can speak with. These people will give you objectives / goals to complete. Goals that range from collecting parts, five letters making up SKATE, to getting a high score and impressing other skaters or onlookers. Each goal has its own time limit and usually completing one goal leads to more. Unfortunately with all of these goals and talking to people (you can only talk to ones that have goals), it takes away from the freedom / skateboarding element. The goals have little to do with the story itself, which is being a New Jersey skate punk that wants to make it big and travel the world. The story involves escape from "dealers," street gangs, vehicular destruction, cursing, fun mayhem (at least for the X-Box). The second thing that makes this game unique from any other is apart from being able to skateboard, you can now step off your skateboard (black button), run around, jump (A button) and cling to objects to climb them (R button). So now you can climb objects, jump off them to get some major speed on the way down. The game also has some goals where you drive cars, so that is a diversion that adds to the gameplay as well. You improve your skater's abilities in the story mode by performing greater feats, such as getting speed, and jumping a quarter pipe, you will get a better skill at jumping or going down a pipe causing your skater to speed up you will improve your skill at speed. The X-Box version supports your own soundtracks, but you cannot load all your songs into one playlist, you must play them one playlist at a time. With all of this said there are several modes, unfortunately getting through all of the modes is cumbersome. First is the "create a goal" mode, where you first select a skate area you have been to, and the game lets you create a goal by first placing a person to give you the goal, then select a position where the player starts, then selecting the goal you are to accomplish (collecting SKATE letters, COMBO letters, high scores, tricks, and other goals). Also in this "create a goal" mode, you can select the pro skaters! The game has several of the pros like Tony Hawk, Jamie Thomas, Chad Masek and others or your created skater. Making all of these goals makes the game feel a little more like the old Tony Hawk Pro Skater games. There is a create a skater mode, which seems silly to have being that you need to create a skater to start the story mode. Next there is a create a skatepark editor which is very good when compared to past games. There are buildings, docks, full pipes, water, lava, rails, quarter pipes, pools and everything else to make into your skatepark with five themes to chose from. Finally the newest feature is the "create a trick". You can create your own specials from grabs, flips, kick moves and other things. The tricks may only be used as specials though and they can last anywhere from a quarter of a second to two seconds. There is advanced online play as well as you can go online and get skate parks created by other players and challenge people to competitions. Overall, the X-Box game is dropping in price and its not that much different than the other versions for the Gamecube and Playstation 2 so you may want to go with this game because of the custom playlists and online play.

Decent, but could have been better.....

As my title says.....Decent. However, it could have been better, a whole lot better in fact. The graphics are top-of-the-line as is the gameplay, and soundtrack. I love the Tony Hawk games, i really do...but to make a game this short, i can't get over it. It will take you a matter of a few hours to beat, even on hard mode. The whole idea of having a plot was well done, and the non-skating parts didn't bother me at all (although some people hate them), actually i think they give a refreshing non-linearity to the game. The driving is bad i will admit, you could beat the game in the time it takes you to master it.
I gave this game 4 stars because, yes, i did like it. Had it been 5 or 6 hours longer i would have given it 5 stars. The multiplayer is fun as well, and customizing your own levels, goals, tricks, board, and skater is also cool. I would suggest a buy only if you are a serious fan of the previous games. Otherwise, rent or borrow it from a friend.

I was surprised

I thought this game was going to be like the other tony hawk games. Sure those are great but this one is unbelievable! There is really a story line being played throughout the game. you can also get off your board and run and climb on buildings.
Well the graphics arent amazing but once you start playing you wont care. you start off like a regular skate punk and keep playing to become the number one Skater. you really compete to get sponsered by real sponsers! I give this game 5 stars and i think you will too.

Pretty good gameplay...only 10 hours of it

Ok, well, I gave Tony Hawk's Underground only 2 Stars because of the length of the game. I beat this game in three days, and then tried to play more, but it was just boring after you finsihed the game.

On the other hand, The gameplay is smooth, and its a fun game while it lasts. That part deserves about 4 stars.

This is a fun game for a few hours, and definatley deserves a rent or two... but definately not a $50.00 purchase, you'll get bored in less than a week

Warning, This Game Is Not For Claustrophobic People!

Ok This is no skateboarding game, this is a fiesta of cardriving and stupid stunts, not a real skateboarding game. YOu dont have to be the best skateboarder to win, you just have to be the stupidist. Dont believe me? Then how come everything you do is a stunt, not involving skateboarding in anyway, and so dangerous that only an idiot would ever try it. DONT BUY THIS GAME IF YOU WANT TRUE SKATYEBOARDING FUN, instead buy THPS 1, 2, 3, or 4. BUY THIS GAME if you want a bunch of daredevil nonsense.

GREAT, but could be better.

This game rocks. The adventure of becoming a skate pro is exciting and sometimes infuriating. There are some actoin filled missions, and there are some of the same old, same old missions, too. This game is a MUST BUY for any skateboarding fan.

Pretty good!

This game is loaded with a ton of extra cool stuff, like racing cars, hopping off roofs to collect stuff, etc. But the skating part of the game seems like it's loosing it's edge. For instance, you can land a trick off a quarter pipe 20 ft'high on to flat ground perfectly?? And the skate board moves way tooo fast! You will eaily breeze by rails and ramps because it's going too fast! But still the game is good & the levels & missions are awesome even though the skating feels very un-realistic.
