Although Halo was awesome, I'd been wanting a game that was more realistic unlike Halo and other mainstream first-person shooters. I have a military background, so I ordered Ghost Recon on Amazon, but while waiting for it in the mail, I picked up Rainbow Six 3 at my local Babbage's. To make a short story shorter, Rainbow Six 3 has been in the Xbox since long after Ghost Recon arrived.
Rainbow Six 3 has an awesome small arms collection: sub-machine guns, assault rifles and sniper rifles; cool semi-auto pistols like the HK USP. It has several types of explosives you can use like claymore mines, flashbangs and grenades like smoke, willy pete, frags and CS.
The gameplay on Rainbow Six is just plain awesome. It's not Halo where you can jump up and expose yourself and live to tell about it. In Rainbow Six, like in real life, if you get shot in the head once, you die. If you get shot a few times in other places, you are either dead or badly wounded. If you move fast and make noise, the enemy knows you're there. If you move slowly and silently, you are undetected. You are able to use real life tactics like quick-peeking around corners, slicing the pie, dynamic entries into rooms, using your team to cover you while you disable a bomb or secure a hostage. And when the gunfight is on, it's a lot of fun. I repeat, it's a lot of fun.
The controls on the game are very responsive. Once I got the input sensitivity adjusted to my liking, the controls became an extension of my hand. Switching weapons and reloading is easy and takes a realistic amounts of time. The graphics are the best I've seen yet on the Xbox in my small collection of games and the games I've rented. You can see shadows of your enemy as you are approaching corners, if you look at a flash bang as it goes off, you are disoriented for about twenty seconds. The sound on the game is awesome. The gunfire, explosions and other sounds are very realistic. On my home theater system, the explosions were just booming through my subwoofer and rocking the house. The communication between team members is adequate.
Occasionally, a team member may do something stupid like run in front of you while your are shooting at a terrorist. And some of the terrorists occasionally use stupid tactics like the kamikaze charge whereafter they quickly become paper weights. These are small faults that do not take away from the overall gameplay.
I say if you are in the market for a first person shooter or a military style game, Rainbow Six 3 is where it's at.
Not really my taste.

I bought this game expecting a Ghost Recon type game with better graphics and more options. I find; however, that it is not much like Ghost Recon at all. GR requires tremendous patience, and success is largely based on equipping your team properly, and mostly positioning them in strategic locations. With GR you can move almost anywhere you want, and attack targets from any angle. In Ghost Recon you can control any player, but in RB63 you are stuck with Domingo Chavez.
I find that RB63 is more of a shoot e'm up type. Enemies appear seemingly out of nowhere, and you have to shoot quickly. The choices of where to go in this game are much more limited, you pretty much just follow down the assembly line and shoot who pops up. In Ghost Recon one enemy bullet can often kill you, but RB63 is more of a health meter type game.
As for the graphics, I was sorely disappointed. Neither enemies nor your team look very real, and they all move with a skittish, too-fast shamble that looks really odd. Play Ghost Recon, look through your rifle scope, and study the detail on your fellow soldiers. You will see camo patterns, triggers, boot laces, CamelBak, etc. Try that on RB63 and you will see a black, shifting mass with a play-doh face.
I do like the huge weapon selection, and is something I wish Ghost Recon had more of.
My final summation. Maybe it is a fun game, but it's not what I was hoping for.

Unlike its PC counterpart of a similar name, Rainbow Six 3 for the Xbox is much more action oriented. In the PC version, which is also an awesome game, you could take control of up to four teams with several team members on each ala Ghost Recon. The amount of customazation was incredible, you could choose everything that each person had, down to the kind of ammo that they used in their guns. This was a great concept, but you never felt personally attatched to any of your operatives. When one would die you would think nothing of it and just switch to another one. Essentially, there meatbags with guns.
In the XBOX version, you play as Ding (Domingo) Chavez, and always have a team of 3 other people with you. You cannot switch control between each of the operatives, so you become more attached to the character your using. Each of the operatives have different personalities which are actually funny in a stupid kind of way. In the XBOX version, you get to do alot more shooting, mainly because your other teams aren't running through the level gunning down everyone before you have a chance to do a decent amount of shooting. That said, the AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Rainbow Six 3 for XBOX is much better than in the PC version. I remember many times where an entire team would be gunned down by a single enemy because my team refused to attack them until it was too late.
The real draw of this title is the XBOX live play. Basically, if you have XBOX live, you must buy this title because it is easily the best available on live. Voice communication makes you more involved with your team and allows for efficient communication and an unparalleled level of realism (nothing spoils the realism like an "lol" or "lmao" right in the middle of a level). I reccommend that you get the game, you will not be dissappointed.

Ok, the misisons do stink, but playing online with/or against friends is one of the best games ever. Forget Counter-Strike online...This tops it off. It's always new everytime you play online, becuase the people are differn't so are the stratagies. If you have Live, get this...but if you don't, it's a waste of $$$$$$
Pretty good game

This game was actually pretty good, its right up there with Ghost Recon. The only thing i hated about this game(and why it wont get 5 stars) is that there was no split screen co op mode like in Halo or Ghost Recon. Still a very good game but u may want to rent it first.
Just OK

Speaking for single player mode only... While not terrible, I wouldn't say it's great by any means. This is supposed to be a covert action type of game, yet there's nothing covert about it. Most of the time, the terrorists always seem to be camping for you. Then other times, they're incredibly stupid, and will walk right out in front of you after you just got done shooting at them, like they had some sort of short term memory loss. As far as I can tell, it makes no difference how stealthy you try to be... Using suppressed weapons is pointless, because the bad guys will see you just as much, and they will still react the same. This forces you to go blowing through each level using nothing but firepower, which no covert team would ever do behind enemy lines, unless all else failed. Unlike Splinter Cell (the ultimate spec ops game), you never see the bad guys engaged in any kind of real human activities. 90% of the time, they are either standing in one place, mumbling the same 6-8 things, or shooting at you. I find this very unrealistic, as you would not find people being at attention 100% of the time. The beauty of Splinter Cell is how human it is, and how it makes you think. It also heightens your senses with excellent music and sound effects. Though Rainbow is supposedly built around the SC engine, you would never know. There's some mediocre strategy movements you can make with your team, but that's about the most intellectual stimulation you will get with this. In the end, Rainbow becomes a fairly decent target shooting game.
If you just want to shoot at people... Go for it. If you want to have to use your brain, this isn't the game.
Overall Greatly Satisfying

I have had this game now since Saturday - November 8, 2003 - and three days later I am already trying to figure out how to complete the last level/mission. So one can see it's a little short, althought it features 14 missions. Having played Rainbow Six 1 and Rainbow Six 2, i really looked forward to this installment. I download the Demo to the PC version, which has better visuals and more controls options - obviously, because one has much more buttoms to utilize. In all the previous version one could switch between the character and one could select a team of four out of 10+ characters. This option is now gone. One is now stuck with Domingo "Ding" Chavez throughout the game, and once he dies the game is over, one cannot change to another character and continue. Mission planning is also gone. And so on, so basically the Xbox version is a stripped-down version of the PC version - I am aware that they are not the same game, but they are close, both have been released this year.
The Xbox version is great nonetheless, but after seeing the PC version a little dissappointing. This game has great features over other and previous version of it. One has a great multi-player, but unfortunately only via System-Link, or Xbox Live. And this is the second game - S.W.A.T: Global Strike Team being the first - to issue the ability to utilize a headset in order to bark close to 90 commands at your CPU teammates - single player mode. Physics are nicely done, especially the rag-doll effect, which has been improved over the latest PC version. Rainbow Six 3 also features trademark Tom Clancy storyline and very nicely done cutscenes with excellent cinematography - for a video game. After completing a mission one can customize a mission for that map and one then has the ability to choose from doing a "Practise Mission" - just practicing that mission and "Terrortist Hunt" - having the selected map and just doing it with your squad and basically clearing the map of hostile occupation.
Overall a well-made king; king of Xbox Live; 4 3/4 Stars; 95%.
Best Addition to date.

Rainbow Six 3 is the best addition to the library of Clancy games thus far. The graphics rival Splinter Cell's, and on some parts i think they are better. Lighting is beautiful, as well as environments and character models... Much better than the Ghost Recon graphics. The gameplay is very easy to get the hang of, but if you want to really master the game you will have to put in a lot of time. The tactical element is definitely there. With every room you enter you will need to read the situation, consider your options, and take the necessary actions for keeping yourself and your team alive (not to mention the hostages).
Giving commands to your team even without the headset is a breeze. I love the Zulu Go Code. It is a huge asset when entering rooms with more than one entrance, and ensures everyone a greater chance of survival. The control scheme is simple and allows you to utilize everything you need to without any hassle. The only complaint i have is that it takes too long to pull out a grenade and throw it during one of the many fast-paced firefights. Aside fomr this everything is perfect. The game itself is very realistic, as two or three well placed shots will kill you every time (unless of course they shoot you in the head, thats an instant kill). The difficulty level of the game is a bit high, even on easy mode.
One of the best things about the level design is that none of the environments or levels are repetitive in any way. With every house, back alley, room, office, hallway, rooftop, sewer pipe, garden, courtyard, and forest (well sort of) that you enter...you will never see the same set-up twice. The AI is very, very smart and uses anything and everything possible for their benefit, as you will also be doing (if you want to live). They will try to flank you from behind, attack in groups when possible, throw grenades, shoot blindly around corners (without showing themselves), and basicly do anything they cant to prevent you from succeediing. This means you will have to be accurate and fast in hostage situations. The other 3 elite killers on your team are also a very long ways from stupid and will execute tasks such as "Open and clear", "open, frag and clear", "Breach door and clear", and many other commands without putting themselves at any unecessary risk.
Most games claim to have varied gamepley, but Rainbow Six 3 uses different types of it better than any game i have previously played: It delivers the element of fast, furious firefights very well. You will also need to use stealth and refrain from killing on some missions. Sometimes you will have to assume a sniper's role...but it is still all based on the strategic and tactical gameplay this series is known for.
Your basic objectives will be one of a few things on every mission. It could be to simply clear a building or area, but usually you will defusing bombs, rescuing hostages and defectors as well as escorting them to safety (NOT an easy task), eliminate certain people, tap phones, hack computers for documents, and find physical evidence to link crimes together for your intel squad.
The online multiplayer is awesome. There is, of course, a deathmatch mode where you kill eachother which is made very interesting by the fact that only 2 or 3 shots will kill you , which means you wont waste a whole M16 clip on your friend only to have him run away before you can reload and later have him nail you in the head. The cooperative is also very fun because, although your AI teammates are smart, they arent quite as gifted as humans at, well...thinking. It opens up many more options for how to approach any given mission.
Well im sick of typing so thats all im going to say, but everyone who has the Box should own this title. It rocks.
my favorite tom clancy game yet

This game is by far my favorite Rainbow Six game yet. It's graphics are superb and the gameplay is awesome. One of my favorite things about it is if you have the headset, you can give orders to your squad verbally. For example, if you pointed your gun at a door and say "open and flash", then your team will open the door, and then throw a flashbang grenade in. I would give this game 4.8/5 stars because there are a few things that were better in the other Rainbow 6 games. Such as: You can only be one person (Ding) and if you die the mission is over. Also, you cant plan what your team will do personally. On the bright side, the graphics are excellent, almost like Splinter Cell's (Almost) and there are 50+ weapons to choose from, anything from flashbang grenade to desert eagles to antitank rocket launchers.
One thing may slow you down though: it's M rating thats what I thought but when I played it there was only a tiny bit of blood and no gore that I could see. I would have rated it T.
Good single player, AMAZING multiplayer

This is a very good game. It takes a lot of thinking and strategizing to complete your missions. Also, you can peek around corners to see if anyone is there without getting shot and killed. You can also command your team to open doors and clear rooms, or open doors and throw grenades in the room. You can toggle a "ZULU go code", which means that you can have your men wait at a door until you say GO. The Xbox Live/System Link multiplayer is phenominal. There is almost no framerate problems(every game has some framerate problems), and it is fun to strategize and attack with other humans, instead of AI(the computer). If you like first person shooters, do yourself a favor and pick up one of the BEST first person shooters around.
