Jedi Academy brings Jedi Outcast's gameplay to the XBox

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

This is a fitting sequel to Jedi Outcast...and you get to start with your saber this time! Since I'm not a kid I don't play with action figures anymore. Instead I play the current crop of extremely inspired SW games, like this one.
If you learned anything about how to face enemy Force-users in the previous game, that knowledge will help you here. You can customize your selection of Force powers ( for me, it's usually Heal, Protect, Grip, Lightning, Drain ). In a similarity with KOTOR, you can make a crucial choice which leads to a Dark Side ending. This allows you to kill Kyle Katarn if you're so inclined; don't expect him to put up much of a fight. He's like Obi-Wan in AOTC. (It seems that when a Jedi gets into the Master role in the Master-Padawan situation, their saber skills start to really suck.)
My suggestion for places like Taspir III: GRIP. THROW. REPEAT.

This game, like its predecessor, can be a real pain...leading to the urge to save the game at every turn. I don't consider that kind of gameplay to be cheating, just overly cautious.
LIGHTSABER COMBAT, ESPECIALLY AGAINST DUAL OR DOUBLE-BLADED SABERS, CAN BE SEEMINGLY ARBITRARY. I put that in caps because I don't want anyone thinking there's some kind of overarching theory of combat in this game thru which any opponent can be systematically handled without fail. You're going to get killed. A LOT. I suggest using Force Grip against tough enemies with advanced saber styles, because after you release the Grip, you'll see that the enemy will be standing there, seemingly not in combat, with their saber(s) deactivated.
I feel like mentioning that the XBox at some point rearranged the save-game files so that I have to scroll through pages of old files before I get to the ones I want...oh well.

If you're into practicing all kinds of new moves, the game allows special moves for the new saber styles as well as run-up-the-wall Matrix-type stuff. I don't know if the Matrixized Star Wars atmosphere in this game appealed to the public at large, but I thought it was fine. You see, impossible moves make sense in TWO situations:
1) You're in an artificial reality; or
2) You have the Force so you can really pull off that ****.

And although I've played a Hoth level in almost every SW game other than KOTOR, the Hoth level in this game is somehow more refreshing.
My character is a cool-looking Rodian with an orange saber ( to be different from any major film character ) and an outfit that looks as though a Republic TPM-era guard is starting to consider becoming a Sith...if that makes any sense. Gotta go. And when you gotta go, you gotta go.
(Later) One more thing...don't expect Lightsaber Defense to work as insanely well as it did in Outcast. You'll get shot.

Could have been much better but still enjoyable

I am a huge star wars fan. So this game has far more replay and overall value to me than it would for the average gamer. If you are a fan too, you may also be overly critical of this game and enjoy it at the same time (typical star wars fan mentality).

All reviewers (pro or am) should know there facts before attempting reviews. There are no flaws in the plot as the Imperial Remnant is around long after the final Star wars movie. Being a fan, I can excuse some of the supposed flaws. "Poor AI" can be considered poorly trained dark Jedi that have been infused with more dark side power than they can control and every fan knows Storm Troopers have bad aim, etc, etc. This game should be taken for what it is, a smaller budget sequel to Jedi Knight II that has put all its chips in the lightsaber aspect of the game.

Yeah, it could have been much better, but I still enjoy it. With not many good games coming out until later this year, this could be a good buy for you and a definitely one for a fan.

Cons
-The graffics engine is old, same as JN2
-The storyline is not as good as Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
-The game is also shorter than the previous title
-On Xbox LIVE the Seige mode always "lags" with over 6 players and lagging is somewhat common on deathmatch styles as well.

Both
-LIVE matches are made up of a far lower average age than other games.
-much less "puzzle" missions

Pros
-Improved lightsaber and Jedi combat. Staff Saber/daul sabers and many acrobatic moves.
-Choice of force powers, light or dark (8) and core force abilities (4).
-Custom characters
-Its the best Star Wars lightsaber action you can get for the Xbox or PC.

GOOD GAMES GONE almost BAD

I haven't played a game in the Jedi Knight series since the originals which will always be my favorite games to play. Recently I bought an X Box and thought I'd see how the story and gameplay held up. At first it seemed really good, considering you could pick your species, clothes, etc. .... also the advantage of having to choose your lightsaber color, hilt and style were all surprising high points in the game. Once again the "video game acting" is very poor and corny, but the story followed well. It had many obvious twists in it, but it kept you entertained. The graphics and levels were all very different, vert realistic, and stunning. Another high point while playing. I was also very excited when the time came in the game where your character got to take the controls behind a swoop!!!! Enemies such as the rancors were a different pace and enjoyable to destroy. The only major down point to the game...why I only gave it three stars.....was the amount of jedi and sith there was to defeat. In the original jedi knights you only fought a few lightsaber battles..in some cases such as the first game...you didnt even have a lightsaber. I was glade to see you constantly had your trusty lightsaber on had to fling, throw, and block in times of need, but i found that i never put it away. Around every corner there was someone else swinging a colorful lightsaber blade in your face. I never got to use or try any of the other weapons...which are all very fun to play with...because there was sith all over the place. Not always easy to beat..and you can only use a saber to kill them. And it seemed liked i just killed the same person over and over again for an hour straight when i was done playing. Aside from the over population of lightsaber duels the force powers seemed a lot easier to use, and a lot cooler. Powers such as force lightning, force protect, force absorb, and force drain were all great fun to experiment with on your enemies and a change from some of the more typical powers from previous SW games. Overall i did enjoy the game, and say the story, graphics, settings, characters were all complete, and aside from killing massive amounts of sith lords with the same one weapon...it was a game worth playing.

.....one more thing to add was the infamous bounty hunter himself Boba Fett makes a cameo in the game, which i found untrue to the story line. SINCE GEORGE LUCAS MEANT HIM TO DIE IN EPISDOE VI NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS.

-and i though it was a relief that the games story line gave you an opportunity to create a new lightsaber in the middle of the game....you could choose the color, hilt..duel sabers, single blade, or double blade all over again to switch up pace..another high point...enjoy!

This game was a disappointent to say the least. The play control leaves a lot to be desired and the storyline is weak. If you are interested in this game you might want to try it out on the PC which offers better control.

Definently a Good Game

This seemed, for the most part, an upgraded version of Jedi Outcast. It has all the same force powers and all the ranged weapons except the addition of the concussion gun. I liked trying the different lightsaber blade styles and enjoyed all the old force abilities, such as grip and lightning. I found that the missions were fun and entertaining though the first missions were seemed corny, but they got better. It is Live enabled, which should be required for any game these days, and I am sure it will be a popular. The graphics seem actually a little outdated, but the gameplay is great! This should be bought by anyone with an Xbox, even if you're not a Star Wars fan. After you complete the game you probably will be a Star Wars fan! I give it 5 stars! Its a good un'!

this game is not bad. Its is not as good as Jedi outcast but it matches up. The sound is good and hte praphics not bad at all. The only thing soo far is the enemies are kind of dumb. they don't move or anything soo far of what i have played bu that is really the only thing wrong. You can pick yuor race, gender, and the neccessities for your lightsaber. You have the same powers as in Jedi outcast with one extra i think it is sense power. You get to have two sabers and a double bladed saber which is really cool. have fun with this game.

this is by far the best game i have ever played. the normal mode rules as you start of training with kyle katarn, to hard missions on tatooine. the lightsaber combat is so great you feel like a jedi. the multiplayer mode or the jedi arena is incredible, i love picking the dual sabers blue and green with using luke so it reminds me when anakin fought count dooku in episode 2. this review tells it all, if you are or are not a star wars fan, either way you should buy it. the story is great.

Great Star Wars Game!

(...) I thought it was a great game! The graphics are great so was the sound. I found the controls easy to get used to and the game play in general was intuitive. Obviously this game is basically a 1st/3rd person shooter so of course you aren't going to have the character design abilities that you had in KOTOR. But that isn't what this game is about. This game is about Kickin' some butt! I felt the force powers were also very well done. The only thing that I could complain about was some of the jumping abilities could get in the way and cause your character to accidentally run along the wall instead of flipping off of it or something like that. But really this game was awesome!

GREAT GAME!!

When I first got this game for christmas I was thinking oh-no because I had played it before on PC and it wasn't that fun. Well when I played it on X-Box I had a really fun time playing it. From just joining the academy to killing your friend. This game is really fun.

Pros: The levals are cool. The lightsabers are cool.

Cons: You can't really make your person look like you want him to look like there are only three male human heads to choose from . The graphics aren't the greatest luke sometimes looks like a girl.

All in all this game is good and I recomend buying it.
