As the comic book dude from "The Simpsons" would say, "This is the worst game ever!" and that includes E.T. I was extremely disappointed with this game. Across online game review sites I had seen nothing but great reviews for this game so I had high expectations.
Let's start with the good stuff. It had very good graphics, although body movement was a little blocky, as well as lighting and weather effects, expansive environments which did look a little bit dated for the Xbox, especially the buildings, and I guess a good story line. Ok that was it for the good stuff.
Now the bad stuff:
1. Boring, especially the numerous cutscenes, and what makes it worse is that the game throws in QTE's (quick time events where you have to press buttons as they appear on the screen) so that you can't use the cutscenes for that they are normally used for - bathroom breaks.
2. Working for money was boring, there was no way to get money by performing a task other than moving crates, which was boring and repetitive. Most of the time the D pad didn't respond well to the double and triple taps to the left and right, which made it extremly frustrating.
3. Linear storyline and playing.
4. Way too many load screens, and trivial cutscenes.
5. Only 1 of the 3 sections of game was halfway fun and entertaining and that was the middle section when Ryo was in Kowloon. There was plenty of action and not too many bathroom breaks ... uh I mean cutscenes. The HK and Guilin secions were a bore, especially Guilin. I kept expecting to get to Bailu village and being able to do more of what was done in Kowloon, let's just say that it was a major disappointment.
6. Fixed camera angle, unable to adjust 3rd person camera location to a different fixed position. Ryo took up too much of the screen and in the beginning I got sick watching the screen when Ryo ran.
7. Bad control layout and responsiveness.
8. Command QTE's. Sometimes I was unable to see the order in which the buttons were pressed even when I wasn't even trying to hit the buttons just watch them in order.
9. Ryo's bandaid on his face, it was there throughout the game.
10. Not enough fighting. I'm not a fighting game fan but thats what was the most fun in the game, I found the "free roaming" to be extremely linear and restrictive
... and many more, but the above mentioned were my biggest disappointments. I kept playing because I thought I would this storyline fighting game a chance and I kept expecting the game to suddenly get better, but it didn't. Is there any way I can sue Sega to get that part of my life back that I wasted on this game?
DON'T BUY THIS GAME!!! ... well buy my copy but nobody else buy this game!

I am a big fan of The Shenmue franchise, but I have not played Shenmue II yet. The original game was ahead of its time and even now does not need much improvements. The second one was just recently released in US but I have been reading some bad reviews. Most people are dissing the graphics, saying it is like a Dreamcast game, so what. This game blows, the most stupid game I have ever plaed, Morrowind out of the water. This game has fighting and exploration, and you can also go to the arcade and play older Sega games. The games inlcude Afterburner II, Space Harrier, and you can play darts. The story of this game is great, you are a young man seeking revenge for his father's death. If you like and fighting or roaming RPG you will love Shenmue and Shenmue II.
Awesome Game

This game is a beautiful sequel to the epic Shenmue: Yokosuka. I loved this game because it had the good things about Shenmue 1 incorporated into Shenmue 2. The plot, the free battles, the GTE's(quick timer events)and the constant search for the truth. Although there are flaws in Shenmue 2 they do not affect the gameplay. The backround music is beautiful, the graphics are extrodinary (based on the first Shenmue)and the story plot and events are addictive. You cannot put the controler down!!
Also there is much more of the city to explore instead of the small city in Shenmue 1. This game is great because you are in a different city, and you need to fend for yourself. Instead of getting money everyday from Ine-San, you must work and make a living. You can also gamble and use pawn shops. Although the gambling is fun, you might lose all your money. Also I dont recomend pawning you toys in until you get the higher paying collections. Also use a second person to help with arm wrestling. Have the person tap the A button fast while you press the left, right,up,down buttons (as shown on the screen).
Many people arent playing this game, so there might not be a chance for a 3 chapter of this epic journey. So please everybody out there play and enjoy Shenmue 2!!!

I have finally completed this game and all I can say is that it is amazing. For most people the game would be considered very slow and repetitive, but for those who like a great story this game is for you. I have played through both Shenmue I and II now and all of the story is begining to fit together. The game moves pretty slow at first but when you get to the end of Chapter 3(Hong Kong) there is nearly two hours of non-stop action. This game is definatley worth the money. Most of the areas in this game are gigantic, especially the forest(which takes hours to get through). Alot of the game plays out like a movie instead of a normal game, it is really amazing to see all the camera angles. While this game is not for everyone, fans of the original game will be pleased. Newcomers to the game will either love it or hate it depending on your tastes. It is up to you.
Just as good as the first

As my title ses, it is just as good as the first, but a little better. It takes place right when Ryo arives in hong kong. As soon as you arive, YOU WILL DROP YOUR JAW AT THIS GAME! And now more then 50 people can be on screen. And now more jobs then evar. The freedom in this game is soo big. The graphics are improved, but now cut sceens are in wide screen. And the fighting stays the same, BUT... you lern more powerful moves as the game progresas.
Graphics/9
Sound and voice/9
Gameplay/10
In short, evan if you did not play the first, get this game!

David Waters gave the best review of this game on the site. There is only one he didn't address and that is the graphics. I have never owned a Dream Cast, but I played the first Shenmue over my friend's house. I was amazed at the game. There was nothing like it at the time. I now own Shenmue 2 for Xbox, and I must say it is one my favorite games. My one and only complaint is that they didn't use the Xbox's hardware to its fullest. They just kinda enhanced the Dream Cast grapics. I mean, it looks way better than the Dream Cast, but Xbox is capable of more. Also, I have read reviews saying that if you haven't played the first one, then you probably won't like Shenmue 2. That is absolutely not true. Even if you never heard of it until now and you want a great action/adventure game, don't hesitate to buy this game. Great Review David.

I have played Shenmue on my DC and finished yesterday. It's cool! I recommend playing shenmue 1 before shenmue 2. Everybody said shenmue 2 cancelled for DC. You are wrong. It wasn't cancelled actually. It's only cancelled in US. It relased in europe and japan. I started shenmue 2 on dc after finishing the first one. This game is really detailed. Just play it! But just like i said before if you can play first one play it first than play this.
