This review is both for the X-BOX as well as the PC-version of the game:
You got a weekend coming up? You got some time on your hands? You got a grand supply of Coke and pizza? You got a craving for good horror movies and games? You know how to turn off the lights and turn on your computer/X-BOX? And finally: you got a computer that can actually run this game fast enough (no need to worry here if you have an X-BOX)? Well, then what are you waiting for: get DOOM 3 to have the greatest thrill and chill ride of your life!
Doom 3 is something like TOTAL RECALL (remember Arnold, the Governator, back in his glory days on his mission to Mars?) meets DOOM meets HALF-LIFE meets SYSTEM SHOCK 2.
From the get-go this game simply grips you with its eerie dark atmosphere. And this is the plot: You are a space-marine who just got assigned to a top secret research facility on Mars - very much like an Area 51 in outer space. As soon as you leave the ship and enter the hangar you'll be exploring the base. This part of the game works very much like Half-Life. In a creepy "calm before the storm"-fashion you get to navigate the dark corridors, offices, underground machinery and even the cantina and restrooms. Even though you can't exactly tell what's wrong - you get the feeling that something badly out of whack. Some people (you may choose to talk to) seem to be on the edge. A TV blurs about recent happenings. Data-units and screens give you access to information about Mars, the base, the staff etc. You may even listen in to conversations when you're passing by some people. The level of interactivity is amazing and the claustrophobic spooky tone won't let you go until the very end of this game. There's lots of scripted events as well, which are all well done and do not interrupt the flow and overall experience, at all.
Soon you're given a PDA (That's "Geek" for: Personal Data Assistant), which allows you to collect access codes for doors depending on you clearance level. Even better: you'll come across data discs other workers, guards, scientists or military personnel have left behind and you may use your PDA to listen in to their recordings. It's just plain spooky walking through almost abandoned underground facilities and finding old recordings, in which workers, who were recently here complain about events they cannot explain.
Finally you will get to share experience. And you'll get more of a fair share of problems! First it's just something small like the lights going out in a gloomy stairwell leaving you in utter darkness. Later on, inexplicable things happen around you and before you know it all hell breaks loose. Soldiers turn to Zombies. Creatures from different dimensions walk the deserted hallways of the base. Out of a sudden the darkness around you is not just oppressive but may hide devilish things around every corner. This is where the true action starts.
This is where the game does turn into Doom. But don't expect hordes of enemies in well- lit surroundings that can easily be defeated! The game remains dark and sinister and it will keep you going just because you'll want to see what creepy areas lie ahead and what nightmarish creatures you'll encounter next. Surprisingly Doom 3 remains tense and suspenseful thanks to a real storyline, which has been implemented quite well through the above mentioned PDA's as well as plenty of information you'll witness on various video-screens inside the bowels of the huge Martian base. In time you'll understand why these inexplicable things are happening and - how to stop them.
The graphics are top notch. IF your PC can deal with them. If you do not have the very latest technology on hand you'll be forced to turn down details - and lose a lot of the best FX that make Doom3 so great. The best thing besides the ultra-realistic object-, character-lighting and bump-mapping is the real-time rendering of shadows. If a light bulb swings around inside an old staircase, you'll see shadows of every railing, grating and other object moving across the floors and walls! Freaky! Fortunately you have a flash-light that will soon become your best friend. Unfortunately you won't be able to use it while you have another weapon equipped, but switching is easy - on the whole it makes the already creepy action even more intense. Fortunately all of these features were carried over to the X-BOX! Even though PC-fans may argue that a TV screen simply cannot deliver the resolution of a monitor, think again once you've seen Doom3 on X-BOX on a state of the art wide-screen and dolby surround system! It rocks! It's amazing that the X-BOX can handle the game so very well. Unless you have a state of the art PC you may even want to consider buying an X-BOX just to run this game - it sure is gonna be cheaper than upgrading your PC with a new graphics card! :-)
The sounds are very well chosen and placed. From the humming of machines in dark basements to water dripping into deep shafts to the noise of the wind outside the base and the far-away whistling of ghostly tunes around the starting area of the base - it creates a vision of terrible things around and afoot.
The level design is outstanding! You'll get to appreciate the eerie feeling that something may be lurking around every corner and that whatever is waiting for you there - you can run but you cannot hide in the stuffy claustrophobia-inducing hallways, chambers and ducts. You're gonna explore different parts of the base with plenty of different themes such as: barracks, labs, factory, hangar, reactor etc. but you'll also get to explore the outside of Mars' surface as well as a space station, a hell-like alternate dimension and an underground Martian facility, buried under the surface of the planet for millennia!
The weapons are fairly standard, but they are all a lot of fun to use! From pistols to shotgun, to automatic weapon, plasma gun and rocket-launcher everything is covered. Of course, you'll get a new version of the BFG 1000, too! Last but not least there's a weapon called a soul cube, which is an alien weapon that leeches health from an enemy and uses it to replenish yours. And, boy, does it come in handy later on in the game!
Make sure you PC is up to date - and that your X-BOX power-cord is plugged in :-)
and have the spookiest 15-20 hours of gaming history.
The Reverend.
All hell is breaking loose!

make sure you know that online cooperative does not mean 2 player...i bought this thinking me and my roommate could play together (ie, split-screen), and there is no option for that(except for the doom2 and ultimate doom versions)...this is only a one-player game...

Doom 3 is probobly the best horror game ever created for any gaming console. Although the graphics are better on the PC, you can enjoy the game just as much on the Xbox, knowing that you don't need a fast processor.
I will make this review in PRO/CON format.
PRO:
1.Graphics are amazing/scary at the same time!
2.Audio is brilliant, adds to the horror of the game.
3.Its online!
4.F@#$%$ SCARY!
5.Controls are very easy to memorize/master.
6. Cutscenes are impressive.
CON:
F@#$%$ SCARY!
Online can lag quite frequentely which is annoying.
I know i didn't mention very many CONS in this game, but the online aspect is seriousely an issue. Every game that you go into will lag quite often which is very annoying.
Besides that though, The new horror hit, DOOM 3 is a must have!
The Most successful FPS returns & is better than ever.

I gotta admit when I first put this game in I was not as impressed but the more I played it the better it got .When I first played it I was rushing through the levels with flashlite and shooting everything but not realy looking to much but I gotta say now that Ive played it twice I truly am impressed with this game. There is alot of detail if you look for it. Doom3 is an EXCELLENT FPS Game, with great graphics, and the smooth FPS gameplay. The demons are nicely detailed ,the flying screeming heads look realy kool and all the enemies have a fierceness look to them with glowing red eyes ,very kool stuff. The sound is good especialy the whispers ,it sounds good on my stereo, but some of the guns sound a little weak ,but the ambient sound effects are realy well done the whole game has got a real creepiness to it.The footsteps you can even tell what direction they are coming from .Your first set of demons are possesed slow walking human zombies but that soon changes as the new varied demon creatures will lunge strait at you and they are tougher on the Veteran difficulty. You charachter has a PDA in Doom3, you can download info, email, voice messages, and video clips from certain terminals which all can been read and seen, also you can down load other peoples lost PDA'S and look at there info stored. It helps you find codes for lockers and doors with either ammo, weapons, health,or level advancement. There's plenty of ammo hidden in all areas of the game ,I never found myself too short of ammo. Its there you just go look in every dark area ,corner, nook and crannie. The more ammo you find the more enemies will spawn in .I noticed that if I didnt pick up certain ammo ,or explore certain areas no enemies would spawn in , the more you explore, and the more ammo you find, the more enemies will spawn in. Like for example the plasma storage room with the door code ,if I didnt go in, not as many enemies would spawn but if I found the PDA & used the code on the door ,tons of enemies spawned in.The bottom line is explore everywhere for a tougher game experience, the more ammo you find the more enemies you'll fight. My fav weapon was the shotgun it kills most demons in 1-3 shots, but of course its useless for long range. The plasma gun or the chain gun takes care of the charging big-bull type demon pretty fast. All the weapons work quite well, except for the handgun which should be used only on slow human zombies. Save your shotgun ammo for the demons who charge you & you should always have it handy.Conserve your big weapon ammo for the tougher guys. There's the blood & gore type effets in Doom3 that made doom series a stand out fps and the chainsaw is once again back for gory kills. The lighting is well done with dark hallways and enemies popping out from them and all the trippy looking demonic type writing on the walls looks wild. And I love the way the demons spawn in ,very kool. I find myself jumping (flinching)alot because the sound effects(on my stereo) & the enemies pop at you from out of know where .I like the dream type sequences ,it adds to the tension. This game does a good job of making you feel tense. You cant use your flashlight and your gun at the same time,(what? no friggen duck tape??)which at first is a little annoying but after awhile it does make the game more intense which adds to the effect of the game ,and after awhile you will get so good at switching from gun to flashlite it'll become second nature and besides its a simple one-button switch.white button on default. The first 29 sections your on a station on MARS and its not all just strait forward (linear),many times you'll backtrack to a previously unopenable door for level advancement.Mostly you'll find a door that needs a special key or a code on another persons PDA,you'll then need to find that PDA for the door code. Not to mention you will be fighting plenty of demons along the way. After you leave the Mars Level about 3/4 in the game you get to HELL level its Friggen Intense ! The look of the game comepletly takes a change for the better ,Imagine the whole game with this look ,maybe Doom4 will go that route ,hopefully so.Wait till you get to the HELL level you'll agree its awesome looking, this is what I imagined Doom3 to be.Its really intense you loose your flashlight & all weapons but luckly you will re-stock back up.Also the levels look even better once you leave HELL and go to the caverns levels. Its pretty trippy looking. There's 4 difficulty settings ,RECRUIT,MARINE,VETERAN,& NIGHTMARE MODE. Nightmare mode is only opened up after beating the game and you start the game with the Soul Cube ,you can equip it as soon as you get your first weapon, also your health on nightmare mode slowly drains even if you dont get hurt, but will stop draining at 25.I played the game on Marine mode and beat the game in 3 days, now im on Veteran difficulty.I truly like the game better the second time around ,Im noticing alot more little details. There is a secret Room on the last level just before you fight the last Boss. Its in the cavern level with all the candles in the hallway. You push Id logo on the wall and a secret room opens up and you'll find a PDA from the Id game developers with all the programmers Thank You Notes. Doom3 is a Fun Solid Tension filled FPS Game with decent replay value and Online capability.
Awesome...

yes the storyline is thin but thats only if ur used to pc. this game is very long compared to halo series and max payne series, this game seems about the same length of wolfenstein: return to castle wolfenstein. so in other words for the x box this game is long and the graphics are just a bit below pc but very very good. whoever said that this game is like ps2 is very wrong. the graphics was used to the fullest of the xbox's capabilities which kix ps2's ass.

' E. Berry "zeetwo8 's review below really said it all. Especially how it makes you feel like you're there. This game can be absolutely unnerving to play alone/in the dark (no pun intended on the absolutely dreadful Slater/Dorf/Reid movie). The graphics are absolutely stellar. This is by far the greatest I've ever seen an Xbox game look, and I found this game far more enjoyable to play than either of the Halo's. I was absolutely engulfed from the beginning. When you first arrive on Mars, everything seems to be in order. However, you are slowly presented with hints that something seriously wrong is going on. Then, before you know it, all hell breaks loose. As you progress, you are presented with more and more bugged out (...). If you own an Xbox and haven't already played this on PC, do yourself a favor and buy it immediately.

First off, let me say... this game was nowhere near as good as it was hyped up to be. The first couple of games in the series were incredible, massive amount of enemies, dead bodies lying on the floor, sweet weapons, what more could you ask for? Maybe a decent game on a next gen system.
A decent game is far from what you get, the graphics are good yes, but they aren't any different from what CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY had. All the character's except two (the main character and Kelly) looked the same but with different haircuts. The enemies were nowhere near breath taking, and they repeat far too often. The sound quality of this game is good, but the sounds the weapons make... completely disappointing, the plasma rifle lost its oomph, the shotgun sounds dinky and the BFG...now I wont even get started on that. The thrills used in the game were also very cheaply done, it got to the point where I saw a dark corner, and 9/10 times, there would be an IMP or a dead marine inside the black depths of the shadows. The biggest thing that irked me was how short the game was, I finished it in about a day, I was expecting a long immerse game, and what I got was a dull, annoying bucket of crap. The people at ID could have done better, overall the game isn't worth the $50 dollar price tag, or the close to $60 mark for the collectors' edition. Rent the game before you buy it, you never know you might like it, but I would not risk throwing 50-60 bucks down the drain.

Alright, first I wanna start of by saying it got an overall score of four starts cause I'm only on the tenth level.
This game is a whole lotta fun.
A durn disposible flashlight at your side, you explore the eerie depth of a Mars Research Facility, complete quietness will always be enough to scare you on the spot. You slowly walk toward a door, when you jump out of your seat. You hear a devilish, low voice, cackling in its unearthly tongue. You feel a loud vibration in the controller, and look behind you-what do you see? Alas! An Imp! The monster seen the most in the game. It roars a dramatic roar into the dark sky. What should you do, take out your gun, which you have now realized would take way too long, considering the gun you would have if you took off the flashlight has only one or two bullets left;or should you fight with what you already have out, the flashlight, which would do some damage, but not enough to kill the rascal before it kills you, with your twenty bars of life! What decision do you make? Yes!
You get your remaining pistol, and shoot your two shots. Bam! Bam! The imp shreaks in agony. But it's not dead. It throws an immense fireball at you, and swipes you with its sharp claws. You are dead.
oh, so incredible this game is with that intense feeling of anxiety at every single moment you take. It pulls you in, and like countless reviewers have said, it pulls you into the world of DOOM. It is so clever how they introduce every monster, the first time, and throughout its many apearances. Like the Pinky monster you see in all of the screenshots, mechanical legs, blood-sucking mouth, no eyes. You enter a really small room with a large glass window covering a third of it. You click on something on a computer, and enter a cutscene.
Outside of the small room is the vicous yet cute looking pinky, and tries barging into the room thru a door. The door doesn't break, but everytime the Pinky tries, the door gets mangled more and more. It gives up, and you enjoy a sigh of relief. Everything's safe...or so you thought! It rams into the glass window freely, and begins smashing you. Beautiful. Not seen much in today's games. They add too much boring, never ending gameplay, and forget that, in a way, a video game is an interactive movie, and Doom 3 knows this well, with adrenaline-pumpin' surprises, a thought-provocing plot/story, orchestra-ready music(Exept for the heavy metal theme), and gameplay taken straight from a Vin Diesel or Ah-nuld Shvorztennieger movie, or in the scarier sense, it plays along like an Alien movie more than anything.
Overall, by the time I beat this game, I'll know what I should expect from the ancient (well, about a decade old)art of FPSs.
P.S. Limited Edition, from $55-$60 if you buy it at a store, is well, well worth the price. two entire games maybe even lengthier than the third one are in the Limited Edition, and well...besides expanding the amount of gamplay of this one CD, it's also a buncha fun!
BETTER & SCARIER THAN BOTH OF THE HALOS COMBINED

I just got this game for my birthday and I think it is one of the best games I have ever played. I think the storyline is one of the main reasons it is so scary. The one thing I can say I don't like about this game is the fact that you have to switch between your gun and your flashlight. Other than that, this game is awesome. It has good graphics, cool weapons, creepy monsters, scary levels, and a killer storyline. tHIS GAME IS DEFINATELY WORTH BUYING!!
