This game blew my socks off. It was nothing like I expected, and that's what made it so great. Unlike Super Mario 64, where you must collect enough stars to open doors, find new levels, and collect more stars, this game has practically no limitations. The 'castle' in this game in a tropical town center known as "Delfino Plaza". You start with one level to go to, "Bianco Hills". You can go there, or explore the plaza. Unlike in SM 64, you have many options, without even entering a level. Theres coins to collect in the plaza, stars (known as "Sun Sprites") to find, people to talk to, and if you're lucky, you'll stumble across another level. After collecting 20 or so Sun Sprites, and wandering aimlessly aroung the plaza, I had opened 6 levels. Anytime one level got difficult, I could leave the level, go do something else. It was very easy-going with no formality or objective to stick to. Another plus is Princess Peach is'nt a damsel in distress this game. She just wanders in the center of the plaza, free to talk to you anytime. Also, unlike SM 64, where you're nemesis Bowser does'nt show up till the end, this game has an enemy you see every once in while. The colors of the game are all bright, tropical colors, and the game is just plain fun. One of the best, if not THE BEST Mario game yet.

As of late, Nintendo has been producing some pretty fine games for their Gamecube (Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness etc...) and this may top them all. It takes me back to the days of Mario 64 with the view and moves that Mario can perform, and even though the story may be a little stupid and childish, it's still the same old Mario and the game base is the same as it always has been. After all, gameplay is really what matters in the end.
P.S.: XBox and Playstation 2 owners need to stop hating on the GC and it's games by giving them bad reviews without even playing them just because they're jealous that the certain game only came out for GC and not the console they own

I gave this game to my son for his 10th birthday. He'd played it before on his cousin's Game Cube system & wanted the game when he got his own Game Cube system. This game has many levels of fun, including ones he didn't know about until accidentally found. He can go back & redo the levels too, even after getting the initial Shine Sprite for that level. Some levels are harder but he's having fun figuring out how to beat them all. This game is NOT for children under 7 or 8 years old. It's not violent or anything but requires the dexterity of an older child.
I highly recommend this game for kids aged 7 & up. Both boys & girls alike will enjoy using Mario, FLUDD & Yoshi to beat the various levels within the game

First of all let me say that this is a great game. It doesn't have the stellar graphics or flawless storyline of Metroid Prime. But I own both games, and I have to say: I don't care! Isle Delfino is beautiful: A true paradise. If you played Paper Mario, and loved Lavalava Island, then this is for you.
The storyline is pretty much the same as always: One of Bowser's family or cohorts snatches Peach, and you have to get her back. But it throws in some very nice twists: Mario gets arrested (shocking, I know!) and is forced to clean up the Island. But he has FLUDD (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device), and believe me, FLUDD takes the normal restrictions of movement in video games and blows them away! You can jump, hover, and rocket to almost anything you see. Water plays an important role, and nothing beats riding on a Squid, or using the turbo nozzle to jet around a harbor.
The graphics are pretty good when you are near an object, but they get a little fuzzy (which might be an effect intended as sort of an island haze) when you are farther away from something. The water effects are gorgeous, very impressive. I have yet to see a GC game with bad water effects.
The music is great! The island tunes are relaxing, and make you feel like you're there. Sound works flawlessly with Mario to make all of his expressions and actions seamlessly perfect. Mario displays a variety of reactive expressions after being idle for a long time or running into a wall (yeah, it's pretty funny).
Also, characters are great, if a bit quirky, but that's part of the charm of this paradise. While conversations are limited, there are lot more characters than typifies an average video game, so you'll have plenty of interaction with the inhabitants.
Overall, this is one of the best games I've ever played. Fun for all ages (unless you follow the concept that Mario games are kiddy, in which case I'd be surprised you bought a GCN, even though the stereotype is false). A GCN Must-Have!
Game Summary: (1.0=lowest ranking, 5.0=highest ranking)
Very Important* Somewhat Important~
*Graphics: 4.0 Definetely better than average, but not Metroid Prime quality.
~Music: 5.0 Excellent!!!
~Sound: 4.5 This is a judging against all games rating, but for it's genre, it's 5.0
*Fun Factor: 5.0 So much to do that's so much fun, and even washing of graffiti can't hinder it at all.
~Characters: 4.5 The sheer amount of characters makes up for any lack of really defined conversation, such as found in Animal Crossing (And even it can be somewhat monotonous). And the characters themselves are top-notch.
~Plot, Storyline: 4.7 Even though it goes on a classic storyline, it redefines some mechanics, making it an somewhat original title.
*Control: 4.8 The camera can be a bit fussy and annoying, but you can control it as you wish. Sheer level of movement which is expanded by FLUDD takes overrides any camer complaints.
Overall: 5.0
My Advice: Buy this game now!

I could tell this would be a cool game. Its really not much like super mario 64. The water squirter mario has is cool. You can spray things with it. You can use it to hover. Of course you do learn some knew things in the game. I just rented this and its looking great. I think lots of people would enjoy this game.
Entertaining but awkward to control

In Super Mario 64 the only "difficult" part for me was getting Mario to swim underwater. Otherwise, jumping, leaping, flipping, wall kicks - all were fairly straightforward and my controller controlled them as expected. Also, all the baddies in that game were pretty straightforward and reacted as you'd expect when Mario punched, kicked, whatver, them.
However, in Super Mario Sunshine, possibly because of the water involved, I find it very awkward to control the water pack. There are initially three modes for shooting water with the water pack. Method 1 is to use the double nozzle, which makes Mario hover over the goo and squirts downward. Method 2, harder to do, supposedly works by using the single nozzle, holding the R button down until it's all the way down. This is supposed to make Mario stand still and squirt water. But whenever I do this, instead of squirting at my target, Mario turns around, looking all around him (although his feet do stay in one place), and as he turns the water stream turns with him, so that I am not squirting at the target anymore. And method 3 is by far the hardest; this involves holding the R button down just a little, which means Mario can squirt while he runs. This is very bad because his water stream doesn't stay focused on the targets, but wildly shoots all around the area, wasting water and time.
Also, with one of the baddies in this game being a sort of toxic goop, it's much harder to deal with than a straightforward guy like (say) Bowser. This goop is runny and flows around Mario and sometimes even with a good on-target squirting it doesn't go away, just washes downstream (or whatever) to make an even bigger pile of goop.
I loved Super Mario 64 but I can't seem to get past the third stage of this game, and I've only got 4 stars so far (after maybe 30 hours of play). Luckily my 3-year-old son is happy to simply maneuver Mario around and squirt things, or the game would be sitting idle on the shelf.
