This is Mario for ya. There's bright colors, coins, collecting stars (or in this case suns), the damsel in distress, and ofcoarse Yoshi. While this game is very enjoyable at times, and the water pack is fun just to mess around with, the game is your basic platform game. Mario goes on a vacation and the Princess is captured by a Mario look-a-like. Naturally, Mario has to collect so many suns to go to the next 'world' in order to collect more suns and so forth until he reaches the bad guy and saves the day. If you like repetitive platform games like Super Mario 64, you will love this game.
A Little Bit of a Let-Down, But Still Worth $20

The Nintendo game designers made it hard on themselves with Super Mario 64. How, precisely, does one top that game? The only way one can top it, in my opinion, is by coming at the Mario saga from an entirely different angle. Sunshine doesn't deliver enough in that respect.
Don't get me wrong, Sunshine is a fun game, with great play-control and an interesting enough storyline. It suffers, however, by being the next entry in the Mario library after Super Mario 64 and it suffers by having a game-progression that doesn't move along fast enough. The beauty about Super Mario 64 was the wide variety of worlds the player could immerse him/herself in. Sunshine lacks a comparable sense of wonder.
Of all the Mario games, this one took me the longest to beat - not because of difficulty level, but simply b/c I'd get bored and play other games. If the game was still $49.99 I would refuse to recommend it. However, since it's only $19.99 (and even cheaper used) I say go for it. I promise you that it grows on you after time and, like the Mario Kart games, is a great game for quick pick-up play if you don't have the time or energy to sit down for an extended session.
A bit too "kiddy" for veterans

For those of you who, like me, grew up with Mario from the very begining, the newest Mario game for the gamecube is a bit of a letdown. Sunshine is basically mario 64 but with better graphics and cute characters.
One thing that annoyed me at the begining of the game is that Peach is an absolute bimbo, which is distressing if you've played Smash Bros where she can [take care of herself]! If she showed just a little initiative then she wouldn't get kidnapped all the time.
Once you get past the poorly scripted movie scenes, then the game becomes alot more interesting. The play controle is just like Mario 64, so it's easy to adapt to. The water FX are done exceptionally well, and the graphics are amazing. What a shame that the story doesn't live up to all the glitter.
Finally, mario's waterpack talks. It's almost as annoying as the fairy in Zelda64. Every time it wants you to see something it will tell you. EVERY TIME, even AFTER you know what to do. How annoying.
What saves the game is it's gameplay. The leves are very well thought out and complex. Some levels are so tricky that you sometimes wonder how the heck you're gonna complete it. The "special" worlds come to mind where you run and jump over moving and rotating blocks in an empty void. *few*
in the end, it's a great game for little kids to play and enjoy, but grown-ups might have a few problems with it. Give us back the mario that EVERYONE could enjoy!
Fun, but challenging

Mario's latest adventure has him cleaning up some nasty sludge on the gorgeous resort island of Delfino. Using a FLUDD device, Mario is able to hover, squirt and blast his way out of some sticky situations! However, getting the hang of the FLUDD device is a bit tedious, and finding your way around is a bit confusing at times. I have a lot of fun playing this game, but also have thrown the controller down in frustration after not being able to figure out what to do next.
As an old-school Mario fan, the jazzed up versions of the original music that appear in this game really make me smile!
Well, mario lives up to his title of janitor

Mario is finally doing what he was meant for. On the gamecube though, he was a bit better at fighting pikachu, driving a go cart, and throwing a party. It has the same platforming action, but a rather dumb approach to it. I played mario 64 for a while, and I liked that game better. This game did have more challenging platforms to go accross, but not as many. AND YOU STILL ONLY NEED TO COLLECT 120 STARS/SHINE SPRITES! If they made it like 500 then yeah this would be an easy 5 star game. But it was pretty fun for the time it lasted.
Completely lacks the imagination that made Mario 64 so great

Super Mario Sunshine never achieves what made Super Mario 64 so great. IMAGINATION. Super Mario 64 included many things such as winged caps, with Mario souring above everything, with heoric music going on, a haunted house level that was actually CREEPY, and missions that were actually fun to do. The haunted house in this game was simply a joke. This is one example of an element of gameplay that lost all it's inspiration. This game had a lighthearted manner that just messed everything up. The bosses in SM64 were serious encounters, with challenging levels to go along with them. Not this one. In this game, bosses usually including pulling a cork out of a squid's stomach. This game loses it's pace about 1/4 of the way through. NOT NEARLY as good as Super Mario 64. Hopefully, Super Mario 128 (it has been confirmed by Nintendo) will be more like Super Mario 64.
Dissapointing

When I got my Gamecube naturally the Mario title was one of my first choices. After playing for a while and never really getting into it i let it collect dust. This game somehow lacks the magic of past mario titles, and for the first time I am not compelled to reunite the plumber and the princess.

This game serves as an example of different ways that Mario can be used as a title character in a game. Some might think the idea of Mario running around an island cleaning up a mess might be ridiculous... that's because it is. However, there is alot of fun in doing it. You get alot of free reign and are able to roam everywhere.

I'm definitely a Nintendo era kid. I grew up more with the SNES, and of course Mario dominated the game industry in all sense of the word. I LOVED Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. Then... finally a new Mario game was to be released on the GameCube. I picked this up not too long ago and don't get me wrong, it's imaginative, kid/ adult friendly, graphically beautiful and all the other intuitive things the Mario franchise has built itself on. BUT... it lacks some of the things that made all the other Mario games so wonderful. Remember the blocks from all the other Mario games? They are virtually gone along with many other elements that made Mario games so unique. Rest assured though, Super Mario Sunshine still retains much of its classic Super Mario 64 feel. I really like this game, I just wish it was a little less modernized.
This is my favorite game.

Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite game. It has everything. Action levels when F.L.U.D.D. is taken away, mini games, and treasure hunting levels when you hunt down red or blue coins. The story is about Mario taking a relaxing vacation on Isle Delfino. But when he arrives, he learns that a person who looks like him has been destroying the beautiful isle with graffiti. Mario is to blame. Mario is forced to clean the mess. Now, armed with F.L.U.D.D., Mario needs to clean the mess and track down the perpetrator. If you complete the game with all 120 shine sprites, a special picture will come up after the credits. If you beat it with less, a different picture will be there instead. This would make a perfect birthday present for kids 10-13. Have fun and a relaxing vacation.
