This game has been picked on for so long that I just HAD to step in and defend it! This was the first big Mario adventure since Super Mario 64, and I thought that it delivered everything that it should have and more! I had such a wonderful time playing this game. Spraying the jetpack, riding Yoshi, collecting coins and shine sprites etc. And that cool, tropical music...ahh! Everyone keeps saying that this wasn't as good as Super Mario 64, but I thought it was way better! Super Mario 64 didn't even have Yoshi, except as a brief cameo appearence on top of Peach's castle. No, Yoshi isn't the only reason I think Sunshine is better than Mario 64, it's just ONE of the reasons. Spraying all the goo off of thing's with the FLUDD jetpack is much funner than it sounds! And this game also gave Mario's arch enemy Bowser a voice for the first time ever! And Peach? What can I say, she's as cute as alway's. I guess that's why Bowser keeps kidnapping her again and again! ^,^
The bottom line is, don't let anyone tell you that this game sucks, because it's totally awesome! If you missed out on this game, then you missed out on a HUGE moment in the Super Mario Series! It will alway's remain a classic.

I purchased this game when I bought the Wii and it works really well especially with a Gamecube controller. The plot of the game is that you (Mario) are visiting a distant land, when you are confronted by the citizens who accuse you of polluting their countryside. Mario is sentenced to using a water canon to go around and clean everything that was ruined. You soon find out that there is a Mario lookalike (sort of a blue, watery looking Mario) running around with a paintbrush polluting everything. Your water pack has the ability to be a fire hose, jet pack, rocket pack and motorboat.
Now that the description is out of the way "Here we go!". The graphics are good for a game of its time. It has the overall feeling of Mario 64 but doesn't quite live up to the rep of a Mario game. The puzzles have the potential to be fun, but also incredibly frustrating. The variety of game play is also pretty abundant. However, this game has the absolute worst camera angles of any game I've ever played. Add that to the poor shadowing and you have a formula for a game where the player will constantly have to restart missions and climb sequences from falling off cliffs, not making the jump, falling into the water, falling from not being able to gauge distances, missing landings while using the je pack option, etc. Even Devil May Cry had better camera angles than this game and you can't control the cameras in that game. I even find it pretty annoying that I can't adjust camera controls, I'm very used to non inverted controls and this game is all about control inversion.
Anyway, that is my overall of the game. I'm not sure if this game is worth the $17 or $18 you'll pay in total from Amazon. But if you are a dedicated Mario fan go for it. I say just spend the money on Mario 64 and Super Mario World downloads for the Wii and play those. I think you'll derive much more enjoyment and the less frustration playing those games.

The controls are RIDICULUOS, the "game play" is RIDCULOUS! Every time you leave an area for another, you lose health coins, and you have to REPEAT that area AGAIN!! There are doors you NEED to open but CAN'T!! Your life-meter doesn't last as long as it shows on the screen! Nintendo expects players to believe someone can JUMP out of water without ANY help to catch life coins?!!?? STUPID! I know it's just a game, but we SHOULD be ABLE to complete tasks given us, or just THROW THE STUPID GAME AWAY!!!!!!! WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!
Irritating, poor level design, insult to Mario 64

This game is annoying. It is an insult to the genius that was Mario 64.
The level designs in Mario 64 were absolutely brilliant. They were original, imaginative, and designed in such a way that a 3D platform game can easily take advantage of.
This was sadly not the case in Mario Sunshine. The levels on Sunshine were given an almost Zelda-like aspect to them, in that they were semi-realistic. I.e. things looked normal. Towns were designed like towns, and objects were placed as objects would be, like in Zelda. The only problem was that these were RPG elements being used in a platform game, which simply doesn't work. Therefore these levels were awkward to navigate, and simply not that fun to explore.
Other faults include those annoying "secret" levels (the ones with the classic Mario theme playing). These are 3D levels designed in the classic 2D Mario style - BIG MISTAKE. It means you are trying to apply 2D physics to a 3D environment, which leads to annoying gameplay and contantly falling from the level.
The fact that loads of people are around Mario eliminates the classic "Mario is the only one, and therefore the last hope" sort of feeling. The lonliness that Mario often felt added to the atmosphere of the game.
I won't even get started on that ...thing, it drives me up the ... wall.
It may look like Mario 64, but it most certainly is NOT. Lets hope Mario 128 fairs better - a LOT better...
Very Disappointing

When the first Mario game came out for the NES, your goal was to rescue the princess from bowser--an evil, fire-breathing turtle/dragon boss.
A little more than a decade later, and Mario is running around watering plants and hosing off sidewalks. What the heck happened?
In all seriousness, this game is extremely disappointing. The graphics in this game are almost no improvement over its N64 predecessor, and the controls are sloppier and more frustrating (the water pump controls are very awkward and take a lot of getting used to.) On top of that, the camera behavior has become even more irritating than before. It's not uncommon for the camera to swing around behind a wall and make it difficult to see what the heck you're doing. You'll find yourself adjusting the camera very often, which isn't exactly my idea of fun.
The overall look and feel of the game is strange. Many of the levels look basically the same, the enemies lack creativity, and the music is just bad.
On the plus side, the game does have its moments. Some of the bosses are fun... that's pretty much it.
If you are a big fan of the Mario games, I'd get this just because it's cheap and is a good back-up game for when you get tired of the really good ones (like Super Smash Bros. Melee.) However, if you're expecting this to be a step above and beyond Super Mario 64, you're in for a disappointment.
better than sonic?

We think not, although super mario sunshine is a brilliant game in it's self, when does mario ever beat sonic when it comes down to gameing. Any way back to mario sunshine, this game is worth buying, even if you don't like mario this is still a gamecube essential, but not just because of the fact that you can ride on Yoshi's back, but because of the realistic backgrounds and the brilliant gameplay,. This game has few flaws, i mean out of six massive levels there is only one that is a bit boring and frustrating in places. So if you have a game cube this is a must buy, trust me
This game BLOWS!

This is the worst game that I have ever played. I love Mario games but I thought that this game was horrible. Mario goes around cleaning graffiti. THATS IT! Mario is a hero, not a Janitor!

The controls on the game are the poorest I've ever seen. Mario insists on starting out bent over, and when you try to move him up he suddenly swings up and bends back. Try to aim straight and he moves to the left. Try to nudge him to the right and he swings around 180 degrees. Move him forward and suddenly you're going the wrong way because the 'camera' angle has shifted on you.
I can't stand games that have no control and try to move the camera for you. There is absolutely no fun in this game.
