Not a bad game...

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 11

...but not a good game, either. Much like the other two Star Trek titles Bethesda has released recently, this game promises a lot and delivers a mere fraction of that. The voice acting is good depending on the actor - I can only assume Avery Brooks and Patrick Stewart were more than willing to contribute to this project, while it seemed as if Scott Bakula and William Shatner were shackled to a microphone, and were not fed until they read all of their lines.

The graphics are astounding, with fully rendered nebulas and ships that look better than they did on TV an in the movies. But problems begin to arise when you realize that nebulas don't hover right next to planets, and planets aren't only three times the size of your Galaxy class starship.

However, most troubling in this game is the gameplay itself. The controls are mostly obtuse and unintuitive, and the interface has some wonderful little easter eggs, such as the ability to cloak hidden in the repair menu for some ridiculous reason. It also appears that Bethesda tried really hard to balance out the game between power, speed, hull, etc. But when you throw a Discovery class ship up against a Borg cube, guess what! You're going to die! No matter how fast or tiny you are.

I think the biggest thing that ticks me off is the lack of support and ability to customize. Without even the ability to change how the keys are mapped out, let alone write new missions and create new ships, this product is in the stone age of modding. And the support from Bethesda is ridiculous; all the problems within the game are more or less addressed in the online FAQs, but the answers are all the same: "There is no functionality for [anything that would make the game good] in Star Trek Legacy."

Overall, I have been disappointed with the Star Trek line that Bethesda has been coming out with, including this one. But, despite all of the bad things I have to say about this product, it remains a lot of fun to take on Borg Cubes and play hide and seek with Romulan Warbirds. There isn't as much strategy involved as I would like, and there will never be as much functionality as Starfleet Command or Klingon Academy, but hey - whatever. It's Star Trek.

Its not worth it in my opinion

Unless you are a die-hard startrek fan i wouldnt recommend buying this. It is a short game with some bugs. In my opinion the replay value is not that great either.

Awsome Game with proper computer hardware!

Despite the bad reviews I read, I got the game a was experiencing the problems most of what people were saying. Keys not working, low to bad graphics. I had set all the game settings down to there lowest levels it still wasn't good enough. My computer basically met all the min req except my 4 year old Geforce FX5200/5600 video card was in question. So I picked out using the Read Me file from the Legacy game as a refrence & ordered a new 3D Graphics BFG Geforce 6800 GS 256MB AGP Video Card, installed it and the game rocks!, keys work and the graphics are unbelievable! They blow me away, the lighting and shadows amazing on the ships, at times I think I am watching a TV Episide instead of playing a game. I love the game, if you haven't tried the campaign its great so far. The game plays so smooth with this new Video Card, but again people you must! keep your graphics hardware up to par especially with these High performance 3D games. It makes a world of difference. I would say if you know you have 3-4 year old video card or using graphics that came with your computer it is not even close enough to get the full effects of the #D high performance games you buy today.

Legacy PC version is not a video game console game, it's a PC game

Yes, there are quarks to the game, but to SciFi, techies, trekies, and program tweakers this game is fun to play and mess around with. If you are at least one of these that I mentioned above then this game is for you.

If you want a game console simplicity then don't get this game on PC.

If you are a treky, then the performace of the ships, and, to some, the very akward maneuvering is part of the experience of moving a large space ship in 3D space. I have played many space games that are easier to maneuver (ie Homeworld), however such games lack the specifics of targeting, sheilds, energy allocations, etc. Don't get me wrong the game has issues, but overall I give it a 4.4 stars.
There are at least a couple of websites that has tweaks for this game. The tweaks are very, very good. There are many ships that can be imported, and there are many improvements for existing ships in terms of perforamce, sounds, and appearance. Legacy shares many programing elements with Armada(I, II)and Brige Commander. This game is like a little honda civc, but with some tinkering this little honda can impress. Unless the programmers of Legacy come up with more patches, expansion packs, and or a sequel, this game could have a cult following.

Fun - for a Trekkie

Dispite what a lot of reviews have said - this game is pretty fun - especially if your a Trek fan and Trek Game Fan.

Pros-

- Its Trek
- Has Innovative game design, and nice ship to ship combat
- pretty good, State of the art graphics
- Has a large community of game hobbyiests and Modders making free expansions and support for the game. A lot of free stuff to download to make the game more fun!
- Game levels are of high production quality with high sound, music and voice quality
- If you're a modder or like to alter code in your games to alter gameplay this game is made for that with a lot of things run by easy to alter text files
- If your looking to work in the video game industry or you enjoy modding - this is a good game to have to learn how to tweak and make models for game engines.

Cons

- With a radically different interface from all other Trek games - and took a bit of work to learn. (easy once you learn it though)
- Missions are VERY hard. (no kidding you may want to find cheat codes to make the game easier for yourself.)

I wanted to like this game so bad.

I'm a long time fan of the Star Trek universe, and I so wanted this game to be fun, but it was not. I've never been so let down in my life. Poor controls, poor gameplay, and limited options.

You'll get more excitement out of buying a novel based in the Star Trek universe. This game pales to even pong.

Very fun game if you get the mods. If not the replay value sucks. I do recommend purchasing this and getting the Mods!

Not what you would expect.

Even though it's made by Mad Doc, it is not like the Armada series, or what you think a modern RTS game is. It is a shoot with some tactics.

Bottom line you, you will be pushing the left and right mouse buttons a lot!

Star Trek Legacy is a great game with great graphics. It has the all the ships for Romulan,Klingon,Borg, and Federation ships from small ships to big ships this game is great. only a few minor problems. You may need to download a servicepack for better graphics in Nebulas. Nebulas have a great thing that allows ship damage to make the game a little tough. This game I recemend for gamers who like a challang(A BIG chalage). I do not recemend this game for people or kids or Tennagers who get frusterated ehen you lose. (you may want to gat some cheats.)

I like the Starships you bring into the game. But, i don't like it that when you are the borg, you can only buy a battleship if you get one. Also, try to bring in other ships, like the Bonaventure class. Also bring in new races like the Remans, and the Tholians.
