Buggy interface, lousy gameplay directing(though store/dialogue somewhat decent), and a patronizing "ported from console" feel, this game is undebatably the worst title of any genre of games for the PC. Yes, as the horny juvenile highschooler pukes who wrote the dialgoue in the TV series "Enterprise", this stinx like the spinx and is, in fact, for the immature at most. When, as in music and other arts and Entertainment, games get real again(and MS goes under) I will be somewhat impressed at what is happening to PC games in general, this is a travesty of a once great gaming device. Thier is no graphics card worth this, no PC upgrade worth this, and stinky X-boxy controls limited to up, down and sideways. Like Need for Speed's downgrade from car inerior view to no, there is no bridge access! Yeah, you really feel like your in control. Moron. What a stupe!
By the end of Archer missions, fun kicks in...

I agree with many that getting the hang of this game takes a bit of time (I had the same problem with Bridge Commander, and I just played that game again straight through to get excited for Legacy).
By the time you get Kirk's Enterprise, and you have learned to warp on the strategic map, learned to conserve phaser power for the close, continuous shot, learned to allocate energy on the fly, and just savor the effects of the weapons and models (as opposed to backgrounds, that I think are really ugly), this is a great experience.
** Update **
I have been playing this game for a week now and continue to really enjoy it (in fact, I like this game more and more with time). I know there is a massive negative reaction to this game now, which is at least inconsistent with my own experience. I personally find the controls to be quite elegant. I agree that I don't like the design decision to have to play multiple phases of a mission before being allowed to save it. But if I could beg for one feature, it would have been to add the equivalent of the galactic conquest/"battle for twenty worlds" open ended game that was in Star Wars: Battlefront II. It would be great to be served up an hour worth of quick battles that had some mild strategic element and a sense of consequences.
Terrible controls, broken mechanics, bugs

This game is a mess. It looks to have been designed for the XBOX 360 and ported to the PC. Playing with a keyboard and a mouse, it's next to impossible to get anything done. Target lock doesn't work--you lock in a target, and the game loses the target a couple of seconds later. Getting a torpedo lock is next to impossible--your ship must have to be lined up EXACTLY with the target to get a lock, and then the lock is lost before you can even fire. Switching to an XBOX controller is a slight improvement, but not much.
No save points except for between missions, you can't choose the enemy's ship(s) during a skirmish, controls can't be reassigned without hacking into files with a text editor, space stations break up into a few huge spinning chunks when destroyed. Graphics are adequate, but not as good as they could be for a new release.
I've uninstalled it from my PC, and am waiting to see if Bethesda/Mad Dog finally puts out a patch that fixes the game. The 1.1 and 1.2 patches didn't do it.
Really, save yourselves; dont' buy this game until you read that it's patched and fixed.
Sigh...

While this game is a treat for the eyes it's an absolute chore to play. Still, it's kinda fun to tool around in the Enterprise from the original show. If you're not a die-hard Star Trek fanatic, then stay away.

THIS IS THE WORST GAME.... EVER!
All of the below comments regarding defects in the interface are true. The game is unplayable and also quite boring. You'd be better off taking the money and burning it. SHAME on the game producers who issued this undeniable piece of crap. They saw the chance to make a buck with a terrible product and ended up damaging not only my opinion of thier company, but of the Star Trek brand itself. I will never buy another product from Bethesda Softworks and I suggest you do not either. Also, I will think twice about any other Star Trek software product. NBC seems more interested in milking it for every penny possible rather than doing anything to maintain and improve the brand.
Again, you'd be better off peeling off your own skin and bathing in alcohol than buying this product.

First of all, I'm a major Star Trek fan, in all aspects of the word. I've been watching Star Trek since the late 60's, and I was thrilled when Bethesda announced the release of this game. Break down is as follows:
Fun-Still playing skirmish mode as of this writing. Love pitting ship against ship, however, not being able to choose your opponent for classic match ups is a real let down.
Playability-Extremely frustrating on the PC's keyboard. You can't remap the initial layout, and I WILL NOT go out and buy a console's controller just to play this game anywhere near decent levels. Controls that are listed in the manual will sometimes work, other times, you are on your own.
Graphics-This depends on how "uber" your computer is. Mine is medium grade material, and without modifying this game (heavily), I would not be able to play it even though I meet the minimum system requirements easily. Do not be deceived by what they have written on the box, folks.
Overall-Disappointments and letdowns abound for the entirety of this PC flop. I still play it, yes..but only because (as mentioned) I've modified the heck out of it. I didn't give up on this game despite everyone else's review, and am I disappointed? Yes. Extremely. Would you recommend it to others? Absolutely NOT. Do not buy this game, even if it ends up in the bargain bin. Failed promises from the company that released it (a.k.a. patch anyone?) leave this game like E.T. did all those years ago: In the trash dump.
Remember, my "fun factor" award is because I did everything possible to get it to run, and now it does so on my system at good speeds. The campaign mode is unplayable due to the heavy requirements graphically (nebulas and whatnot). Skirmishes are the ONLY thing I enjoy about this game (see above for my gripes about that). Stay away from this title as I should have done in the first place.

Star Trek: Legacy is a pretty good game overall. It has its flaws, but it's fun. First things first though, if you're not a Trek fan or in any other way is expecting a generic space-shooter, look elsewhere. Only Trek fans will find fun with the slow moving yet tactical battles of the Star Trek vessels.
Graphics (6/10)
Don't let the back of the box fool you. While they're decent, they're no where near "next-gen." The reflections and HDR are nice additions, but the stock textures are a bit bland, but with some re-textures found at mod sites, it can look a lot better. The backgrounds are a tad too colorful, although some may find it nice. The planets are ridiculously out of scale, but you can just ignore them. The phaser and photon textures are ok as well. Overall they're ok, just don't expect anything super-nice looking.
Gameplay (6/10)
If you ever played Bridge Commander, Legacy is basically a dumbed down version. If you haven't, what you do is you command up to 4 ships, can steer them and fire phaser and photons in a 3rd Person perspective. You can double click an enemy ship and your ship will follow it automatically, or you can can steer it yourself. The battles follow pretty faithfully to what you would expect though. Phasers can fired from many angles, and you have rear and frontal torpedoes.
In the campaign, there's 3 Eras: Enterprise (Archer), The Original Series (Kirk) and The Next Generation (Picard, Sisko, and Janeway). It follows a pretty bland storyline that involves all 5 captains (which are voiced by the original actors) and, of course, the Borg (and yes, it even makes the Borg bland). At the end of every mission you get "Command Points" to buy new ships, which there is a fair amoutn. There's also a skirmish mode in which you can play the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, and the Borg. It's ok, but the ships from TNG are the best, but since they're the most powerful, you're likely to get creamed very quickly.
Sound (5/10)
The phaser, photon, and voice acting are all ok. The bg music is a little bland and repetitive, so don't expect much in there. You're probably wondering why I gave it a 5 then. Well, in one mission, you have to save these colony ships from the Borg, and every time one gets assimilated, this piercing, screeching, make-your-ears-bleed scream explodes out of your speakers and assaults your poor, defenseless, eardrums. After the first one I had to turn off my volume. It's that bad. Just a warning.
Re playability (3/10)
Not much here. You can beat the campaign in a few hours, and the skirmish mode gets boring rather quickly.
Overall(7/10)
Not a bad game, but not the greatest. The current price ($35) is a bit much, but for $20 or less it's a good deal. It's on Bridge Commander 2, but if you're a Trek battle fan it probably will appeal to some of your tastes.

Here's the most honest review you may find Star Trek gamers.
I wish I could have given this game high marks but here are the reasons why I don't:
Control pitch for ships, too sensative.
Missions in the beginning are way too complicated leaving you frustrated at times.
As far as pro(s) go, I'll give the game credit where credit is due.
Excellent graphics, realistic sounds and storyline.
Quite honestly, I wish Activision had been on this project given how well they did Armada I and II
Maybe the next one will be better, but overall, I felt very let down given how good previous games have been.
What happens when you combine Star Trek with poor Console Develpoers?

Add one measure of Star Trek with about 40 measures of extremely incompetant game development, and you get this amazing little wart of a game! And trust me folks, I am NOT kidding.
I have played just about every Star Trek game there is, and nearly NONE has been this bad. (And that says a LOT since there have been some pretty poor Star Trek games released to date! "Star Trek: New Worlds" anyone?).
The only thing this game has going for it is mighty pretty graphics, but don't worry, it all goes quickly downhill from there!
For starters, this game suffers quite badly from 'consolitis'. It's control scheme does NOT suit the PC at all. It barely suits consoles, either. This game at times tries to act as a 'fly from behind your ship' theme, but often also requires an almost 'Star Trek: Armada' style of control. It does NEITHER well.
I won't get into the addition of 'Enterprise' content, though I do not like that show, or consider it to be worthy of addition to even a good game. I know that show has it's fans, and overlook this.
This game also has more bugs than a herpetologist's fantasy collection! I've played some buggy games before, (the first release of Battlecruiser 3000 leaps to mind), but most had at least something to get me to keep trying to continue. Not this one though.
You want to play a GOOD Star Trek game? Look for Star Trek: Bridge Commander, (which thanks to available mods looks even better than this piece of space trash). Do not torture yourself by buying this one!
A final word I will give you on this: If you simply MUST play this regardless of it's almost universally poor reviews, get an X-box controller, or you will end up tearing out your own hair in total disgust. Star Trek already has enough baldness, don't do this to yourself!
Good but could be much better

Pros
-Good voice acting
-Nice variety of missions
-Huge amount of ships to pilot
Cons
-Only 4 races: Federation, Klingon, Romulan, & Borg. No Dominion or Cardassian
-Not a lot of tactical depth
I liked this game for the most part. I would not have purchased it for its original price of $40, but if you're a Trekkie or anybody else just looking for a good way to kill some time, then I would say that $20 is a fair price. The game, despite its shortcomings, was enjoyable.
