Gets really old...

I was very excited about this game when I got it, because I remember loving the old version of Pirates that I played when I was a kid. I think the game basically is the same, with updated graphics of course, but very little in added in terms of gameplay. This game was kind of fun for the first couple of days that I played it, but it got old really fast. Watching the SAME cut scenes and duels over and over was REALLY depressing. It made me question what I was doing with my life. Really. Who want's to do that when you could be engrossed in a decent video game? Bottom line, only buy if you're looking to toot around for a couple of days (at most). P.S. Please note, this is just an opinion, which is probably ridiculous.
Great Game! (When it works)

I am a huge Sid Meyer fan, and have never been disappointed. This is a bit simplistic as it goes, but that is also what makes it a great game. The only downside is that it was not given sufficient QA before they got it out the door. I have been beating my head against a slew of installation bugs since I installed it, and from the online forums I've seen they are common (did they actually test this thing against, say, more than one video card?).
Hopefully the good people at Atari will provide patches now that Christmas is over and we have actually bought the darn thing. If you can get it working, it's brilliant. I recommend it.

This was, unquestionably, my favorite Commodore 64 game. In my early teens I played it repeatedly. In retrospect it may have been a little repetitive. Sail here, sail there, sword fight, etc. etc. Still, I'm looking forward to reliving the experience. Plus, anything that Sid Meier actually had a hand in is going to be a great game.
Pirates appears to be an addictive game .... once it runs

I had more problems getting this SW to run than any SW I have ever bought. I tried to get this software to run on three different machines (two of which were purchased this year). I initially had no success on any of the three machines. On one machine the software always locked up the computer following the introduction video. I had to unplug the computer in order to reboot it! The second machine kicked me out of the game within 5 minutes, and sent me back to my desk top.
After 3 days of working on this problem, I finally got the game to work very well on one machine. The three things I had to do to get the game to work were:
1) disable all other applications, and owner processes, as described on the Atari web site.
2) Turn up all the video settings to their maximum values through the game's menu. (I have an Intel Graphics card, and someone mentioned on one web site that this should be done for this game if you have an Intel card.)
3) Download the latest drivers for my Intel graphics card via the intel web site. (This seemed to make the biggest difference.)
Once I did all this, the game has never since had any problems other than the fact that some figures are semi-transparent.
Since the game starting working well, my two youngest sons (11 & 14) have become addicted to the game. However, if you are not relatively computer savvy, you may not be able to get this game to run on your computer. I for one do not think one should have to spend this much effort to get a game to run on two new computers.

I really think the title says it all. Its a terrible product, I have never seen such a buggy game. Its so fundamentally flawed that they mislabelled what the actual game disc is.
The game itself is almost impossible to install correctly the first time and the graphics and vid is almost cartoonish.
PASS on this poorly executed game.

I have had this game 2 weeks. It played great for about 3 hours then crashed. I have uninstalled/reinstalled, tried to patch it with available online patch, just keeps crashing every 3-8 minutes. I think class action lawsuit may be in order as the online gaming sites are full of people like me that would love to play the game but can't keep it running long enough. Have tried to contact Firaxis but their website is also completely messed up, SQL errors... I want my money back!
Same Great Game play as the Original with lots of minor improvements

Fans of the original will readily recognize the game play of the newest Pirates. Relatively little has changed in terms of game play but there are many new features and upgrades. The most obvious difference is of course the graphics, which far surpass the twenty year old graphics of the original. The new version also has some new options. Now, you can upgrade your ship with such things as cotton sails and bronze cannons. There are a total of nine upgrades. In addition, you can capture specialized crewman such as cooks and gunners from other ships there are eight crew specialists in the game. These make you a better fencer, sailor or even help you win a lady's heart. Perhaps the best part of the new game is the special items you can collect. There are 34 unique items you can collect for a price.
Like the original you search for lost members of your family. You also get the opportunity to hunt down the evil Marquis to his secret hideout and avenge your family honor. Also you can still find buried treasure but now they belong to one of the nine greatest pirates. Hunting down the great pirates such as Blackbeard is another part of your task. Winning the favor of a governor's daughter has become more complex. You must now dance at the ball and do a number of other tasks to win the fair ladies hand. At first, dancing is fun but when you get invited to every ball it becomes rather tedious. When you attack cities you no longer sail in and then fight the guards. Instead you must engage in a land battle with the exception of a few cities that don't have a fort. In addition to cities there are now settlements, Indians, pirate havens, and Jesuit missionaries with which you can trade and go on missions. You receive pirate points or fame points like the original but here there is a very clear breakdown, which you can check at any time to see your progress. Overall, the game is extremely fun and addicting especially to those who played the original and like the original it offers endless playability, as no two games are the same.
Fun At First, But Then...

I realy love adventure games so i got this one.
It seemed very fun and exiting at first.
But then later on it gets kinda boring.
Also as many people said, it has quite a few problems.
Although I had only 1 problem, my friend had a big problem with the game crashing.
And the worst thing is that there is no patch for this game!
So to get to my point, if you want a game that you want to enjoy for a long time like Counter Strike, then dont get this game.
Overall this game is realy fun to play, but when you beat it, you wont wanna play this game agin.
Just like the original

I used to play the original PIRATES for days at a time. It was by far my favorite game. This updated version has beautiful graphics and retains the fun feel of the original. Clearly, it is too similar to the old version to really wow me all over again, but the game is still fun to play. I had a couple friends visiting last weekend who had never played the original. They couldn't get enough of it. Overall, I think it's easily worth $20 to give it a try.
An old Classic is back!

The original Pirates on my old Commodore 64 was second only to Defender of the Crown. It logged many hours and as you can imagine, I was extremely eager to try the new version out upon hearing about it.
So when one of my friends bought the game, he let me borrow it over a weekend he was out of town and I spent the entire weekend amongst the high seas!
The game played much like the original which isn't a bad thing; however I did feel that it might have suffered a bit by that fact as well. While it retained the feel of its namesake, it just didn't have the replay value I remember.
It could have used some additional animations and a bit of flavor or feeling amongst the various towns. Each and every tavern, Governor's Daughter and Barmaid seems repetitive. The new features of sneaking into town and keyboard ballroom dancing didn't add enough enjoyment to the game and I would have rather development time been spent on sword fighting and ship modifications.
There just didn't seem to be enough differences in ships and I found that If I took a smaller faster ship, the ship battles were always victorious.
All in all it's a decent game worth playing as it does retain most of it's predecessor's feel, but it didn't have enough draw to make me want to purchase it even at reduced prices. My advice would be to give this one a rental try or pick it up in the bargain bin.
