If you played the original pirates you will love this game as it faithfully reproduces the old game and adds in some extras that really enhance the game.
I have played til the wee hours of the night every night since I have gotten the game.
Unfortunately some people have trouble installing it especially people ATI 9600s, and there are some small bugs that I hope will be patched, but the gameplay is fantastic. In fact the fighting is done better than the original game and is more challenging. There is also dancing added in which at first I hated because it is quite difficult but which now I have come to really enjoy.

Being a pirate myself, I was excited to see that a game had finally been made to show the public what it is like to be me.
I got a hook for a hand, two peglegs(screw those losers with only one pegleg), and one sexy long beard. I pillage stuff and kill people everyday. You'd think that since I do this in real life all the time that I wouldn't want to do it in a video game too, but you'd be wrong. Pillaging rules.
'Pirates' is okay. Its gets a bit repetitive sometimes, like in the constant dueling. Its unrealistic too because I never lose a duel in real life because I rule, but in the game I occasionally lose which is totally unrealistic. The dancing parts of the game are repetitive and unneeded. Everyone knows that pirates don't dance.
The best parts of the game though are the battles at sea(which are much too easy on lower settings)and when you invade an enemy town(which in my book is every town). These parts are pretty sweet because violence and killing stuff rules.
All in all, 'Pirates' is a nice attempt to show people what its like to be me. But they fall a bit short and I can't justify the $50 it costs. If you wanna hang with a real pirate, let me know and I'll let you swab my poop deck.
Fun but too many crashes

While the game has a fun nostalgia effect to it - the system crashes make it unplayable. (My system is top of the line custom built in March of 2005) Constant system lock ups and crash to reset make it not worth the money. Apparently some users have figured out that it is due to incompatability with Intel chipsets...WHAT?...anyway the game company provides no fixes and no forums/FAQ's on the website. Tell you anything??? Bottom line - save your money for something that works as intended.
The best has returned!

I was a huge fan of the original Sid Meier's Pirates! back in the eighties. If hard pressed to mention _one_ best game ever, that is still my choice.
This game is a welcome update to one games history's greatest titles. The ease of the pick-up-and-play game play is legendary, and together with the geniusly simple interface and the ridiculously addictive gameplay are trademarks of a Sid Meier classic.
My only gripes will be that a little more diversity and variation in the art work could have been nice. But I am still enjoying countless hours of just-one-more-mission play in this fascinating world of dashing pirates and bold adventures. Just can't put it down...

I used to enjoy the old Amiga version of this game and I was eager to see if the update spoiled it or improved it.
In this case nothing was fixed that wasn't broken and the gameplay is intact. The graphics are great and the cut scenes are short and don't slow up the action
It's very addictive. If you are a sailor the sea battles are really fun because you have to know how to sail if you expect to win many of them. You have to try to start the battle with the "wind gage" as they used to call it--upwind from your enemy. I think you would enjoy this game, but if you have anything important on your schedule for a month or so you might find yourself remiss in meeting deadlines or obligations.
They added a new element to the game where you dance with the governor's daughter and try to impress her with your terpsichorean ability so that she will divulge secrets. It's a riot! A real test of reaction and rhythm and you soon find out how clumsy you are.

This is one of the best games I have ever played. The possibilities are endless. You can attack (and sink or steal) ships, pillage towns, search for buried treasure or lost relatives, trade, romance governors' daughters, start bar fights, and/or earn promotions from the French, Dutch, Spanish, or English. You can sail the seven seas in a 25-crew pinnace or a fleet of 5 ships and 400 men (or more). You can play on 4 different levels of difficulty and in several different decades. This is one of the few games where you are truly the master of your own destiny. You can write your own story within the game's loose framework and open-ended plot. The downside? This game is highly addictive.

I bought this game on a whim and am so glad I did! I've stayed up later than I should have every day this week playing it and it is still just as fun as the very first time. What's better than fencing and treasure hunting? Nothing! It's worth every penny spent.
I am disappointed that I couldn't be a female pirate though. But I've gotten over it.
A great game - long play - great fun.

This is a great game with lots of play, good side plots, and a good story. Sid Meier has a knack for making great games. The play is fun, fast-paced, and runs for a long time. It is definitely worth the money.

Ya just got to love a game that is as good as the first one. yeah some of the problems with the first on are still there part of that is the realism. Well worth the money. It is one game that I actually like to go back and play over and over.

I played the original Pirates way back in the day and hoped this one would live up to the old one. It has! Pirates is absolutely fun. The game mixes new graphics and keeps the simplistic fun of the old game. Really fun. You can trade, plunder towns, find buried treasure and lost cities. The game is not linear at all, you can do what you want when you want. Very fun offline game.
