No Beta huh?

As a beta tester, who has not played a version of this game beyond the original, I need to set the record straight.

All games and I mean all games are tested at least 6 months prior to release. Even crappy games have a beta, and there are beta testers who play the games and tell the company what they think.

These reports to the company include glitches, support issues, good and bad elements of gameplay, shading, color, painting, bleeding, rendering, poly issues, geometrical issues . . .

In addition, beta testers sign a contract that does not allow them to disclose anything about the game prior to the game's release. Nor are they able to allow their friends, family, neighbor, . . . to see the game.

With that said. I have a friend who beta's for fireaxis who tells me that this game is right on par with the sims2 for graphics, and easily as addictive as Civ3. I can't wait till it goes retail. I have already preordered my copy

Pirates...ugh :(

Oh how i remember the Commodore 64 (C64) version of Pirates back in the day. Staying up late, building my fleets and running around the Carribean. What went wrong?

The gameplay is almost identical to Pirates! released on the C64 years ago which was great for years ago, but if gamers wanted the exact same gameplay they would go play the old game. I think on a whole the biggest letdown was the expectation of a classic title coming back which would give people the same entertainment level, but in a new gameplay environment and in this it failed miserably.

Some positives is the graphics have been updated slightly. The water moves better, the ships are more animated and umm that's about it. The game works out of the box..no patch required.

The cons (where do i begin). I'll give a few highlights..

First off, the cutscenes make we want to vomit. They look like they come out of a Disney film. Really cheesy and cartoony. I don't get the feeling of being a pirate, more like a Backstreet boy with a cutlass.

Courting the Governer's daughter becomes something highly avoided. You can't just give her presents or obtain stature you have to play a Nintendolike mini-game to dance with her which is basically arrows flash and you have to hit the correct arrow key to move with her or you both stumble and she gets pissed and hates you. Yeah, that's super duper fun.

The game was fun for about a night's play and ended there. I wouldn't recommend picking this up.

Pirates: A Gross Disappointment

I received this game as a Christmas gift this morning. Having grown up playing Pirates, having loved and mastered it over the years, I was naturally thrilled to try out the re-make. I couldn't be more dismayed. I cannot play the game for ten minutes without its malfunctioning, at which point the game aborts and I return to the Windows screen. This is apparently a widespread malady; many, if not most, owners of the new Pirates are experiencing similar difficulties running it. One would think that in re-making a game beloved by so many Sid Meier and Atari would have taken more pains to make this right.
As for the game itself, from what I can surmise in the brief period before it malfunctions, Pirates offers myriad new possibilities: the graphics are wondrous, if somewhat Disney-ish; the swordfights are exciting; and there are many diverse missions one can undertake in the course of one's travels. Unfortunately, in the midst of each one of these missions I was abruptly interrupted by the game's malfunctioning.
Do not buy this. Sid Meier and Atari owe its loyal customers better.

Addictive... Even for a Girl

I got this game with the purchase of my new computer last week. I am already too addicted to do much else. I agree that the clips are a bit repetitive, but I was very impressed with the aging of my character. I have learned how to tack to fight against strong wonds and I am getting better at dancing (argh). I love this game!

A Pirates! lover.

I've played the original for the Comodore 64, then for the 1st Nintendo system, ....IBM PC (early 1990's), then it was remade as Pirates Gold! for the IBM PC and the Sega Genesis. Now it's here again! This has been my favorite game since the C64 days. The new version will be a BIG hit with people who played and loved it before. In the C64 days, there were two types of gamers. Those who loved Pirates! and those who hated Pirates!
If nothing else, it will be a history lesson for you and help you memorize "The Spanish Main".
If you liked any of the past versions then you'll love this one!
Also, for those of you who have a hard time dancing with the Governor's daughter, you need to visit the trader in the back room of a tavern. Hopefully he will sell you a pair of boots or dancing slippers. Both will help your pirate to dance better, but with the slippers it will be hard to miss any steps. Have fun!

Sid Meier's Pirates

This is a great game--what you would expect from Sid Meier's. Once you get it to run that is. It is full of bug's. In my case, I spent hours trying different fixes, but I could not get mine to even launch. Atari released a real dog with this one. For details, go to www.atari.com and look into the user forums.

Due to the efforts of some clever people in those forums, I was able to find a fix that finally worked, and it was not a real easy one. Note that Atari technical help was able to do nothing for me, other than the usual referral back to my computer maker ("must be a hardware issue"). I am running a Dell 4550, by the way.

Like I said, great game for all ages, but I would not buy this thing unitil Atari announces patches to fix the many bugs that you can find discussed on their user forum.

Great fun on the high seas!

Sid Meier's Pirates! is a wonderful adventure game. You explore the ocean as a pirate captain and experience life on the high seas. You can capture ships, sack cities and towns, and search for buried treasure. The game has many levels of difficulty, so you can have fun right away, but you don't get bored when you have mastered the game.

Frustrating and Slow

Don't try and play this game with the "minimum" system requirements. While it can be done it is outragouesly slow and dancing is nearly impossible. I upgrade my RAM to 512 and I could dance and do all the things in the game but I must say it is outrageously easy. First time I played I ended as Mayor and second time as Bishop. I won't be playing a third time, as it is just too repetitive.

An Awesome Remake

I loved this game back in the day and I love it now. I purchased this only a couple of weeks ago and I've already lost major amounts of sleep.
Yes, it does get a little repetitive in some areas. For example how many times can you possibly fight Baron Raymondo? Jeez, The guy's like a cockroach. But, I'm totally willing to overlook all that.
Wouldn't a rated M version for adults be interesting? For example, you actually get to stab people with your sword, get to go a little further with the governor's daughter than chatting or dancing, etc. An interesting twist would be if you were to make a governor angry, he would have you declared a pirate out of spite and your own nation would turn against you.
Ah, but I digress. . .
Overall, a fine remake of a great classic game

One for the ages

Once upon a time, there were adictive, absorbing, and fun games that you would loose days, weekends, or whole weeks playing. Games like Civilization, Sim City, the original Pirates, and now this remake joins the list. First off its incredibly fun, and it runs remarkably well even on older systems (I run it on a 1.4ghz Athlon with a Radeon 8500). Additionally, it's easy and intiative to learn and use. Finally, it's emersive, as you really get sucked into the game. BTW, it's yet to crash, which is another 'feature' lacking in many games these days.
Is it perfect--no, not by a longshot. The dancing is lame, the sneaking into cities is a waste of time, and I find it annoying that when things start to go well, everyone wants to divide the plunder. Do these faults detract from the game--hardly, as if I weren't at work right now, I'd be playing the game. It's that good.
