What a disappointment!

I received the game with anticipation one day ago. First of all, it took two times to download the game onto my PC. After which, I didn't even make it to the options screen when my computer froze! I had to remove all the software again and try to install it again. After a long download time, it froze again. I packaged up the software and sent it back to amazon for a refund. I'm hoping that my computer is not damaged!

Sometimes, more of a good thing is still good!

You are years older than when you saw the original Pirates, most probably you have more money, less time and less patience!
That is why you think the cartoonish look of the new pirates sucks.
Remember the little fact that there are a lot of "new" people (kids) that never knew the original game. Stop complaining and enjoy your 2004 PC Pentiun 4 128 Meg Video Card and the little time your wife and kids let you enjoy and play.

Cool game if somewhat repeticious on the cut scenes. Sneak into town is unmanageable.

here are some hints ,
2) during sea battles always use the grape shot or the chain shot to defeat ships faster 2) at your first sword battle get the captain close toan opening then keep forcing the captain backwards to trow him off the ship.

GREAT GAME!!!

Screw everyone who said this game is bad! They are just dumb people who never got into the game. (If you did get in to the game, and didn't like, my apologies)this is a highly addictive game!
Every thing great, but two minor problems
-Requires decent computer
-Can be repetetive.
Still overall a great game. Yo ho ho!

Eh...

With the new pirate movie out I was put in the mood to play this game again after it was gathering dust for a few years. Unforunately i lost the 2nd Cd and can't play it.

I'll do a review on it anyway.

The game is fun for about an hour then you see just how repetitive and childish a 'Pirate" game can get. Nobody ever dies. For example doing a broadside to your victems ship will make the enemy crew fly into the air screaming "WHooohoooo" and "Weeeee" as if it were a theme park ride. who would've thought being shot at by cannons was such a ...'blast'. it really takes you out of the experience of being a pirate. and puts you more into something like a disney movie. which is exactly how it looks. very cartoonish and kiddy. and if i remember right everybody speaks in a 'simlish' language. kind of how the sims in the series the sims1 and 2 speak.

the game is pretty much 10 mini-games rolled into one. the sword fights and dancing. you do it once and you will have done it 1000 times. the only fun thing about it is attacking ships and capturing them and getting gold. but even that gets to be old after a while because you have to soon devide the booty up with the crews which starts you right back at square one again. so forget about having a huge fleet of ships. oh yeah another thing. a fleet is useless because you can only use 1 ship at a time in a battle yet the enemy can use more then one.

another stupid thing is how you age. you can see your character gray and wrinkle and yet any wives you have or family members that you rescue will all look exactly the same no matter how old you get. Consistency please. as if throwing in the aging was just another feature they wanted to add to make the game more interesting.

a message to any other fan of pirate games out there that read this. There was a pirate game out about maybe 5 years ago. i cannot for the death of me remember the name of it but i remember playing the demo for it and it was a lot of fun. it was just like this pirates game but more for grown ups and less repetitive and not as cartoonish. if someone knows other really good pirate games that have come out in the last 5 or 6 years could you list them in a review of this game as better recommendations for pirate games? thanks

i like pirates

Like others, I could not install this on a relatively new computer (XP)which meets all system requirmts. Kept crashing computer, even after repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling. Downloaded patch, that did nothing. In reading the old reviews, it seems like this problem has been around forever, and they still have not fixed it. Could not get through to tech support line, and they have never returned email. Save your money on this and try Age of Mythology or Age of Empires. They load and play without any problem, with wonderful graphics and no repetition.

great game but not up to expectations

The idea is great and the graphics are beautiful but ........ the era's do not offer significant differences/challenges and there are limited fights/dances
still an enjoyable game but no civ 3

Great improvement over the original

I might be a tad biased on this one, I was a huge fan of the first one. Bootable floppy, no need for a hard drive, 4-color CGA and all. In fact it was the first game that I playing first when I upgraded to the amazing 16-color EGA! Look, green! Hah, nostalgia.

Overall the updated game is great. On the normal level it provided *just* enough challenge to be entertaining. There's not a lot of short-term replayability, after finishing it you probably aren't going to jump right back in, but if you come back after a few weeks it'll at least be different.

I agree with the dancing/wooing of the governor's daughters, the cuter the daughter, the harder the dancing and the dancing definitely requires some serious twitch reflexes. I gave up on it altogether. There should be a kidnap option, after all, we are pirates. ;)

Building up a nice fleet and hunting down the top 10 other pirates while trying to balance gold income and food for your soldiers, it's definitely a lot of fun. I highly recommend giving it a try.

I gave it 4-stars overall just because of the governor's daughter thing (it's a significant part of the game, yet excruciatingly difficult) and lack of real replayability.

Aaarrrrr! Shivers! Me wrists are sore!

This is easily the most addictive game I've played ... ever. Is it repetitive? You bet. But is the fun worth that? You bet. I too had problems with it quitting and going back to the desktop but that was when I ran it from my desktop shortcut. If I start the game by inserting Disc 2 of the game, I've never had a problem with it, other than quitting playing long enough to do anything else!
