Warning : Not for everyone

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 9

Many people have confused this game with EverQuest, while it may be similar in a few aspects the game is a completly new style of gameplay, something not experianced before. In ShadowBane you must use more strategy and planning in order to survive. The idea behind this game that makes it so amazing is that you can "change the world" in many differant ways. Unlike other RPGs, Shadowbane allows for full scale RPG, which is NOT for everyone, you can loose all items in your inventory and money as well, while your main weapons and armor on you stay you will be left rather angery when you find out that ANYONE can loot your corpse, EVEN if they didn't kill you. This game is amazing in many aspects and it is hard to explain, but you need to deside if this game is for you, some will like it some will not, those that don't should try EverQuest for a more lax, less involved RPG aproach. If you want to get involved and change the game with your character and make a lasting impact, wage world war, and conquer cities, than ShadowBane is your best game :)

big after level 20 gank fest

if fan of daoc and played on mordred and andred primarly pvp server and love the mass ganking then you are the right type to play shadowbane
it is one massive guild verses guild gank fest
while the leveling 1- 20 is very reasonble it becomes a vastly different game when off newbe island. Ready to be killed lots and even have your own group loot your corpse. Dying in the higher levels gets very expensive due to con always having to be restored
this is a mouse only based game and the camera views are not "fixed yet so first person view is not aviable at this time
So if tired of same ole same ole eq or daoc this is not the game to pick wait for some other up and coming titles
unless of course u like the total pvp and not much pve

Fascinating political sim -- players need to be fixed

Shadowbane is truly fascinating in its political dimension. If you've never experienced true power, work hard and you may achieve it in this game. You can rise to run a city of hundreds or thousands of other players. What it takes to get to the top is probably one of the most fascinating game play experiences ever.

The problem is the players. 90%+ are really not the sort of people you'd want to spend time with. There is a small population of troublemakers and predators. As unwholesome and unpleasant as these people are, they make the game work -- providing a fear factor that keeps the rest of the players under your thumb. Most of the rest of the players are without creativity, rather dull, petty, heavy consumers of resources which they inevitably waste through mismanagement of their own affairs. Finally there is a very small fraction of talented, interesting people that will help you build your empire. These are diamonds in the coal.

Player vs. Player combat tends to be short, but exciting. Ubisoft hasn't done a very good job of making these large battles run well on modest computers. Expect to just die because you can't see or act due to computer CPU overtaxation unless you have the very latest game machine. Since these events are rare and can generally be avoided, the game is still playable by mere mortals. You can go hunting, explore, investigate the game system. The character classes and rank progression are reasonably rich. There is a lore behind the game that a number of people advance in their role play. Hunting is without a doubt the dullest of any game.

Many players will tell you that player vs. player combat is the point of SB. It isn't. Politics is. PvP is just politics by other means.

If you like roleplaying (and own a Mac) you should be playing clanlord (www.clanlord.com) instead.

True RPG

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

Shadowbane is the first game I've seen in a long time that incorporates true RPG capability. With the ability to customize gameplay by building cities, forming guilds and creating all out seiges against other cities, Shadowbane has the capability to become a monster game. However, it it not without it's faults. Many of the bugs and lag have been fixed in recent months. What players my not like is the lack of quests like in Everquest and the point-and-click movement system. Overall I feel Shadowbane is a must for online gamers who want a true RPG.

Pretty good, better on Mac... for a CHANGE

I have this game and played it on both my mac and PC at work, and I have to say the mac version seems to be a bit further along than the PC. There aren't as many bugs when I play it on my Mac (a 1ghz iMac with 64mb GeForce4) it operates pretty well.

The game itself is fun, and I'm looking to get to higher levels with more to do and more things to fight.

The graphics aren't nearly as good as ASH-2 but I think the PVP and battle concepts make for more interesting gameplay.

Played it about 8 hours? 10 hours? Dun remember...

This was the first Mmorpg that I have ever tried...since I thought EQ was too old, DAOC's realm fight was not too attractive, AC and AC2 looked pretty cool but I didn't like how the titles sounded. Asheron's what???? hehe. I chose this one for the game's strong emphasis on PVP...and the preview movie blew me away!! I got my copy yesterday and installed it and patched it...the new patch was already out...I tried Minotaur Fighter first. There were so many worlds that I could have started from. I didn't know where I was at...I was running on 32MB TNT which is minimum requirement for this game and was JUST FINE with most things at minimal settings. I really am not a graphics person; they are all cubicals anyways. And yet, it was pretty nice even at minimal settings. The interface was very complicated and I had to hit the manual while I was playing. I met a couple of people and I joined the group and there is this thing called Group Formation which automatically follows the group by the control of the leader...that was pretty coo...Overall, I thought this game was pretty cool...I will find out how long I can last but so far so good. Yes the game needs work and stuff but that's just given...no game is perfect...I still haven't found out much about the overall game yet so I gotta hit the manual and web site ...If you like PVP this game looks promising...the first month is not enough to balance out the classes but hey they are working on it...the support team was very kind and answered my question right away...so i think this is a pretty good bet right now.

Don't bother unless you have a few dozen friends

The game is fun, if you have a few dozen friends already ingame to watch over you. While the game protects players until level 20, you don't become viable in any of the serious combat situations until level 50. With experience, you can hit level 50 in a week; however, if you just start the game, it could take you close to a solid month.

This is not a light gaming experience at all. If you're looking for an MMOG to try out just for the sake of trying it out, I suggest City of Heroes or Dark Age of Camelot. Shadowbane is "advanced" MMOG gaming. It requires you like hunting and being hunted by other people, at all times and in all places, and being comfortable ending the playsession further behind than where you started.

That's why I gave it 2 stars. It's not a good all-around title. It's fun for a very specific type of player.

Get DAOC and its expansion (Shrouded Isles) instead

This game is an aboluste Joke;

So i bring it home. come to install it.
the game ran fine for the first 30mins.
then it started crashing.
i downgraded my video drivers and the crashes went away.
ok thats not really a problem.
heres where it gets funky and the game really starts irritating anyone who has played daoc for a while.

1) Mouse clicking to move.
the reason they opted for this method is to save bandwith considering the servers for ubi.com are in montreal, canada. dont mess this up with the developers who are Wolfpack studios in North Carolina.
TRY going up a stairs or even exploring a room with mouse clicking. you'll go mad.

2) the graphics. ... Yes the graphics.
absolutely amazingly EQ!
I would like to give SB a new name: EQ 1.1 with PVP mod.
i think that explains allot.
what rock has Wolfpack been under?
you see games with real nice graphics like DAoC and jaw dropping graphics like Asherons Call 2.

3) this might be ok for some but its just not for me.
once you die you lose everything. thats fine until you realize that 5000 gold you just spent the last hour collecting is now gone.
who has it? your guildie. will he give it back? no.
tough luck. its how the game works.

4) pay for anything and everything.
your trainer wants money.
yup. he wont train you until you pay him.
then you must buy armor.
with what money? the 0 i have left after paying the greedy trainer?

and the most popular one of all.

5) LAG LAG LAG
they just did a major server upgrade last night to the game and yes the lag is a bit better ... always at 150-170 for me.
i once spiked to a number so high, 12363ms for about 15mins.

and the list goes on and on and on.

I do not play PVP because PVP generally totally screws up MMPORPGs by filling them with a bunch of gankers interested only in tormenting people trying to go about their business.

Shadowbane is different because PVP IS the game. There are no frills otherwise. Levelling is just a way to meet people and get comfortable with your character, but you will advance several levels in most play sessions and will be strong enough quickly. In this way, most of the irritation at some pvp jerk trying to slaughter you while you are mining etc. is totally alleviated. Carebears like myself cheerfully played Quake or UT and never got upset at dying because that was the game. Same with Shadowbane and when the point of the game is to kill each other getting killed just isn't that big of an irritation.

The game was released in a quite buggy state and there are a lot of niceties missing you'd expect in other games. But the gameplay is here. Combat is fast placed, but not reliant on "twitch" gaming. There is a nice balance between "class interdependence" and soloability. (Although in the long run you CANNOT play the game without a guild--I don't mean you're weakened, I mean you simply can't do it.) Gameplay is closer to an overhead fantasy combat game like Dungeon Siege or Diablo 2. Character development is intricate and allows a huge variety within a class.

It's simply been a long long time since I was this enthusiastic about a new game. And this was not at all the reaction I expected, I bought the game half just to see the train wreck. I was most most pleasantly surprised.

A New Look At MMORPG'S

I love this game, this game has been in beta for over 2 years and has come out with a great product. Granted yes it does have minor problems with game play as of release, yet half of them have been fixed already, I highly recommend this game for all players who are looking for something more than the average hack and slash that Diablo2 and EQ provided. Leveling is easy, groups are easy to come by, and so is money. This isn't your easy breeze through game though, and as its storyline develops you will be able to take part in molding the world from creating/joining a guild to rule the world, to the company's ability to create massive quests on a world scale. For example just recently they had forces attack all the major cities and the men and women of the guild came and had to fend them off, expect more to come in the comming months
