Simply put, it's just not very good

This game has a lot going for it with plenty of stealthy ninja action. The problem is that the cons get in the way of the pros. For starters, the controls are annoyingly bad. The fighting consists mainly of run up to the guard and mash the attack button and hope something connects. Usually your character will continue attacking even though your not hitting anything, meanwhile your being chopped to death by a guard. Next, the graphics really show the Playstation's age; in other words, they're terrible. More than once I was aiming my grappling hook at a nearby roof, only to watch the entire building I was aiming at disappear. But hey, if pop-up is your thing, you'll be more than satisfied here. One thing I liked was that it was challenging (mainly thanks to the controls). However, there are just too many other good games out there to get to even consider this one. Go get Metal Gear Solid instead.

The first Tenchu to come out (which is the reason why there isn't a number behind Tenchu) and the first Tenchu I have ever played, also the Tenchu that forced me to fall in love with the series. When I first played the game it was love at first sight, no one-night stand here, this one's a keeper. The game takes place in Feudal Japan; the game starts at the time period and impressively stays there through the entire game. You won't find anything you wouldn't find in the time period (Yes, Feudal Japan did have guns). Some people would complain about the over-exaggerated bloodshed and the sometimes-cheesey dialogue. I must disagree with these people these two factors made me enjoy the game even more. "What the hell!?! Why would that make a game better?" You maybe asking, well those two features made me feel as though I was watching an old Japanese Kung-Fu movie, minus the kung fu that's how I believe you must think of this game to fully enjoy it. After watching the ending I believe that's the effect the creators wanted to put in this game, after seeing the end sequence yourself you'll know what I mean. Of course the bad camera angles sometimes made this game annoying. In order to block your opponent's attacks you must hold down which a lot of the time backed you into a corner.... The reason I only gave it three stars? I don't think this is a game for everyone, that's why. I believe this game will be a rare collectible in the future, so buy this game now and save yourself future trouble.

Tenchu: Stealth assassin - Circa

GOOD:
- Easy and fun stealth gameplay
- nice/tight controls

BAD:
- Really dated graphics
- Stealth gameplay can be overly simple
- Little replay value with not much to unlock

WILL IT FIT YOUR TASTE:
- Ancient Japanese samurai and swords theme
- Ninja Stealth gameplay, more fun hack and slash then overly complex (think more Metal Gear then Splinter Cell)
- Two playable characters one male and one female

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Tenchu 2: Birth of the assassin
- Metal Gear Solid
- Siphon Filter

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Getting a better ninja rank at the end of missions unlocks much better items

Great game of honor, stealth and nobility.

This game redefines all sword related games and makes them look pathetic. Tenchu: Stealth Assassins is hack-and-slash game. Here, you have to be patient and kill silently so no one will know your presense. You cannot be a brute and just walk around sword fighting everyone you see. At the end, you are graded by your performance and if you do that, you'll be labeled as a thug! To get a Grand Master's label, you have to not be seen and still complete your objectives if it's either to assassinate or to steal something. The better label you get in each level, the more ninja tools and spells you'll earn for future levels.

This game is a gore-fest, either you like it or not. It has realistic violence of samurai fighting, but shows class of feudal Japan. This game is a little hard to get into, but once you complete your first stealh kill, you'll want to do it over and over again. That never gets old.

Metal Gear Solid might have been a powerhouse of an action game, I still believe that Tenchu is better at applying stealth to an action game. The AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Tenchu is great. They will search the place if they hear you walk, if they hear an animal (you can use a special pipe which makes the sound of an animal to distract guards), the guards can even hear the cries of another guard being killed.

Overall, Tenchu is a great game, but it's not for everyone. I give it a 4 because of bad camera angles at times, and a below-average voice acting. Otherwise, it's great.

Great game, overall

This is a great game - the story line is interesting if not brilliant, and the change from killing everything you see to really needing to sneak around is great. The only problem, and it's a biggie, the camera angles are HORRIBLE. You often will end up looking at a wall, frantically trying to turn around while some guard is shooting arrows into you. However, in spite of the periodic frustration, it's addicting. To bad it doesn't support analog controller, tho.

THis is one of the most original and innovative games that I have ever played. In most games you just fight the enimies face to face, while hoping to out jostle them and take little damage. In Tenchu you must use the art of stalking your enimie in order to get a quick kill and take on little damage. The tools you can use in this game also help you sneak up on enimies or to attack them from long distance. THe boss fights on this game are pretty hard at times, and are used to make the game more of a challenge. THis game also has a lot of gore so if you don't want your kid to see pools of blood this game is probably not for you. This game is flat out awesome, with only one downside that keeps it from getting five stars, Tenchu is just too short of a game, which leaves you begging for more.

A true Ninja brought to gaming

Unlike the Corny ninja titles of years past like "Ninja Gaiden," "Ninja," and others of that manner. Tenchu finally takes the Ninja game to the next level. Not just a run around and throw stars at senseless, weak enemies, this game forces you to learn and master stealth and the art of sneak attack. The different weapons available keep the onslaught more versatile, and the different sword attacks seem to stun the viewer with there harsh and brutal images. A great game , a great story line, but still a few small problems. even though you have a large variety of weapons they are very limited. some of the game may be confusing, and not very straight forward as to what you are supposed to do, and you tend to run into some very annoying camera views that seem to definately take away from the game play. But overall it's a very entertaining game which i recommend to any action fan.

Everying is great but the ending...try it anyway!

My older brother introduced me to this wicked game in late 1998 and I was totally blown away. This game can be so involving it makes you feel like you're a real ninja. The cheat codes actually enhance the gameplay, making the game all the more fun. I liked some of the hammy acting and dialogue -- it added to the fun! If you want a great action game that really pulls you in and involves you, play this -- better yet, BUY IT! You won't be sorry!

A really fun game when it comes to killing and sneaking around. There are alot of really neat items you get. Such as smoke bombs, shurikens, gernades and lots more. With lots of action came a big challenge, although Once you get experienced with fighting and blocking etc. the game gets quite easy with only 10 levels. I beat the game in a week and a half. They have a good training level for when you first buy the game which is really helpful to test out killing. If you liked METAL GEAR:SOLID you'll probably like this game alot.
