Rips the guts out of Playstation Gaming!

This is a beauty! The first time I heard about this game I sweated in anticipation. Was it worth the wait? Yep it certainly was.

The thing that drew me to this game was the sheer inventiveness behind it. All other ninja games were basic platformers, incorporating tedious sword slashing and maybe throwing a projectile. But here they went straight for the throat literally! Here you play a ninja assassin! Great idea! Sneak behind your enemies by rolling between cover and stalking walls. Before reaching and killing them in a single hit. Awesome!

What made this game a real gem though was the enemy AI. It is belting! They don't simply walk all the time. Sometimes you find them sleeping, other times they are placed so that they are nearly always watching each other. Then there are dogs that sniff you out and alert the guards. So it maybe simple early on but later if you want to get the coveted Grand Master rank you will require all the ninja skill and honour you possess.

There were only ten levels in the game, but they were varied. One level you're sent to kill an evil merchant who is bent on earning cash through dirty methods while other times you have to find a certain item, reclaim a castle, and another few.

The music was also great, from simple easy music for the merchant, to an awesome orchestrated piece for one of the later bosses.

items were well thought of too. You can go into first person mode and throw a shuriken at people wherever you choose. But really evil is the way that you can lure guards and dogs away from their posts by chucking a pot of poisoned rice in their path, ready for you to run behind them and mercilessly gut them!

There were a few flaws though, sometimes the camera cocked up and you couldn't see what was happening. But these are only minor faults that don't detract from the gameplay at all.

If you wished to be a true ninja this is the closest thing to it ever! Comes highly recommended...

...Good as a first attempt

The stealth market is one that is hard to master, realistic, but fair AI is the hardest task. While tenchu is an all around good game, the AI could use a lot of work. If I am seen, I don't want to just be forgotten if a timer runs out, I want them to run to each guard spreading the word, I want them to have a lead on me, not just forget I existed. Other than this problem, Tenchu is an all around good first try at a stealth game, but it's not perfect.

Good game.

Tenchu. One of the best stealth games of the year. If you want to spy like a ninja, this is the game for you. Hide behind walls and climb the roofs of houses and sneak up on guards to kill them. Wow.

I really enjoyed this game, because it makes you think before hacking and slashing at your enemies. As for the eye and ear candy, the sound effects add a lot to the overall feel of the game and the graphics are sharp.

The levels are fairly easy to pass, but difficult to master. Don't be surprised if you stay up late trying to get Master Ninja status. However, you can cheat (some codes don't need a game shark) but that's no fun. If I were to compare it to another game I'd say it is a cross between Metal Gear and Bushido Blade.

The only thing I really wanted from the game that it did NOT deliver was the ability to use the weapons of fallen enemies and the ability to choose more than two characters.

Warning: this game is not for little children. To be played by the 13+ crowd.

This game offers unique play. It has a pretty good storyline that keeps your attention, but the stealth required to play the game makes it a keeper. Unlike Metal Gear, you actually loose points by being spotted, even if you make it through the mission successfully. You can opt to go through the mission again for a higher score, or you can go on to the next mission. I liked that aspect the most because the second time around (knowing where everyone is hiding and waiting for you) you get to get the drop on them! Cool beans.

Finally, a ninja game for Playstation!

...I found another ninja game called "Tenchu: Stealth Assassin". I read the back of it and it looked pretty good. When I tried it back at home, I was blown away! This game was really sweet. And after I tried the demo of "Ninja: Shadow of Darkness" that was in my game "Fighting Force", I realized I was lucky that I didn't waste my money on it.

I would never trade this game in for that other stupid one. This game is incredible. Going up to guys from behind and killing them with classic stealth kills like the throat slit and the stab from up front. Not only that, but the enemies that you fight in the game are awesome: samurai, ninjas, bears, wolves, dogs, and all kinds of demons. This game is totally awesome, if a bit slow though. It the jumping and fighting action were more like it was in "Devil May Cry", it would have been just like playing in a Japanese anime. Oh well, it was still a good game. If you're a true ninja fan, you must have this game... you won't regret it.

Over all, I liked the gameplay quite a bit, the environment is a bit messy that's all. Most Activision games I played are liked that for some reasons, but their games are always some of my personal favorites. I dig Ninja stuff and played most of the Ninja games made earlier, but all I have to say none was like this. You can actually stealth and stuff for the first time. Pretty much like Metal Gear's style and I personally think that's where they got the idea from. But overall, they did a good job with storyline, re-playable... I don't know, it's quite a long game and quite time consuming. Anywayz, if you like ninjas, get this. You'll like it at least...

Great even for PS1

This is a great stealth game and one of the first I ever played (besides Metal Gear Solid). I spent many hours on this just being sneaky. The main thing I liked about this is that it's not your typical run around hack and slash game. You actually had to think about what you're doing and what the outcome would be. The voice acting wasn't that great but it was at the time when this came out. I think most people's problem with this game (myself included) was the annoying camera angle at time but once you got used to it, it wasn't that bad. Definately a classic game in my book.
