Bring back the old

I was very anxious to play this game, since I had been quite enveloped in roller coaster tycoons 1 and 2. However, the game is now made by a different company and that company has taken the wrong approach to it. Atari has made the game 3D with lots of confusing controls and features. The game takes away from the actual building of the park and instead tries to make it more like a video game. For those of you looking for an update on RCT 1 and 2, this is not for you. This may, however, be good for first-timers, but I would recommend getting RCT 2 at a good price.

A good choice for RCT fans

If you loved the original and the RCT2, you'll enjoy this. The Sandbox mode gives you the ability to just toy with certain items, designs and get the feel for the game without worrying about completing scenarios.

The "Coaster Cam" in which you can ride the rollercoasters, as well as other rides, is almost worth the cost of the new game alone. Building your own fireworks display is fun too, if you like that sort of thing. There is also an Auto-complete function for building rollercoasters. It lets the computer line-up that last piece of track that you really can't get on your own. RCT addicts know what I am talking about.

As other reviewers have said, the graphics are outstanding, but you better have A LOT more computer then the minimum requirements. The new 3d view also takes a lot of getting used to, as does the way you have to move the "camera" by holding down the mouse scroll wheel and rotating the mouse around.

There are a lot more variables too, like employee happiness, training, etc. A bit much for me, but I know some people really enjoy that stuff.

If you enjoyed the other versions, you'll love this one.

Best Roller Coaster Tycoon yet

First off I'd like to warn you about one thing. If the only computer you have is Windows 98, don't get this game. I have a Windows 98 computer and I couldn't get the game to run correctly. Fortunately though, we have a more up to date Windows 2000 lap top too, and the game runs fine on that. I love this game! I have always been a fan of this series. I own the original Roller Coaster Tycoon and I used to spend hours on end playing it, that is until I got this. I never baught the second RCT because I played it and found that it was basically a carbon copy of the first game. I played this game at a friends house and found that it was great and as soon as I got enough money, I rushed out to buy it. My favorite part of the game is that you can upload your own music files (mp3's and wma's) from your computer and make your rides play them. Right now in my park I have most of my rides playing Blues Brothers music! I also like the graphics in this game. It is a big improvement. I also like all of the new rides such as the motion simulator and planetarium. I recommend this game provided your computer is powerful enough.

Nice Improvents, but can't make up for bugs

Before I begin, I should state that I never owned Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 (only the original) so I am not familiar with any features of that game.
To begin, the graphics on this game are incredible. The camera allows views from every angle and you can zoom really close. There is only one minor complaint: when you tilt the camera up and down (i.e. if you wanted to look straight down on the park) then release the mouse button, it automatically snaps back to the default angle. There is no way to keep the camera at any vertical angle, but this is not usually necessary in the game.
The rides have really improved from past versions, and are pretty easy to make. The coaster builder is a little different from the first one (again, I don't know about the second), but after getting a little used to it, it seemed fine. I especially like the autocomplete feature, which automatically finishes the track for you. A word of warning, however: Make sure you add brakes where necessary on the automatically completed track- it does not bank any of the turns. Overall, not too many complaints about the rides.
Scenery and theming is where this game starts to get a bit annoying. Possibly the most worthless aspect is the need to keep EVERYTHING with the same theme. They hardly made any rides with any theme but classic (except for coasters, which have no theme), averaging only about 2 or 3 per category (thrill, gentle, etc.). The scenery items are really nice, and I don't find it hard to create a cool looking park. This is where the peeps come in: they are EXTREMELY picky about the scenery. I have lots of scenery items and landscaping, and just because my rides aren't themed they get upset. Place one ride or shop that does not fit the style and guests will start to complain and your rating will drop. And with so few themed rides, you don't have a choice but to build some classic themed ones. About half my peeps have only one thought: "What a horrible mix of themes!" Honestly, who says that in a real park? Usually, the scenery in a park is more of an enhancement that a Nazi-enforced requirement from guests. And rides will be painted to match themes, but not overly decorated. My rating is practically a zero and I can find no other explanation but this. The land forming tools are great, although I hardly use them. But with this, paths are really hard to place even on teeny hills. Sometimes, the game won't let you put a path and you sit there for hours trying to figure out how to build over a hill you literally can't even see. The fireworks are cool, but I don't really find it worth it at this point.
This leads me to the peeps of the park. Let me start off with a few good things: the guests have really been personalized and can walk around in groups as well. Although the guests seem kind of goofy and lanky looking, they really do look a lot better. They even can buy little hats and swords and they will wear them all through the park. Now the bad: the intelligence of these people has gone down the drain- seriously. People will be standing outside a food stall for hours complaining about how so very hungry they are and never get anything. And apparently, guests would rather wait until they have to practically piss their pants than find a bathroom. Then they huddle in their little groups for days and days and don't go on ANYTHING! It's horrible. The staff completely disregards their patrol areas and reprimanding them does, as far as I can tell, nothing at all. I'll find the idiots all the way across the park from where they should be and they don't seem to care. The thought summary window is gone, so I really can't figure out why my rating is dropping like a boulder. I kind of just have to guess based on the few people's thoughts I read.
Overall, if all you're interested in is making a park in sandbox mode and you don't care if the peeps are happy or not, go for it. Otherwise, just stick with the older versions for a while.

Pretty good, but could be better

I loved RCT II and have all the available expansion packs for the game. When I found out that RCT III was coming out I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I've had RCT III since the official release date and I must say the graphics are pretty good. Unfortunatley I was a little disapointed to find that it isn't really any better than RCT II. The graphics are pretty much the only thing thats gotten better.

I miss the rollercoasters from RCT II which came fully equippt with scenery items and themes. In RCT III the coasters are pretty bland. No extra scenery items or themes or anything that makes them that special besides the graphics. If you want to theme a rollercoaster you have to build your own scenery around it which is a real pain when you just want to build a simple park. Also the "building" feature where you can design your own buildings and accessories has alot of bugs and is pretty complicated to work with. It takes alot of fun out of the game. You can import coasters from RCT II but it isn't all that.

What's really cool about this game is the fact that you can import your own music into the game. That is really awesome. Also the firework displays are pretty good.

I also think that in order to build a real park you need to have many more booths and stalls than what the game offers. Who ever got the idea that a theme park can function without gaming booths and only a few different food and drink stalls. I think the makers invested to much time and effort in making the graphics good and neglegted several aspects of what really makes a theme park good. Even the name six flags can't change that fact.

So basically in order to make this game really good it needs the following:
- more food, drink and entertainment stalls
- more scenery items and themed rollercoasters
- simplify the handling of the staff
- total remodeling of the "build" feature to make your own buildings
- and please...a better explanation of the complete park rating

Overall it's a pretty decent game. The features are a little disapointing and I really expected more for my money and also because it isn't a completely new game, just a more advanced version of RCT II. If you haven't bought it yet, wait until the price goes down. It isn't worth that much.

Good game, but calls for a very fast computer and it's a bit too buggy.

This game definitely has a lot of potential, except it calls for a very fast computer. My computer I have is equipped for games. I upgraded the video card and the RAM to 1 GB and the video card is one of the best. The computer plays other 3D games perfectly fine, like The Sims 2, but for some reason it just doesn't handle this one too well.

OK, on with the game. I already stated that you need much higher system requirements then the ones posted on the box, so that's over with. The game is a bit buggy. The people get confused very easily no matter what your paths look like, and they walk past hundreds of food stands saying "I'm hungry." causing your park rating to drop. I haven't noticed all that many horrible bugs, since I stop playing the game after 10-20 mins since it runs so bad on my computer.

I'm not saying don't buy the game. It's great and has a lot of potential. So far the only problems are it requires high system specs and is still has quite a few bugs in it.

Very Different!

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 is COMPLETELY different from the first and second versions. About the only things the same are most of the rides and the way you build roller coasters, not to mention most of the options. There is now a "building designer," an option allowing you to design and build structures with no money and a lot of space. There's also "sandbox mode," which is simply a blank park with no objectives or money. The guests (now called "peeps") are more realistic, along with the rides. Then there's CoasterCam. Don't even go there. I have had more fun fiddling with that! It allows you to choose what view, what car, what train. Plus, CoasterCam is for EVERY RIDE!...although you cannot go on and/or inside every ride. BUT: One word of advice: when you first play, before you do anything, USE THE TUTORIALS. The controls are terribly complicated: to rotate the view, you must hold down the right AND left mouse buttons and move the mouse left or right. And, to run a fireworks display, there are dozens of buttons and graphs and confusing controls to push and prod and anylize and puzzle over until you're about to have an emotional breakdown, so I don't even bother. So just learn the game a little bit at a time, and you'll end up just fine.

Buyer Beware!

If there were an option for a negative 5 stars rating, that's what I would give Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. This game is full of bugs and crashes constantly. This game has been a major disappointment and I would tell everyone not to buy.

It doesn't work on my computer

Ignore the 2 stars markings above, I never actually played the game.

This is one game that may actually be worth buying the 3 dollar warranty for. Unless you have a recent, extremely fast windows It probably won't work.

In short: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS!!!

Beware of Your Computer's Video Card

I'd love to review this product but we haven't been able to play it. Evidently, although we have Windows XP we do not have a video card that will enable the product to work. Of course, I thought that if the product says it can be run on Windows XP that was all I had to worry about. I'm not a techie and I didn't know anything about video cards. Now I know and I'm $20 in the hole until I spend at least $50 upgrading my video card. Beware!
Update: Amazon refunded all of my money for this product when I returned it and explained about the video card problem.
