The "Starcraft Battle Chest" is such a bargain and the amount of material included in the package is staggering. Not only do you get the original "Starcraft" with 30 single player campaign missions as well as online play over Bilzzard's [...] servers, you also get the expansion pack "Starcraft: Brood War" with an additional 26 campaign missions, 7 new units, 3 new tilesets, and dozens of multiplayer maps. My only gripe about the package was the somewhat shoddy quality of the strategy guides. They were shrunk to DVD case size and were printed in black and white. The strategy guides also have typographical errors abound, and some cases where the wrong map is shown for the mission at hand. As the strategy guides wer enot made by Blizzard, I still give the product 5 out of 5 stars because the game is, simply put, the best real-time strategy game ever. Starcraft reigns king almost nine years after its release.
Still one of the best RTS games to date

This game still sets the standard for RTS games. It was ground breaking when it was released and remains one of the most current games being played.
Apparantly this game is eaisly compatable with Vista, although I can not verify this myself.
If your an RTS fan you have to pick up this game if you have never played it.
Great game!

If you haven't played this game, you must! It's got great balance between the three races and, unlike most RTS games, the story is good too!

Starcraft 1, despite it's longevity in the gaming market, remains one of the top three RTS games ever made. While the graphics are still a product of the late 90's, the gameplay, in both multiplayer and the singleplayer campaign, is impeccable and still unrivaled in the RTS genre. A must-have for any gamer.
Such a Brilliant Game

This game is one of the best games ever, in my opinon, and maybe the best for the computer. It had brought me hours of fun, from the day i got it to now. I drift away from it for a while, but end up coming back to it. The graphics may not be the best, but are great considering it was made in 1999. Campaign is great to play, as are the normal games. If you want to play online (for free), it's even better. After so many years, it still has many players. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys RTS games or who would like to play an easy-to-pick-up, hard-to-master one to start.
it's not total annihilation but it's close.

im a big fan of total annihilation and ive only made it through a few levels of starcraft so far but it seems to be allmost right up there with it so far! the gameplay and graphics are great although the unit commands are slightly more comlpicated. im looking forward to what seems to be so far, a great game.
Good but not the best

Starcraft is a good strategy game with all the essential elements any gamer would want. The three races Terran, Zerg, and Protoss offer an enhanced game playability factor but in time it loses it's gleaming shine. After compleating all the missions (which you probably wont do anyway since there are 60 total and the later ones are incredibly tough)the multi-player on battle.net gets boring and it's VERY LAGGY. But if you're a really commited gamer and you're looking for some tough and diverse missions this is your game. And if your thinking of getting Starcraft without the battle chest--don't. The battle chest offer Brood War at a reduced price plus the strataegy guides which you WILL need.

The battle chest is a great way to get both Starcraft and it's expansion BroodWar, together the make one of the best combat / strategy games. If you don't own Starcraft buy the battle chest and get all the extras. They will help you enjoy the game fully. If you already own Starcraft unless you really want the two strategy guides just buy the expansion pack Broodwar instead. Starcraft really needs to be played with the expansion; it adds more depth to both the game and tactics with new missions and new units. The basic game play is pretty easy to pick up and if you play the single player missions in order you'll quickly learn the strengths and weaknesses of each troop type. Then the fun really begins when you battle against real opponents across the Internet. After you have played the single player missions you'll have your favorite race either Terran, Protos or Zerg. You'll come up with your own tactics on how to deal with your opponents There is a huge on-line community out there defending the `Honor' of each respective race. Buy the game and come play. This game came out back in 1998 and it is still being played now. Few games can say they have that lasting appeal. The battle Chest is 100% value for money

I'm reviewing this game on behalf of my husband. I've played it and while I have enjoyed it, I'm not nearly as die-hard about it as he is. I'll take Diablo II, thank you very much.
In our house, we have a thing called computer night about once a month. On a Friday night, my husband, father-in-law, and 2 other males from church get together and hook up all their computers to a lan. This is the game that they spend hours playing. It usually starts at around 7 or 8, and the house is not returned to it's normal state until roughly 4am.
It usually begins with a lot of talking smack about who's gonna win, and who lost the last time and what race they are going to be. Oh, and let's not forget about who is on what team. (2 vs 2, of course)
After about a 2 hour battle, and the winning team is crowned, they get up from their machines and have a briefing. This is my favorite part to watch due to sheer fascination. The begin by explaining to each other how they saw the battle progressing, what things worked for them and what didn't, and then how they are might try to avoid the same obstacles the next game.
Then, they return to their computers, the smack talking resumes, and it all begins again. It's just hilarious. And let me tell you, they get rowdy. Especially while they play with headphones on since it's late and they don't want to infringe on the other players.
If this is any indication of the fun that they have while playing this game, it's only because the game is that good.
only computer game that is fun.

I'm not a "gamer". I don't spend extra free time playing games, I rarely attend LAN parties. However, StarCraft is the exception. This game has something for everyone: You can try to "beat" the game by accomplishing each levels objective, you can play against your friends, you can try to be the best by being a part of the championship "ladder", you can design your own game board, you can play "with" your friends against the computer, etc... I love this game!
