Be warned... No one was more excited about this game than I. For many months before it's release I would regularly check screenshots, game updates, and developer reviews. I bought some old Conan novels to familiarize myself with the lore. I ceaselessly attempted to pressure my friends to abandon WoW and start AoC afresh with me. Fortunately for them, none listened. So... I pre-ordered the game (to get the in-game mount), and even paid for the early start and finally the day came when I could play. TOTAL DISSAPOINTMENT!!! Simply put, this game is one of the worst MMORPG games ever. Something of a cross between Guild Wars and Lord of the Rings Online. This game might be worth it without the subscription fee, but to actually pay a fee for this totally substandard junk is beyond reason. The marketing and hype for this game were wonderful however, the reality of actually playing the game itslef is not. I quit playing and cancelled my subscription about 2 weeks into my first 30 days of playing, which came free with the purchase, and I have never looked back. I really wanted to like this game. I made three different classes of character, Dark Templar, Herald of Xitoli, and Barbarian, and they all generally had the same lackluster feel to them. Just wait until you have to go thru the same boring starting area three tiems in a row, mind numbing. Well... I wont go on repeating what so many of the other low and in my opinion accurate reviews have posted here. Just do not waste 50 bucks on this game, it is total garbage, I can't imagine how much work the developers would have to put into it to make if worth my time and money. My advice... stick with WoW (yes, sad but true, call me a fanboy if you want, [although I'm actually just as tired of it as many others are], it is still the best one out there for the money), and wait until Warhammer Online comes out in the fall.

As of right now this game has way too many issues. It reminds me a lot of Vanguard (Good game now, but it took SOE a year to get it there), with all of the broken, buggy and unimplemented "main features". Buy the game now and you are basically paying FunCom to beta test. Wait on this, give it 6 more months and check back.
Pretty but needs Extensive Work

As others mentioned this is a very pretty game, when your able to run it. This game was obviously a rushed release to beat WOW's new release. If your systems specs does not include a Nvidia 8800 series card you are looking at getting 10-15 FPS. Not to mention that the Tech support are so busy chasing down bugs that they will not respond to any ingame help or out of game emails. Do yourself a favor look at their Tech forums before getting the game and see if its worth your time.
Over rated, you might want to wait!

I have played alot of MMO's, I have beta tested alot of MMO's. This one by far was released way to soon. All MMO's in my opinion are released to soon, but out of all of the MMO's I have played over the years, this one has had to be the worse.
First off, this game has more memory leaks then taxis in New York. Crashing, unstable and so much PvP content that isn't even working its not funny. The best part about this game I feel is the music. I do enjoy that alot.
Second is if you have played other MMO's, this UI is horrid. Thats all I have to say about that.
Also I dont see alot of the hype either about this is an adult oriented game. Witcher has more adult content then this does, WAY MORE! And I know Witcher is not an MMO, but the graphics are better too. The graphics in AoC are nice, but not as great as everyone is boasting. If anyone has played EQ2, I want to see your rig run with custom settings with all sliders to max without serious performance issues. But you have to say each game has its perks, I think EQ2 has better lighting dynamics in their engine, but AoC has better looking world environment. Also, in AoC alot of the armor textures look 2D. Odd for boasting state of the art graphics. (If you have a DX10 rig, I know the box says DX10, but dont try to click the DX10 tab if you get it, DX10 is not in AoC yet as others have stated.) Also, alot of armor looks the same, they just changed the color. I have a very high end gaming rig and run AoC all at max settings and I nitpick everything down to the chain on armor. And funcom trying to lay blame on peoples computers is a serious pass the buck that will not help keep the population up or growing.
I do feel this game has alot of potential if Funcom works on serious issues first. As it stands, they are trying to fix things accross the board when they should be starting at the front and working their way to the back. So, if your thinking of getting AoC, all I say is you might want to wait, read up on Funcom forums or other gaming forums to see if things are fixed and improved. I am upset I spent 50 dollars on this for 30 days of play. But, I have it, and after 30 days I will wait and see if things improve.
I gave 2 stars of fun cause its so much fun having to reboot, rescan, and restart AoC every hour to keep playing. When your in a group, this is a bonus, cause no one drops at the same time so it adds to the enjoyment of it.
Overall 3 stars, cause there are a couple zones I go zone into, sit down and turn up the speakers to hear the music as I am doing things around the house. As stated, music is very good.
Mediocre Game for a Mediocre Genre

I find myself rather bored today, so I've decided to write up this review on Age of Conan (AoC), which I recently purchased and have been playing for the past month (in lieu of WoW). I intend to cover some game play issues, what I think of the story line, and finally just talk about some generic issues I have with the game.
The biggest thing I've noticed about game play is that there is NO sense of exploration to the game. In WoW and many other MMOs you had to explore an area on the map to "reveal" it. Also, the quest system is set up so that it tells you EXACTLY where you have to go on the map to complete the quest. It is like having an in-game version of wowhead.com for the AoC quests. What happened to having to actually FIGURE out where to go and what to do with at least some of the quests? I've realized lately that that is definitely my biggest qualm with AoC. Second, I think, would be the combat system.
The combat system is a rather interesting idea in theory, but in practice, Funcom simply didn't find a way to implement it well enough. There is no "auto attack" in AoC, but rather you must face your opponent and you have three target areas to attack: "to the left, to the right, and down the center". Next they bring in combo skills, which at first work by themselves simply by pushing the hot key, but then begin to require a combination of keys (attacking to the left, right or center) in order to succeed. It is a very interesting idea and may have been just fine in a single player game. But after a few days of constantly fighting useless mobs while leveling up it simply becomes very tedious. I much prefer the standard MMO combat system. One last qualm I will mention before moving onto the storyline of the game is this: the world is not seamless. This means, basically, in order to go to any other zone, there is a load time. What if you need to go someplace that is several zones away? You get to sit through four to five times of seeing the loading screen, which can be quite long considering the high system requirements of the game. Plus the sometimes long walks to get to the next NPC that will "transport" you to the next zone.
The story line. This is arguably the most important aspect of a game. It is what has kept me glued to games such as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Starcraft, and many others (while in other games, bad story lines are what have driven me away, e.g. Neverwinter Nights).
I find the story line in Age of Conan to be mediocre, at best. From levels 1 to 20, is it somewhat interesting. You start as an escaped slave at level 1 outside the City of Tortage, end up working your way into the city (takes a whole one quest to get in), then quickly become a hero in the "resistance" against the city's tyrannical ruler and eventually kill the tyrant with your own hand. It is not a bad story line, the first time through. There isn't really a whole lot of replay-ability, however. All the classes are basically the same, with only minor differences in some of the quests depending on your archetype (rogue, mage or soldier). So there are a total of 3 different versions of the 1 to 20 storyline.
After level 20, the personal story line surrounding your character comes to a screeching halt as you leave Tortage and are able to travel the world. The next quest that revolves around your character's "destiny", as Funcom puts it in game, is at level 30. That quest is basically a one dungeon fiasco (oh, maybe 30-40 minutes) and you're done. Then you have to wait until level 50 for the next part (which I didn't bother getting to). Other quests above 20 are basically like any other MMO with your generic kill collectors and get a number of this item by killing this mob. Now that I'm done with the storyline, I'll move on to some of my general complaints about the game.
One very big flaw in Funcom's design is the high system requirements. If you have less than 2 gigs of RAM and don't have one of the newest video card technology, forget even trying to play Age of Conan. And yet for all of that, the graphics really are not all that impressive. Sure, you get your "professional" reviewers who are probably paid by Funcom to say "The graphics are amazing!". But they're not. There are scenes at an active volcano where the lava is stationary. All the equip-able items in the game basically have the same generic look (I found two robes that are IDENTICAL except for the fact that one is long sleeved and the other is short sleeved). The rivers and waterfalls (uhm, waterfalls can be swum up or down, LOL) could have been worked on to be made to look more realistic.
The looking for group tools and the auction house are pathetic (almost as bad as WoW's LFG tool). You think with a brand new game they'd want to learn from WoW to create an easy way to players of the same level doing the same quest to find each other. Or that the auction house would be set up in a way to easily find the type of item you may consider buying.
I'll leave off at what I call the little obnoxious things which simply add to my disgust with the game. Classes were not at all balanced when the game was released. Mage-types STILL have trouble soloing their way up the levels while the soldier (tank) types blew there way through everything. I mentioned that you start off as a escaped slave at the beginning of the game. Every single time you make a character, you are forced to watch the SAME EXACT cinematic, which gets quite old when you simply want to explore all the character classes. Whenever you load up the game, it takes the liberty of scanning your system to make sure you're up to date with all the updates, which wouldn't be a bad thing if it didn't take 5 minutes every time to do it (even if you're just rebooting). Then, you have to click your way through start-up movies and logo designs before actually getting to the login screen.
Overall, I'd have to give the game 2.5 out of 5 stars. Its not bad for an MMO, but its not good, either. As far as MMOs go, I'd say stick with WoW or wait until Warhammer Online comes out. I wish I had a viable alternative for a non-MMO RPG to give you here, but all the companies seem to want to just pop out their own MMOs and get in the pay-by-month action instead of making a quality game. Personally, I think MMOs have ruined the PC Games RPG genre. I would love to see another Baldur's Gate sequel or something similar.

The game is very impressive if/when it runs. There are technical issues that make the game often unplayable for many many people including me, regardless of your computer (my computer is fine and well above minimum specs). Please check the official forums, you will see multiple threads with over 1000 posts each regarding technical issues that make the game unplayable for many. Buy at your own risk. If it runs for you, have fun. But don't be surprised if you can't play at all.

This game is the not "the second coming of MMO's" which Funcom or fan's will like you to believe. This is perhaps the "most overhyped" MMO to come out in ages. We must give Funcom marketing division a gold medal or something. They must really put it on their resume as to how they were able to make kids as well as even adults run and spend their $[...] bucks on a broken game. A game which is either missing most of its hyped features or the majority of game features not even functioning as advertized.
Pretty much what you have is Age of irritating Instances, Age of tedious button-mashing, Age of broken game mechanics, Age of missing features, Age of non-stop ganking=Age of Crap in my view. I have uninstalled the game already and cancelled my sub as I can't justify me paying them for releasing the game the way its. I don't pay to play Alpha...sorry. I might visit it 6 months down the road...though I doubt it. Either Warhammer or wow expac WOTLK sounds to be a much better deal than this half baked of a mmo.

While the game appears amazing at first, it doesn't stay that way for long. The first 20 levels or so of AoC are absolutely amazing. The next 20 are okay, nothing special but not horrible. 40 - 50 isn't bad either. 55+ or so is awful. It is just a giant grind fest. If you want to do that might as well go play Lineage II. At least there you won't get all sorts of out of memory errors and blue screens of death.
The game has some potential, but funcom appears to be taking it in the wrong direction. Also, the game is still in its beta stage, even though they are charging you to play it.
Pretty, but not all there.

The game is great, up untill lvl 40, then classes become gimpped. There is no end game content, and each patch breaks the game even more.
The combo system is great, PvP could be fun, but the class imbalance ruins it (I mean, the tank class with the most hp and armor should not be one shotting other soldier classes, or even squishies for that matter), unless your a guardion or a healer, PvP is one sided.
The client has been riddled with issues like memory leaks and instability. Don't expect to see the wonderful grafixs unless you have a really good computer. Although advertised with DX10, the game currently only works on DX9, and has issues with SLi set up cards, and ATI cards. after 40, the story ends, and the grind begines.
Not as bad as many think (Opinion laded review)

I'm actually a good deal disheartened by some of the reviews here, as they seem a bit harsh, premature, and some(not all) a bit pretentious. I'm not here to say AoC is the be-all,end-all but it is not the steaming pile of crap so many seem to want to pronounce it in opening week.
Since I'm on the soapbox, I'd like to take a moment to remind everyone how god-awful WoW was its opening week, with longer crashes and many more issues in a much smaller world. I recall losing a few days that first month due to a need for massive overhauls.
Now back to AoC....and let's address some of the other issues. I'm not here to gripe back and forth but at least offer my OPINIONS and a bit of facts that i anchor them on...
The size of the world, for one, seems to be a tremendous problem for many people. While I do understand the gripe that it takes a long time to get around, this world was NOT made exclusively for the game, but rather the stories, novellas, and epics that made Conan so beloved a character to so many. As such, the span and breadth of the world couldn't realistically be tempered and abridged to less a scale without forsaking some areas that are already established in print. Would a Star Wars fan be happy if you cut out Tattoine or Dagobah? Would a Civil War reenactor/historian take it well if you conveniently omitted the battle of Gettysburg? For this reason, the world of AoC is large and its a hard pill to swallow, but there's no way around it.
Instancing/Zoning issues:I admit, it can be a pain for the load screen to eat up some time, but it makes those large chunks of the world flow smoothly and seamlessly, rather than "go thirty feet, stall, new area". The determinations of what is PvP and what is safe do seem a bit skewed however, and I won't argue that much of it is...a pain in the rear to say the least.
Crashing issues: Many of the bugs that caused AoC to crash out have been fixed. I've been on since a later stage of the Beta and this game has nowhere to go but up. If you're still crashing, maybe you need to reevaluate your equipment. I was running bare minimum gear for a couple days, then i upgraded the video card to a 8600 GT and saw a marked improvement. Just a suggestion/thought.
Weapons,Armor,Equipment: Yeah, I'll give you all this one, a good deal of it looks all the same kinda cruddy in Tortage....there's about 6 to 10 possible armor suits, the weapons don't show much variation, etc., and this is all true...for the first area. I don't know how much everyone's played recently, but after coming off a marathon gaming session with my brother and his wife, we all agreed there's been marked improvement with selection. Most likely, with more patches, there will come more content and variety. Time will tell.
This doesn't address all the issues, but I'm tired of crapscreaming and doomsaying. Time for the GOOD points.
AoC, like all MMORPGs, does make it fairly easy to group up and talk to folks, the channels are divided according to what *should* be being discussed (In a general sense,ie Out of Character chats on RP servers...should be getting our RP-PvE server soon too!), Many bugs that were present in the opening day are being repaired and addressed now, the ganker problems are being mitigated by Funcom's use of the ban-stick for camping spawnpoints and other offenses, and all in all attempting to answer what the players call for. We're asking a LOT of Funcom and DEMANDING more from AoC....the least we can do is give them some time to try to answer SOME of our prayers!
The creation is in depth and only 'limited' in some areas by nationality/race....it makes some semblance of reason that a Cimmerian shouldn't look the same as a Stygian, doesn't it? These races are supposed to be "Pure-blooded" as it were, being a pseudo-prehistoric setting, before great travel and large scale mingling of heritages.
The quests, while many accuse them of being overly monotonous(without really offering any suggestions as to what to do DIFFERENTLY...), can vary from mind-numbling simple to brutal for single players and the group dynamic DOES come into play a bit...my advice for really seeing this? go to a PvE server or one of the RP servers...the situation IS improving and more and more gankers are getting removed or penalized.
There's a reason the big magazines are NOT reviewing this game yet...let's do the same and suspend our final judgments and damnations a bit so Funcom can give us the whole game.
And if you read all that and didn't like it, hey, just my opinions!
