Does not live up to the hype

Age of Conan isn't exactly a 'bad' game, but it certainly does not live up to the hype which surrounded it before the release. There are bugs, lack of content, balance issues and patches that often do not make sense.
Worth getting the game if you are looking for something a bit different and don't mind waiting months or even years for a fully 'polished' version.

no dx10 yet, maybe in a few months, siege battles do not work/exist, everything is buggy, there is no skill as damage is based on items/gold farming. What you can afford determines your damage. There are constant spams from gold farmers. Very little to do. Low population so there are few people to do it with.
1-20 is great, awesome, spectacular, after that the game is a joke
AOC - MMORPG Disaster

AOC is the worst MMORPG I've have ever played in terms of the following items, in order or severity:
1) MASSIVE memory leak issue leading to constant lag by all but those that have way more processing power than required for the game.
2) Inability or refusal of Funcom (maker of AOC) to deal with the massive memory leak issue, instead focusing on ridiculous items to fix each week.
3) Horrible and lengthly list of game bugs, many many quests are broken, items don't work, crafting system in shambles.
4) PvP completely non-functional. "PvP" servers should be renamed "ganking" & PvE servers should be renamed "non-ganking" since this is the ONLY difference between the 2 types. The only PvP system that works is a premade scenario that is initiated and completed manually by someone advertising constantly in open chat for people to please join a premade group. If you enter a pug que for pvp minigames you can wait 9 hours or more for your turn.
5) Serious lack of raid content at game end. I hear lvl 80's all the time advertising "looking for anything to do" - desperation has set in.
6) Major patches occuring once a week now (at game release they had to have two patches a week). Most patches require more patches to fix the poorly thought out patches.
7) RAPIDLY declining membership to AOC make group play all but impossible.
8) Appears the beta testers were as drunk AND stupid as the game designers.
9) No auto-attack style or "Stick" command places melee class characters at a SEVERE disadvantage to casting type classes. Melee chain combos are extremely difficult to make work in a pvp situation.
10) Even the AOC core "fan boys" have been silent lately with the non-stop complaints about the severe problems with AOC being expressed daily in open channel chat.
Save yourself a headache and go outside and enjoy the real world for the next month while we await the release of Warhammer, since there is nothing worth a crap out there currently in the MMORPG world to play in......
Game is great but Amazon is disappointing

The game is really great. Nice combat system that requires skill and practice. It has the potential to become a competitive MMORPG game without the pain of endless item grinding (if they are going to follow this path in the end-game contents). I am giving 5 stars for the game based on my current experience.
However, Amazon has really disappointed me with their handling of the launch of this game. I pre-ordered the game almost two month ago through Amazon because I have been a long-time customer and satisfied with their services. Then it really went south. First of all, their pre-order bonus is a stupid lv 25 bow, which may not be useful at all for some classes, and will be ditched soon given that the max level is 80. Compared with nice mounts and bags offered by other venders, it is basically trash. Then the early-access emails were apparently sent out later than the other venders and gave those who ordered here less chance to get in. I was among the lucky ones that got in but I know quite a few guys did not make it. Now two days after the release, my game box is still not shipped yet. Without the box code I can not claim that stupid bow and I am already above lv 25. Worst of all if the box does not arrive before my early access expires (27th), my account will be frozen and I won't be able to play anymore. Guess what, just when I decided to get a box from local store instead, I found that it does not allow me to cancel this order now on Amazon.

I've been playing MMOs for a long time and have a fairly bad habit of trying every title in the genre: DAoC, WoW, Everquest II, Guild Wars, etc. None of them hold my attention longer than a month or so. We'll see if Age of Conan is any different but so far I'm REALLY enjoying the game. It's fun and violent - a perfect escape from the real world. It sort of has a way of bringing out your inner beast!
What isnt there to like about this ? except the UI

Firstly about a couple of reviews i have seen here, likely by Blizzard staff.
The graphics in this game are the best of any MMO to date, but if you put everything to max, your going to need something decent in the Video card area to support it (especially in group and PVP play).
The first 20 levels in Tortage, each NPC has speech which is very nice.
In fact i would go on to say this is the best intro to an MMO i have ever played (first 20 levels in Tortage).
PVP is optional, yes there are certain areas where its unavoidable, but you do not have to go to those areas. They are meant as PVP areas, where you can also PVE if you so wish (give the PVPers something to do in between wiping out enemy groups i guess).
The game itself is the best feel to any MMO in history. Graphically its brilliant, storylines are very good, and combat as i am really becoming to realize is second to none (im currently a level 30 barbarian).
Combat is based on three basic attacking strokes, front, left and right (2 more come at later levels). Combine these attacks with special attacks, to string combination attacks together for big damage and special effects.
Shields are controllable, by shields i mean defensive. For example, you have 3 shield points, you can put 1 or all in left, right or center. You get to defend against where your opponent attacks most, reducing damage and effects.
Similarly, your opponent has graphical shields shown, the heavier shielded in an area he is, the more you want to avoid it. Special attacks also use left, right and center attacks, so you have to pick your special attacks based on how your opponent is defending.
In summary, combat isnt just mash some keyes, you have to pay attention to the fight and act accordingly.
Now for the mature rating combat, if you like to have fatalities where you chop off body parts of your opponents in a killing move, or break their neck, or plunge your sword through their body and scream at them (a bunch of others for caster's and the like) then go right ahead.
If you DONT like it, or you dont want your kid to see it, you can turn it off in the SUBSCRIPTION website. So, if your paying for your kid to play, you can control the level of gore he gets to see.
Now for the bad points. The UI, User interface. It really is very poor compared to MMO's of the past couple of years. Cannot move popups around almost at all (a couple of exceptions). The map shows where quest items/people are, but not all quests pop up on the map, and there is nothing in the quest blurb to tell you where to go. In a group, little black dots appear on the map showing where your groupmates are, yet they are so hard to see.
But, you can really look past this and just play the game and have some serious fun.
Could have been a good game

When you first start playing this game, your first thought it probably "wow!". Well, that impression will change after about 10 levels. The combat system seems so new and fun for the first while, but is it really? Or are you back to button mashing extreme? No auto attack, directional attacks, and shielding (hit where the shields are lowest for max damage).
Well, it was a good attempt at making a good combat system. But this system has combos and everything, if you're standing still. So, what shall we do for PvP in this PvP based game? Stand still and not use our combos? Or let the casters trump over you? You run around whacking people with an ugly stick/sword/what ever else you could find, seems fun. Well, it will soon turn into a repetitive button mashing game. Especially after level 10 when you start venturing into the White Sands Island (PvP enabled, you will be camped no end) you will have to kill 50! 50 Pictish enemies.
The questing isn't really any different from World of Warcraft, EQ2, or any other MMO in fact. The only good quests are the destiny quests and the first 10 levels or so, then after that it's the same old kill XX/YY quests. This game doesn't even require you to read the quests! Just go to where it has marked it for you.
Graphics 3/5: They're stunning, if you have the machine to run it (even if you do, it won't run to what you would expect). Sadly, this game is very bad for the settings, you can go from a setting on low to high, and you will gain a lot of FPS. Or you won't notice a change. If you have a 9800GX2, ATI CF 4850 or higher, you have this game. If you have a single card, besides maybe the new Geforce cards, you will be begging the game to run. Where is the DX10 by the way?
Sound 5/5: The sound is amazing, get yourself a good sound system and you will be immersed with maybe the best sounding MMO out there. Can't say anything bad here.
Gameplay 1/5: Awful, awful, awful. Gets boring fast, and makes it very hard to play when you're tired. The game more turns into "remember my combos exactly!" No fun.
Oh I forgot to mention, there are memory leaks. You will be crashing a lot, and I mean A LOT! A system that exceeds FAR above the required will be crashing. Any fixes from Funcom? Nope. Wonderful.
This game had potential, but it just wasn't there. I am not going to pay for a game I have to force myself to play. No I am not going to play World of Warcraft, or any MMO right now. Lets just hope this game CAN prosper into something mightier, but right now it's still a beta.
Very disappointed

Tried to enjoy game for a month+, without success. Initial starting area is great, but then the grind from 25+ begins. Tried 3 different classes, leveling to 55, 43 & 37. Each had broken problems. PvP is a joke. Serves little purpose. Just random ganking. At least in other games you have different factions that are suppose to be your enemies... Oh, except for end game, which is a broken disaster. Won't even bother with discussing how broken crafting is. Another thing. Don't roll a female tank character, since the broken game mechanics will slow down your DPS by as much as 20%. This is still not fixed. Amazing. This game was rushed to market & should have NOT left beta.

The game is a pile of absolute rubbish, and the developers are working hard to set it on fire as well. Frequently unplayable, always unbalanced, and rarely fun past level 40 or so.
The latest in a stream of mediocre releases....

This game was very hyped and was in the top two in terms of anticipated MMORPGS for well over a year. Now that it has released one can readily identify its problems and they are all too familiar.
Whether you look at the ridiculous things that are broken like armor stats, spell buffs actually affecting you, or main quests that define zones being broken or if you look at how the game is moving backwards in terms of technological advances by reimplementing zoning in every aspect one can see the tell-tale signs of a game rushed towards a release it was not ready for.
The first, most obvious problem, will be the fact that this game requires FAR too many resources to play considering it is entirely instanced. It took the model of Everquest 1 and Guild Wars and combined those two in that not only is every possible building and zone seperated by 'zone walls' that equate to load screens, but once you enter the zone there are several 'instances' of that zone with new ones being created once a certain number of players fills the previous one. This simply kills communities as it is difficult to run into the same people or even simply find friends. When you factor in PvP this zone and instance system makes ganking and griefing much more difficult as people can instance or zone-hop at will and often engage in fighting only when they can zone out if they start to lose or if you bring friends to exact revenge. Years ago now it was considered a revolution that MMORPGs were coming out as seamless environments that no longer required zones and now here we go backwards in time to accomodate graphics that look great, but aren't really worth the tradeoff of community and the feel of a wide open world at your feet. Some would say they could overcome this inconvienance if it meant better performance etc, but rest assured you will need to upgrade your computer to play this game at anything above 15 FPS unless you have an absolutely top of the line system built within the last year. The trade off in performance just isn't there; in fact this game doesn't feel optimized at all at this point making for a more aggravating experience than anything else. Beauty is present but it comes at the expense of not only dollars but overall MMORPG environment that gives the genre its popularity.
Then there is the fact that this game has 80 levels which move along faster than they should totally negating the purpose in having extra levels. If in one week you can hit 50 there is a problem.
Class balance is completely off as usual for these types of games. How some of these classes get through beta testing is beyond me but as usual you have your classes that can't be beaten when played by compentent players like the Priests of Mitra. The scenario of a level 75 player being unable to take down a level 50 Priest of Mitra is just one example of this. So far I haven't seen any real organization on the PvP servers to do the matched guild and team fighting that was touted; this may come with time but for now it is just a Free for All gankfest with no purpose and no reward at all. You get a counter showing your pvp deaths and kills and pvp experience that I presume will be turned into something useful someday, but at present it is useless and pointless I might add.
This game is largely driven by quests as well. Lots of quests that are all easy enough that you never have to read them. Just click on any exclamation point you see on the mini map, breeze through meaningless dialogue, and follow the arrows to the quest encounter. Its exactly the same as guild wars only more tedious. The combat system is typical, nothing new accept new button sequences to push and you can dodge.
In the end there is not really much of anything new in this game. It is fresh and just released but there isn't really any innovation. I dont' really see much difference in this and Vanguard currently as both are beautiful games with lots of potential but still lacking overall.
My final assessment is this game will bore you quickly unless you are new to MMORPGs or are only coming from playing WoW. It may turn into the super-game it was touted to be with time, but it isn't there yet. It is also not for kids if you care anything about content, language, nudity etc for your little ones.
