Okay. This game gets a lot of good press. A lot of it. And frankly, it deserves a certain amount of praise--it's fun just to play, and that is a somewhat less common event in video games these days than maybe it ought to be. Even realizing that my 360 will have a version available (that I will most definitely buy, if only to get the achievement points and downloadable songs), I'm not sorry that I picked this up. It's a great game, and there's a very good chance you ought to buy it.
Not all about the game is good, though. The first thing you need to realize going in is that this is basically Dance Dance Revolution with a different controller. It's a rhythm game where you have to push buttons in something resembling time with the music (across the broad spectrum of guitar rock included here, there were some times I felt like I was playing notes I never heard on some of the difficulty settings, but that is to be expected). If you absolutely loathe that sort of thing, you're probably not going to get turned around here.
More importantly, however, that means the fundamental thing that sets this game apart from all of its other competitors in the new genre of "rhythm games" is the controller. You NEED the controller to have the best possible time with this game. Otherwise, it's a very entertaining rhythm game, but it's just ho hum. If you can get the bundle, you should buy the bundle.
Unfortunately, the controller is not the best that it could be. I will admit now that I have some problems with my hands and arms that make repetitive motion very bothersome after a while, and the controller that this game distributes with really tweaks whatever is wrong with my appendages. An hour of continuous playing will leave my left arm stiff and pained for hours to come. It is a testament to how enjoyable this game is that I continue to pick it up and play it (knowing, as I do, that it's going to hurt), but this IS a very real concern. If you have ergonomic health problems, you should probably see if you can find a store with a demo set up - and a lot of them will - that will let you play around with the guitar controller before you decide to buy.
As far as the song selection goes, it seems like they've done an adequate job. I would prefer to have songs from their original artists (several songs are obviously and recognizably covered - it's hard to confuse what you've got here with Kurt Cobain), but the covers are executed with enough competence that they don't detract too much from the overall game. Not having played the first one, I can't give you a comparison between the two set lists, except to say that this one seemed good enough to me.
My biggest gripe has to be with the game, though, would have to be the difficulty settings. It's fine to make a hard game - I'm okay with that - but I can easily envision some people not being able to make it through on even the Normal difficulty level, which is where you get the opportunity to start unlocking the extra songs and character models and guitars and whatever else have you. I think that perhaps it might have served the developers well to tone down the difficulty just a touch on Normal, if only to make the extra stuff you can get (with cash you earn through the Career mode) more accessible to the broader audience. I'm also baffled as to why the Bonus songs seem to be the hardest in the game when they're the ones from people that you have, more likely than not, never heard of. Seems to me like it would have been in those bands' best interest that their songs be a little bit more enjoyable to play through and less of a chore (currently I do not know what Raw Dog sounds like all the way through, as I have yet to play it without screwing it up), so that they might, you know, sell some more records, but I guess that's a discussion for the designers and their licensees to have.
On the whole, the game is terrific fun, and can be most people (I'm sure that some folks who are uptight about lyrics might have problems with some of it, though the profanity has been eliminated for the most part - which makes the inclusion of Killing in the Name seem a bit silly, but what do I know?).
Greatest game ever made for the PS2

If I HAD to choose one thing wrong with this game, I would say that it is just way too addicting! This game is probably the most fun I've ever had playing on any system.
The gameplay is great, the songs in the game are phenomenal and well known by everyone, and the learning curve is superb. You will find yourself rocking away hours of your time trying to get the coveted 5 stars on every song!
ROCKING OUT SOME MORE IS WORTH IT!

'Guitar Hero 2', the acclaimed sequel to the original is way better than the first. As you see, there are more... songs that are excellent (although "Jessica", "Crazy on You", and "Tattooed Love Boys" suck). It's a pretty fun experience to do and you can play it for hours. Yet, you still like it. There's now a cooperative mode and training that'll teach you how to play the SG guitar controller. The old characters are back, and there are two more characters to rock out with now! Old songs and songs from this decade mix into the playlist. It has some minor things that don't really step up to 'Guitar Hero'. They should've removed that ugly Lars Umlaut from both games. The game's songs aren't as heavy as they were in the first one. The graphics are better, however. I like this game so much, it's not funny. Everyone, with an appetite for rock, should play this game. The creators should make a 'Guitar Hero 3'! 'Guitar Hero 2' rocks!

This game is so entertaining even my daughter wanted to try it! The steps make it easy to follow and since there are several levels, you don't have to be an expert right off to have fun.

This is the reason I bought my playstation, and I couldn't be any more pleased. At last a game where you don't have to be born with a controller in your hand to be good at it. Let me say I am not your typical gamer person who really can master most games. Growing up a child of the 1980's I struggle with games that require super complex button pushing, I lack the reaction skills, and growing up with games that are more complex than pac man.
Guitar Hero II is just plain fun. You can start off in the easy level and really get to where you can practice enough to advance onto more complex songs. This game is very playable because as you get better you get more songs to play, and you can customize your own guitar hero more. The graphics are very good, and you can really jam with the soundtrack.

Addictive and amazingly fun for what it is. Although if you start out with bad eye hand coordination expect to suck until you get the hang of where the fret keys are and how fast you need to strum. Other than that I have spent hours playing and enjoy myself each time.
