wow! Better than expected.

(I only play singleplayer,.. so my review is only about that part.)

I knew Quake Wars was going to be a "Battlefield 2" -ish game,.. but it has surpassed being just a "me too" BF clone. There is so much more to Quake Wars that it's overwhelming to write it all down.

My Pc is a AMD dual core 6000, 3 GB of RAM, Geforce 7950 with 512 mb, and XP Home.

I can turn the graphics up all the way and have no lag or framerate drops. It looks truly stunning. Not quite as good as the screenshots of Unreal Tournament 3,.. but more subtle.

It requires no on-line activation to install or play singleplayer. The CD key isn't even needed for singleplayer. The greatest part about singleplayer is that you get the full content instead of a "bite sized" version like in BF2. You get the full maps with plenty of bots. (I have my bot amount set to unlimited).

Now for the actual gameplay. You can be human or Strogg.(The invading half-cyborg aliens from Quake 2 and Quake 4.) The Humans have mostly futuristic conventional weapons and vehicles,.. while the Strogg have sci-fi weapons and vehicles. There are airstrikes, artillery, and even the "Hammer of Dawn" from Gears of War is a weapon. I've only played as the humans so far,.. so I can't comment on the Strogg gameplay.

The different classes have more meaning than in BF2,.. as each map is objective based instead of just Conquest(where you hold a strategic point to reduce opposing teams tickets). The objectives make each map more like a campaign mission than just a skirmish. The maps range from bombed out cities to forests to snowy hills to dusty, rocky landscapes with industrial complexes. There are actually large indoor portions of the maps too.

You can deploy different turrets,.. build gun nests, bridges, guard towers. Each team has territory it can capture as it completes objectives and pushes the front-line forward.

The bot AI is adjustable. You can make them dumb like in BF2,.. or you can make them human-like in the options menu.

You can gain experience and move up in rank! As you move up in rank the other teammates who are under your rank will follow orders if they aren't already busy. There are LOTS of orders, commands, and requests. Communication with your team is vital here. It's easy too. Just a click of the mouse wheel brings up a little menu on the right side of the screen that scroll though and click on anything you need to say. The bots ARE listening and will either do as you ask,.. decline,.. or acknowledge.
Also,.. as you gain XP you unlock more than just weapons. You get perks like extra ammo clips,.. larger clips,.. longer sprint,.. higher jumping,..higher health limit... vehicle drops (send me a tank!) and more.

But this is all just feature listing. Let me tell you about my actual playing experience.

In all new games(that are any good),.. there is a certain period of "buzz" that you get at first as your mind and senses are stimulated with new and cool experiences. When I first launched Quake Wars, I picked the Outskirts map and picked the human side. This map is a ruined city with rain and bombed out buildings. It reminds me of something straight out of the Terminator movies. I was following my team mates giving them cover fire towards the first objective.

Suddenly from behind one building came a Strogg air ship that looked like something out of the Matrix. It started blowing the crap out of my teammates and I took cover in a bombed out building that had the roof blown off. All I had was an assault rifle and I opened fire and took cover as it strafed around the building launching missles at me. I emptied a full clip into it and actually took a third of its health down. I then called for back up and some missles came from out of sight and blew the Strogg air ship to pieces. I then got an award in Battlesense or something. It felt like those future war scenes in the Terminator films.

This game is atmospheric. There is a mood with each map.

So ID took the BF2 gameplay and added extra polish, the Quake 4 theme, .. and so much more content and cool things that it does not feel like a knock-off at all. You rarely are just standing at a flag capturing a control point. You're always doing something or helping your teammates do something.

I have yet to notice any bugs or glitches. ID has great standards of quality.

First of all, you have to throw away what you may know about other online shooter and accept Quake Wars for what it strives to be: A multi-player shooter with an emphasis on teamwork and objectives in the quake universe...meaning it is NOT Battlefield 2. This is not a bad thing at all. At all =) So let's jump into it shall we? The first thing you should notice (and what people seem to care for the most, seemingly over gameplay..)are the graphics. They're good. We're not talking 'Crysis' level here, but they aren't shabby in the slightest. If you have the system to run it as intended (the reqs aren't that steep), then you should have a lot of eye candy to admire.
Next, the gameplay: Loads of fun. Basically it revolves around you playing one of two sides in a global conflict that pits the 'Strogg' and the 'GDF' (see the quakewars website for backstory, etc.) against one another in 12 different maps that can be played individually or as sets of 3 in a 'campaign' mode. These aren't typical 'shoot em' up' maps where all you do is mindlessly frag each other all day, but rather scenario and objective based conflicts where each team has goals to accomplish throughout the fight. You accrue experience as you play, which in turn, grants you special abilites or powerups the longer you are in a match. Note however, that once your session is done, you lose those special power-ups and begin anew the next time you play, thus keeping the balance between hardcore gamers and beginners to a fairly in check by not allowing the vets to have 'uber' weapons from the start against a bunch of green nooblets. However, the game does keep track of your basic stats (kills, deaths, ratios, how good you are with this class vs. that class, etc.), and awards you medals based on performance and overall accrued experience.
You choose a class to play on your respective team, which though you can play as both sides, they are not mirrors of each other like other multiplayer games. Each side has the same relative 'stock' classes (assault, medic, etc.), but they differ in abilities and though each plays very differently from the next, they are counterweighted so as to give a varying feel, without tipping the scales on one side over the other. You may feel different going into this game if you have a lot of experience playing titles similar to Battlefield 2, because the pace is definitely more hurried (Still slower than Unreal Tournament..but faster than the Battlefield series).
As far as vehicles go, you'll notice that they are not the 'END ALL' juggernauts as they sometimes are in other games. Infantry is quite powerful and can take all the vehicles out given enough time, thus making vehicles tough, but not exposing you to the 'spam fests' and 'uber death machines' you may have been used to in other games. The controls are quite easy to learn and with a few minutes practice anyone can be a reasonably good pilot. They are varied and a blast to commandeer.
In any case, if you enjoy a deep and satisfying multiplayer game (and are tired of the same old, same old), look no further. I couldn't go into as much depth in this review as I'd have liked for lack of time, but needless to say this game has a truckload of variety, tactics, firefights and weaponry to keep you gunning for a long time. Amazing game. Unlike Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, this game has teams which are drastically different. Vehicles on land air and water. And deployables!

Amazing team play. If you're coming from W:ET, you may not like it first hand. But if you just hang on to it, you'll like it even better.

And the other main reason why I bought this game is 'coz it runs natively on linux.

Well I've played all of the Unreal Tournament games and most of the quake games so I'm a fair judge of FPSs. This game doesn't really have many maps or modes of play. It tries to add some elements from Battlefield 2142 but kinda fails, you don't even keep you extra skill from one battle to the next, so you start from scratch each time. The strog have vehicles that make the human ones look like jokes in how fast they fire and how much damage they do. The graphics are really nice though and it doesn't seem to tax my graphics card as much as some other games do. For all you get in it, it should be a mid budget game of $29.95 and not more.

I'm running this game on an older machine and it plays very well. I'll describe the specs of my PC running Win XP:

Athlon XP 3200 (downclocked to 2500 because I have chintzy ram)
ATI X800 All-in-Wonder video card
1 GB of ram
Cable modem

I'm able to play the game at 1280 by 1024 and get 20fps while playing online. Many people will probably consider this unacceptable, but it works for me.

The game is really new, so a lot of the people playing online have no idea of what they should be doing in terms of the objectives, etc. Fortunately, the XP reward system in the game should motivate people to actually play the required player classes to complete obectives. I get sick of public Enemy Territory (pre-Quake Wars game) servers where everyone wants to snipe.

The maps bundled with the game are stunning. The strogg (alien team) have more technological advantages than humans in the game, so I can see people wanting to always play that side. So far as yet, I haven't encountered any bugs in the game.

Completely underrated. Fantastic team-based FPS.

I can't believe how many people don't play this game. The gameplay is so addictive I'm reluctant to play it because I know I won't be able to stop until I've passed out.

Every time I play the same campaign, the outcomes are completely different. This is because the game is totally contingent upon team dynamics. If your team has good communication, proper class distribution, and the right skills you will win, but if your team is comprised of a bunch of lone-stars, you will get no where. This forces you to play through many different classes, and use many different skills from infiltration, shooting, sniping, driving vehicles, creating traps, etc.

The distinctions between Strogg and GDF are subtle but make a profound difference in gameplay. The primary weapons for each side offer unique benefits and drawbacks (such as the different methods of reloading between the lacerator and assault rifle). The strogg technician and GDF medic are parallel classes but play totally differently. Each side also has different vehicles and special abilities that create a well-balanced, yet diverse playing experience.

The teamwork in Quake Wars is much more intuitive and easy to comprehend than BF2's. The objectives are clearly laid out, and you can choose which objective you want to pursue. It is also made clearer by the fact that the objectives are typically connected to your class, which creates distinct roles for every character and ultimately facilitates teamwork because everyone knows what they're supposed to do.

There is also a great element of strategy in this game. Where you drop your defense-turrets, how and when you call in artillery strikes, etc. make the game feel somewhat like an RTS. There is so much depth to the gameplay.

Finally, the graphics are so nice to look at and the game is playable on older machines (albeit on low settings). However, even if you are dropping the image quality, you'll forget about the graphics because you'll be so immersed in the actual game - which is something many recent FPS games lack!

Prequel to Quake 2 and Quake 4

A literal prequel to Quake 2 and Quake 4, and a spiritual successor to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, "Enemy Territory: Quake Wars" is a team-and-class-based first person shooter.

The game revolves around the GDF - the human Global Defense Force - defending Earth against the Strogg, the murderous aliens encountered as enemies in Quake 2 and 4. Fighting in locations all over the world, the GDF must hold the Strogg back. Gameplay can be online or with bots, and usually takes place as a "campaign": three battles in similar locations (for example the "European" campaign or the "African" campaign.

There are five classes in the game. Soldiers carry explosives, and also have the widest choice of weapons in the game - regular assault rifles, machine guns, shotguns, and rocket launchers, as well as a stronger pistol than normal. Field Ops can deploy artillery pieces and call in artillery (from the deployed weapon) and airstrikes. Furthermore, GDF Field Ops can give ammo to their fellow soldiers, while "Oppressors", the Strogg equivalent, can deploy tactical shields. Engineers can build automated turrets - either anti-personnel, anti-vehicle, or anti-artillery (shooting down incoming shells) - as well as repair vehicles. Finally, Covert Ops act as the sneaks and snipers of the game. With access to gadgets like radar stations, smoke grenades, and mini-radar devices (for the GDF) and teleporters and remote drones (for the Strogg), the Covert Ops is more based on stealth and intelligence. In addition, there are many vehicles

Objectives are both map and class-based. For example, on one map an engineer might be required to rebuild a bridge so the unit can advance. Later, a cover ops might need to disable a shield generator. More mundane objectives are also available; things like building or destroying deployables (depending on which class you are) rewards the player with experience basically for playing his class right. The maps have a lot of variety, and they cover the whole world - from African valleys to European plains to Japanese sewer systems. Their objectives tend to be simple, but require the coordinated efforts of the team and all its members. Each of the classes gets experience from completing objectives and destroying enemies that carries over a three-level campaign. Leveling up gets you new weapons, increases your class abilities, and your general stats.

The graphics are decent, but even turned up all the way, they're not extraordinary. The sound is less impressive, and sounds really unprofessional. Neither is really a bonus for the game, but they're not really bad enough to distract, either. As a whole, this game has some neat ideas and gameplay, but there are a few little things that drag it down.

I been home with broken leg for two months and I've been playing this game, beta then demo, a lot. I have more than a hundred hours experience. It is like BF 2142. I like the game but I see one problem which will keep me from buying. No good comm system. Clanners are using TeamSpeak, etc., non clanners can't compete. With Teamspeak and your clan members you will own all. So makes a very one sided multiplayer experience. If you are in a clan buy, if not be ware you will not make many points.
Also takes above average intelligence, so if not B student you will not be happy. ( Like my brother, who quit after two days ).
Single player bots are as dumb as dirt. So single player is a one day event. Could have been 4 stars with VOIP.

This is one of the first games I've bought for pc in years, and I'm loving it. Even since Half Life 1 and Team Fortress I've been looking for a good team based first person shooter with different character classes. There are several character classes to choose from in this game, each of which has different abilities and options. Each of them is fairly easy to get going with, though it took a little while to learn how to use some of the abilities. While you can play each class as you like, an experience system is built in to actually enhance your characters as you perform well.
There's a depth to this game that isn't apparent at first. The experience system is very cool, and I recommend you read up on it online. When performing well, your character actually improves, and sometimes gets new abilities. The game is played in 'campaigns', which consist of 3 levels each. The idea is that by the time you get to the third level, you'll have gained enough experience to kick some serious butt. Assuming you play well, that is. One of the things that seems to really help, and which of course helps you win missions, is team play. You really have to play each level several times to get a grip on all the different objectives, and you'll find it works best if you play your part all the way through, and don't just always try to be the one to complete all objectives. Playing support characters, such as medics, can be pretty rewarding, and can definitely change the tide of the battle.

Another cool thing is that if you're playing on the right server (they're marked), all your stats are recorded and available online. You can check to see how you stack up in various categories, and there are medals to be earned for completing objectives.

The latest update to the game added VOIP support, so you can talk to team members directly. It doesn't seem to be used all that much yet, but already I'm seeing it add a new level to the game, as it's much easier to organize attacks.

Starting with the latest update, however the game and my firewall no longer get along. I'm constantly disabling it/enabling it to get into the game. This is really annoying, and I haven't found a workaround (I've tried adding it to safe programs, etc...)

I'm hoping that some new levels will be available for download at some point. Each level is pretty big and really takes time to master, but I think in a few months I'll want some fresh air.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a great mix of games all in one

This game is so much fun to work as a team if you have the team to do it with. It brings me back to the days of the Tribes series with more sufficient ways to dealing with communication between teammates. If Tribes ever merged with this game we would have the best game ever made.
