Graphically this game is a solid A, very nice rendering of light elements and textures. The transition between storyline vignettes and actual gameplay is fantastic throughout. Often you are dropped right into the middle of a scene, almost taking you by surprise (sometimes you might be in the middle of a battle!). Kudos to the design team for this type of play. The characters are rendered very well and move fluidly. The fighting is pretty straight forward and the AI is pretty good for most enemies. The level ups and moves available are also excellent. The game follows the plot of the movie/book for the most part and you are hurled into epic battles and other missions such as protecting frodo. Different levels require various characters whose abilities you develop in typical RPG fashion (ie experience points for defeating enemies). The wrinkle here is the rating you get for dispatching your foes. You can get "fair", "Good", "Excellent" or "Perfect". You gain more experience points for better executed attacks. These points are spendable in between rounds as upgrades for either your character or the entire party. The only thing stopping this game from being a complete home run is that, while it is fun and entertaining, it is way to easy to conquer.
The bonus featurettes (sort of DVD style - unlocked after certain levels are beaten) are also a nice addition, expecially for a fan of the series in general.

This game is awesome. The Graphics are perfect and the game play is fluid.
It starts slow because you don't have any upgrades. It's the best when you can play any charecter on any level with all the upgrades. This game has it all.

This game is one of the best games I've ever played in my life. First off, you can use five characters (Gandalf the White Wizard, Gimli, Aragorn, Legolas and Sam), but don't let that fool you! Later on, you find FOUR secret characters (Frodo, Pippin, Merry and Faramir). Sometimes, it is a VERY difficult game. Don't forget that you can do two-player mode, though! Overall, the graphics rock!!! Not to mention the awesome attacks (my favorite one is when Legolas shoots two arrows AT THE SAME TIME and they go right through the enemy and burn them to death), and even turn invisible using ANY HOBBIT!!! You MUST get this game. It definitely deserves five stars.
great battles...

I think this RPG was ok, but the gebining was un bearable. You have to sit through about fifteen minutes of preview, then you watch the begining of the battle of helm's deep. then all of a sudden, gandalf is riding down the hill, and he turnes into animation, and you begin the battle. then you beat the level, and watch another long movie, and so on!
Greatness, but no perfection.

Gameplay and fighting are exemplary. But the minimal flaw in graphics and realism take away that last star. Firstly, this game is not as similar to the movie as you may have heard. Much of the game should have taken place in the Two Towers game. Frodo and Sam actually have to kill many Orcs and vilians which definately crosses the line of unrealism. You may also buy different arrows and deadly combos, you can set enemies on fire, set them frozen, and shock them. There is also an added feature of Cooperative play, where you can play story mode with a friend (split screen). You can only do this if you beat the regular story game. This game is worth renting if you are a hardcore gamer, because you may be able to beat the game in less than 5 days. (...)
Should have been the game of the year!

This game is perfect. The graphics are flawless. The combos are good. If you get stuck right away on the first levels, dont worry. All you have to do is save the current game, start a new one, and play the practice level over and over and over, until you get the hang of it. It is quite a challenge. One of the best games. The best part is, if you don't have an Xbox, you can get it for gamecube and PS2.

I think that the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a very fun game. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. There are 13 levels plus 2 unlockable ones. There are three paths: the Path of the King, the Path of the Wizard, and the Path of the Hobbit. On the Path of the King you can play as Aragorn, Legolas, or Gimli. On the Path of the Wizard you play as Gandalf, and on the Path of the Hobbit you play as Sam (except for the last level which you play as Frodo). After completing the game, you can go back and play the levels as all of the charactars, plus three unlockable ones. After you get to level ten as Sam, Gandalf, and either Legolas, Aragorn, or Gimli, you can play the two unlockable levels. The only bad things are: 1) The game is actually a bit short, and 2) A lot of the footage is from The Two Towers. The good things are: 1) Very fun gameplay, 2) Excellent graphics, 3) Great sound effects (there are even lines from the movie playing throughout the game!), and 4) In this game you can do cooperative play. I definitely recommend this game to all LOTR fans.
