I purchased this game just last nite, and was instantly hooked. At first, you must go this long intro, which is a little bit boring. Then your off starting your jobs. You are a young stubborn boy named Ryodo. Your first job is to escort Elena to point A safely. Along the way, you battle monsters. Normally, you try to avoid fighting because it's kind of boring, but in Grandia 2 I looked forward to fighting the monsters. The graphics are simply amazing, and the music is a nice mix. All in All, this totally has gotten me into the RPG games. Thank you, Grandia.

Grandia has the best battle system ever devised...

Truly this game is the best in terms of its battle system which is a mix of real time strategy and turn based attack. Basically you have a meter that runs that shows each character including enemies, time remaining before executing an attack or spell. You strategise by attacking certain enemies who may be casting spells on multiple party members etc. You can also chose from 3 different AI settings to allow the battles to play out without you. But, you wont use it much because it is too much fun to battle. I actually only missed 2 chances to battle enemies. Another great thing about this game is that it resembles its prequel and games like Chrono Trigger (for the SNES), by showing you the enemies on screen prior to battle and uses information gathered by how you approached them to set the stage in the fight. If you come from behind then you get an advantage, if they come from behind then they get the advantage and if you stalemate then you both have equal opportunity. With magic and attribute books at your disposal you can make the main character the magician or fighter or healer, the customization of each character is not limited to a class. Truly leading edge rpg battle system, the likes Square will eventually have to rip off. The story is predictable but interesting. The characters are very well rounded and you care for them. The monster designs as well as the protagonists are extremely beautiful. The polygon models and skins look amazing and totaly destroy any other rpg on the market. All in all a very enjoyable experience.

I beat this game yesterday. It is the best game I have ever played. The graphics are the wonderful. This game shows what the Dreamcast can REALLY do. The gameplay is beautful. The bosses are challenging. The characters are funny and cool. The cinemas are exactly like the movies! The game is a heartfilling adventure. With love, careing, and friendship all mixed into one. When all of these things come out of the workshop. You have Grandia 2.

A very fun game to play...

This game will suck you in the first few minutes you play it, the battle system is interesting and the way in which you level up is unique. You learn techniques and enhance abilities by gaining SC (special coins) at the end of each battle. You learn spells the same way by using MC (magic coins), which you also receive at the end of each battle. Exp. and Gold are the same way too. Monsters are visible on the screen, rather than random battles, they can avoided as well. However, if you choose to fight every monster encountered throughout the game, you'll notice the end-bosses to be very easy. Also, you'll be able to max out your spells, techniques, and abilities by the end of the game.

The VA (voice acting) is brilliant, if you remember the VA when playing Resident Evil for Playstation, then you'll definately be blown away by how quickly Grandia II produces each conversation so there are very few 'long pauses'.

The story and the plot are something that quickly drags this game down. They are not too incredibly terrible, but they could definately need improvement. The story is linear, which in turn means this game has no replay value. Once you beat the game thats it, so there arent too many 'secrets' to be found out. The plot is different than most rpg's, yet in some aspects the same. I think the games creators had something against religion, or at least they tried to portray that. Whatever they were trying to get across was very confusing towards the end of the game, I think they may have tried to wrap it up, so to speak, so the game wasnt spanned on 2 discs. Anyways, you can take it for what it is, your typical rpg in which you try to save the world from utter destruction.

If your hard up for a good story I give this 3 stars. If you just want a fun rpg to play, I'd say between a 4 and 4 1/2.

Wow!

Truly Grandia II has to be credited as the most successful rpg game on the dreamcast system to date. I am speaking from the visual aspect, storyline, and creative gameplay point of view. Unlike the rpg on the playstation that give you terrible polygon character formations, and simply hope to keep you interested with an explosion of cinema scenes; Grandia II brings to you a exciting plot with an almost never-ending battle. The beautiful visuals that are seen in the game will send chills down your back. But the battle system is by far the most impressive aspect of this game. I love how they drop the whole "I hit them, they hit me" thinking. Instead you are put into a war-like situation with everyone moving to different areas of the battle arena. But anyway it is really a great game!

I really liked Grandia II, but I had to give it only 4 stars because of the weak story line. The battles were fun, but they got kind of tedious. In the beginning, the battles were simple, and you fought with only Ryudo. Later Elena was added, until finally you were controlling four characters. The amount of personality the characters had was amazing. The ending was weak, but it was still interesting, because you could see how the characters were in a year from when the game ended. The game took me about 40 hours to complete. My favorite part of the game was how you could buy new spells and skills with points from battles. Two hints if you're stuck: *all the characters have one move that has a cancel effect, as soon as you have enough skill points, get that skill up to five stars. When you do this, if you select the move, it will take place immediately, giving you an advantage over your enemies. *Also, if you get stuck fighting Melfice, keep at it, because he is by far the hardest character to fight all game.

Long Awaited Dreamcast Must Buy RPG

For a long time, Dreamcast was void of any good, well made, creative and appealing RPG. Then, in one month, both Grandia 2 and Skies Of Arcadia were released and fans of a great 60 hour game cheered. Debates rage over which is better, but both are must play games.

Taking up many years after the first Grandia and containing none of the characters from the original, the tale begins as a ranger meets with a princess who ends up being a lot more trouble than he previously expected. What started out to be a simple bodyguard job ends up being the adventure to die for as the group add new members and defeat a huge religious menace underminung the inhabitants of the planet.

The fighting sequences are the most addictive part of this game. It takes place on a three dimensional battleground with characters changing position after each attack. This makes for incredibly interesting battles. The magic effects are incredible, although they do run a little long after you're seen them a hundred times, as with most RPG's.

The characters are as adverse and mythical as any Final Fantasy game and your group of four warriors each have great reasons for wanting to fight off the enemy and they play off of each other rather well. Each has unique fighting styles, and the strategy involved in defeating bosses and gathering strength are well thought out, except for the final boss, who is quite easy for your team to beat by the time you reach it.

The graphics are very well detalied and fully realized in 3D, especially the homes that you can enter. The dungeons aren't randomly generated as in Evolution. Each area is creative and unique.

This game is a must for RPG fans who own a Dreamcast, and a system seller for those who don't. Get a Dreamcast and play this game, you won't regret it.

Great Game! Must-have for Dreamcast gamers!

I love video games and yet for some reason I had never picked up an RPG, but after subscribing to a Dreamcast mag. and reading a review about Grandia 2, I decided I'd give a try. It was amazing! Not only did it have one of the best storylines and great gameplay, but the battle system was incredible! Never before had I actually had to think about what I was going to do next. And the graphics were spectacular! Crisp and clear with beautiful color, they truly set a limit for the Dreamcast

console (well, besides Soul Calibur, Shenmue, Resident Evil Code:Veronica, ect., ect.). So basically, Grandia 2 succeeds in all aspects of gameplay, including great music, and although long, it is a must-have for any Dreamcast gamer. I can't wait to play Skies of Arcadia!

One of the Best

This is one of the best RPGs i have ever played. The graphics are very very good and the story line is also very good, but it is predictable, I was guessing what was going to be happening 5 minutes before it did. The fighting style of the game is totally awsome, the characters run around and can dpdge enimies (unlike Final Fintasy), also they have a combo icon which is a normal attack but they try to hit the enemy more than once. The magic and special abiities are very good, you get the commmon elements (fire, water, ice, earth, grass, wind, and explosion), the special abilities are different for each character. The powerup of each magic spell and ability is different from any other game I've played, after each battle you get the usual experience points and gold then special coins(sc) and magic coins(mc), you then use those to power up and buy magic on mana eggs, you do the same thing with sc exept pick the character. The characters are very unique and different. You get a total of 5 characters, which join your party as you progress through the game. The bottom line is BUY THIS GAME!! IT IS THE BEST RPG!

Great Dreamcast RPG

Hard luck PS2 owners, we had this first! Grandia 2 is a bright and innovative RPG which requires the player to really think about strategy desicions during its many battle sequences. All reviewers refer to this as the games best selling point, and after playing, I would have to agree. The battle system involves an on screen timer guage for each character (and enemy)that lets you see when each one is ready to act, which means that you can make judgements based on predicting the enemies attack pattern. At each command input, you can choose between a variety of full on attacks, a countering move to interrupt an enemy onslaught, a dodging move which lets you run to a different area of the battle field, or a defensive stance to lower damage taken. It makes for incredibly involving and enjoyable gameplay, as you try and time your best attacks to stop the enemies before they can do the same to you. Why Squaresoft could not manage a similarly complex system in their excellent RPG games is a real pity, but this idea puts them to shame, and that's saying something.
Well with all this effort applied to the fighting, is there any part of the game that falls short? Well, yes, but not much. Firstly, the battle system is innovative, but the plot sure ain't! A rough and surly mercenary teams up with a sweet and pious young girl in a quest to rid the land of a huge evil force that threatens to end all existance on the planet. On the way they team up with various other characters, blah blah.... Nothing new there. The other thing is the graphics, which although very pleasant are a little on the cute side for my taste, and the character models are pretty unimpressive, especially as they have no noses and mouths!! One other drawback is that there is no incentive to explore the non-combat areas or talk to characters you meet, as tems are never found by searching the town fields, and speaking to random townsfolk never, ever, turns up any useful information or sub quests, so gameplay can get boring in between fights. But the battle system is what makes this game, and I was pleased to see a tough and drawn out final sequence that come at the games climax, and at times, I despaired that the final boss would ever come!
For Dreamcast owners, it all boils down to a tie breaker between this game and Skies of Arcadia. For real innovation, and graphical splendour, sorry it has to be Arcadia (those ship battles - now thats a new idea!), but for a traditional RPG that calls for real fighting strategy (Arcadia's battles have to be its least impressive aspect), Grandia 2 is the winner. As long as you don't mind characters with no faces.
