Good with some reservations

I bought Ace Combat 5 at full price (...), its a good solid air combat game. Looks great sounds wonderful. Movies look really good. My only complaints are the characters suck, looks good but are annoying(Maybe something got lost in the translation from Japanese to English). And some of the missions I've flown(I've only completed 7 missions so far) are pretty stupid. Like Escort a large plane through Anit-Air-Arty gaps. So I have to fly around large circles... If you played AC-4 then you should be use to the absurd combat missions. Unless you really liked AC4 and can't wait for AC5 then buy it. I did, I don't regret it, But then again I love flight sims.

This games graphics top almost all PS2 titles. The sheer speed of the jets are remarkable and the size of the levels are incredible. There can be many missiles chasing you while you gun down an enemy fighter. The game is intense and I recommend this game to anyone who was a fan of Ace Combat 4.

I just LOVE this game.I am a huge fan of the ace combat series.I have played ace combats 2,3,4 but this one was better than all of them put together.it is a long game but the gameplay was supererb overall.it does have some missions that are difficult at first but the more you play them the easier the get.I have yet to finish the game but i am already hooked on it.

Good for Grandsons

I bought this game for my grandson, aged 13, who is taking flying lessons. He played it non-stop while he was visiting at Thanksgiving and really liked it. It is not as bloody and gory as a lot of games (most of them) for teens, and he was able to figure it out on his own, and enjoyed pretty much all of it, especially "buying" different aircraft. I much prefer this game over the ones which stress killing people in graphic detail, and even his mother, who is totally opposed to bloody games, approved it.

Stuck on a level

I love the game, but I always get stuck on trying to shoot down the ARKBIRD on one of the later missions. The one where the pilot drops out it keep s shooting lasers.

Quite Challenging!

Ace Combat 5 presents quite a challenge {for me at least}, the graphics are realy good and I find the game somewhat difficult in that the action is fast and furious. Objectives are a little vague, sometimes not knowing which enemies to concentrate on to complete the mission! However Namco's support offers on line live chat, email and telephone to assist in mission completions. I recomend this flight sim to all who enjoy air combat, I only wish they offered a PC version!

Five for (Dog)Fighting

Ace Combat 5 is another entry in a long running and mostly pleasing series, but even after so many iterations the game is going strong.

Ace 5's biggest asset is its graphics, which are nothing short of stunning- even for a PS2. The visuals, combined with a wide array of real-world aircraft to choose from, will have you believing you really are a top fighter pilot in minutes.

The game's rather lengthy campaign (27 missions) takes place in various locales showcasing beautifully detailed terrains. The missions themselves provide variety by mixing up objectives including destroy everything in sight, stealth recon sans weapons, escort, and a follow-the-leader test of your maneuvering skill.

My biggest frustration came in the form of a mission consisting of a boring afterburner flight to a cutscene, followed by more boring afterburner to the objective. The objective was a foe who could take a serious beating while doling out plenty of punishment. A tight time limit pushed me over the edge. I don't mind a good challenge, but don't force me to endure several minutes of uneventful button mashing for every attempt. Apart from that, the rest of the game is a good balance of difficulty.

Summary:
Overall 7.5/10 for being a solid playing, visually stunning fighter sim that squarely scratches the itch for good ol' fashioned dogfights. Lack of significant innovation impedes a higher ranking.

Pros:
+Graphics, graphics, graphics!
+Dozens of real-world aircraft to fly
+Fair amount of variety in mission objectives

Cons:
-Lack of innovation
-Campaign drags on a little long, even with the varying objectives
-Story is a bit cheesy

A lot of fun.

Many of my impressions have already been expressed in the other reviews here. I will make a few brief observations. Compared to Ace Combat 4, I find the clarity of the visuals, with the plane itself, to be less sharp. I don't know why, I bought this expecting them to be even sharper than AC4. The background story line I thought was not as interesting as AC4, either. I can take or leave the CGI moving characters of the story. The radar screen is difficult to read, especially compared to AC4. The dull green arrowhead for your plane is too easy to confuse with the wingmen and sometimes with the enemy if you only have time for a quick glance. At times, trying to adjust the scale on the radar screen doesn't add any clarity at all. So, I think the radar screen presentation in some missions really needed some further work. A silly point to bring up, given that it's really kind of "silly" to care this much about a video game, but even in the realm of sci fi and fantasy in the game itself, I don't logically follow how some missile bursts will blow up all friendly aircraft below 5000 feet (for example) but not harm, at all, any enemy aircraft or ships. Basically, though, I very much enjoyed this game and certainly recommend it to anyone, though I thought AC4 in some ways was superior.

At first I got worried, becouse the training part is really easy so I wasn't expecting much of the game, but as I started doing the missions it really got me interested and now I can't wait to get home and play it. Great graphics, you really feel like you're in the jet seat.
Excelent game.
