Other games simpy cannot compete with such a great game. This is a perfect game -- everything feels polished and well presented. The story, while having some dorky voice actors, is rich and compelling at it's much more involving than, say, Ace Combat 4, which relied on indirect cutscenes every few missions.
This is basically what Ace Combat 4 should have been; it's long, it's fun, it's got a ton of replay value, and it's definitely one of the few reasons that I'm glad I have a PS2.
In short, although it's basically an upgraded Ace Combat 4, for fans of the series or newcomers, it's one of the greatest games on the PS2 in my opinion, if not one of the best arcadey flight games ever created.

I am not a huge Ace Combat or flight sim fan. I didn't play the first three for the PS1, and Im not terribly fond of deep flight sims. Their intricacy is far too much for me to enjoy the game. However, Ace Combat 4 was one of only a few absolute favorites for the PS2. Well, Namco managed to improve greatly over that game with Ace Combat 5. Despite not much changing, Ace Combat 5 improves with little things here and there that enhance the experience. The controls are the same, as is the feel and power of most of the air craft. The arcade like simulation gameplay is as deep as it has always been and is extremely fun. What causes this game to excel over it's predecessor is its much more cinematic storytelling, it's improved edge of your seat moment, and the control over your squadron.
If you played Ace Combat 4, you know about the kinds of cinematic, adrenaline pumping moments that the games can have. AC5 continues this to greater effect, including a finale that is one of the most exciting moments of any PS2 game ever created. The story is also, as mentioned, greatly improved. There are several twists and turns, and although the story is less personal than AC4, it plays on its grander scope with a cast of many characters, each of whom have multifaceted personalities. The missions are challenging and fun and most are varied enough to defeat the repetitivness that somewhat plagued the fourth game. Despite this good attempt, the game does have a slight repetitive streak. There are some seemingly useless missions and others that are a bit too easy. You should, over the course of the game, however, find most of the missions to be fun and keep your interest going.
If you're looking for a fun, adrenaline pumping, exciting time, AC5 won't dissapoint. With awesome dogfights, wonderful music, great graphics, and a deep, involving story and cast, AC5 should keep any PS2 owner content. Hopefully, you will find AC5 as one of your favorite PS2 games too.

After reading other reviews, I have to ask...are we playing the same game?
The gameplay is monotonous. Very little dogfighting...just missle lock and fire, which gets old pretty fast.
Often the mission objectives are unclear, and so you just shoot at everything you can target...I was about to say everything that moves, but you can't shoot at everything.
Your 'wingmen' are not 'there' for you. You're basically flying/fighting solo, though you can give orders...big deal.
Makes me wonder if the game developers intended that feature, but either ran out of money or time in meeting their production deadline.
I guess one star overall is unfair...the graphics, sound, and story are good.
The flight model is ok, not great. For example, in doing a 'nose-over' near the ground, if you realize you're too near the ground to complete the maneuver, you can't reverse the maneuver to recover...you simply crash. That's annoying.
I guess I don't like it mainly because I've played far better PC air combat simulators...well, better because of the flight/combat model, not because of the graphics, story, or sound.
Wouldn't it be great if all the good developers were on the same team? It seems if you want a good combat simulator, buy from one company...if you want a good story, buy from another. What would it take to get the best developers on the same page, working for the same company? A lot of money, I guess.
Speaking of money, I'm really glad I didn't buy this game when it sold for $50+ But I am stuck with paying $20. It might be worth $10...maybe.

Ace Combat 4 was an amazing game but after about 3 years it gets boring. Finally Ace Combat 5 is taking off and looks almost unreal. The graphics are unbelievable and there are so many new features. Now you can talk to and control your whole squadron plus it's online. When online you can get your own squadron with other people and battle it out in intense dogfights. I recommend pre-ordering this game because the day it hits the shelves is the day it gets sold out. Buy it now!!!

I eagerly awaited the release of this game and overall, I'm dissapointed.
This game just isn't as much fun as the last version. In the previous version most of the missions had specific goals you and your wingmen had to accomplish. This game has several, not just 1-2, missions where not only do you have to accomplish certain goals but do it in a specific time limit. Even on the easiest setting, this time limit I've found is almost never enough. There's also one mission where you're given a specific time limit to simply destroy as much as you can. The game will decide after the mission's over if you've destroyed enough to pass the mission!
The biggest problem with almost every mission is that your wingmen are nearly useless except for extremely annoying chatter, which you can luckily turn off in the game options. Even if you've given your wingmen commands to attack, they'll rarely destroy very much or they'll go after useless targets instead of attacking something important. Also if you ask them for help in a dogfight, you'll rarely get it if it's the last plane in the sky you're fighting. It's like the game is programmed to make you and the lead enemy AI pilot always have to fight it out alone, which is just stupid.
I also thought the anti-war theme was a bit overdone. I got extremely tired of the one pilot that constantly had lines about how this was such a shame, etc. I also thought the developers used a stupid plot twist to run the game about 5 missions too long.
Like a previous reviewer said, I really didn't like the fact that I could only pick the planes for my fighter group instead of being able to pick the planes and arm them as in AC 4. It seemed that while I had a lot of missiles (which was a big plus in most missions) I would have preferred to be able to choose between missiles designed for air to air or air to ground battles depending upon my mission objectives. The way this game is set up, all you can do is choose a plane that's more designed for ground attack if your main objectives are ground targets. But that will leave you vulnerable to losing dogfights.
Overall, I just think this game isn't as well done as AC 4 and definitely not as much fun given the incessant anti-war plot and rather stupid plot twist.

I have been a gamer since the first ATARI system came into play. I am AMAZED at how far games have come from the good ol days of atari's COMBAT to the high end graphics and story lines of ACE COMBAT 5. Now I love flight sim's. And have been playing them for a long time. But I have to say this game is nothing short of AMAZING. It draws you into another world. Its almost like interacting with a MOVIE. The story line is awsome and the character's make you think that they are REAL people firghting for their live's. At one point in the game one of the main character's gets shot down and you have to go rescue them. I found myself worrying about the person and rushing through the next mission just to make sure they were safe. Now yes I know im pathetic. But hey the game is that good. If you like to fly and love a good story line buy this game. Don't wait !!!!!

Ace combat 5 is an overall great game. It combines realistic missions and planes with a mode where you can get out there and just kick your enemies butt(whatever). The controls are easy to learn because, well, you don't have to...Lost? Well I say that because you can change the controls and screens to your liking. The first few levels of this game are deceiving their easy, but hit level 5 it gets tough. It is a fairly long game, but compared to ff I-XIII its short (but aren't all games?)Overall If you want a good realistic game this is your best bet.

Awesome graphics, awesome models, awesome game! I've been a fan of PC flight simulators, especially the Jane's series for a very long time and never thought a decent flight sim could be made for a console until the Ace Combat series came about.
AC5 is the best of the series to date, in my opinion. When first loading up the game, I was treated to a magnificent opening movie that told a wonderful story of what was turning into a bleak future for the world. The story set the stage for the campaign mode of the game, which has thus far been pure eye candy!
From 5,000 feet, the textures of the ground and water look almost real, and the way the shadows and light play off of the aircraft in 3rd Person flight mode and really beautiful. The only thing that could have been improved on where the explosion effects, which were not realistic looking for my taste. I expected to see fireballs and falling debris, but did not see any of that. Sinking ships during the naval battles would have been nice as well.
Being a Navy veteran, the game reminded me of combat drills where we would recieve briefings about fictional countries we were at war with and hand to protect ourselves against. The briefing and debriefing portions of the game brings back many fond memories for me and are as much joy to watch as it is a joy to play this game.
If you are a military aviation enthusiast and love flight sims, you have to have this game!
