Would've been better if it didn't follow Ace Combat 4

I've had Ace Combat 4 for a while now. That was my favorite PS2 game for a long while (I've beaten it around 5 times) and it was amazing. Then I got Ace Combat 5. They made some improvements, but not that many. The Plane-Leveling-Up Idea was cool, but you really can start to despise it after a while. The Wingman Idea is good, but they tend to get very annoying as the levels go on. Other than that they didn't change the format much. Moreover, they seemed to keep many of the same Ideas for the levels. For Example, Beach landings.... (ok, well, they added bunkers, woohoo(note:sarchasm)) flying through tunnels to defeat uber-weapon that will keep the war running. Same old, Same Old. If you own Ace Combat 4, this is a possibly good buy (if you like the ace combat series).
If you dont have ace combat 4, then buy both this one and the older one. Play this one first, then go back and play the other one. And one last reminder, Graphics do not make the game.

Once again your put into the cockpit to fly sorties for your fictional nation. Being just about the only realistic combat flight simulator on the market for home consoles theres not much competition. Yet the Ace Combat series strides to outdue its last installment. Ace Combat 5 features some of the sharpest graphics I've ever seen for the Playstation 2. With 50 authentic aircraft each outfitted with authentic weapons and 30+ missions to bag bogies and ground targets, this game offers alot of variety. This installment debuts a new feature to the series. A wingman system that lets you give your squad commands at the touch of the direction pad. Personally I did not like this new addition. You'll be given yes or no questions in the heat of combat and expected to answer no matter what your currently doing. Plus if given the opportunity your squad will take down most enemies before you get a chance to. Replays are back and can be viewed at the end of a mission or by pressing start and doing it manually. The replays are visually astounding, capturing all the action you did in the skies and replaying it in just about photorealistic quality in various controlable viewpoints. A must have for fans of the series but also a must play for those who wondered what its like to fly the unfriendly skies. If it wasn't for the wingman command system making its way into the game I would have gave it a perfect 5 out of 5.
Best Ace combat there is!

I like this game. It's an awesome game, with great graphics and fun gameplay.
The campaign is really nice. The one main thing I like about this is the animated movie scenes and the wingmen who actually have a conversation and crack a joke here and there.
A must buy for any flight simulator lover. I heard it's even better that Ace Combat Zero.
Hours of fun!

The gameplay is great, though you should have a large TV (20" min.) to truly enjoy the game. The missions can be a bit long. I am just disappointed that there isn't a two player mode.
Great in every way

This game has a great storyline and challenging, but beatable levels. Next to the Gran Turismo franchise, the Ace Combat games are among the BEST looking games on the PS2. While it takes a while to totally beat, and it's lacking a 2 player mode, this game is still worth your time and money.
The best game...lets leave it at that

AC5 is a great arcade-like combat simulator. If you like great graphics, fast game play, and ease of control, this is a good game for you. Not a true flight simulator, but the planes are modeled very accurately, giving it a feel of realism.
AC5 is just like AC4 in gameplay, just a new storyline.

Although the story line isn't as compelling as it could have been, if you liked AceCombat 4 you will still like Ace 5. The graphics are as good if not better than before and the video clips in between missions are really good. The missions themselves are varied and interesting. I like the fact that there are more of them to play! The radio chatter can be a bit irritating at times but the controls are familiar and it is easy to 'jump back in the cockpit'! If you like flying combat sims you WILL like this game!
