<3 Ace Combat series

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 1

The Ace Combat series has never dissapointed me, and Ace Combat 5 didn't dissapoint. The story was great, Controls are easy to learn and there's a tutorial for people who have never played an Ace Combat game before. The presentation of the planes are the treat, the developers clearly spent a lot of time into detailing every single plane. The voice acting blew me away, the voice acting matched the characters that they were connected to. The only negative I have is the horribly flat, dull, and lifeless ground, but then again, I never looked at the ground too often since I was too busy hunting down other fighter pilots. <3 Ace Combat 5

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War Review

So, let's begin with Ace Combat 5. This will be my first review also. I have been a gamer since I was six years old in the 80's where Nintendo reigned supreme. Let's not delve into my gaming history because the Ace Combat 5 Review demands I pay attention to it...

Ace Combat 5, which I have rated the game as 5 stars, is an excellent and entertaining piece of dogfighting simulation, a tight story albeit with some loose holes, and of course fighters to purchase and fly.

Starting with the graphics, Ace Combat 5 is great if not superb. With the fighters being incredibly detailed, you can count on your storyline CGI-animated episodic films as they are the breath of every Ace Combat game. For me, I've fought and won the Erasian war as Mobius 1 as do the others who have. The textures on 4 lacked the greatness of ground and sea, for which Ace Combat covers up a little. I can tell you you do not need to worry over pixellation as the storyline coupled with fighters are the ones you will love.

For the storyline, I will not detail spoilers as it will spoil the game and ruin any player's fun. For me, I loved the story of Ace Combat 4, of which you fight as Mobius 1 against the aggressive Erasians and their elite Yellow Squadron. It was great until the ending made it kaput. But 5 kept the storyline engaging with a good mix of mission variety and surpises that would entertain you for chuckles, laughs, and admiration for the Namco team that created this game. The storyline features you, as Blaze, who are thrust into a looming war between two strong superpowers, Ocea and Yuktobania. As Blaze, Ocea sends you into every mission with wingmen so you all work together to combat and win the war. There are interesting twists and hints on every CGI-animated movie as well in-mission. You will have as many questions of who, what, or how they were or ever came to be. The beginning and middle leaves no mercy for the player to understand the major players that drive or push away the war into full throttle or into exhaustion. It is towards the end the storyline hangs by the thread to explain by simple yet interesting uses of revealing the plots.

For the fighters, I can admit to you that my favorite fighter of Ace Combat 4 was Su-37 (Terminator), and in 5, the Su-47 (Berkut) not because of their incredible speed but excellent stability and maneuverability. Whenever I combat my friends, I love to fly fast and play mind games with them rocket for rocket. Of course, there's a downside to every Combat game. You not only have to get the Versus mode by beating the campaign but it is time consuming to buy all the fighters with the money you need to acquire and stacking them up for a no-holds barred PvP aerial battle. In the end you have a full house of planes, it is well worth it as you can display your show of force towards your friends, relatives, whomever and yell, "I am forever invincible!" Yes, my friend, it's from Boris in Goldeneye yet I can never forget the great storyline in that movie. A great classic, don't you agree?

In conclusion, I recommend you buy Ace Combat 5, and the Belkan War, which is very interesting in its own right. So go ahead and purchase it. You won't be sorry once you get pulled into the war. You'll love the fighters! Try the Berkut sometime! :)

See you

This game has one of the best musical scores ever! If you ever take the time to watch the opening movie (wait 10 seconds at the "press start" screen) then you already know that this game rules.

Good with some reservations

I bought Ace Combat 5 at full price (...), its a good solid air combat game. Looks great sounds wonderful. Movies look really good. My only complaints are the characters suck, looks good but are annoying(Maybe something got lost in the translation from Japanese to English). And some of the missions I've flown(I've only completed 7 missions so far) are pretty stupid. Like Escort a large plane through Anit-Air-Arty gaps. So I have to fly around large circles... If you played AC-4 then you should be use to the absurd combat missions. Unless you really liked AC4 and can't wait for AC5 then buy it. I did, I don't regret it, But then again I love flight sims.

This games graphics top almost all PS2 titles. The sheer speed of the jets are remarkable and the size of the levels are incredible. There can be many missiles chasing you while you gun down an enemy fighter. The game is intense and I recommend this game to anyone who was a fan of Ace Combat 4.

Good for Grandsons

I bought this game for my grandson, aged 13, who is taking flying lessons. He played it non-stop while he was visiting at Thanksgiving and really liked it. It is not as bloody and gory as a lot of games (most of them) for teens, and he was able to figure it out on his own, and enjoyed pretty much all of it, especially "buying" different aircraft. I much prefer this game over the ones which stress killing people in graphic detail, and even his mother, who is totally opposed to bloody games, approved it.

I love the game, but I always get stuck on trying to shoot down the ARKBIRD on one of the later missions. The one where the pilot drops out it keep s shooting lasers.

Quite Challenging!

Ace Combat 5 presents quite a challenge {for me at least}, the graphics are realy good and I find the game somewhat difficult in that the action is fast and furious. Objectives are a little vague, sometimes not knowing which enemies to concentrate on to complete the mission! However Namco's support offers on line live chat, email and telephone to assist in mission completions. I recomend this flight sim to all who enjoy air combat, I only wish they offered a PC version!

Five for (Dog)Fighting

Ace Combat 5 is another entry in a long running and mostly pleasing series, but even after so many iterations the game is going strong.

Ace 5's biggest asset is its graphics, which are nothing short of stunning- even for a PS2. The visuals, combined with a wide array of real-world aircraft to choose from, will have you believing you really are a top fighter pilot in minutes.

The game's rather lengthy campaign (27 missions) takes place in various locales showcasing beautifully detailed terrains. The missions themselves provide variety by mixing up objectives including destroy everything in sight, stealth recon sans weapons, escort, and a follow-the-leader test of your maneuvering skill.

My biggest frustration came in the form of a mission consisting of a boring afterburner flight to a cutscene, followed by more boring afterburner to the objective. The objective was a foe who could take a serious beating while doling out plenty of punishment. A tight time limit pushed me over the edge. I don't mind a good challenge, but don't force me to endure several minutes of uneventful button mashing for every attempt. Apart from that, the rest of the game is a good balance of difficulty.

Summary:
Overall 7.5/10 for being a solid playing, visually stunning fighter sim that squarely scratches the itch for good ol' fashioned dogfights. Lack of significant innovation impedes a higher ranking.

Pros:
+Graphics, graphics, graphics!
+Dozens of real-world aircraft to fly
+Fair amount of variety in mission objectives

Cons:
-Lack of innovation
-Campaign drags on a little long, even with the varying objectives
-Story is a bit cheesy
